Great card - Work well with MythTV (Linux)
Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-250 (Model 980).......2007-01-18
The product works flawlessly. I have it installed in an old PIII w/512 MB RAM and I have no problems at all. I only wish I had researched a little further and found out that the newer 150 model has exactly the same functionality for less $$.
The one to buy.......2007-01-05
The Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-250 has been working steadily for several months.
I tried Plextor M402U and ADS Tech USB hardware encoder boxes. They both failed in 2 days. I have a Novatech (software conversion) USB box. Any Software converter will be SLOW. The Novatech requires conversion to MPG after capture so i actually only use it to take snapshots.
I have a disk partition i use for capturing..editing.. then write it to DVD.. then delete the files, thus no need to defrag all the time. The programs write in streams : very fast but makes for Very fragmented drives.
Read all the other reviews. The included software works for me. (DO go to the web site and download the latest drivers..programs, to avoid the WinDVD conflict) I looked at other programs... I guess it is all in what you want to do with it.
I gave it 5 stars, in truth one of the >$1000 converters would deserve the 5 stars, but considering the price difference, you get what you pay for.
Excellent Linux Support/Documentation.......2006-12-14
I've been using this card for three years in my MythTV system under both Fedora and Gentoo. Currently I have it running on ivtv 0.9.x and the 2.6.19 kernel without flaw. Each new version of ivtv makes the configuration easier but I would not recommend upgrading until you have to because the way you set default audio and video tends to change with every major release and upgrading ivtv does not add features.
My only complaint would be that about six months about I decided I didn't like having to point my remote at the IR sensor and bought and ATI Remote Wonder II. I should have gotten this combo a long time ago. If this is a concern, I'd recommend a combo of that remote and the pvr-150 MCE card as the price ends up being the same and you get RCA jacks on the card instead of having to use a phono converter.
Oh, and I had the card working on windows the day I got it, but quickly formatted and began install MythTV so I cannot comment extensively on the windows software features. I'll be buying more Hauppauge cards in the future.
Great card - works AOK for me, Steep learning curve........2006-10-07
I bought and installed this Hauppauge 250 card and the supplied software in my HP desktop over 2 years ago.
I have a 3GHz Intel P4 and 1 GIG of RAM and use Windows XP Home w/SP1.
I use it to watch/record TV and to transfer my home movies on S-VHS to mpeg files and then converted that to DVD.
The 250 works beautifully.
There is a learning curve but once you master it, it does the job.
DVDs made from tapes actually look better than the tapes themselves.
Somehow, the conversion to digital minimizes the color noise inherent in VHS tape.
There is no loss of detail IF you do it right and play your tapes on a first rate VHS machine.

Amazon.com Product Description
HP's Pavilion zd7310 notebook is a mobile powerhouse, providing performance you expect from a powerful desktop in a highly portable package. Under the hood, the zd7310 offers a 3.0 GHz hyper-threaded Intel Pentium 4 processor, an 80 GB hard drive, and 512 MB of installed RAM. This cooly designed notebook also features a 17-inch screen, 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro audio, 54g wi-fi connectivity (with SpeedBooster support), and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive.
The Basics
- Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive is larger than the average notebook's, enabling road warriors more than enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software.
- Processor: The hyper-threaded 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system, helping to deliver faster transistors and increased performance. It also features a 1 MB L2 cache and a blazingly fast 800 MHz front-side bus speed
A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking.
- Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (2 x 256 MB, 333 MHz, DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB)--a must for taking full advantage of this notebook's powerhouse capabilities.
- CD/DVD Drive: The combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive can write and read CDs at 24x. It can read DVDs at 16x.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard keyboard with scroll bar and integrated numeric keypad, and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad.
