Amazon.com Product Description

No matter how you prefer to input your data, the Gateway M275X Tablet PC has you covered. If you favor traditional methods, the M275X is packaged with a flip-open full-size keyboard. If you'd rather work with a stylus, the unit's swiveling display allows you to write and store information, sketch pictures and annotate documents via your own handwriting. Versatile, adaptable, compact and substantially more powerful than the majority of competing tablet PCs, the Gateway M275X is ready to handle virtually any situation and user preference.

Certainly Gateway has designed the unit with portability in mind. Tipping the scales at just 5.7 pounds and measuring 12.6 by 10.8 by a mere 1.1 inches, the Gateway M275X is larger than many tablets but substantially slimmer and more lightweight than the notebook norm.

Gateway has turned to Intel's new Centrino platform to power the system. Centrino, a technology built upon a triad of three interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full GB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- allows portable computers to be smaller, more power efficient, and faster than their rated CPU speeds might indicate. The Gateway M275X features a snappy 1.4 GHz Pentium M processor and a smallish alloent of 256 MB DDR SDRAM as its power base, and an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 3-D graphics chipset with 32 MB shared (not dedicated) video memory to drive its 3-D visuals. Consequently, the unit is ready for most standard mobile 2-D tasks but will have some troubles in intense multitasking situations and when trying to smoothly display midlevel and high-end 3-D apps and games.

The distinctive Gateway M275X sports several other desirable amenities, including a generous 14-inch XGA TFT Active Matrix display (large by tablet standards), a 56K modem, a 10/100 Ethernet connection, and an 802.11b wireless networking card for trouble-free LAN and Internet access in any environment. The enclosed 40 GB hard disk is of average size, and the system's optical drive handles CD playing and burning and DVD playing but doesn't support DVD writing. Connectivity options include two high-speed USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire port (typically used for downloading from digital camcorders) and an integrated 4-in-1 card reader for linking with memory cards from PDAs, digital cameras, and the like.

The bundled software package features Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0 and a 90-day free trial with the respected Norton AntiVirus utility.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Please do not buy from Gateway.......2006-09-12

Recently I bought a Tablet PC from Gateway cx200x and the experience is very alarming and frustrating. The Tablet is a just a Lemon and it heats up like mad. They have already changed the Motherboard, Hard Disk, CPU and Stylus. Next in line to be changed are motherboard (Second time), the assembly and the fan...they are not doing it free. They are doing it because I have a 4 year paid limited warranty...just imagine what life would be without this warranty. I have invested almost $3000 on this tablet and will never look at Gateway Again...another thing I have a business level support...not the standard home office kind of support...

The customer service is good as they immediately ask for replacement of the parts. But then if you are interested in opening a tablet PC repairing lab at home then you can go ahead and order it from them as they would come down and keeping ripping the parts of the machine and changing it...another big problem is that not most the technicians at gateway that I came across had seen a tablet before troubleshooting on my tablet PC.

You won't be able to use it as it will be a kept there with people coming in and out of your house repairing and replacing parts...It's like buying a car and then taking the engine out. I have serious doubts on the machines....I am keeping my patience and waiting for the next part to be replaced...as I am in the first year of warranty...

One good thing is that you will be able to listen to a lot of songs sung by Jennifer while you wait to reach a person who could take accountability of your problem...usual problem resolving cycle is 1 hour to 3 hours...

Just BEWARE of GATEWAY and don't just get carried away by the sales guys...

2 out of 5 stars This is not a dream machine.......2006-08-19

Honestly the machine in its prime is a 4. Stable, long battery life, good resolution. There isn't a low enough number offered to reflect the pitiful customer service so a rating of 2 is more an effort to impress my maker that I retain some generosity of spirit than a valid rating.

I have used an M275 for the last two years in my work. I bought it for its tablet capabilities and in that regard it has delivered.
The pity is that it is badged Gateway.
First, after buying the 3 yr extended warranty, but while still in the first year warranty period the hard drive froze.
I was told that it would have to be sent to Texas for repair. Since it was my work machine I opted to have a new HDD sent. I had backed up my data, so a formatted disk with the OS loaded would have sufficed.
That simple solution eluded Gateway through FIVE shipped drives, three unformatted and none with OS loaded. In the end I shipped it and the pile of useless replacement drives to them and yes, they charged me for shipping.
Fast forward to this summer. Broken protective glass over the TFT screen due to a gust of wind coercing the open door of my Chevy to occupy the space that my arm and my computer case had been occupying.
Gateway please send replacement glass which I will pay for and save some shipping by including the little latch mechanism that has been kaput since last year. I expect you to cover the cost of the latch and I will affect the repairs of both items.
So sorry Mr. Lee the Builder but you must ship it to Texas with a check for much more than 500$ for a pane of glass and a piddling latch mechanism.
I say nay nay.
Here's the skinny. Gateway is a dinosaur at the end of its epoch. Do the poor old girl and yourself a favor and look elsewhere. Let her die in peace. There are other tablets and the ones Gateway sells are just badged Gateway anyway so in truth practically the same machines are available elsewhere.
My next will be an Acer. The customer service is not stellar from them either, but it's positively whiteglove compared to doddering old Gateway.
One more thing.
Should you opt for a Gateway product, I wouldn't waste a penny on the warranty. There is ample web based support and parts replacement capability and I suggest that the money would be better off in a short term mid cap than dumping it down the hole that is Gateway and that thing I laughingly refer to here as customer "service".

