The 30PW8402's RealFlat tube provides reflection- and distortion-free pictures for maximum viewing comfort, while the DAF (Dynamic Astigmatic Focus) CRT gun ensures reliably excellent quality.

The set offers numerous image enhancements. Crystal Clear III encompasses velocity-scan modulation and a 2D Y/C digital comb filter, which improves quality of incoming interlaced video signals by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

Velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

EyeFidelity (480p/1050i) brings interlaced sources like VCRs and non-progressive-scanning DVD players into the digital realm, giving you a choice between different line doubling and scanning techniques, progressive or interlaced, to reduce motion artifacts like jagged edges and stair stepping. A feature called Active Control 2 continuously analyzes incoming signals and optimizes picture color, sharpness, contrast, and digital noise reduction 60 times per second.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

Decent television...when it works.......2006-12-28

Aside from some slight discoloration around the corners, this television worked fine for roughly 15 months. At 15 months, the set refused to power on. I wasn't too upset because things do break and the set was still under warranty. After multiple calls to Philips customer service (was put on hold for 15 to 20 minutes at a time and was referred to multiple Philips repair shops in other cities AND STATES), I was referred to a local repair center. Employees from the local repair center picked up the television and then I waited. And waited. And waited. After 3+ months and several calls to the repair center, they recommended that I contact Philips again directly because they were having trouble getting replacement parts. I called Philips and they were able to overnight a part to the repair center. A few days later, I had my tv back.
One month later, the set died again in the same way. One phone conversation with a rude Philips customer service representative and two weeks later, the set is back in the shop. They refuse to replace the tv even though it has failed in the same way twice. I recommend that you avoid any Philips product because of their lack of quality and the company's lack of customer service.

1080i <$400 bargain? Good for X360?.......2006-04-20

I paid $330 with tax and shipping. This TV is better than the 30PW8420 (and the other 30" CRTs by Philips by far). Killer picture with a HDMI/DVI input. Very Good/Excellent sound.

The bad: The TV comes lightly packed in a refurb box. This TV has past problems electrically. My remote was dirty/ruffed up. The 24"-30" LCD TV are getting ~$800 now.

Philips will try to sell you the a warranty that costs more than what you paid for the TV.

If you want a cheap HD CRT with gadgets and great sound this is your TV. Just don't cry when you need to get it serviced. I have not seen any 1080 DVD media out yet except for X360.

You can live with it, but...........2005-03-16

The most troublesome thing about this TV is the black line and white shading that appears at the top of the monitor whenever there is a dark screen--horror movies, transitions between channels--anytime you watch a dark scene! Sure, in high-def with a bright colorful screen, this TV looks fantastic, but just wait. I've had mine six months, and I sincerely regret spending $700 for it, when I could've gotten the Sony for just a couple hundred more. It's making me insane! Do not purchase this TV if you obsess about the little details like I do!

Horizontal line flickering, color patches all true.......2005-02-10

I bought this TV (not on amazon, though -- I don't buy things that cost over $100 on the Internet), used it for two weeks, and have just returned it (and that is why). All the problems that P. Davis has written below is true. First, the horizontal line flickering. To me it was not too disturbing, unless I was looking at a blank screen. Okay. But the color patches that appear against a bright background after a minute or two of watching was unbearable. I was watching my favorite movie and at one scene where 40% of the screen was bright white, that part was becoming yellower and yellower until I began thinking about the money I had spent, and it really hurt. I tried unplugging the TV for 20 minutes to degauss it (with ALL the appliances put away from it) FIVE times as they suggested at the support website, but it was only temporary and they would reappear right away.

Now comes the second part. I called the phoner number on the manual to ask for a repair. The representatives were nice, and really tried to be helpful. However, the local service store here in Ann Arbor they told me of said they don't do in-home repairs (for Philips TV's). I called Philips again and got some more contact numbers (now 25mi away), and they said they were supposed to perform in-home repairs. When I called them, the service centers were complaining that they had told Philips repeatedly in the past that they wouldn't do services in Ann Arbor, and refused to help me unless I brought it there. Called Philips again, but I knew an in-home service was never going to happen. At this point I decided this was going back. I will look for some other good product and maybe buy some service plans. Just like modern cars, TV's have so many features that I guess they break down more often than simple tube TV's. A bargain is a bargain with a reason.

Excellent Bargain for HD Broadcasts.......2005-02-07

I am new to the world of HDTV. I am using this Philips TV accessing content by way of my cable provider in the NYC area. I mention this because I was a little disappointed when I started viewing shows on this Philips set. Adjusting the controls provided with the TV went some ways toward producing a fair picture with standard definition broadcasts. The first HD channels I saw were noticably better but nothing that stood out. I surmised that this was the result of a low priced unit. You get what you pay for.

That is, until I turned on the Discovery HD channel. As a recent famous philosopher might say..."Whoa!" The picture was crisp with vibrant colors. It displayed an almost life-like picture. This is what I was expecting. A big, noticeiable difference between digital cable and HDTV. I now use the Discovery HD channel to baseline my HD picture settings on the set.

I have since come across other true HD programming. They all looked excellent when viewed on this Philips TV. Progressive scanned DVD players take advantage of the Philips ability to display content at 480p as well as 1080i. The result is an excellent picture when viewing DVD's and using component cables.

The sound is only average when using the set's built-in speakers, though that was not unexpected. I expect a home theater setup to be much better.

To finish my point: The Philips 30PW8402 television is an excellent bargain when viewing true HD programming. The quality of standard definition broadcasts has been average at best. Keep in mind that all of this is also determined by the quality of the source material (is it true HD?) and signal from your content provider, which seems to vary greatly.