Sound and Graphics
The Nvidia GeForce FX Go5200 provides a great cinematic experience when playing back DVDs as well as smooth gameplay. It features 64 MB of dedicated DDR video RAM. The 17-inch WXGA high-definition BrightView widescreen display has a 1440 x 900-pixel resolution. The integrated audio card offers 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible audio through the internal Harman Kardon speakers.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The zd7310us has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. The 125 HSM/SpeedBooster support will enable it to be ready for tomorrow's 125 Mbps wireless LANs. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including super-fast USB 2.0 and Firewire:
- 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video out
- 1 parallel port
- 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
- 5-in-1 memory card reader (compatible with Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, and SmartMedia)
- 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). Other preloaded software includes Microsoft Money, Norton Antivirus 2004 (with 60-day LiveUpdate subscription), Adobe Acrobat Reader, Encarta Plus, HP Image Zone Plus, InterVideo WinDVD Creator and Home Theater, Muvee autoProducer, Sonic RecordNow, and Apple iTunes.
The included HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software makes it easy to organize, edit, share, print, protect, and store your photos and video clips. Organize and find your photos easily by timeline, keywords, and/or location using the unique photo-globe mapping tool. Remove red eye and fix other common problems. Share your photos quickly via e-mails that include thumbnails with links to the full-sized images--without downloading time-consuming attachments.
Dimensions and Weight
At 9.5 pounds, the zd7310 isn't the most easily portable notebook, and is best served as a desktop replacement. It measures 15.67 x 10.94 x 1.67 inches (L x W x H).
Power
It's powered by a 12-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which provides an average of battery life of around 2 hours (depending on usage).
What's in the Box
This package contains the HP Pavilion zd7310us notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limiited hardware warranty.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Desktop Replacment. Not very mobile........2006-04-01
I have owned this laptop for almost a year and a half.
I needed a desktop replacement for my small home office and it has been wonderful for that.
This machine gets quite hot if held on the lap and even on the desk, the loud fans run fairly frequently. I purchased a notebook "lift" from Office Max which allows air to circulate beneath the machine - this keeps the machine cooler and the fans run less.
The battery life is only about 2 hours so I usually move the power cord around with me if I'm attempting to use the notebook as an actual "laptop" computer on my lap. The cord is longish and bulky, this machine really isn't very portable.
The machine is also quite heavy. Newer 17" screen notebooks are lighter and run a bit cooler.
The machine has been VERY stable, has not crashed and I have only had one problem under warranty. The keyboard and mouse stopped working a couple of months into ownership. The HP people were wonderful and the turn around time for repair was surprisingly quick - I got my computer back in a couple of days with a new keyboard.
My CD burner stopped working recently, but the repair is covered under my extended warranty through Circuit City, where purchased.
I am a graphic and web designer and run fairly large programs and have a lot of open windows in Firefox. The machine is very fast and has had plenty of room for my large digital illustration files, many fonts, and various software programs. I could probably count on one hand the times it has frozen or crashed during a heavy application.
I am looking to purchase a new laptop as I would like something more portable, less hot, and with a longer battery life. But this is a fantastic desktop replacement, nice screen, stable, and fast computer.
Great Laptop.......2005-11-01
I have owned this laptop for over a year now, and it runs every game I put on it (Not on full graphics though). I watch all my dvd's on it too because it is better then watching it on my small TV. I have had no problems with it, except that the fans are really loud and can get pretty hot, so can the adapter. Also the battery life on it only lasts a few hours, like 2 hours total.
I give this laptop 5 out of 5!
Overall a nice machine--except for the fan noise.......2005-03-01
I've had this laptop for about 4 months now, and the overall performance has been as expected for a Pentium 4 machine.
One serious downside though is the fan noise. For some reason I expect laptops to be quiet, but this one is not. The fan runs constantly, and is quite loud. I suppose this is necessary when using all the capabilities of the P4, but for normal web surfing and such "light duty" tasks, it is not. I think HP could have designed in a smarter fan speed controller, so that it only sounds like a vacuum cleaner when the CPU is really getting a workout (gaming and such). I feel it was a cop out on the part of the HP designers not to include a smarter fan speed controller.
Other than that, I think it's one of the best values out there. The display is great, as is the built-in numeric keypad, and the included software can't be beat.
Very good notebook.......2005-01-06
Got this to because of the integrated wireless card to use all around the house. Connection is great, speed is awesome and display is good. As said in other reviews, it is heavy, gets hot and the battery life is not for extreme mobile usage. I have watched several movies and burned CD's and I have yet to notice any significant lag time. The speakers are better than most notebooks, but not as good as I expected from Harman Kardon. One feature I would have liked was a second headphone jack, but I can live without it...lol. Overall, I would recommend it as a good notebook if you are buying it for the size of the screen. Otherwise I would recommend looking at Toshiba or Sony.
