5 out of 5 stars Excellant Piece of Electronics for the PRICE!.......2007-09-23

MY GOD! I cannot believe some of the other reviews for this item! Complaints because it does not have an Eject Button on the remote control?!!! Have we become so bloody lazy in the U.S. that we cannot get off our butt and press the Eject Button on the face of the machine! Give me a break! I purchased my unit earlier this year through Amazon and while it was a little difficult to understand the different functions at first it has worked wonderfully since then. Yes, from time to time it will not switch from DVD to VCR without pressing the VCR Eject Button to re-set the machine, at the US$57.99 I paid for the unit it is a small price to pay. I have owned both Philips and Philips/Magnavox TV's, VCR's and DVD Players since the 1980's and have found them all to be very durable and long lasting if treated with respect. DVD Picture and Sound are fine on this machine and the Picture and Sound on the VCR are really dependant on the tape quality being played or recorded upon. I believe this is an exellent piece for the cost and would recomend it to those looking for an inexpensive DVD/VCR Combo!

1 out of 5 stars Piece of Crap.......2006-12-10

I bought this for my elderly mother - not a whiz at electronics but she knows how to insert a disc and hit play. However, it seems the machine doesn't know how to scan a disc and play. We would get various screen messages, "insert a disc," "faulty disc," "loading," but the thing wouldn't kick in. We'd eject and clean the disc. We'd eject and and re-load the disc. We'd turn it off and on again; "insert a disc," "faulty disc," "loading." Sometimes, after who knows which combination, Oh! it would play! Pretty darn frustrating for an elderly lady and her daughter so I swapped it out for my Samsung 4600. Now she is happily watching Christmas with Andre Rieu and I am listening to jet aircraft approching as I try to watch a VHS cassett. (it's pretty loud)

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2006-12-01

I purchased one of these combos and was very disappointed...It will be returned immediately. I purchased from Value City and the DVD tray does not work....a malfunction, I assume. It is definitely a waste of time and money. I higly Reccommend not wasting your money on this one!

1 out of 5 stars Dead after 2 minutes.......2006-08-14

Can't say much for the video or sound quality, menu options, or anything really, since this thing broke after 2 minutes of watching Monsters, Inc. on DVD. Playback just froze, the thing stopped recognizing that DVDs were in unless you turned the thing off and then back on again, and after another minute it wouldn't even start playing the thing at all, just whirred a lot.

So, dud.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Price.......2006-06-15

I bought this DVD in January 2006 and have not regretted to this day. There is the issue of the eject button being absent but then again, when you eject via remote control, you still have to get up to get the DVD out of the player so maybe it is not so necessary to have an eject button. I've had no problems with this player playing my home made DVDs unlike others. It is a bit difficult to set up but besides that it is a great purchase.

2 out of 5 stars Hard to review because HDD/DVD recorder needs repair........2007-04-25

I had watched a total of three DVDs using the HDD/DVD recorder when the loading drawer became stuck (as signiifed by a "BLOCKED" message on the unit's screen). I had not yet tried to record a DVD. I actually thought that the "BLOCKED" message was because I was trying to record something from the HDD to a DVD. I'm still not sure if this can be done.

The home theater surround sound works very well in my viewing setting. I don't have a large room, so the relative distortion and audio response profile is not very demanding.

I give the HDD/DVD Recorder 1 star based on reliability and 5 stars based on the premise. Based on my setting, I give the home theater stereo 4 stars for the money. The total best that I can give the entire package is 2 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Great system, but remotes leave a lot to be desired.......2007-04-01

Sound system is great. DVD player/recorder is great. All the features I've used so far seem to work as expected. However, the remote controls are not so great-- especially the DVD remote. The sound system remote is okay, except it has DVD controls that apparently don't do anything for the DVD system. What's the point? The DVD remote is smaller, the buttons are tiny, and not so intuitive. For example, to get to a DVD menu, you have to push the "DVD" button. To fast forward or review, you hold down the chapter advance buttons (| < < and >>|). So, if you don't hold it down long enough, you end up advancing an entire chapter. Why couldn't there be separate buttons like every other DVD player?
Annoyances with the remotes aside, it's a great system. So, I recommend it to anyone who's patient enough to learn how to use the remotes.

