      Amazon.com Product Description

Compact and battery efficient yet more powerful and versatile than many larger, bulkier portable computers, the Gateway M505X Notebook is a smart choice for those who put equal emphasis on performance and portability.

Not surprisingly, the unit features Intel's new Centrino technology. Built upon a triad of interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full GB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- Centrino-equipped notebooks deliver more power and more perks than their comparatively diminutive size and rated processor speed would otherwise indicate. In the case of the Gateway M505X, that processor is a 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium M, which works hand-in-hand with the system's 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory and impressively punchy ATI Radeon 9600 graphics controller (64 MB dedicated video memory) to efficiently handle all but the most complex 2-D and 3-D business and leisure notebook applications.

Measuring just 14 by 10 by 1.4 inches and weighing a mere 6.7 pounds with optical drive and battery installed, the Gateway M505X is nevertheless crammed with impressive mobile features. Though the unit's 40 GB hard disk is only of average size, its optical drive permits CD playing and burning and DVD playing. Its display offers a surprisingly generous 15.4 widescreen inches of viewing area at crystal clear 1280 by 800 resolutions, and its on-board stereo speaker system features a miniature subwoofer for added audio depth. Moreover, its communication options include not only a standard 56K dial-up modem and a 10/100 Ethernet network adapter, but also an integrated 802.11b wireless connection for those times when you can't or don't want to plug in.

Other important amenities include three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external peripherals such as scanners or digital cameras, two IEEE 1394 FireWire ports (typically used for digital camcorder downloads), a VGA port for external monitors, a parallel "printer" port, and an S-Video TV-out.

Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works Suite 7.0 and a 90-day trial with Norton AntiVirus.

      5 out of 5 stars Very nice multi-media machine.......2004-03-10

I like this notebook. I had purchased a cheaper laptop earlier, but sent it back because of the fan noise. The cheaper laptops typically use Intel Celeron processors which do not include "Speedstep" technology. Intel's speedstep (or AMDs similar technique) is needed to reduce power consumption/dissipation (and hence heat) to keep the fan off. In Intel's line, it seems to only come with Mobile Pentium M (part of "Centrino") and with *Mobile* Pentium 4s. The Gateway M505X which has the more advanced Pentium M (1.4 GHz which is equivalent to perhaps a 2.4 GHz P4)) does not run the fan at all during most uses (probably would if one ran games, etc.), and the hard drive is virtually inaudible. In short, the machine is totally silent. In addition, the bottom only gets moderately warm (not hot). Also, the palm rests do not suffer from heat buildup like some competing models (hard disk location is better in 505X).

The touchpad is awesome. Has a very smooth feel, never missing my finger's commands. I wish the left/right mouse keys were slightly less stiff, and I must say that although the keyboard is nice (less force needed than on HPs and Compaqs), I am dissappointed that Gateway left a chasm below the j, k, and l keys. When these keys are hit, the keyboard flexes slightly and the sound made is significantly different than the keys on the left side which have structure below them. But I'll learn to live with it... :-)

The multimedia capabilities of the machine are excellent. Especially the sound quality. I am frankly amazed at how good this thing sounds. As an Electrical Engineer, I know it is not easy to make good sound from tiny speakers, but this machine does a good job. (It's not going to compare to large speakers, of course, but it is infinitely better than the speakers in the cheaper laptop I purchased and returned). The 505X has, in addition to the two top speakers, a "subwoofer" that does a very credible job of enhancing the lows. Makes bass guitar tracks, etc. very clearly heard, and fills out the sound in general. There's even an equalizer that comes up in the system tray that you can use to alter the tonal quality and add effects such as reverb! The only negative on the sound is that max volume is not too high. In a noisy environment, this might be an issue, but its certainly fine for around the house.