Good Book.......2004-12-27
I have a 7000 series notebook. P4 3Ghz, 1Gb Ram, 60Gb Hard Drive, Geforce card,wireless,DVD Burner etc.
Works great love it. Got it from HP.com though for financing. Ran bout $700 cheaper than Dell's XPS Notebook. If I had the cash I would go for an Alienware. But my Hp is doing good. Got it for gaming and graphics work.

An inexpensive option to an Apple Cinema Display.......2007-03-19
For quite a while I'd been looking for a widescreen monitor to go along with my Mac Pro, but trying to stay clear of the expensive Apple Cinema Displays. Recently it dawned on me that I could get as much (or more) screen real estate by putting two 17-inch monitors side by side. So I set out to look for another Envision monitor, since the other one I owned (the one I was using with the Mac Pro already) had worked out just fine for us.
When I found this silver beauty I knew I was in front of the solution I had been looking for. The design is not unlike the Cinema Displays, with silver casing and a curved stand, but besides this and the impeccable image quality, most important is the price tag: for a fraction of the price of a comparable Apple monitor, you can get this one, which will look just as good next to an Apple computer.
So, if you like me want to fit your Apple tower with a good looking monitor with good image quality, without spending an arm and a leg: seek no more. And if you still are lucky, you may be able to find it for even less (I paid $[...] for mine) at Costco.

Customer Reviews:
Mixed Review.......2006-05-30
I am a business technical buyer. We tested a dozen units and gave them good reviews: clear display, reasonably priced. 18 months later those have had zero failures in a business setting.
We then ordered well over a hundred units and almost immediately had support stand failures in 1/3 of the units: the stand would not hold the position of the display. With some difficulty they were all replaced under warranty. The replacements have performed correctly.
Bottom line: we have had no problems with the panel electronics over a 9-18 month period; we have had problems with one batch of the stands.
Not a good buy.......2006-04-27
I saved for almost a year to buy this monitor for my husband's 70th birthday. He died 1 1/2 months after that and then the monitor lasted 14 months. After telling me on the phone it was under warranty I sent it to them and they wrote back saying it was the panel and not warranteed. They wanted $175.00 to fix it. I asked them to dispose of it. I would never buy another Envision.
Envision 17" LCD Monitor.......2006-03-16
The monitor died 8 days after I plugged it in. It never recovered, and the service center was not able to revive it. Ultimately they chose to replace the Envision monitor with an AOC monitor which I am currently using. It's been 8 days since I plugged it in. I remain an optimist.
Top Notch Deal!.......2005-12-31
I've had this LCD monitor for 1 year now using it all day long with my main computer. Don't be put off by the goofy attachments, this is an excellent monitor for the price. I am thoroughly satisfied and happy I chose this one, so if I were looking for a replacement I would definitely check out one of the latest versions. I believe they make a 7550 pro version now, or something like that. But the one I've got shows no signs of wear, so I'm sure I'll have it for a long time to come. And actually, if I had this on a normal desk, I might even use the goofy attachments. Why not? Might be fun.
Excellent for the office!.......2005-06-23
I was very surprised by the quality of the dispaly on this monitor. The 90-degree rotation feature is awesome for applications such as Word, and browsing the web. Great value!

Drawing on years of experience in auto focusing technology, the new Center-Cross 9-Point system's coverage extends not just vertically and horizontally from the center point, but diagonally into all four quadrants of the frame. The result is sharp focus even when your subject's position changes unexpectedly.Autofocusing speed is one of the Maxxum 70's greatest strengths, so you're always ready to capture those magic moments you want to preserve forever. As an added benefit of the Center-Cross 9-Point AF system, the Maxxum 70 boasts a remarkable new level of responsiveness and auto-tracking ability when subjects are moving toward or away from the camera even diagonally. In addition, a red mark is superimposed on the image in the viewfinder to provide you with visual confirmation of the auto-tracking focus point. The built-in flash has a guide number of 16, and provides powerful illumination with up to 28mm wide-angle coverage. It offers a choice of Auto Flash, Fill Flash and Flash Cancel modes, as well as a Red-Eye Reduction mode that's perfect for parties and indoor events. When used in combination with any of the (D) series lenses, ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) assures proper illumination of your subject even when shooting against a very dark or light background. High-quality materials and construction provide a solid feel with sure handling. Operation is easy and intuitive, with a new 'dual-dial' control layout that provides ready access to mode and function settings.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Camera for Price!.......2006-10-01
This camera is light, easy to use yet feature rich. I compared it to digital (still to expensive for comparable resolution to 35mm film) and other SLR cameras. The auto focus is fast and reliable, although in low light it strobes its built in flash to assist with focusing. The built in flash is fairly powerful and convenient because it is always available. The complex metering system has handled difficult lighting situations well.