4 out of 5 stars Good Value.......2007-01-21

I purchased this unit about a week ago at a local Walmart for $348. So far it seems to be a really nice unit for the money. DVD movies sound great as well as music. Recording to the HDD is easy and picture quality is very good. I have not tried recrding to a DVD disc yet.The 3 hour buffer is nice and you can set it to not clear when you change channels if desired. A couple of minor gripes:

When using the buffer, you cannot fast fwd or rewind continously as you can with a TIVO. You can press the arrow buttons to move back 10 seconds or 30 fwd, or you can press the chapter buttons to go back and forth 5 min at a time.
***update** You CAN ffwd or rewd by pressing and holding the chapter buttons

There is a seperate remote for the dvd & home theater units. It appears you always need both. ALthough the home theater remote has buttons to control a dvd I have not found a way to get the dvd to respond to it. Also, I have not found a way to control at least the volume of my Sony TV with either remote.

Overall it appears to be a very good value

Amazon.com Product Description

Small size does matter--especially when you're trying to keep your entertainment center from taking over the living room. Philips helps keep it tamed with the slim-profile DVD622/37 multi-format DVD player, which measures just 2 inches high. It provides compatibility with a wide variety of disc formats and digital files, including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW, MP3, and JPEG (Picture CD).

Its 192 KHz sampling enables you to have an accurate representation of the original sound curves. Together with a 24-bit resolution, more information is captured from the original analogue sound wave form, giving a much richer audio reproduction. Other features include PAL/NTSC playback, JPEG photo slideshows (with zoom and rotate functionality), Dolby Digital decoding, and tri-lingual menu display (English, French, Spanish). It offers the following video and audio connections:

1 out of 5 stars No Sound.......2007-06-19

Had this DVD player for a year and watched about 5 movies a month when the audio outputs stopped delivering sound. Phillips used to make great equipment, this DVD player is junk. Save yourself some money and buy the "El Cheapo" DVD player for $30.00. The cheapies last longer and they're made in the same place as the high end models with the same materials and lack of quality.

4 out of 5 stars Great price. Great entry-level DVD player.......2007-05-17

I have to admit I am impressed by the negative comments I have read about this product. Yuo all must have received a defective unit or just got unlucky with it. I got this DVD at JC Penney on sale for $29.95 in August 2006 because I needed a new cheap DVD player with progressive scan. Then I come to find out that this DVD player has both NTSC and PAL which is great for me that I watch movies from Italy. I already had one Sampo DVD region free to dothis but I searched online to see if I could unlock this Philips. Found it. After pressing 8 buttons this cheap DVd player plays anything I feed him with. It does play PC recorded DVDs too. Its menu is easy to use and so its remote. The progressive scan picture looks great on my 50" Panasonic plasma. And all for $29.95.

1 out of 5 stars Worst dvd player ever!!!!.......2007-03-09

I have owned this dvd player for less than a year, worked fine everytime. then all of the sudden played a dvd worked fine, put in another one and said bad disk. tried about 10 different dvds over the course of 3 days, one dvd worked for about 10 minutes and then time after time bad disk. well have you ever seen the copy machine scene in office space..... thats what happened to this pos.

5 out of 5 stars Good basic dvd player for a good price.........2006-12-30

I bought this player 6-8 months ago, and have had no problems with it. I have a Netflix subscription and a 3 year old, so it gets used every day. It's a great little player for the money.

1 out of 5 stars Nice price. Poor product. Poor customer service........2006-12-03

12 months after I bought this DVD player it stopped working; it randomly stops and resets itself every 5 to 10 minutes.
I called Philips technical support and after navigating their support phone line for half an hour and speaking to an agent for five minutes they told me that because it is out of warranty and this model is no longer covered by their 'Out of Warranty Reduced Cost Exchange' program, all I can do is go to their website and buy a new model. I asked if I could troubleshoot it and was told that they no longer support this product.
I'll be staying away from Philips products from now on; budget or high-end.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful little player.......2007-06-26

I am so glad that I purchased this DVD player. We have used it to entertain my children on long trips and I use it several times per week at the gym. It is a well-made little player with a conveniently compact size. My favorite feature is the Subtitle function because I find it much easier to watch a movie where the dialogue is printed than to try to hear it in a loud environment like an airplane or a gym. The one criticism I have of the player is that the maximum volume isn't loud enough, but fortunately the Subtitle feature takes care of that for me. And my children have never complained so it must be sufficiently loud for them when they are wearing the ear plugs. For the price, I doubt you could find a better player.