The widescreen is also nice. Native resolution is 1280 x 800, which is OK for my eyesight. Like other laptops, if you go to a different (lower) resolution, the fonts look a bit rough, so be sure you can read text at the native resolution. The text is going to be slightly smaller than say, a 15 inch TFT with 1024x768 native resolution. Brightness is good, and has many levels so one can save power and battery life by turning it down if you want. One slight negative on the display is that mine has one bad pixel. It is stuck on and noticible with dark backgrounds, but completely invisible most of the time, so I can live with it... On the subject of battery life, I went 4 hours of mixed use (surfing web wirelessly, loading a few programs, playing snippets of DVDs, intermixed with some idle time on a mid-brightness setting), and still had 20% left in the battery.

Wireless works fine. Seems to get as good a signal or better than my external card on my other machine. Power management is pretty good too. When I put it to sleep (hibernate mode), it gets there in 13 seconds. Waking from hibernation takes 22 seconds. Not bad for a machine with 512Mb of RAM. Of course, your mileage may vary, depending on what software you are using.

Finally, the aesthetics and build are nice too. The metal lid and keyboard surround are fashionable and the machine feels quite solid. Would be nice if it were a few pounds lighter, but the 6.7 pounds is about state-of the art for what it contains.
For the price, I'm very pleased!

5 out of 5 stars great notebook, for great price.......2004-01-31

had the notebook for about a month now, and love everything about it. No problems to report so far.

Pros: wide-screen is definitely a major plus, at 6.7lbs lighter than other comparable notebooks. Sturdier than comparable models. S-video port, and 3 USB ports. Looks VERY cool.

Cons: No infrared (has the port built in, but its been disabled), at 1.4M not the fastest out there, 40 gigs is slightly smaller than others.

Final note, I was debating between the toshiba m35 which was cheaper at the time than this, but the toshiba seemed flimsier and even though it had a bigger hard drive, it was not that appealing. The keyboard on the toshiba feels quite uncomfortable.

5 out of 5 stars Gateway M505X vs. Toshiba M35-S359.......2004-01-11

Similar to another notebook shopper, I debated between the comparable Gateway M505X and Toshiba M35-S359, (see the very complete review "Nice machine, nice price", December 2, 2003 for the Toshiba).

Unlike that reviewer, I ended up purchasing the Gateway for a couple of reasons:

The Toshiba felt a bit flimsy and the keyboard was mushy. The Gateway seems to be constructed better and have a more subsantial feel with a very nice keyboard, without being much heavier (~1/2 pound).

The Gateway has much better speakers and a subwoofer which enhances the sound. The Toshiba sounded faint and metallic in comparison. The Gateway also has a very handy AV panel with LC display.

The screen on the Toshiba might be a little better, or at least a little brighter at its highest setting, but both are very good.

The Gateway offered better extended warranty packages for less money. Also, you can take it into any Gateway store instead of shipping it somewhere. Complete extended warranties with accidental damage coverage offered by computer retailers for about the same price were only 2 years vs. Gateway's 3.

The Gateway is much sleeker, and cleaner looking with its monotone metallic case and integrated speakers.

I realize that most of my points are aesthetic, but the hardware is almost identical, and performance should be very comparable.

3 out of 5 stars Great sound, great screen, BAD wireless, bad A/V panel.......2006-07-25

Got this laptop second-hand. Was missing the slot-loading combo drive, but when I knew it, it was mediocre at best. The slot-loading drive is a GREAT show-off piece, but impractical and can't read many discs. It can't use smaller discs (the 8cm discs) and it had trouble reading DVDs.

The wireless was missing its antennas when I first got it so I bought replacement antennas on eBay. After installing them I was presented with sub-par range and EXTREMELY unstable and MASSIVE drivers. The "hardware switch" kept switching itself on and off, so the wireless link went up and down countless times a second. "B" wireless is outdated and slow. The Intel software sucks. I'm going to buy a replacement card on eBay, a 108G card, and use that one for access. It doesn't have easy access to the card. Most laptops have it on the bottom of the PC and this one is under the keyboard and a heatsink/protective cover.

