Great Player, Easy to use while running, Poor Battery .......2007-07-16
This is a great MP3. I works well when I run. The only downfall is that it runs on 1 AAA battery. I have to replace that battery about every 3 runs. I wish it plugged into the computer or had an adapter like my phone so I didn't go through so many.
In this day and age that is how it should be.
Not all it's cracked up to be..........2006-11-03
This is the third MP3 player i've owned over the past 8 years and they have come a long way. But i bought this one knowing i use them while I run and need something with big capacity and ease of use.
The best thing about this MP3 player is that it is built for use whil ebeing active. The arm band is great and the earphones are adequate. There is a enough space for a handful of albums - enough for even those long marathong training runs.
My biggest problems have been ease of use - including reading the screen while on the go. I have been playing around with it and have just found out how to use the playlist feature. The manual is no help in this department because you have to use windows media player to manage the memory. It would be much better if it had its own program to do this, making it easier to do. - But even more bothersome is the fact that the screen is hard to read while on the go. Because it's mounted on your arm when you are running/walking/biking, it is hard to check the screen on the go because of its placement and contast of the sceen. On the product specs it talked about how it was easy to read - this is not true.
For variety, it would be nice to have a beltclip so you could use it mounted on your waist as well. But this is not included.
Overall, it's a good product with adequate memory. Hopefully the sweat won't short it out too soon and it'll last a while...
Good mp3 player.......2006-04-27
This is a good mp3 player i dont know what the two reviews are so negative about it. It works just like a ipod it organizes your songs just like a ipod. The radio is good too it gets this station in that is always hard to get in. But i only payed 30.00 dollars for it at target so i really cant complain. The only thing i dont like about it is that it has bad battery life. I guess i understand if you played retail for it. It is a good mp3 player but not worth $120.00
philips a dud..........2006-03-16
Recentley bought 2 shoqboxs from diffrent sources one of witch did not work at all the other took a crap on me after downloading music onto it. After returning both and wasting everybodys time decided to stick with ipod... till philips gets its stuff together.
Tech service & Customer Service SUCK.......2005-12-06
I was foolish enough to buy two of these units for my two grand-daughters and both units combined gave less than three hours of service before crapping out. Units were returned two times and have still not been repaired and returned. I received absolutely no satisfaction from Philips customer service and have now bought the girls I-Pod Nanos. I strongly advise people to not purchase these or other Philips products !!!

Great.......2007-06-27
This product worked for me on my walks and run and it's great to take around just to listen
Great service!!.......2007-06-12
Item arrived within a few days (I didn't expected it to arrive that early). Great and very helpful customer service. And most important: amazing price you can't find anywhere else!!!
Pretty Awesome.......2007-06-10
This is a pretty good MP3 player. It's easy to put music on it with Windows Media Player and the battery lasts a long time after the initial charge. It's very sturdy too - I accidently dropped mine on a cement floor and it's totally fine! (It has locked up before but that's easily fixed by pressing the on/off button and up at the same time)
The only problems I have with it are the buttons are a little hard to press and there is no "repeat one song" option.
super price for decent player.......2007-06-09
The sound is great
Over the ear clips on ear buds are nice
The player is disk based and bulky wich I do not mind and the $41 price was to good to pass
This player uses a standard min USB cable so no worries if dog eats the cable ...
The Philips software is needed for the player so it will only run only on XP or giher.
You cannot use this player at all even as USB storage without Phillips software ...
it doesnt work what do i do.......2007-06-08
it loads music but does not play it. The music woould work if not for the sound card it destorts the sound.

Customer Reviews:
Read before you buy.......2004-02-11
My draw to this product was the price. I mean compared to the iPod or the Zen, this thing is cheap... ...but it's got some serious drawbacks...
The drawbacks...
The engineering that went into this is really bad. First off, it's really heavy and bigger than normal CD players. It doesn't even fit into my jacket that has a pocket designed for cd players.
The display doesn't light up, and it's hard to read. It does become an orange color at certain angles, but none of the angles are practical for viewing. No album names, just numbers.
The display on the remote and the main unit is made of cheap, soft plastic... This stuff scratches very very easy. Nike should have packed it with a silk bag. Definitely doesn't fit the description of "sport equipment", more suitably for a Gucci toting softy that wants to be seen, rather than get fit. Why they didn't make it out of glass, I'll never know. I do know that after it gets scratched from simply leaving it your gym bag, you're going to get really choked.