4 out of 5 stars Above Average Product Overall - Average Audio/Volume levels.......2007-03-22

I tried out my new PET320 and was fairly satisfied with the quality and finish of the product. I played one of each, a DVD, a VCD, an Audio CD and a mp3 CD, and to my surprise the DVD and Audio CD gave out a relatively lower volume output at MAX volume than the VCD and mp3 CD. But fair to say that the volume levels are enough to enjoy a movie from a distance of 2-3 feet, which would be your normal viewing distance for this 3.5" screen. The audio seemed to sound more crisp while using the Rock equalizer settings rather than the Default. One thing that I did not test though is the volume levels when you have some disturbance around, and I think that it might need a lot to be desired in that area. The picture quality is good and the player has a very rugged and compact look, and it would be fairly safe to say that the disc mechanism would be reliable owing to the Philips brand name. You get what you are paying for and more, since a lot of stuff is bundled together in the package including car kit, pouch, AV cable and earphones among other things. It would have been great if Philips threw in a small remote in that price, but maybe in future models. The retractable stand could be annoying in the beginning, but once you get the hang of how much force you need to apply it just works fine for what it is made for. I connected this to my TV and the picture quality was perfect, only thing that the volume won't increase much beyond a certain point even if I crank up the TV volume. Ideal for places where you cannot carry your TV with you, and still need DVD entertainment.

1 out of 5 stars Keep looking...unless you want a disposable DVD player........2003-09-06

I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who has had problems with this machine. It worked great for months (but much less than a year) then suddenly it would no longer play discs. I took the cover off to see if there was anything I could possibly fix and a piece had totally come loose, the main part responsible for spinning the disc. Needless to say it was beyond my help. It's dumpster material now. Please don't waste your money, too.

1 out of 5 stars Disposable DVD player-.......2002-11-25

This dvd player worked fine for about 7 months starting last January, and then started to exhibit a small amount of occasional skipping, and would freeze up every so often. Player would become frighteningly hot during/after playing a movie. It is now fully non-functional, a movie will skip constantly- there is no point to even try to play one. All of the reviews are true, this machine is an honest LEMON. Amazon.com needs to add a no-star rating, one star was far too generous.

1 out of 5 stars horrible!.......2002-10-02

Skips/Freezes on disks. Just when you get into a movie it will freeze/skip so horribly that you cannont continue watching. We didn't discover this until after the 6 month warranty ran out and Philips' solution was for us to pay ...for them to replace it with the same defective model. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

2 out of 5 stars Great at first, but now...?.......2002-09-20

This machine ran fine for a while then we started having problems with it skipping repeatedly and freezing. You can't get the disk out when it has frozen...you have to wait for it to finish "thinking" and that is so annoying! Some days, it works fine, then a rash of skipping and freezing again. Plus, it tends to overheat..the disks would come out very, very warm. Right now, it plays the disk, but there is no sound, so the kids are having to watch their movies on the computer DVD-rom. I think my husband would agree, this player doesn't hold up at all.

2 out of 5 stars Don't even bother.............2002-08-31

I just was recently given this DVD player as a christmas gift. The DVD player worked perfict with great video and stereo sound when I got it, and only skipped on a few DVD's. Then in augest the DVD player just suddenly decided it didn't want to turn on anymore, and now I'm stuck with a broken DVD player. I tried to replace the fuse in the player but it still didn't want to turn on, and when I tried to contact Magnavox support, they had nothing on this issue. In my opinion, this player isn't worth your time.

This is the second DVD580M player I own. This little machine plays formats that my $500 Sony didn't and it fits almost anywhere. Easy to use and plays a great picture. For the price, you can't beat it!!

