Unacceptable for home use.......2004-03-30

I purchased six of these phones and the four line system. The range is exceptional and that is the only good thing that can be said for this system. Within four days, one phone became defective and it took Engenius four weeks and six phone calls to repair it. They didn't know they'd received it for repairs, said they mailed it back, (they hadn't), and at least four phone calls went unreturned for days at a time. The phone takes a second or two to obtain a line, there is no ability to have specific lines ring on specific phones short of using the voice answering system, which not all home users want to do, the battery life is very short, and the phones will suddenly "crash" and require you to turn them back on. Every few days the main unit need to be powered off and on. The software is very buggy and technical support not acceptable. I would not recommend this system for home use. You will be very unhappy, unless you need exceptional range, there is nothing else to recommend it.

Junk.......2004-02-27

Although the range on these things are good, the sound quality is horrible. There's a constant hiss in the background, battery time is low, and the phones are uncomfortable to hold (small and HEAVY). Also, the buttons on the phone are extremly slow to react. When you start dialing you hear the tone about a second later, which is really annoying as you're dialing a number. In short, these phones are poorly built and designed, bad features, and generally not worth it even if they were half the price.

Great range, OK quality.......2003-02-28

I bought this phone because I was tired of trying to get other cordless phones to work in my sprawling house and yard - they didn't have enough range. Specifically I recently tossed the Siemens Gigaset due to poor range.

Well, this phone works admirably - it has more than enough range for a large property with no fade out. The handsets are tough and feel solid (they are really meant for factory or warehouse use). Battery life hasn't been an issue for us at all - in a home you usually keep the handsets in a charging cradle when not in use anyways. Voice quality is as good as the Siemens was. And the fact that it works at 900 Mhz is a bonus since it won't interfere with my wireless Ethernet (802.11) network.

This is an update since I've had these phones for about 6 months now: They aren't perfect. When you put the phone into the cradle to recharge, you have to put it in carefully otherwise it'll look OK, but won't be recharging. Also the recharging contacts are fragile compared to other phones and in fact I have to toss out one of my SN-920's 'cause the contacts got damaged. And the microphone on another SN-920 died. Also, the phones aren't comfortable against your ear.

My ideal phone would have the SN-920's distance with better ergonomics and better recharge contacts. Unfortunately, I don't know of such a phone.

Good for distance, not for quality.......2002-08-29

If you need the long distance, this phone will give it to you but don't expect reliability. We continually have battery problems and as another review said it has it's quirks. The handset is heavy and not very ergonomic. For the money, it's rather disappointing.

EnGenius SN920 Ultra.......2001-12-14

My principal reasons for purchasing the EnGenius SN920 Ultra were:
1) supported multiple remote handsets
2) could be expanded to support multiple incoming lines
3) operated in the 900MHz band

The 900MHz band was a key issue, since I planned to install an IEEE 802.11b RF LAN, which operates in the 2.4GHz band. This ruled out any of the 2.4GHz phone systems, since they would interfere with the phone and vice-versa.

The EnGenius SN920 works fine from a technical standpoint, but there are numerous quirks about the phone, especially with regards to 'human factors' issues:

1) Voice quality is good, but not as good as a Motorola STARtac. This is surprising since the SN920 uses ADPCM digital encoding. Also, the speaker has very poor low frequency response, likely due to the small size of the phone, and is nowhere as good as a traditional corded phone.

2) A very annoying trait is that when you pick up the phone from its cradle, the caller ID info disappears! This forces you to crouch down to view the caller ID, which is inconvenient.

3) When the phone is not in its cradle, you answer it by pressing 'TALK', which is fine. Unfortunately there is no way to configure the phone to require 'TALK' to be pressed when it is picked up from its cradle, so picking up the phone that is already in a cradle versus not in a cradle is *different* and annoying. Half the time, we have to press 'TALK' twice, since you shouldn't press 'TALK' after you pick it up from a cradle. Although this sounds like a trivial nit, it really is a hassle.

4) I would not recommend this phone for older people, especially those who have arthritis. The phone is smaller and heavier than most, but it is too heavy for a moderately infirm person to hold for a long time. The buttons are also harder to push. The phone was designed this way for heavy-duty industrial environments, but it does make it difficult to use if you are 80 years old and have arthritis.

So, keep these issues in mind if you are considering this phone. From a system design standpoint, the ability to add multiple lines and handset is great, and the fact that it operates in the 900MHz is a major plus if you are planning to install a 802.11b RF LAN. (I'm surprised that cordless phone system vendors are not considering this issue more; I've talked to Apple and Siemens and they have confirmed that 2.4GHz phones and 802.11b RF LANs can and do interfere with each other.)

Disappointing.......2004-02-20

I got this camera as a birthday present six months back. I was looking forward to getting into digital photography.

Here are the results so far.
1. It takes a long time for the camera to settle on an image and allow you to take a photo. That's no good in a fast moving situation like a kids birthday party.
2. It takes too long for the flash to recharge, danger being that you miss photo opportunities.
3. As others have said, it eats batteries. You have to buy the lithium pack to get any kind of longevity. And then, you shouldn't use the view screen if you can avoid it.
4. Photo quality is very poor, even on the highest resolution. Any disposable plastic 35mm will give you just as good or better on film.
5. On high resolution there are very few photos, so you need to buy a card to get additional storage.
6. The movie option requires really good lighting, so I have only really got it to work in daylight out of doors.

On the positive side it is cheap and pretty easy to learn to use. It is very easy to transfer images to the computer, but I suspect that is due to the quality of my Dell, not the camera. The digital 2X3 zoom option only works on high resolution shots, but it does work pretty well!

The movie clips only play in Quicktime, so don't bother trying to load them onto other media players.

3 MONTHS LATER LOOKING TO BUY A REPLACEMENT.......2003-12-01

...this camera eats batteries like nothing else I've ever experienced. Cant think of anything in its favor.. its bulky and ugly.. and I feel embarrassed asking someone to take a picture for me, because it's difficult to use and very tempermental! Just arrived back from Chicago where I took 25 pictures.. and had to buy 4 new batteries along the way.. already searching online for a good replacement

Absolute Junk.......2003-09-18

I bought this camera for my 6 year old son's B-Day. Before giving it to him I tried it out to make sure that it worked fine. Here's the result:

Pro:
- Simple to use.
- Inexpensive.

Con:
- Very mediocre quality pictures.
- After taking about 3 pictures, you have wait about 10 seconds between taking pictures (none of the buttons will work until it recharges itself).
- Eats batteries like crazy. After using it for about 20 minutes taking 10 pictures it was nearly out of battery power.

Returned it immediately and got a Sony.

Bought the kd-220z at Frys for $120 with a $20 rebate and tried it for about 15 photos until the two new alkaline batteries went
dead. When I opened the package there was an insert from the factory which recommended use of a lithium CRV3 battery which came with the camera, even though the camera is touted as working with 2 alkaline batteries. The camera worked ok and the pictures were of good quality, though it took a second or two or three to actually take a picture after pressing the button. The menues and operation were effective but crude and slow - have to keep turning the display button on and off when switching from display to shoot. I returned it because it took so few photos with the alkaline batteries. I get the feeling the factory knew of this shortcoming and now includes the more expensive (to replace) lithium package. But then the cost is only $100.
