It's a good value card..........2007-06-19

I purchased this card because I wanted to "try out" using my PC as a PVR to later stream the video to a media player. With hard drive prices what they are, it seemed to be time and this card was cheap so why not?

OK, first the bad news:

1) The remote did not work and I don't know why. This was not a problem for me because I'm not using the computer monitor as a TV. This would have been a problem had this been my intent. Just one of those things.

2) The picture quality of recorded video is what others have described as "VHS" quality and this is accurate. Of course, at this price range, it is what is to be expected from recording analog video.

3) On installation, I had video but no sound. The trouble shooting guide correctly identified this as the volume on the input monitor being muted by default. The problem was that on the sound volume control panel, the input monitor wasn't shown by default. I had to go into options and select it to be shown. Took awhile to figure that out. Otherwise, installation was pretty simple.

The good news:

The card does exactly what it says it will do. Television plays on the PC just fine and its kinda neat to be able to put the news broadcast in a corner while you do something else (live picture quality is exceptional).

Setup was a breeze as it found all the cable channels and I was able to edit them with correct names (for instance change Cable 42 to TBS).

It came with a free subscription to a program guide customized for your area that works seamlessly with the TV scheduler to record shows. The recorder has worked beautifully for me turning itself on and off to record shows. It creates about a 1.2 gig mpg file for a 2 hour show, it lets me tell it where to put the file and the file streams beautifully to the media center.

At this price range, it's a good value card. If you are looking for DVD quality video and sound, you'll have to spend more than $40.

Works Perfectly for Me.......2007-04-27

I have owned one of these for 2 years now. I bought it to record shows from cable TV and it has worked flawlessly. I bought a cable splitter to split the signal between my TV and this card and there is enough signal to power both. A one hour show creates a 580 mb mpg file that I watch with Windows Media Player. A zoom level of 100% fills a 2" by 3" window that still leaves space for doing other things. I have a large hard drive, but it still starts to fill up if I don't watch and delete the shows.

Commercials are easy to skip on recorded shows. When you get to a commercial segment, you just click on the scroll bar and quickly find where the show resumes.

I have a slower computer than the minimum that they recommend, but it only uses about 80% of the cpus as measured by task manager when its recording a show. It uses much less if I just watch a TV program, about 30%.

The card comes with nanoPEG editor that I use to cut segments from recorded shows to take to work. It is very easy to use.

Does what you would expect for $50........2006-12-03

I've just discovered the secret settings on this board, so listen up. I understand why people complain about this product, but its 16 bit video they are mostly complaining about, they just haven't found the 32bit setting which is far superior in color and resolution. I can honestly say that NOW I'm fairly impressed with this board as a TV tuner, which is why I bought the thing. However, as a capture card for transferring video it leaves a lot to be desired.

Installation and setup was a breeze. No problems with the audio as Hauppage includes an external cable that attaches from the card to your audio input on your sound card, so there's no fumbling around inside your system looking for a connector on the motherboard.

I'm using a standard cable hookup, and auto scan detected all my channels and I was able to customize and delete the channels I don't want. There are video settings for changing brightness/hue/saturation and audio settings as well. NOW, here's the secret....after you get this installed, go to the desktop toolbar by the clock, locate the little black "WinTV" icon, and right click to get two separate functions....click the option "WINTV32.EXE" This will open a 32 bit version of WinTV, now set your color and make sure you click all options for "deinterlace" under Preferences. Vooahlah! This 32 bit setting will NOT let you record, but TV programs look fantastic in this mode! The 32bit mode will also allow you to surf the web, send email, work in other programs and the TV window is maintained on your desktop for continual viewing....the 16 bit mode wont allow this so every click of the mouse hides the TV window.

Comes with a remote control that works fine but has way too many features but it does work with the IR cable supplied. Recording TV is a breeze with either manual settings for DviX or MPEG1, or you can program channels through the free Titan TV guide just by clicking on the program in the guide. However, some back to back programs will "overlap" and wont let you preset, and you cant record one channel and watch another. Oh well.

I also recorded a VHS tape and found the following. Resolution again is degraded over what would display on an analog/digital TV. You can easily set the target location to save the finished file, and it requires no "post processing" to store on your hard drive. I found the MPEG setting gave me a superior picture to DviX, but I had no sound whereas I didnt have that problem with Dvix. But the MPEG option is compatible with more players i.e. Power DVD, WinDVD, VLC Media Player, and with DviX several of the built in player options are completely disabled. You can of course play back these recordings on the WIN2000 player, but there are no options allowing color or audio adjustments. Its bare bones. Also the input for your VCR/Camera are RCA video input only (no s-video) and you'll need an RCA-Pin jack to plug into the card, there is no RCA jack for incoming sound.