1 out of 5 stars Started out great but..........2006-10-28

Less than two months after receiving my new PHILLIPS DVD player, it is now sitting in my TRASH CAN! The PHILLIPS DVD player refused to eject the dvd, saying there was no disc inside. I called the 1-800 HELP number (YA RIGHT!) which came with my PHILLIPS DVD player for assistance and received NONE other than to offer to tell me where I could go to have my less than 2 month old PHILLIPS DVD player repaired at MY OWN COST! In my opinion, this shows that PHILLIPS does NOT stand behind their products, and this PHILLIPS DVD player was a piece of JUNK! I guess you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome DVD Player! Great Image & Sound with Composite Link!.......2006-05-06

I previously owned the Coby DVD-224 Compact DVD Player, and for some reason the Progressive Scan outputs on the Coby was not working with my HDTV Flat Panel LCD. So I needed something similar in size with Progressive Scan capabilities. Sadly, most high end Progressive Scan DVD players are large, flat and wide, and also extremely expensive.

I saw this one online for only $47.99 and spent some time deciding between this and the Memorex MVD2030 Vertical Progressive-Scan DVD Player ($79.99). I decided on this one since it was cheaper and I wanted something simple and easy.
After a week of use this Philips DVD580M Lifestyle DVD Player really impressed me. The sound and image outputs are very crisp, clean and smooth thanks to the progressive scan output. The controls and outputs are numerous and useful.
There is a full interactive menu for the player itself that enables the owner to adjust and tweak just about everything from channel output (sound), to color/video output schemes.
I thought the menu were a little too much above simplicity for my tastes (most users will only select the best sound and visual output once and never go back to these controls again).
The Remote Control was also tactile and easy to use compared to sony remotes. My only complaint was that the remote is almost as big as the player itself. And the remote has an extra 3 inches at the bottom with controls for what seems to be some other "phillips" devices and a Multichannel audio surround sound reciever. Unless you have an appropriate Phillips brand receiver/theater system the controls don't work. Also the extra outputs don't seem to work for anything other than phillips branded receievers. I tried to hook up to my Sony theater box and there was no resulting sound, I also tried my Altec Lansing Computer surround sound/sub woofer system and got the samething.

So unless you have a phillips brand or high end multi channel receiver the result is that you'll have a larger remote with extra buttons that do nothing and extra sound outputs on the back of the player that also do nothing. At any rate the normal L and R outputs provided really great sound thru my Samsung Flat panel LCD speakers, then again my TV already has really good speakers.
The player also the ability to play music DVD-Rs, CDs and CD-Rs as well as MP3s. You can also view JPEG picture files that are saved on a CD-R/CD-RW on your TV thru the player. It also creates a slideshow for presenting vacation photos, etc...

Finally my favorite feature is the way DVDs and CDs load & eject thru the slotted opening on the glass front. It is very cool-looking and easy to do, you'll wonder why DVD makers still make clumsly DVD trays instead of these smoothly functioning slots.

The player also came with a solid steel stand and like the player itself everything is built with really great craftmanship and quality (ABSOLUTELY no cheap plastics are used here). This is evident in the weight of the player. It's not heavy, but when you pick it up the firm wieght makes you know it's expensive and built with the best of materials.

I would recommend this product, but probably can't because I believe I may have bought the last one for sale anywhere at the moment. But if you see this player for sale get it and you will be very happy.

1 out of 5 stars NEVER BUY PHILIPS!!!.......2006-09-01

If you're thinking about buying a Philips, THINK AGAIN!! Their products are absolutely TERRIBLE, and their customer service and policies are even WORSE. I can relate to the other customers and their reviews. I am currently on my THIRD DVD-recorder because they just keep breaking down without warning. The last one I had broke after just SIX WEEKS. And God help you if you try to call their customer service center! All they tell you to do is spend YOUR money to ship back THEIR faulty products. They refuse to do anything the least bit helpful, claiming it's "Not their policy". Not their policy to satisfy their customers?! Apparently not, because I am FAR from satisfied.

PLEASE reconsider buying anything by Philips! Or if you DO make that fatal mistake, do yourself a favor and return the product to the store, get your cash back, and buy something reliable like a Sony or Panasonic. Trust me---you'll be glad you did!!