The focus may also be done manually, with focus assist. The f stop and/or shutter speed can be set manually. In addition to the default fully automatic setting there are 5 built in subject programs designed for portraits, close ups, sports, etc. There is a depth of field preview which I have not found on similar priced cameras.
Overall I am quite happy with this camera. I was also happy to find that it works with my old Minolta compatible Vivitar 100-300 telephoto lens, and my old Minolta dedicated 3200i flash. For the money I highly recommend you consider this 35mm camera.
Camera good.......2005-10-24
The camera has been fantastic! It works marvelously, and the zoom lenses are amazing.

Judge the camera for what it is - and READ THE MANUAL!.......2005-06-04
First, I would like to comment on previous reviews:
As for the lens shadows: REMOVE THE SUN SHADE from the lens. If you leave the sun shade on during flash/zoom photography, you will get the "shade/shadow effect" you talked about. It's not the lens, it's the shade. This information is included in the manual (always READ THE MANUAL before posting negative reviews!)
To the user disappointed in the manual focus: USE THE FOCUSING INDICATOR. Even in manual focus, the camera will still check for focus. When the small green dot inside the view finder goes solid, you are in focus. Again, this information is in the manual. READ THE MANUAL before posting negative reviews!
Overall, the camera is an excellent value. It is packed with features that were exclusive to cameras costing hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars more just a few short years ago. Prices are dropping due to the change in market focus (everyone wants to go digital.) Where else can you get a feature packed camera like this one for under $300?
For the beginner, a good film camera like this one is a great place to start. Learn the basics and KNOW the camera before making snap judgements. If you take the time to learn the camera and how to take pictures, you will NOT be disappointed by this hardware.
Lens Shadows Very Disappointing.......2005-05-17
I purchased this package as I'm an avid fan of Minolta Cameras... and have to say I'm disappointed with the lenses. Either during wide-angle or 100% zoom, the corners of each photo have the lens in them.
I'm in the process of contacting Minolta about the issue because I love the camera but can't take the chance of losing good photos with the lenses.
Great 35mm SLR AF Camera for the money!.......2005-02-22
I've researched SLR cameras for the last few months and I always came back to the Maxxum models by Konica Minolta. Sure, price was a big factor, but also the reviews across the web from other owners and especially regarding the popular and very successful Maxxum 50 finally led me to a purchase of the Maxxum 70. Although this camera seems very sophisticated and it lets you do a lot of the creative settings manually, it's easy in P (green P in a box) which are the auto functions you can and the focusing is just perfect. It's also worth spending the approx. $70 more for the Maxxum 70 vs. the Maxxum 50 because of the focusing features and the in-screen/viewfinder display. The user guide is very helpful and explains the operations of the automatic camera functions well, although some photography knowledge will be helpful to understand especially the manual settings. So far I've only shot a roll of film and it came out perfect. The only little thing that bothered me was that in the viewfinder there were a few very tiny spots and that's why I had to exchange it for another Maxxum 70 unit, and that's why I only gave it 4 stars, although if everything would have been perfect from the start, this camera is definitely worth a five-star rating. This Maxxum 70 is a keeper and it seems to be a solid quality camera -- only time will tell if it holds up, but so far so good. The price just can't be beat, especially with all the features that the Maxxum 70 offers. Also the 28-100mm lens is a nice feature for this price range as most other models come with only a 28-80mm lens, and for a camera like this you most certainly want the 28-100mm lens.