When and if you decide to run with it, you're going to notice how totally annoying it is to change songs/volume, it's strapped to your hand, yet you have to use your other hand to change the input. Now you're going to say, "why don't you use the remote?" Well... the remote is awful... I'm not sure how many people with engineering degrees it's going to take at Philips to figure out that having the headphone jack at one end and the line going to the unit on the other end, IS A BAD IDEA!!! It's totally horrible to set up for a run. You end up totally wrapped up in wires. Wasn't the whole idea of this unit to allow you to run? So picture yourself running down the street with wires all over your body and a big bulky CD player in one hand and a remote magnetized to your chest. To change a song you can either reach up to your chest or reach over to your other hand... where is the logic in this remote???
Speaking of the remote... when you do decide to use it, you'll notice that the volume isn't true. What I mean by this, is that it's just secondary to the main unit. This is really annoying. So if your CD unit is in your backpack and you want to crank the volume on the remote, you have to open your bag and turn up the volume on the main unit and then adjust your remote. These Philips guys have never heard of the KISS princple.
It has a couple of ESP settings, I don't bother using them. You can run and listen to MP3's without any on.
The head unit is noisy. Really noisy. I was in the library listening to tunes with it, and was getting angry looks by people. I couldn't figure out why, when someone finally asked me to please put the main unit in my bag. Everytime this thing loads an MP3 into it's buffer, it makes a loud awful sounds.
The magnets... AWFUL... I'm in the process of getting a couple degrees, one of which is computer science. I was working on an assignment in the lab, and I saved it onto a disk and tossed it into my backpack... ...can you guess what got erased??? The magnets on the remote (in the other part of my backpack) latched onto the disk and toasted it. Just a few hours of wasted work. Philips does put a nice little warning note about magnets and credit cards in the box. How nice of them. A simple clip would work about a MILLION times better!!!
The soft orange rubber coating they put on the front is a really bad idea. The other degree I'm getting is in Visual Arts, and while drawing for a few hours while listening to it, the buttons got covered with graphite. This wouldn't have been a problem except for the fact that it's a real pain in the butt to clean, and in fact it doesn't get clean.
So basically after a week of use my unit has a scratched display (err) and a graphite-grey stained orange front.
But in some fairness, it does it's job. It plays MP3's from CDR's and has a nice long battery life - and thats why I bought it. I am just so suprised at how badly engineered this product is.
Would I buy another product from Nike/Philips? - Not a chance
Stylish but with only short term reliability.......2003-07-09
I bought this walkman early this year, probably JAN/FEB to take running with me. I usually run on a treadmill, but anti-shock is still important, and I was impressed with the eight-minute anti-shock memory. This is the best thing about it - it literally wont skip, even if the CD is slightly scratched and skips on other players. The unit looks nice, and the no-look buttons work well while on the move. The mp3 option also works great, and the sound quality is indistinguishable from CD.
The rubber hand strap is a pain to put on the player, and needs frequent washing otherwise it starts to smell like rancid socks. As usual with these things, the headphones are rubbish; Nike is supplying this type of headphones with all it's sports audio and THEY DO NOT STAY ON, even when you turn your head, they need to start supplying more rugged, expensive headphones with these players. I had to use my old headphones, which worked fine. However, if you've spent $... on this thing, you shouldn't need to go out and spend another $... on headphones.
The remote control unit stopped working months ago, and the magnets on it rust up fairly easily. Yesterday (now early July), the display on the front of the unit started to disappear, and some of it appears backwards.
But, there's been no deterioration in sound quality, or interruption in play due to these faults.
I am probably going to try and return it under guarantee very soon, because when it works, this is a nice walkman. However, they need to bring out a new model with all of these technical and practical issues solved. Soon.
Above Average.......2003-06-25
First of all, there is one word to describe the sound quality..........heh I can't think of any, thats how good it is.
Basically after trading in a previous defective Panasonic CD Player, and seeing as though I have millions of mp3s on discs, I realised an MP3 CD player was what I had needed.
After purchasing this for, wait for it...£100! I was satisfied.
Meaning, there was a lot a "Pro's" to this player, but just one (maybe three) BIG (and I express the word 'big') flaw/downside which balances it out.
Pro's: - Sound Quality
- Functions
- LCD Display
- Remote Control (However there is no need for this,
because after all, this is supposed to
be a "Sports CD Player")
- MP3 Support Function
CON'S: - =BIG...Player= (As soon as I held it in my hand, I thought of one word "BRICK", it was heavy...and as a frequent user of CD Players while walking, I couldn't fit it in any of my...pockets!)