3 out of 5 stars Rated 3 stars because there's always hope with firmware upgrades.......2006-07-11

The following are my issues with the DVDR3355:

Sometimes a recording on DVD-R media did not allow Fast Foward or Rewind. There was a similar issue that a firmware upgrade was meant to resolve: Before the upgrade all finalized DVD-R could not be FF on the device but would be perfect on another player. Now it became erratic: sometimes it's possible to FF sometimes it's not (even on other DVD players), which is frustrating.

When the EDIT menu is poped-up I cannot FF or FRW because the remote buttons to do that are the same to navigate the menu system. It's a pain trying to find the index picture if you've missed it because you can't go back without exiting the Edit menu, which brings another issue:

Exiting the EDIT menu always makes the device to UPDATE the disk, regardless if you did any actual edit or not. This is such a simple software issue to resolve that I can't believe philips did not make it into a firmware upgrade yet.

I can't change the video aspect unless there is no disc on tray or tray is open. I can't accept that an expensive device like this one does not let me change the display aspect "on the fly" like any (unexpensive) other DVD player around (including DVD players from philips)

My brother owns another DVDR3355. He lost unique, very important recordings (the 2006 world cup final for instance) that took 2 hours recording because the UPDATE of the disk failed after the STOP was pressed. His device also did not seems to be able to record successfully on DVR-RW media from philips (and perhaps any other brand). My own device do not have this problems tough.

There seems to be impossible to RECORD in 16:9 aspect (widescreen). I own a Widescreen digital camera (Panasonic PV-GS59) but I've found no way to record on my DVDR3355 in widescreen using the front CVBS inputs (I did not tried the other inputs nor the MiniDV input - firewire - because I did not own a DV cable yet - and yes, I made sure the camera was outputing int 16:9 before you ask :-) ).

Many operations are DAMN TOO SLOW. Ejecting a DVD can take up to 30 seconds. Boot up can take this or much longer (up to 1 min). If I tried to Eject just after powering on, the device seems to freeze. If I operate too fast the remote, the device sometimes seems to freeze for up to 1 min (one time even requiring me to click the power button on the device because the remote wasn't responding).

I think the firmware of this unit and it's menu system to be pretty much in beta stage and still too much stupid. Overall I liked the unit because I really wasn't expecting too much from it, but I was TOO MUCH disapointed by the firmware and Menu/Operation. I was very satisfied with my previous philips players and found them simple to use, but this DVDR3355 usage is cumbersome. I also thought that this device would be full of new features because it was such a modern concept, but instead it was a rather primitive DVD player compared to more "ancient" pure DVD players. This device is really a recording one and do not replace your (old) top-notch DVD player / Home Theater system.

If it was not for the menu and firmware I would rate it 4 out of 5, which means that a future firmware upgrade could make me this happy. Today, with the menu and firmware issues I will rate it 2.5 out of 10. Since I did never own any other DVD recorder to date (not counting PC based ones) I can't be sure if there is a DVD recorder that is better than this unit today.

4 out of 5 stars Good recorder for the price.......2006-04-06

I don't see what the problem is. I've had this model for a few months now and have had no unexpected problems. It does play both -R and +R discs perfectly, and easily records to anything but DVD-RAM. If you've been experiencing playback problems, then the issue is most likely with the write on the disc itself. On the downside, and like most every set-top DVD recorder, the recorded discs probably won't play in other machines without reauthoring. And, the remote control is lacking features commonly found on others. But, overall this is a fantastic recorder for the price.

1 out of 5 stars Why make DVD recorders when you can't make them right?.......2006-03-22

I made the fatal error to buy a philips recorder last year. it started screwing up after 7 (!) recordings so I took it back. It did the same after 20 recordings and I took it to be serviced for a second time. When I got it back it wouldn't even read the disc!!! I had to yell at them to get a replacement and I got the 3355 model today! It did exactly the same thing that user Brad Smith described and YES it is a really frustrating experience. Avoid Philips products or at least their DVD recorders!!!

