Product Description

Philips DVP5140 Progressive Scan DVD Player, can play CD-R/W, DivX, DVD, DVD+R/W, DVD-R/W DVD-Video, MP3, MPEG4, Picture CDs, VCD, and SVCD. That's right, all of this in one small package for an incredibly reasonable price. All while delivering quality picture and audio performance. Component video output lets you connect this DVD player to your high-end home television set to optimize viewing quality.

From the Manufacturer

192KHz sampling enables you to have an accurate representation of the original sound curves. Together with a 24-bit resolution, more information is captured from the original analogue sound wave form, giving a much richer audio reproduction.

Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and listening pleasure.

12-bit Video DAC is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.

The attractive enclosure has a very low profile.

DivX Ultra combines DivX playback with great features like integrated subtitles, multiple audio languages, multiple tracks and menus into one convenient file format.

Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and viewing pleasure.

Picture CD is a CD-R or CD-RW disc on which you can store your MP3 and digital pictures. When inserting a Picture CD in the DVD player, a screen menu will pop up, showing your JPEG's and/or MP3 files on the disc. Just select the music and pictures files you wish to enjoy and press play or OK. You can watch your pictures on TV with your music playing simultaneously.

Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

Other standard features include:
  • 192kHz/24-bit audio DAC delivers high-quality audio.
  • 12-bit/ 108Mhz video DAC for sharp image with natural colors.
  • Ultra-slim design.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It really does play all regions!.......2007-09-23

I was looking for a dvd player that would play regions other than Region 1, because I had accidentally purchased some Region 2 DVDs and they wouldn't play on my current DVD player. I checked with a couple of local electronics dealers and they told me I couldn't buy a region free dvd player in the U.S. Wrong!! I looked up DVD players on Amazon and found this great inexpensive Phillips region free DVD player! It may say on the box or in the booklet that it won't play all regions, but, believe me, it does. The trick, if there is one, is going through the dvd set-up menu and selecting what you want it to do. It took me about 20 minutes to hook it up to my tv and then go through the menu and set it up. I am not an electronics wizard, so I really believe anyone can do this. All the connection cords (whatever they're called) are included, so you don't have to run out and buy anything. The picture is really crisp -- much better than my old one. The remote control's buttons are in convenient and logical places (which isn't always true with other dvd players or even tvs). It is easy to use and very affordable. I am totally happy with my purchase and think it is a great bargain for what you get! Also the design is very slim, stylish and light-weight. I love it!

1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware! No s-video connector!.......2007-09-22

What kind of company has the nerve to sell a dvd player in 2007 that doesn't have an s-video plug? Unbelievable!

5 out of 5 stars Great Versatile DVD Player!.......2007-09-19

I bought this DVD player after seeing it in action at a friend's house. I have not been disappointed with my own player. It works great both with my normal DVDs and with data DVDs on which I've burned divx/avi files. My only quibble with it was that it took me a small amount fiddling before I figured out which buttons on the remote functioned as the fast forward and rewind buttons. All in all, I'm very pleased with this DVD player and would recommend it to anyone who has a lot of divx files they'd like to watch on a bigger screen than their computer can provide.

4 out of 5 stars Plays Everything.......2007-09-17

This is good DVD Player. I have used the earlier DVP642 for about a year, but it won't play DivX6. DVP5140 plays DivX6, this player is a wonder it literally plays everything that you throw at it.
I am satisfied with this player. The only flaw i find is the build quality is not as good as the DVP642, it feels a bit vulnerable compared to the DVP642. The DVP642 appeared more robust. The second thing is, it does not have a volume control on the menu.
Other than that this player is good and for the price its a steal deal.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great find!.......2007-09-16

I am so happy with this DVD player that I have recently purchased a second one! Great find for a great price.