All in all a pretty decent product for the money when you discover all the hidden features. Its actually the first TV tuner I've ever owned that worked and that included Aver Media and other ATI based tuners. BTW, I'm running a dual core AMD 4600+ processor with 2Gig of ram so I dont have any lag problems. If you want HD and higher resolution options this is NOT the card for you. 5 Geeks

Good Value.......2006-11-09

Works on my Dell Dimension with WinXP Pro. Quality is limited to 320x240. The recording software has several bugs--don't set 2 recordings to start at the same time, even though it lets you! Be aware that the encoding is software-only, so both the card and the driver need to work in order for you to be able to record (other cards let you stream MPEG video). Oh, and don't tell the Scheduler to close WinTV when it's done recording; your file will be corrupted and unviewable. If you can get around the quirks, it's a great deal if you can get it for under $45 total cost.

picture quality is poor.......2005-05-07

The quality of the image on screen is so poor, that it reminds me the quality of VHS in the 1980s. Some of the positive reveiws seem to be written by some one so technical I wonder if they actually work for the company. In addition, these reviews were written in 2003. It is now 2005. Better quality product are available. I AM OVERALL NOT HAPPY WITH THE PRODUCT AT ALL.

Poor Video Quality -- Will Not Work w/MCE.......2005-01-14

My main gripe is that this card WILL NOT work with Window's new Media Center Edition. You have to install it first to find that out. Follow that up with poor video quality and a totally inadequate web support function and you have a device that's below average.

To begin, I use an eMachine T3025 (equipped with AMD Athlon processor)running Windows XP Home Edition.

+ Out of the box, the WinTV tuner was easy to install. The installation booklet dictated what is to be expected when first installing the driver. After that, the program was easy to run and setup.

- The video quality was similar to watching a VCR recorded show without the annoying white lines that pass through the screen,to say the least it was poor. The sound quality of the tuner only came in mono, and to say the least AGAIN poor.

It was a good buy and easy to install and run, but the major downfall was its poor video and audio quality.

Great low-priced TV card.......2003-12-01

This is a great little TV card, you can watch TV in a resizable window, on up to full screen. You can capture video (provided your PC is fast enough to keep up). It has a coaxial input for cable, and an RCA connector for a camcorder for example.

On the downside it only does mono sound, which is fine for most people, but the reason I gave it for stars instead of five is the way it connects to the soundcard. A cable is required to attach from the audio out to the line-in on the soundcard. It would have been nice to have the option of using an internal cable for sound cards that could support them, or a line-in pass-through so that you can connect something else to line-in without unplugging the TV card. The reason that this is annoying is because the back of the PC is usually hard to get at to change plugs.

Still, this is something that won't affect everybody. I would still recommend this card for anyone looking for a cheap TV card. Works perfectly with Linux also.

works fine on AMD.......2003-11-29

Contrary to the other review here, this board works fine on my AMD Athlon (1.4ghz). Decent video quality, not quite as good as the ATI TV-Wonder but half the price, much better than equivalently priced USB TV tuners.

USe this card fot VCR, no DVD.......2002-05-27

I had this card to make VCD from VHSs I shot
in the past two years. This is great. I have
video studio. The resolution is about 352x240.
Now I upgrade video studio, it will output
DVD quality video, more specificlly, SVCD.
The picture doesn't look good. One more reason
is my VHS looks pretty dark because I shot them
in room, not out under bright shine.
But overall, you got what you paid for.

NEC 1770NX.......2006-04-01

I bought a Nec 1770NX lcd display.
However, it is not very good. The text is clear and the detail is ok, but the brightness and contrast are a problem. I had to spend a lot of time adjusting to get it so that it wasn't too light, or to dark. The contrast is just not enough on this monitor. It suffers
from a washed out look.

This is strange, at work I have an NEC 1760vx and it is fine.
I also have at work, an NEC 1980Sxi, and it is great.

Excellent monitor, extremely good value!.......2005-04-25

I previously purchased a Samsung SyncMaster 710n 17" LCD Monitor from Amazon (via TigerDirect) and was not totally satisified with the image quality. Because of a tragic shortage of desk space (eaten up by hulking CRT monitors) I revisited LCD panels with this NEC device (again from TigerDirect, but ordered through Amazon).

The NEC is by far the superior product. It is equally bright, the colours are strong and clear, image rendering is excellent. Also, there is absolutely no subtle flickering or image jitter which I noticed with the Samsung. No matter how much I fiddled with that one, I could never get the image to be both rock-steady and totally clear. The NEC has never exhibited any such problem and worked excellently without any adjustment (other than the 'auto-setup' it went through), right out of the box.

I strongly recommend this monitor. It works extremely well, and it is not expensive. As a replacement for a CRT monitor, and perhaps in a bid to reclaim desk space, it is perfect.
