The IDM-831 is a very small portable disc player ideal for travelers, students, and anyone looking for a more intimate viewing experience. The device is a full-featured DVD player with multi-angle, multi-language, and parental content lock capabilities. Aside from the usual fast-forward and chapter-forward functions, it also has a time search feature that lets you go directly to a specific timecode location in a DVD. It also has a playback zoom feature that lets you zoom up to four times in on a still frame or moving image, movable with arrow keys.

Audio
IDM-831 has a built-in speaker and two headphone ports, making shared viewing easier. Good feature and initial quality for the price.......2006-04-05

I just owned this unit for a few days so I am unable to judge its long term reliability. I had one glitch right out of the box: the LCD screen was completely dark! I connected it to a TV and everything looked OK. After fiddling for a while then I finally found the culprit: the "line select" switch was kind of set in the middle. After moving it to the "out" position then the picture came up and there are no dead pixels. However, there is nothing mentioned in the manual about what's the exact funtion of this switch. In summary,

The Cons:
* Poor documentation.
* The vertical view angle is limited.
* Not S-video cable which requires a special connector.
* No "seek" buttons on the console.
* Display dot pitch is kind of big (the screen door effect)

The Pros:
* Versatile audio capability, good speakers.
* Works with DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD+RW.
* Changeable region setting as mentioned in the previous review.
* The screen brightness, aspect ratio and color is easy to adjust.
* Relatively low price (from another vendor)

Horrible DVD Player.......2006-01-26

I purchased the 853, it's the same unit with an 8.5 inch screen. The first unit I purchased had bright red pixels all over. I took it back and exchanged it for the same model, the second one played the DVD for about 30 seconds and then choked. So I turned it off and back on again, but all it would do is say "Disc Unknown". I took it back for a full refund. This company makes the worst DVD players I have ever seen.

Product was defective - had to return .......2005-09-01

This player did not work. The screen went totally black within 10 seconds after putting the first dvd in it. It had sound, but no picture whatsoever. Had to return and did not buy it again. Went with a Mintek instead and it is working fine.

Gone through 4 in 10 months.......2005-04-14

This is the worst electronic product I have ever purchased. Returned once to store, then the next three times to the company due to black and white bars at the top of the screen every time and had to pay them an extra $50. for the aggrivation. Now they think to appease me by sending me a model that is much cheaper than the one that I originally purchased. I have since read numerous reviews following the same problem. And to think, they continue to make this DVD player.

Great portable player!.......2005-02-05

I've had this unit for about 2 months now and have never experienced the problems I've read on this site. What I like about the player is how light and portable it is..Not only can you use it in your car while traveling but you can move it to your other TVs in your house and hook up to the audio video input on your sets and your're ready to roll!! The picture is amazingly sharp compared to some of the other players I have seen and the screen is designed for widescreen DVDs..in other words the film fits perfectly in the screen!

It comes with a car adaptor and a really nice and thin remote control that works wonderfully! I highly recommend this unit!!

Felt silly after buying it.......2007-08-31

I bought this travel charger together with the SD800 camera. It does work fine, so far. But the Canon instructions make explicit that their included charger, which is *much* more compact, can accept a range of voltages using any standard travel converter/adapter. If you have such a plug adapter anyway, then it turns out this travel charger is superfluous. If you don't already have one, you can get one for less than this thing costs, have the added benefit of a converter for other items (hairdryer, whatever) and still save on bulk when you travel compared to this awkward hunk of plastic.

The packaging is the bonded plastic stuff that can't easily be opened without either getting injured or swearing, or both.

Mine came with the adapter for NB5l (as well as the other mentioned adapters). It works as well as the original Canon. The only shortcoming is that it is thicker than the Canon original.

I ordered this for my Canon NB-5L battery since the description says it will work with all NB Canon Batteries, but when I got it there was no adaptor for the NB-5L battery. I returned it and they were great with refunding my money.