Light weight, compact, plays all forms, easy to install and use. I bought it for a friend's birthday and he seems to really enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Simple and Easy to Use.......2007-09-21

This DVD player is a snap to set up and use. Nothing fancy, but has a good picture and easy to use remote. I highly recommend, especially for your children's tv. Very compact and lightweight. Have had no problem playing any dvd's or cd's. I'm a grandma, so if I can use it anybody can.

You can see dvd of any zone and any format, but the menus and functionalities are very basic. The remote control no has button for eject disc. Very basic remote control.

5 out of 5 stars MULTI REGION CODEFREE DVD PLAYER WITH DivX. PLAYS PAL/NTSC DVDS.......2007-09-18

Make it Region free you will not regretted:

I bought two of these and was disappointed to find they were both Region 1 only...until I did this:

1. Make sure there is no disc in the player.
2. Turn power off and on again.
3. Open the tray.
4. On the remote, hit 9879 and then 0. This changes unit to Region 0, meaning it'll play all regions.
5. Hit OK on the remote.
6. The screen will display a massage

5 out of 5 stars Excellent product, good price.......2007-09-17

I like Phillip's products. this DVD is fantastic because put together two machine in one, normal DVD and DiVX format. really i like so much.

5 out of 5 stars Works great, plays any DVDs........2007-09-23

Very happy with this DVD player. Great price too. Unlike other reviewers, I like its lightweight remote control. Plays any DVD's without any problems and picture looks even better with HDMI cable when connected to HDTV!

1 out of 5 stars Worst DVD Player ever !!.......2007-09-21

5 out of 5 stars plays it all.......2007-09-20

The price appeared to be low. And it was!
I'm thrilled with the performance and the cost.
Buy it before the company figures out it can easily sell this thing for
a few times the price.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value.......2007-09-15

This DVD player is very easy to use and the up converting to 1080p on our new 61" Samsung LED HDTV is awesome. Played my old "Independence Day" DVD with the new equipment for the first time and it is really like stepping into the scenes.

3 out of 5 stars Love it, but I've had problems.......2007-09-13

The main reasons I bought this DVD player were the great reviews and the small size (I have it on a dresser in my bedroom and wanted it to blend in). The most important thing to me is the picture quality... and so far, I'm impressed. I would have given this 5 stars if it weren't for the other problems I've had. But I will say this is my first upconverting DVD player and it's connected to my first HDTV. So, anything would probably look better than what I had before.

The problems: Almost every time I stop a movie halfway through to watch later, something isn't right when I resume it. I hit "stop" and it says "the movie will resume at this point." Then I hit power to turn it off. The next day, I hit power to turn it on and it immediately starts playing where I left off... however, almost every movie has had issues when it resumed. 1: The Davinci Code - no audio at all when it resumed. I have my TV connected through HDMI and somehow the setting for HDMI audio switched back to off (no one touched it since I stopped it the night before). 2: Apocalypto - The subtitles went away when I resumed the movie. 3: Blades of Glory - This one was really strange. When I resumed, only the background music played... the voice and effects tracks were missing. Each time I was able to correct the problem by starting the movie from the begining and skipping to the chapter where I left off. But this is still very annoying! I think I have the latest firmware, but I'll check again.

If I never stopped and restarted a movie, I probably wouldn't have ever had this issue and would have given this DVD player 5 stars. But with 2 small kids and a new puppy that has to go outside regularly, it's rare I can sit through a 2 or 3 hour movie non-stop.

4 out of 5 stars Has to be hacked to play multi region dvds.......2007-09-21

I got the player to replace a defective one, hoping to be able to show some dvd's from region 4 Australia that I got for my daughter. After doing some research online, I was able to locate a hack to make it region free. Now it works great and I'm pretty please with it overall. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-21

Very good arrived, good packed and tracking services. the product is good by the price, quality of image however the usb port is 1.0 and the movie's transfering is slowed very slow with time delay. Why don,t put usb 2.0 in port?