Sound is excellent, though, if a little quiet. The speakers have so much potential. It's got a huge, full subwoofer (in place of a secondary HDD port) that has SO much potential for loud volumes, but alas, it doesn't perform. The maximum volume is completely drowned out in a car on the freeway or a loud building. My previous laptops have all outperformed it, but not at as good a volume. It did seem to have an issue with "wobbling" idling sound where the subwoofer "wobbled" while the computer was idle, but that issue was solved by removing and reinserting the subwoofer module.

The hard drive internal layout is screwy. You're pretty much unable to install third-party optical drives because they must be configured as a "slave" drive. The hard drive and optical drive are wired on the same channel, and the secondary hard drive is on its own controller. It's configured for fast performance for drive-to-drive copies, but if you only have one drive? Where's the benefit? You can change master/slave options on hard drives, but not optical drives; it's hard-coded in the firmware. It would be nice if they put the secondary hard drive as "slave" to the primary and put the optical on the secondary channel, but they didn't.

The screen is great. Bright, clear, and readable in daylight. The widescreen layout is really nice. But that's one of the two displays. The "A/V panel" off to the side of the keyboard is... well, it's had problems since the start. The software has absolutely no configuration, blocks standard multimedia keyboard calls (to configure external programs -- who uses Windows Media Player anyway?!), and guess what? The cheap LCD screen falls apart. The bad connection design broke and I'm left with partial segments on the screen. It's totally useless now. It only worked right with Windows Media Player anyway and, well... that sucked. Wish they had a better design there.

Battery life is decent, about two and a half hours. The Pentium M CPU helps but it's offset by the horrible wireless card, wide screen, and high-end graphics chip. It could be better if I could slow down or stop some of those devices, or have more granular control over the internals (e.g. CPU speed, GPU speed, disabling devices, etc).

Anyway, I think it's a decent computer with some design flaws. They all do. Companies try catering to the computer-illiterate idiots and end up screwing the techies over. Making everything automatic and eating up HDD space just because it's there. I don't think it'll get any better though, so hey, it's a decent computer!

      1 out of 5 stars Bad Screen.......2005-03-18

I bought this computer and about a month later, the screen started messing up!! it starts turning all different colors and i cant play games or watch dvds because it gets worse!
Never will i buy a gateway again

      5 out of 5 stars nice.......2004-11-18

Very fast. I like the buiilt in cd control on the left. I own this computer. Very nice for the price.

      4 out of 5 stars M505X Seventh Month Update.......2004-07-22

I previously reviewed the M505X in January 2004 when I initially purchased it, comparing it to the Toshiba M35-S359, and giving it 5 stars.

Since then, I have had a few issues. The most annoying problem has been the resolution when attached to a projector. Neither I nor Gateway support was able to find a setting that allows the screen to be viewed properly, and I've tried a few different projectors. The image is always to big for the viewing area. This is important to me since I make presentations frequently and bought the laptop for this purpose.

Also, the subwoofer developed a sound problem, and wasn't as clear and vivid as when new. Gateway promply sent a new one however, and it seems to be working better.

I still feel that the M505x has the best screen (except for Sony's xbrite), the best keyboard, and the best sound compared to all the competitors. If it weren't for the projection problem it would be outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars This is one SUPER computer!!.......2004-06-20