1 out of 5 stars Turns on randomly when timer is programmed!.......2006-02-03

First DVD recorder I have owned. Bought it for Christmas. Easy to install and set up. But, when I programmed it to record a future show and put it in stand-by mode (per Philips' instructions)the damn thing would come on at random times and stay on. I had it all of two weeks and called Philips. They said "it's not supposed to do that." I had to pay to ship it back to Arkansas for repair, where they kept it for two weeks and did NOT notify me when they were shipping it back. Got it back and guess what? They didn't do a damn thing to it! Still the same problem. Called Philips and asked why they didn't fix it. (Even the gal I talked to in their Phillipines call center knew why I sent it in for repair.) Even included a letter re-stating the malfunction. No matter. They didn't do a damn thing.
Went up the chain of command with Philips but they wouldn't budge. They want me to send it BACK AGAIN so they can have another chance to fix it! I told the gal in Canada that I couldn't possibly be the only one with this problem and now that has been confirmed. It's going back to my home theater guy tomorrow and he can use it as a boat anchor. I'm getting a SONY and will NEVER buy a Philips product again!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice system at a great price.......2007-09-24

I'd been looking for an affordable DVR for some time, but it's so hard to find one with a good sized hard drive that doesn't require Tivo. This one fit the bill. Video quality is great even at LP mode, so you get about 100 hours of recording on the hard drive. (I haven't tried other speeds as I've been happy with the LP). Operation is pretty straight-forward, though I sometimes forget how to do certain things...user manual is clear, though. I haven't yet tried recording to DVD, but am very happy with the hard disk recording. Once you've recorded shows there and are ready to view them, you can see a list of what you recorded as little thumbnail videos that actually start playing in their little thumbnail screen when selected. Basically, it's a live preview - very cool! Also, you can very quickly fast-forward through commercials by skipping over time increments (yea!) and can pause live tv, etc.

My gripes are pretty small - the LCD is on the smallish side, so hard to read from across the room. There doesn't seem to be a way to speed up the changing of time when setting recordings...ie, if you hold the up/down button long enough, time should go by 10-sec. intervals instead of 1-sec. Unlike my previous VCR, if you set the recording for a time and that time hits before you finish setting, it won't start recording. But, I think most recorders are like that.

One word of caution - if you've got an older TV with just a cable input, you'll need either another VCR or Cable box or some type of unit with other video/audio hook-ups. You can't just plug your cable into the DVR and from the DVR into the TV and have a go at it. Luckily, we still have our old VCR on hand, so plugged the cable into that and from there into the TV and used composite video/audio from the VCR to the DVR. With the right settings, it's a go. (One of these days I will get a digital TV with HDMI!).

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase - pretty user-friendly, good quality recordings, good price and worked right out of the box.

3 out of 5 stars User Hostile.......2007-09-22

While the picture quality is good, and everything seems to work okay, and the price is right, actual usage leaves much to be desired. Let's say you just recorded the highlights of your favorite sports event onto the hard drive, and you ended up with 20 "titles", that is, 20 separate clips, and you want to burn them to DVD. The good news is that you can edit each clip, split each one up and delete the stuff you don't like. But each time you do it you have created a new clip. Now you have, say, 30 clips. There is no way to combine them. Why does it matter? Because now that you are ready to burn to DVD, you have to create an "add" list, which means clicking on "add", then scrolling through each and every clip to find the one you want, and then starting at the beginning for the next clip, until you have the list complete. This is a very slow and unnecessarily cumbersome process. They do have a way to batch delete unwanted titles, where you just go through and mark them as you go. They should have done this for the burning menu, because the way you have to do it takes forever. Now that you are ready to burn, pray to God that it allows you to select the high speed option (sometimes it doesn't), because as slow as the high speed option is (quite slow), the other options take FOREVER, and of course leave the unit useless in the meantime.
You can also dub from DVD to the hard drive. This also takes forever, in fact it is done in real time, it simply plays back the DVD and copies it to the HD. Now, my computer can copy a two hour DVD movie in less than 15 minutes, so why should it take so long? If it were not for the eternity it takes to go from HD to DVD or vice versa, I'd give this unit 5 stars. Very poorly laid out and S-L-O-W.
Another annoying thing is that when you record from TV to DVD and stop your recording, the unit writes to DVD (again slow) and then automatically switches to the DVD menu, interrupting your show, forcing you to hit stop to get your picture back. I haven't found a way to disable that one. Also, on the other DVD recorders I've used, LP is 4 hour mode. Here it is 3 hour mode. There is a 4 hour mode, called SLP. Disappointing that this thing is so slow and hard to use.