4 out of 5 stars Good dvd/divx player........2007-09-18

I'm only rating it good because it doesnt have the toslink (fiber optics) digital out. I think this is a major flaw. I knew it didnt have it and that is the reason i still have my old dvd player along witht he new one. My receiver doesnt have coaxial digital imputs and i love it to much to change it, even after 7 years of use. Other than that, the product is great. i havent found a single .avi file that it cant read. The USB port is just awesome. After i bought it i havent had the need to burn any dvds because i just put the avi files in my flash drive and that's it. It also reads most subtitles files without the need to embed them to the .avi file. The quality of the image is fantastic, but i dont have a HDTV, so i cant comment on the upscaling faculties of the player. The better quality avi files show on the tv with opractically 0 pixelation. Another complain is that some fucntions can only be accessed through the remote. That is never a good thing because remote controls tend to have a shorter life than the units they control.Overall, a gret player. If it wasnt because of the lacking fiber optics digital out i would call it THE PLAYER. Still great!

4 out of 5 stars Great DVD Player for the money.......2007-09-13

This player has great picture quality, and plays just about any Divx file that you can throw at it. The only problem that I have with it is that I needed a 1080p upscaling to go with my TV.

1 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time.......2007-09-11

Two major problems with this device. First it routinely freezes after pausing a DVD, forcing you to unplug the device and restart. Second, after pausing and trying to resume when it doesn't freeze, the device will not resume where you left off, forcing you to fast forward or jump to the chapter closest to where you paused.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just as advertised.......2007-09-23

After comparing numerous dvd players and reading many reviews I choose to purchase the PET1002 mainly for my daughter to use on an upcoming car trip. The picture quality is as advertised, not even comparable to a lot of the cheaper 7 inch models, and screen size is nice. She has watched probably 40 movies on it in the last month - thinks it is hers once we came home and made it into her bedroom. No issues as of yet with playing any movies. The only issue is the volume - in the house it is fine with the volume turned up all the way - but in the car it is not loud enough. Reading about this ahead of time I purchased a set of portable speakers on Amazon at the same time, the Audiosource DB5 speakers, to use in noisy situations. These work awesome and I have since been using them with other devices - better then the computer speakers I had.
Overall, a great buy. My opionion is that you can't get a better portable DVD player for under $200.00.

5 out of 5 stars Do your own research and don't rely on what you read here........2007-09-19

Now that what I said in the title, why do you want to read more?

heheh
No time?
Ya better make time, unless you have money to throw out the window.
Is that a confusing statement and seeing the five (5) star rating on this product?
Maybe..... read more to clear this up a bit.

Amazon won't let me post a detailed review due to space limitations.
So, here it is;

The bottom line of this review is; I tested all players available at Circut City store and I found this unit is better suited for my needs. It may not be for yours, but then again, that's why there are so many models out there.

My best advice;
Go to a store where you can test all of the units offered and see for yourself.
Read opinions as a reference, not as a decision to purchase anything.
If you do, I have a slightly used bridge in New York for sale if interested ;)
Just gimme a call and we'll make a deal.

BTW, Circuit City has the same price as Amazon and no delivery charge or hassle to send it back to the seller.

4 out of 5 stars Happy.......2007-08-20

Excellent DVD player with great color. The volume is on the low side, you'll have trouble hearing if you use on an airplane. Happy though!!!

2 out of 5 stars POOR PERFORMANCE.......2007-08-04

I AM SORRY THAT I BOUGHT THIS PLAYER.
ALTHOUR I WAS READING IN ANOTHER REVIES ABOUT NOISY MECHANISM,I DID NOT EXPECT IT TO BE SO NOISY AND DISTURBING IN A QUIET ROOM.
MAY BE IN THE CAR IT IS NOT NOTICEABLE.
ANOTHER PROBLEM IS THAT IT PRACTICALLY CAN'T PLAY DVD+, SKIPS AND STALLS ALL THE TIME ON ANY DVD+.
QUALITY OD PICTURE AND SOUND ARE GOOD.
WITH A NEW MODEL 1060 I HOPE THAT THEY CORRECTED THESE DEFICIENCIES.
THIS IS A GOOD PLAYER FOR KIDS.