A great addition to equipment bag.......2007-08-23

I have a Fuji S9100 digital camera which uses AA batteries. Now, the camera is really quite good so why a really good camera would be underpowered by AA batteries instead of Li-ion battery is beyond my understanding. So, I began looking for an alternative source of power and found this product.

If you need lots of instruction and information manuals, this is NOT for you. No instructions came in the package. But, from reading user reviews, I knew that and bought it anyway. It took some trial and error and a bit of time but I finally found the correct cable for my camera and got things hooked up correctly. What a great setup. Now I had power to burn (so to speak) and with the AA batteries inside as backup, life was so much better. No more running out of power only a couple of hours after I started. I charge it at night while I sleep and it's ready to go in the morning for early day of pre-sunrise shooting.

I haven't taken the time to really measure exactly how long this battery will last in one charge but I will say, I've used it all day (usually 7-8hours) at horse shows, rarely turning the camera off and not had a problem.
I've owned it for several months now and use it often without problems.

The reason for only 3 stars is the lack of instructions/information. Otherwise, it would have 4 1/2 stars.

Digipower DPS-9000 Univerasl Power Pack for Digital Cameras & Camcorders.......2007-01-10

Performs extremely well on my Panasonic DMC FZ20 camera. Practical, it screws on bottom of the camera, yet it provides additional thread for tripod mounting.

Slightly disappointed that this unit appears to be losing power faster than my other DPS-9000 Power Pack which lasts longer when used under similar conditions.

I ordered this unit based on my positive experience from the previous one. It turned out to be somewhat less enduring. Nevertheless, I remain strongly affirmative about the DPS-9000 Power Pack.

Not compatible with "most" cameras.......2006-11-03

This item was mistakenly shipped to me by Amazon instead of a different battery charger. I thought I might keep it, as the package claims that it is compatible with most Canon digital cameras, plus many other brands. of the 1 Nikon and 3 Canon cameras in use at my office and the one Canon I own personally, it isn't compatible with any of them. Also, there are no instructions included to explain the various components. Check the company's website for the device you own before ordering this item.

Pretty good unit, all up........2004-12-18

I bought the DPS 9000 for my Fuji Finepix S602. I had added an external flash to the camera which left it a little top heavy, so I thought I'd attach the DPS unit below (it screws into the tripod mount below) and get the center of gravity of my camera a little lower.

The unit shipped well by Ritz. Basically, it wasn't heavy enough to lower the center of gravity much. However, I do now manage to get about 350 shots to a charge, even with heavy reviewing of shots. Keep in mind, I review shots through the viewfinder and almost never use the LCD screen. Also, I'm using an external flash with its own battery power so the 350 shots are being taken without powering a flash.

All told, I heard the DPS-9000 packs 1850 maH which is pretty respectable for a lithium battery.

1850mah doesn't sound like a lot of juice in comparison to a NimH battery, but keep in mind the DPS voltage level stays fairly constant -- usable to the last drop!

Minor quibble is the Fuji uses 4.5 volts so I had to use a connector cord with a little "step down" box on it, which I had to duct tape to the side of the actual battery.

Also, the cord end that connects to the camera 4.5 volt input kept slipping out, so I used duct tape to hold it in place.

The DPS 9000, for most cameras, uses a simple little cord (with no voltage stepdown box) to connect the battery unit to the AC input of the camera. Be prepared to use a little duct tape to hold down the cord so it doesnt stick out and start lassoing small objects in your camera case.

The charger has an eye that starts red and glows green (and flashes??) when the battery is charged. The manual that comes with the unit is pretty woeful so you won't get any additional information about what the flashing green light means. Also, if you reposition the charger in any way, the light goes from green to red: obviously a little sensitive and flimsy.

However, don't let the above comments put you off. For $40, you get a lot of juice in a very small little unit. Forget the double "A" batteries and go for the DPS-9000.

Besides, when other photographers see your duct-taped camerea with that extra battery unit attached to the bottom --- they'll know you mean business!

The real value, however, is having the confidence to go out and take a couple hundred shots and know you won't have to replace the batteries half way through your day (although take along a spare set of AA rechargeables, or better yet, a second DPS-9000!)