4 out of 5 stars Initial usage of the Philips DVCR Opinion.......2007-09-17

The installation was relatively straight forward if you have a HDMI ready TV. We do not have cable-TV. However, the digital signal received through the DVCR is exceptionally consistent than with just our TV by itself. That's a big plus for us. Also the 160GB hard disk recording is a very useful "tool" for me to do recording of digital photos and TV programs.
One minor inconvenient is now I have to have several remote devices in order to perform some of the recording and playback. Otherwise, we are very happy with this unit.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD recorder with HDD.......2007-09-16

Works great. Lots of features. Recorded DVDs look identical to my original digital satellite picture. Quality of recording at 1h, 2h, 2.5h all good. 3h still OK. I've recorded over 200hrs on it and working well. Has all the options I need. Easy to use.

There are a few reported firmware quirks according some enthusiasts at website AVS forum, primarily have to do with the digital tuner and title divide function, but they haven't limited my use of the machine.

Overall, very happy with the unit

3 out of 5 stars Philips seems to take 2 steps forward than 2 steps back........2007-09-13

I have previously owned a Philips HDRW 720/17 and a Philips DVDR3455H/37. Philips seems to advance in development of some features (HDMI and HD tuner) but goes backwards on others. The HDRW 720/17 had a build in TV guide and had title and summery info of all recordings (just like my Comcast and TIVO DVR). The DVDR3455H/37 took the TV guide feature away but allowed the user to input a short title for a recording while programming a timer event (Very helpful to find the right shows especially if you do 10 to 20 weekly recordings).
Yesterday I received my new DVDR3575H/37. You can't give any timer event a name until after it's done recording. I am wondering if the design engineers at Philips actually use their own products. Taking the ability to title shows away from the user is a huge step backwards in my eyes. Does Philips expect the user to sit down every day (or week), go thru the recorded shows and title them after the fact? What a waste of time. Why would any designer take such an important feature away? Also while the HD tuner is a nice feature (FCC making it mandatory that all manufacturers as of July 1, 2007 must have ATSC DTV tuner (VCR, DVD player/recorder, DVR)) one must wonder why we can not record in HD (my Comcast DVR records in HD).
This is my take on other DVR's out there:
3 stars total for TIVO; 5 stars for features on TIVO but deduct 2 stars for the fees (Big upfront cost for HD box, I will not get one again until they lower the monthly fees substantially)
4 stars total for Scientific Atlanta 8300HD (Comcast); 3 stars for the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR features, + 1 star for no upfront cost but a monthly fee, for the fee you get the name and summery of every show including a weeklong TV guide and HD recording.
3 stars total for the Philips DVDR3575H/37; 3 stars for the features on the DVDR3575H/37, +1 star for low upfront cost and no monthly fee, -1 star no titles and no TV guide, -1 star no HD recording, +1 star for DVD recorder).
The bottom line is that if you do not want to pay a monthly fee, do not want to record HD programming, do not record to many programs or do not mind spending the time to rename the title after recording and you do want the ability to move your shows to DVD, than this DVR is for you.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars good features, poor function.......2007-08-23

I tried two of these players, and they both had the same problem. It's very slow to act on navigation commands, like skip chapter, FFWD, etc. It got annoying having to wait for literally 5-10 seconds every time you wanted to go to a different spot on the disc. Other than that, the features are good. It records on both DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW, and the editing capabilities are nice. But I opted for a recorder that is also a good player, so I got the Samsung DVD-AR650. Both are at Wal-Mart, which means a good price, cheap extended service/replacement plan, and 3 months to return it. The Samsung only records on DVD-R/RW, so you have to finalize the disc before playing it on another player, but the menus and front panel display are much nicer than the Philips, and it plays discs without a hitch.

2 out of 5 stars Does not hold preset info.......2007-08-06

I was very glad to find what seemed to be a reasonably priced OTA digital tuner with a DVD recorder.
When it works, it works fine. BUT. . .
It does not always hold your timer recording info.
The firmware (dated 6/22/07) at the Philips site was already on the unit I have. It took forever (felt I had won a video game) to finally access the info about my machine to see that the firmware "fix" was already in and there was no fix.
I will live with it, but will check the recorder before each recording :(.