4 out of 5 stars Toddler approved..........2007-07-26

Originally purchased this to keep the toddler quiet during the long flight down from Detroit to the Bahamas, but ended taking it to the restaurants as well as the wedding reception as well. Kept not only our toddler quiet and still, but also my nieces and nephews... and allowed us a peaceful meal. Although the impetus was to entertain the toddler, we knew we would use it as well for bed-time watching so we wanted something high-quality and a usable size screen. Upon seeing the various size screens at the store, the 7-8" ones appeared quite small at arms length so we decided on the >10" which is just as portable (or lack there of) as the 7-8"ers. Although we haven't seen any of these units in person, most reviews seem to indicate the top displays to be from Panasonic, Toshiba, and Philips. Panasonic was substantially more expensive and had a weird, potentially non-compact profile, Toshiba's have SD memory card slots which is ideal for reviewing vacation pix on the plane home. We would have gotten that one except there wasn't sufficient customer reviews to confirm the image/sound quality. The Philips had consistant reviews, which we confirm, that the picture was excellent (0 dead pixel guarantee), built-in speaker sound was too low but headphones is fine as long as the background isn't excessively loud, and the spin-up noise is loud but who cares, it's over in 20 sec and is hardly noticeable during the movie. To our dismay, it did not include any headphones. After reading many reviews the affordable $16 Sony Street Style Headphones (MDR-G42LP) had very good sound and strong base - we also bought a $22 Philips- Reflective Neckband Headphones (HS520), but that wasn't as rich/deep as the Sony. Case is decent and includes a backseat holder. As other stated, battery does stick-out but unless you're walking around with it, no worries about it falling off the back. Toshiba uses battery slice that fits more cleanly with the unit. We really like the Toshiba features, we just wish there were more reviews to alleve any unknowns, but we are very happy with the Philips.

4 out of 5 stars Nice product, my daughter likes it.......2007-09-23

I bought this for my daughter's b-day from Best Buy. The sales guy told me that any MP3 player can be used. I think he is wrong, only IPods work. So this feature is useless to my daughter since she does not have an IPod. But she does like it and she may buy an IPod later.

Philips DCP850/37 8.5" Portable DVD Player with iPod docking
Great Product. Easy to use. I hook-up my 80GB iPod Video to the player.

I Wish Battery Life was Longer.

P.S. I only wished I waited for the new 80GB iPod Classic came out to hook-up to the player.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I expected and more!!.......2007-09-01

This is a great product. It's a really good size for traveling. It's so compact with a large screen. We were looking for a DVD player to bring on the plane for our 1 year old daughter. This is a great size and what a great feature to have the IPOD docking station! We also use it in the car with a case that we bought from Target. I highly recommend this!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent player, a must have for iPod video!.......2007-08-24

This is an amazing portable player that has gotten mixed reviews but I'm here to say that I absolutely love this player. The screen isn't as nice as some of the latest players on the market with high contrast glossy screens, but this screen has good contrast, excellent color, and amazing viewing angles. I can't find much better in the less-than-$200 price range. The screen also swivels 180+ degrees.

The DVD player itself is a little loud as it spins the DVD, but if you use headphones or turn up the built-in speaker volume it isn't a problem. The built-in speakers are fine if you're listening to a movie on your lap, but the sound quality isn't quite good enough to fill a small room like portable surround sound speakers. The player has two headphone jacks so two people can connect headphones to the player at the same time.

The iPod connector is what makes this system really great. You get 4.5-5 hours of battery life while watching iPod videos and the quality is better than the tiny iPod screen. I didn't have any problems using the iPod with this player, but I also use my iPod video with a home entertainment center docking station so I'm familiar with how to adjust the iPod settings. If you don't know how to set the iPod correctly you may have some difficulty using this player for watching iPod videos ... but the user manual explains it if you can't figure it out on your own.