1 out of 5 stars Piece of junk.......2006-02-19

Make sure you get the extended warranty with this, because you'll need it.

I am on my 4th replacement machine. The first one, the pen functionality stopped working. The pen functionality stopped working on the second one as well. By the way, it took a while to get my second one even though I paid good money to have the extended warranty with accidental damage protection. (I'd hate to see how long it would take to replace if it were actually damaged).

After my second one failed, it took a long time, several phone calls and emails to tech support, and finally a strong letter to the VP to get my third warranty replacement machine.

The 3rd one didn't work when it arrived so they sent me the 4th one which I have been using now for several months.

Recently, the backlight on the screen started to go out intermittently, so I called in to get it fixed. I was told I would be called back the next day to schedule the on-site replacement of the screen. After waiting 8 days, I decided to call them back. Supposedly the tech will be out next week to fix it, but I'm not holding my breath.

Needless to say, this will be my last Gateway machine. I reluctantly purchased this one after a bad expreience with a Solo laptop a few years ago. Their product has not improved and their service has gotten worse. I am going to get this one fixed (for the last time) and put it on eBay or maybe just take it to the shooting range.

This machine isn't worth the frustration; go with another brand!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-08-14

Great value - great features. Have been waiting for an "affordable" tablet - have had great experience with Gateway and this is the best one I've had so far. Highly recommended!

Are you looking for an awesome deal on a laptop? Need the best Tablet PC on the market? Are you a student that has difficulty with there typing skills? Are you an office worker that thinks they can be more productive if they didn't have to type everything? Do you need an excellent computer, but don't want to pay $2,000* + on a computer that's not as good as the M275? If you answered yes to any of these questions than the Gateway** M275 convertible tablet pc is the right choice for you. Now you're probably saying ok here's a laptop reasonably priced nothing special hmm... next! WRONG the M275 unlike most tablets that don't have built in keyboards and, unlike most laptops that don't offer handwriting recondition the M275 offers the best of both worlds, when you first open it up it's a normal laptop, then all you have to do is turn the screen, push a button and Boom... it instantly becomes a tablet. What is a tablet you ask, a tablet is a special type of computer with special software made by Microsoft*** that offers converted handwriting recondition, that means that with a special pen (Included) you can write on the screen press a button and BOOM!!! It converts your handwriting. As well as offering handwriting recondition it also offers a 14" screen, something only offered by two manufacturers of tablets (Gateway** and Acer**) in addition it also offers a memory card reader so if you are going on vacation and you're bringing along your digital camera you don't have to pack a cable for your digital camera (if it supports SD, Memory Stick**, or Smart Media) This is why I think the M275 is a excellent system!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Tablet good Gateway bad.......2005-10-04

Very cool computer and love the tablet style. I would advocate a tablet in general but not this one or any made by Gateway. It breaks easily, I have had to returned it and get it fixed three times, the hinges that make it swivel around are too weak for the weight so naturally they fall apart. And gateway's service is very very poor. There phone service is infuriating at times. I like the computer but will never deal with Gateway again.

3 out of 5 stars Repackaged Toshiba?.......2004-07-18

In nearly all respects, this is a lesser version of the Toshiba M205 . It uses a slower processor, ships with half the RAM, and has a smaller hard drive. Even the naming convention for the model seems inherited from Toshiba (Gateways' M275X opposed to Toshiba's M205). In this case, a bigger model number equals less tablet.

I'm trying to see the innovation here. Maybe it's the Firewire port. It's not the SD-card support, since the Toshiba has that. Maybe it's the larger screen, 14" opposed to the Toshiba's 12". Could prove useful, but compelling?

Weigh them each on their own merits, pick the best one for your needs, but keep in mind that if this in fact a re-branded Toshiba, you'll save yourself some technical headaches by going right to the source innovator. Better drivers, better access to advanced tech... maybe Gateway's technical support has gotten better over the years, but I doubt it.