5 out of 5 stars Upscaling recorder with tuner - Perfect!.......2007-06-28

The picture is wonderful. The features are terrific. The ease of use is astounding. FYI - I'm a James Bond fan and own a few titles. One of the movie channels had a Bond-a-thon a few days ago, so I decided to put my Philips DVD recorder to the test. I recorded one of the titles that I already own from the movie channel broadcast to my DVR. The next day, I recorded the movie from my DVR to a DVD. I then had my family watch the first 10 minutes from each movie on one of our other DVD players and, based upon picture, sound quality, etc., tell me which one they thought was the store bought version and which one was the recorded version. My wife and all three kids picked my recording over the store bought version of the movie. Truly remarkable. The primary reason that I bought the recorder is to build upon our DVD collection without having to fork over the big $ to buy the movies from the store (the HDMI connection and upconverting were icing on the cake). At $180 for the recorder and about $1 per blank DVD disc, the thing is going to pay for itself with 10 recordings and then it's all gravy from there. Also, I travel a lot and have about 80 hours of programming on my DVR that I never seem to have enough time to watch. Now I'll be able to burn those programs to a DVD and watch them on my laptop when I'm on the road! How awesome is that?!?!?!

Five stars for the Philips DVD recorder - no doubt. I had tried a few other DVD recorders before I found this one (including a tunerless Philips) - for most, I had paid more and received less. For those of you with complex audio/video setups, beware of DVD recorders that don't have a built in tuner. I don't need the tuner for OTA broadcasts, I need it to make my A/V life hassle free. I'm sure glad that I found this baby...

4 out of 5 stars Phillips "Best Picture" Award.......2007-05-25

The Phillips DVDR3505/37 has the best "digital tuner" picture quality out of the two other DVD recorders that I have tested with "digital tuners" (Panasonic and Samsung). The Phillips DVDR3505 produces an amazingly clear OTA digital picture on my old 27 inch Sanyo analog "box" TV using an indoor antenna. The Phillips 3505 and the 27inch TV are connected with regular "composite cables". The resulting OTA digital picture is amazingly detailed and clear with little or no annoying "dot crawl". Another important feature for me in selecting the Phillips DVDR3505 is that it allows you to choose "4.3 pan & Scan" to view OTA digital programs in full screen on a "box" TV (no black bars caused by "HD" OTA programs). In the 4.3 pan & scan mode the OTA digital picture is shown in full screen but is not distorted looking (no long and stretched faces) and the picture framing matches the full screen picture seen on my analog OTA TV in a side by side comparison. In addition the picture clarity/sharpness in the "4.3 pan & scan" full screen mode is superb! The same effect should be achieved when watching a purchased or rented "widescreen" DVD movie on your "Box" TV in the 4.3 pan & scan mode. The cons for the Phillips DVDR3505 are its slow channel change and slow recording set up. One additional problem I have experienced is that the unit looses its channel set up under certian conditions. At this point in my life, the quality of the picture that you see from your cable, Sat, or OTA programs is what is most important to me and my family when watching TV. The truth is that I have put up with poor reception using analog TV with "rabbit ears" antennas long enough, so the amazing picture quality of the Phillips is what sold me. The Phillips DVDR3502 wins hand down in that category and is the main reason that I sent the other more expensive feature rich DVD recorders back to the store. My family and I have been able to work around or forgive all of the "cons" reported about for the Phillips DVDR3505 and because we are basic users the Phillips meets our needs for recording OTA TV programs while providing a "Wow factor" in picture clarity when watching "real time" OTA digital TV through our analog "box" TV. Also, a "Wow factor" is achieved even when watching OTA digital program recorded on DVD using the Phillips DVDR3505. Image reproduction is excellent in two highest image recording modes. Before buying see if the features on the Phillips DVDR3505/37 matches your basic needs. If viewing pleasure has been lacking for OTA broadcasts then get ready to receive the "Best Picture" award from friends and family when using the Phillips DVDR3505.