Battery life while watch DVDs is only 2-2.5 hours ... so this system isn't the greatest in terms of battery life for DVDs. Of course, you can always use the included AC adapter or car adapter. Again, the big selling point of this system is that you can dock your iPod video with it so the battery life while watching DVDs isn't that big of a deal.

The remote is good, but it's annoying that the remote docks in the same location as the iPod ... so you can't dock both the iPod and the remote in the player at the same time.

The player also has a built-in card reader for SD and SDHC cards. It's great for viewing your digital camera photos while traveling. The manual also says you can play digital video from the SD card slot, but I haven't tried that yet.

The player also comes with cables to connect the player to a TV, so this is a great solution if you have an iPod Video and want to watch your iPod movies and TV shows on a large TV.

Overall, this is an amazing player and I'm very glad I purchased it from Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Best, And Most Multi-Format Portable DVD Player.......2007-08-07

I had this Philips DCP850/37 Portable DVD Player for over 2 weeks now, and I am very satisfied. I have researched and tried out many portable DVD players at Best Buy and other local stores. This is the best portable DVD player, and I am glad I bought it. I do not have a 80GB IPOD yet, but maybe will buy an IPOD later.
ADVANTAGES:
+ It accepts and plays files on my SanDisk 2GB Ultra II SD Card, and my Kingston 2GB Ultimate SD Card.
+ It plays the raw videos from my JVC GZ-MG255 camcorder, however, first must rename the JVC raw video filename from "(Filename).MOD" to "(Filename.MOD).MPG" or "(Filename).MPG".
+ It plays my home made DVD+R videos.
+ It has remote control.
+ It has AV Input jack, and AV Output jack.
+ It has two earphone jacks.
+ Has built-in battery.
+ Has external manual dial wheel "Brightness" and "Volume" controls.
+ It plays my Divx files.
+ It plays standard MPEG-4 files. But it locks up and pauses when playing my Aiptek DV5100M MPEG-4 files (probably because the Aiptek MPEG-4 files are not "standard" MPEG-4 files. However, after I use Nero 7 to convert the MPEG-4 files to standard MPEG-4 files, it plays good.)
DISADVANTAGES:
(Can not think of any at this time.)

4 out of 5 stars Philips DVP3960 Multiformat Provides Value.......2007-09-05

This product is a very compact and reliable system with the ability to play a wide range of CDs. The set up instructions are provided in enough detail to set up the system but the user needs to have some experience with CD players in order to make the sytem work properly. The DVD player will not play CDs coded for other regions but will play CDs from other countries that are labeled all reagions or that are not coded.

2 out of 5 stars not what you think.......2007-08-13

I just got this and it's going back.
Miss leading on what it plays
I got it for Reg 2 BUT it will only play Reg 1 or a DVD that has Reg ALL (just got off the phone with their support people as it played 2 DVD out of 12 that I tried that were Reg 2.
If all you want it for is to play Reg 1 then it's a great buy with a good picture.

The player is as good as some costing much more. The only negative is that it is slow to "load'.

5 out of 5 stars Great Player.......2007-07-12

Ditto on what the first guy said, Awesome Video and Audio Quality over HDMI, Excellent HD Quality Video, Player makes it fun to re watch old movies just to see what they will look like in HD. The player DOES have an off button, you push where the standby light is and that is the off / on button, it doesn't look like a button but it is. You can OPEN / CLOSE from the remote, you just have to hold in the stop button to open the dvd drive, and play of course to close.

5 out of 5 stars Great buy!.......2007-07-10

This multiformat dvd plays DVDs from any country and also movies from the computer. Very happy with the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased.......2007-09-15

After I finally figured out how to get my home movies on my video iPod, I wanted to be able to share them with friends and family without sharing the earbuds. This is the perfect way to do that. It will be great for travel. I'll be taking this to the coffee shop. I'll be taking it on long airline flights. I'll be using it when I'm sitting next to my grandson and talking about family movies. Great product. Great price.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best iPod Players So Far..........2007-09-02

I can't wait to see how the history books portray this decade; especially the year 2007. There are so many DVD players available this year, that it appears to be overshadowing the Blu-Rays and dvrs! And our family has jumped right into the market! With two teens and 3-4 iPods circulating our household, I would much rather view my 30 gig iPod Video on a portable DVD player than on its 2.5" screen! I'm too young to start squinting!!