For a tablet PC, you can do better.

Fred

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLY reliable mp3 player!!!.......2006-12-18

I have had this mp3 player since March 2004 ($330), and was the best purchase I have ever made.

I recognize that the firmware sucks, however, there was a firmware upgrade offered a year and a half ago or so, and with it, has significantly improved the product.

I have not had any problems with it. The click-and-drag format is easy and makes for a very organized system. The battery life per charge is amazing, 16 hours. Over the course that I've had it, it has only decreased to 12 hours or so. So even nearly 3 years later, the non-replaceable re-chargeable battery is still performing at near-top notch.

It has excellent recording (internal or external mic--included), AM/FM radio (another reviewer on 12/8/2004 said it didn't have AM capability but it does), navigation (very intuitive to pc users), "remote control"....I could go on and on. It is bulky compared to today's standards (3 years ago, this was considered "small"), but is well worth it. It also has a sleep timer, so if you're listening to it as you fall asleep, you can make it turn off by itself after 30 min or 60 min, whatever you specify.

It also originally comes with the case, external mic, earphones, remote control, and USB connection. Which is more than you can say for ipods.

I am aware that others have had problems with the harddrive and other problems, but I have not experienced any of these. I have used this extensively during 6-hrs a day studying over the past 3 years, so I can attest to its dependability towards long-term use. Addressing an ealier comment left by a reviewer (on 7/28/06), it most CERTAINLY DOES play other formats than mp3, INCLUDING wav and wma.

Cons:
-You can't make playlists or delete files on the go. But with 20 gigs, who needs to delete files?
-the earphones it comes with are painful. i bought a sony pair for $7.
-It is too bad iriver does not make this product anymore, it is far better than what they offer now.

If you can find this product, I highly recommend it. Apparently others have had problems with it, so I guess the quality between units differs. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them lizz2424 @ yahoo . com (remove spaces)!

5 out of 5 stars It's all in the marketing.......2006-11-27

I've had my iRiver since early 2005 and have not a problem. The battery holds the charge a long time (I play my player on the way to work and at my desk for a total of over 9 hours and I still have power left to carry me thru for most of the next day (just remember when you turn it off to move the button to the hold position, this will keep the battery charged longer)). I love the radio and all the other features especially the remote control. It comes in handy when your on a long flight with not much space.

2 out of 5 stars The Battery Dies & You Are Screwed.......2005-11-10

Had the player, a little funky to figure out but was working well. Works more like a hard drive than a music player, By that I mean it is not very Windows freindly. It has upgrades for the software, if you have a lot of music, the Moodlogic firmware upgrade is not a very good idea. The firward can really slow down the player.

Sound quality is good.

Warranty is 1 year. My player died at 1 year, 2 weeks. Player was $299 when I bought it.

It took 7 calls, emails, and 1 fax from 9/27/05 until 11/08/05 to get a response, to my request to have it fixed.

Response: It is out of the 1 year warranty, there is nothing we will do for you.

$300 annuanly for a player is a rip off

BUY SOMETHING ELSE

4 out of 5 stars A great Mp3 player - but flawed.......2005-09-18

Pros: It plays many formats, including ogg. It's nice that it's a usable hard-drive, without requiring special software for the computer it connects to. The radio and recorder are great plusses. The interface is better than average, although still not great.

Cons: If it breaks and it's not under warrantee, there is no way to get it repaired. User interface could be better. The fast-forward is very slow, and there is no "bookmark" feature - together this makes the iRiver nearly unusable for long podcasts or audiobooks.

Summary: A good choice, especially if radio, recorder, and ogg playing is required, and if you don't need to listen to audiobooks. Otherwise, consider the Rio Karma or iPod instead.

5 out of 5 stars My best purchase ever!!.......2005-04-13

Some people have been conditioned to think (by the media) that the Ipod is the ultimate jukebox-carry-along-music-whatever-device. WRONG!!!! I am of the opinion that the Ipod is highly overrated, so when I went looking for a hard drive player, I didn't even bother to check it.
But enough of the Ipod; this review is about the incredibly magnificent Iriver H120. The pros outweight the cons by a large and considerable margin: sound, user-friendliness, features, the gorgeously engraved leather carrying case, etc. I managed to equalize my Iriver so now it sounds the same, if not better, than a Bose sound system. The buttons only need 5 mins. to get accostumed to, and in the remote, everything is at your finger's reach, literally speaking.
The only problem I see with this device is the tangled cords between the remote and the earphones (which, by the way, are not that crappy as everybody says, once you equalize the sound to get the best out of them). Other than that, is the best spent US $250 ever.

I recommend this player with my eyes closed; it has been the best Xmas gift I could have ever given myself.