Greetings - I ordered this laptop from Amazon in May - and it was forwarded to me all the way to FOB Dagger, Iraq (Amazon will not send lots of technology products overseas so I had to have it forwarded). First of all, my full-time job is computer support so I have quite a bit of laptop/notebook experience. This M505x is a super, super machine. Build quality is great - no 'flexy' case, cheap plastic (think "D*ll") or crooked lines here and there - its top-notch in this respect. It is made in the Phillipines vice mainland China by the way. The display is bright, responsive and not grainy (and the case lid appears to be aluminum). No dead pixels on mine by the way, quite a feat considering how far it traveled!! One of the greatest features of this laptop is the ATI Radeon 9600 (64mb DDR) graphics. It absolutely rocks with the games I've played. Raven Shield looks great - and the Far Cry demo is awsome. Oh, also by the way, in view of all of this praise, you might think this is either a vaporware review - or that I'm somehow connected to Gateway. I really ordered and possess the system and I'm not in any way connected with Gateway. One little downside is that it came with a 4200-rpm hdd - but I had pre-ordered a spare Hitachi 40-gb 5400-rpm drive (not from Gateway or Amazon). Here's another M505x advantage - Gateway didn't take the cheap way out with a garbage-software-infested restore CD - the "restore" CD appears to be a relabeled XP Home CD! No problems with the restore to the new hdd - and the software/apps CD gives you the option to pick and choose what to install. All of the buttons/SD card slot/graphics worked perfectly after the restore. I cannot say enough good things about the M505x - I am thrilled with mine!! One last comment - I am sending this review from an Army morale computer in an internet cafe. I had never cared much for Gateways until I arrived here at FOB Dagger. The 20 Gateways in this Cafe take an enormous beating from GI's, heat, dust, viruses - you name it. Most of them have a few bad pixels now - but they are running very well considering the use and abuse they get. The only thing they all need is 256mb of ram instead of the measly 128mb that they each have. Ok - last but not least - there has to be some negatives: Gateway uses cheap cardboard for shock protection in their boxes - although my system was not damaged. And, to be honest, some users have reported dark areas in their displays (not mine, though) - as reported on notebookforums.com.

        Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy compact quality and format flexibility with the Philips 20DV693R TV/DVD combination unit. The 20-inch set plays DVDs, CDs, and MP3 CDs, letting you enjoy the best movies and music right from one device. The set's Real Flat picture tube increases viable viewing angles while reducing reflected ambient light to create a brighter and crisper image. The 20DV693R's digital comb filter removes blurred edges between colors and reduces dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped t-shirt).

A shadow mask is a thin sheet of perforated metal behind the screen that restricts electron flow, each hole in the sheet corresponding to a single pixel. An Invar mask uses an alloy that's especially resistant to the high temperatures generated by the electron beam, allowing in a brighter, clearer picture.

A hallmark of the set, its QuadraSurf remote control lets you personalize and customize your channel surfing and TV viewing by family member or program theme. QuadraSurf delivers your favorite television shows at the press of a button.

A component-video input grants optimum connection with a compatible DVD player, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate all DVD players. You can choose between a set of rear AV inputs and a set of side AV inputs for extra convenience.

Other 20DV693R features include a 240-minute sleep timer, AutoPicture (which optimizes brightness, contrast, color, tint, and sharpness), AutoLock (which uses V-Chip technology for parental control), and AutoSound (which lets you select settings for voice, music, movies, or custom). 5 out of 5 stars Philips 20DV693R: A Bargain!!!.......2005-02-10

I own 2 of these machines and for the price of $300 they offer excellent picture and sound quality. In addition, though many have complained about the DVD I think it is very decent and complements the rest of the machine very well. Philips tv's have unbeatable durability, as many others have said and both my machines are still going strong since last year. I definitely recommend this Philips machine to people looking for reasonably priced flat-screen and widescreen TV, that occasionally like to watch DVDs.

1 out of 5 stars DVD Player Faulty.......2004-08-28

Bought for daghter. 3 months later DVD player doesn't work. Phillips service center is terrible!

3 out of 5 stars Great TV for the first 6 months.......2004-08-16

We purchased this TV at a department store, not at Amazon. Loved it...GREAT picture, etc. However, after about 6-8 months, the DVD players skips too much to watch DVDs anymore and the TV turns itself off when you turn it on - you have to hit 'on' twice. After talking to Philips, it does have a year free parts replacement, but we'll have to pay for someone to come out and look at it (or haul it down the stairs and into a store). I guess were lucky we have an extra DVD player in the house!

        3 out of 5 stars Philips 20" Flatscreen/DVD Combo.......2004-04-23

I received my Philips 20" TV as a service award from work. My kids enjoyed watching DVD movies on it for about one month. We also enjoyed listening to CDs. Now, after only one month of using, the DVD no longer works and I have to haul it to a service center for repair! :-(