Our latest portable DVD player is by far the best -- Philips Portable DVD Player with an iPod docking station. It holds the unit's remote control; and taken out, there is now room for the 30GB or take out a small piece of plastic and the 60GB goes in. Philips put some good ideas into this unit by simply accomodating just two of iPods best players. And still came up with a great portable DVD player with clear, strong sound, a good picture and one of the sturdiest players I've seen to date!

1 out of 5 stars Nice features - quick failure.......2007-08-30

Philips typically makes products that look nice and have great features. The trouble is, they almost never last. My unit lasted six months. I should have paid the extra few bucks for a higher quality player from another company.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Philips DCP750/37 7.......2007-07-15

Overall it works and performs excellent when compared to similar items from a price standpoint and technical features. Battery life is acceptible.
A real good buy.It comes with accessories, too, that you do not need to buy extra.

Amazon.com Product Description

Tap into multimedia fun with Philips' broad-format, high-style, and ultra-slim DVP642 DVD player. The DVP642 is not only a high-end progressive-scan DVD player equipped to offer scintillating images on high-definition and HD-ready TVs, it's a tech-savvy player that spins your MP3- and JPEG-encoded recordable CDs (as well as Kodak's and Fuji's variants of the same) and CDs loaded with MPEG-4 and DivX video (3.11, 4.x, and 5.x files), perfect for viewing Internet-sourced content in your home theater. Want more? The player also converts Region 1/All Region PAL-formatted discs (the video standard in Europe) for viewing on standard NTSC televisions (and vice-versa, if only for video CDs).

The DVP642's progressive-scan functionality allows compatible TVs to display the even and odd numbered lines of an image in a single pass. This minimizes screen flicker, which is easier on your eyes.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVP642 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Playback options include five-disc resume, which lets you pick up where you left off on your five most recently viewed DVDs (not applicable for MP3 or JPEG CDs), disc-lock parental controls, and picture zoom for magnification of select images.

The player will play JPEG images one by one automatically, letting you zoom in, rotate, or flip the picture vertically or horizontally. For MP3 playback, the player offers track time display, album and track selection, and repeat (disc/album/track). The DivX media format is MPEG-4 based video compression that lets you save large files like films, movie trailers, and music videos on recordable media.

Philips' 4x video upsampling offers smoother images even when viewing interlaced (nonprogressive) signals through the player's component-video, S-video, or standard composite-video outputs. SmartPicture provides optimum picture settings for color, brightness, saturation, contrast, sharpness, etc., to enhance your overall viewing experience at all times.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

What's in the Box
DVD-Video player, remote control with batteries, a user's manual, and an analog audio/composite-video interconnect.

3 out of 5 stars If You're Not a Brand [...], This Is for You.......2007-09-10

The Philips DVP642 DivX-Certified Progressive-Scan DVD Player is the perfectly priced DVD-player for those concerned with reliability and price rather than brand. It's a straight-forward player with remote that provides menu access to change aspect from standard to 4.3 to 1.85:1. The remote isn't quite as intuitive as others, and you may need to get used to the fact that the L-R buttons in the center are for FR and FF -- it took some for me so I could comfortably navigate discs without having to look down at the remote to be sure I was scanning a chapter rather than flipping to the next one. Audio and subtitles are controllable from the remote, but it lacks an open/close button -- handy if you want to make it easy for your wife to get up and change the disc for you. One of the best features, of course, is its ability to play any region of disc by simply punching in a code. And at $40, it's perfectly priced to buy a couple of back-up players just in case.

2 out of 5 stars Died after 3 months.......2007-09-09

My husband and I bought this DVD player only 3 months ago. After about a month, every time we put on a Disney video, the DVD would get stuck at the FBI Warning screen. We had to literally unplug the player and plug it back in to get the player to work again. In order to play the Disney movies for my son, we had to go to the scene selection screen, choose the 2nd scene, then hit the rewind to previous screen to start the movie. After 2 months of this pain, the DVD player finally stopped working all together. It can no longer read any DVD disc. I give this DVD player 2 stars, as we did get 3 months use out of it.

1 out of 5 stars not reliable.......2007-09-03

I bought this product in january and in just one month the player started to fail reading DVDs. At the beginning it just happened from time to time, but as the time passed problems appeared more often, until becoming a real lottery and a matter of pure luck whether it played the DVDs or not. Now the player does not read any disk whatsoever. Maybe it is a good player, but it lacks reliability.

5 out of 5 stars Philips DVD Player Rating.......2007-09-03

I am sorry I took so long to respond, but this purchase was a gift for someone else and I have just received feedback that the recipient is very pleased with the player.

Product Description

Sometimes the quest for home surround sound is as ignominious as seeking the holy grail. Where do you place all those speakers? Do you have to reshape the room? Philips engineers have tackled that problem. They've managed to take the output from 5 distinct channel amplifiers and placed them in a single speaker called a Soundbar. Within the soundbar, speakers are angled to provide a realistic audio environment that literally emulates sound as if it's coming from all sides. It's 5.1 surround without the mess! 5 out of 5 stars Right product, right look, for the right room.......2007-08-11

I read about this from CES. I'd say most of the comments are pretty accurate. I installed it in my family room, a pretty big open room, which backs up to the open kitchen- not the ideal room for surround sound. The unit sits on the mantel underneath the Sharp 42" Aquos. First impression was watching Gladiator. Bass was fine- not awesome, but not bad. This is the only minor drawback. But clarity from the main unit, and the simulated surround sound, is absolutely fantastic. The claim of 1080P upconverter does work- great picture from DVD. Sound from CD's/Ipod is great too. Hookup is very easy to TV and to Cable Box (I'd rec both via HDMI connection). The look is stunning- definitely for those who want a modern looking, but not over the top system in the family room. Truthfully, my wife actually likes the look too. Probably not optimal Home-Theater in the basement, but a great addition anywhere else.

1 out of 5 stars Too much trebble. Very disappointed........2007-08-07

Alrighty, hear is the thing. I bought this system not expecting great sound. You get what you pay for, and as long as it was as good as my Ipod speaker, I'd be happy. Well, it wasn't as good. So very tinney. This thing would give me a headache after just a half hour of listening. I sent it back and dropped a boat load of dough on Paradigm speakers, Oppo dvd and an Onkyo receiver. In all fairness, there is no comparing a $2000 system with a 6 hundi. It is just that, my expectations were not high with the $600 Philips, I really wanted to like this damn thing. It is beautiful in appearance, horrible in long term sound. I say long term, because if I heard this thing cranked up at an appliance store, I would be all, wooo whooo. Take it home and try and get through a couple of dvds without covering your ears. Seriously Philips, wtf? Go ahead and buy this thing if you want, then just try and listen to it for 4 hours without feeling ill.

4 out of 5 stars Neat, simple design, great sound.......2007-07-30

Here is my take on the Philips Sound Bar after owning it for a week:

Size and look of the unit is amazing. I did not wall mount to unit, but rather opted for having it sit underneath my TV on the TV stand. The piano black fininsh on the DVD Door and iPod dock complement the piano black finish on my TV. Definately a very stylish and eye catching device.

I have the following hooked up to the Sound Bar:
1. Digital HD Cable Box via digital COAX cable
2. iPod Dock via supplied dock
3. Playstation 3 sound via RCA component cables

Initially i was not that impressed with the bass of the system while playing DVD's, i since found moving the subwoofer further away from the TV, around 2 meters to the side, sorted that issue out.

The upscaling DVD was good. I have a Samsung HD 1080p 52" LCD, and it looked great. The color was sharp, with blacks being black (not gray) and did not notice any blurring on fast action scenes.

The sound from the iPod dock is great, and i really like the fact that you can control the iPod from the unit's remote.

Sound from the PS3 is okay. I wished that there was an optical cable input for the PS3, but this is a minor gripe.

4/5 *'s -> Recommendation is to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Philips AmbiSound.......2007-07-23

I recently purchased this puppy a few weeks ago, and have been waiting to write a review. Normally I wouldn't write this, but seeing as there is only one review available, I felt it necessary for other people seeking a customer POV.

To start off, the box it came in was bigger than me haha. I was really surprised when it arrived and soon was setting it up with my LCD. Setup was fairly simple, and I imagine anyone with a little tech knowledge wont have any problems with this system. There are only a few cords, and the system comes with a wall mount! I decided to go with it because it will be used in a smaller room and I knew a full 5.1 would be a hassle with all the wires running all over the place.

CONS:
1.)I am quite pleased overall with the sound quality of the system but the DVD player it comes with, although it upconverts was not really what I was expecting. I've been using an X-Box 360 for a while and I thought it would be nice to cut out the middle man. This it seems, will not happen, as the 360's picture is noticeably superior. I was told that I just needed to set it up properly.. but days later after fidgeting with the different settings and ONLY using the HDMI cable and HDMI settings, it still was not as good as the 360's, which was a bit sharper and just seemed more High-Def.
2.)The other thing I noticed was a crackle, whenever the system couldn't hit the high notes or there was too much treble for its own good. It is noticeable if you're listening for it but it didn't really bother me all that much and this only happened at a high volumn setting that was probably a bit too loud even for a good action movie.

PROS:
1.)I LOVE the subwoofer that this system comes with. It is just terrific, and really, really compliments the system phenominally. It is quite large and weighs a bit but it has a very deep, thick, solid sound to it.
2.)As I mentioned before, the set up was very simple and the system itself is very easy to use.
3.)The system sounds very good, and looks amazing!

IN CONCLUSION:
If you're looking for a great system that doesn't take up a whole lot of space, looks cool, and will impress the friends, look no further. But if you really want amazing sound quality, definately go with the full 5.1 because although this 'imitates' the 5.1 it is noticeably different. The upconvert is nice but not the best dvd player. For those wondering why there is no HD player or BlueRay player, the reason is because it would probably double its price or at least add a good extra chunk on to it.

Overall, definately a great QUALITY product. Everything is solid, and I am really enjoying it!

4 out of 5 stars Good looking home theater system.......2007-07-04

Best part about this system is the simplicity in term of look and set up. Black finish matches with my black Phillips LCD TV. It comes with a main unit and a loud speaker. So not many things to hook up. It is pretty simple to set up if you plan to just have it sitting on the top of the cabinet. I decided to hang it on the wall, right below my flat LCD TV. It looks just gorgeous.

You can play CD, DVD, and AM/FM radio. It has MP3 line-in, iPOD connector and a beautiful black docking unit, USB connector to play MP3 and photos. Sound quality is pretty good. I mainly use it when I watch TV/DVD or listen to my iPOD. Nothing serious.

I didn't give the five star because it didn't have the high def or blueray. I wish it comes with the HD radio and multi-disk. iPod dock works well. However, dock is a separate unit so it has to be hooked up to the main unit. As a result, it ruins the clean look. IPod docking unit's plug is located on the side so it is difficult to hide wires and connectors. They should have integrated the iPOD docking unit to the main unit or the loud speaker box to maintain the clean look.

All in all, I think price is good and unit works well. If you want the clean look, this is the system.

Update Aug 5, 07: System works great. I am glad I bought it. By the way, don't buy the wall mount kit because it already comes with it. Don't understand, why Amazon wants you to purchase a separate kit????