- =Headphones= (I like the concept, but it just isn't
suitable for every head out there! The damn
earplugs are too big, larger than ususal,
and tends to fall out of my ears if i just
tilt my head once!) The Magnets are also a
good idea and are useful in certain
occasions, but are quite heavy, it also
causes the headphones to sag down and come
off seing as though the headphones are
really light)
As a 17-year-old, I don't usually use this for jogging etc. rather for walking, therefore the player being large and heavier than the average cd player is very annoying. However as soon as you turn this thing on, and bust out the hip hop, r&b, rock whatever music you listen to... you forget about all it's negatives, it made me get off my seat and breakdance out on tha street, 4realz!
Great sounding player.......2003-05-04
...The sound was really nice, the volume was not so low. A little lower than my old [one] but I can handle this small difference and it had an equalizer for controlling treble and bass. ... This is really nice.
I agree that the design and the battery life are not so well as [other ones]which have about 80 hours of battery life while this one has 24 hours without ESP. But I guess [other ones are]stealing from sound quality while boosting the battery life. I don't know but I definitely didn't like the sound of [some other]players.
The remote and the magnets are really ingenious. Really easy to use. The device itself is really sound but also a little big. Anyway, it has advantages and disadvantages but the sound is the most important thing for me, and it has a great sound. I recommend this to everyone who listens to these things while walking, running etc. It doesn't skip and sounds great.
this product is not a "sports" cd player.......2003-05-04
I needed a new sports cd player to use while running, so I bought this Philips cd/mp3 player. While I enjoyed the fact that it played mp3s and was relatively inexpensive, I was very disappointed with the product as a whole.
The magnetic parts that attach to your shirt to keep the headphone cord out of the way are very annoying and heavy. When running with this cd player, I felt like I was weighed down. I would rather have the headphone cord flapping around than have heavy magnets hitting against me.
Furthermore, the remote on the headphone cord is completely useless. The cd player comes with a sporty case to make the cd player easy to hold while exercising, but this means that your hand is not free to use the remote - so the remote just bangs against you and weighs you down as you run.
And finally, this cd player ate through batteries and was both heavier and larger than most other cd players on the market.

Very Pleased.......2006-03-23
Recently bought this at WalMart. Did not want to spend a fortune. I really like the controls as I have large hands and I am older so it is really easy to work. I agree with another reviewer that the headphones are difficult, but something that is a personal preference. For the money this was an excellent buy. I also like the fact that it has the FM tuner. I can use it inside my building for work and I get great reception. My children have IPods and they are jealous of my player!!
Perfect for active users - with different earphones.......2006-02-16
Overall, I am remarkably pleased with this player, which I received as a really surprise gift last Christmas. The Windows Media interface is straightforward and preexisting as long as you don't have a Mac, and even a newbie to MP3 like myself will probably have no problem getting up and running well within the initial charge time.
In use, the power-up, music selection, and settings during play are a bit clunky, but as long as you aren't song-hopping, this is a minor complaint.
My only real beef with this thing is the earphones. My personal recommendation to anyone looking at any type of MP3 player is to be prepared to trash the supplied phones and look for almost anything else.
The suppled Philips phones are sonically adequate - when you can keep them in position. But keeping them there is nearly impossible as they tend to slide away from the ear canal. This causes the bass to disappear entirely and now your music sounds like it's being delivered via soup can.
I ponied up for a pair of Shure isolating phones and have been extremely pleased with the results, but find myself still a little bitter about the total package cost after upgrading a component that should be supplied in useable form.
Does exactly what it says on the box, with style and without a fuss.......2006-01-12
I run 10-30 miles each week and like a bit of musical motivation. So far I've burned out two neclace-mounted mp3 players by sweating on them, despite various attempts to protect them. So for my third player I wanted something that could withstand the elements either by being water resistent or arm mounted.
The Phillips manages the elements and has great capacity and style. The included armband is elastic and works well, although I've been putting the player in key pockets which also works very nicely.
It has run with me for 100 miles so far, playing in shuffle mode, and I have never heard it skip. With a few hundred songs it's a little over half full. The radio works great, the headphones are nice and sound good, although I prefer the philips/nike sport model for durability and comfort. The face panel controls allow skiping through songs and adjusting volume easily whilst on the run. And it feels solidly built so I'm not afraid of it getting damaged on the road.
So conclusion, no complaints here and top marks for this great all-around player well suited to athletics.
so far so good.......2005-10-08
I bought this digital audio player 2 weeks ago at Walmart. It's an upgrade to my creative nano plus 1 gb player. When I saw it on display, I was surprised to see a 4gb player with a sportsband and under $200. So I bought it ,and so far have been happy with it. I mostly use it at the gym.
PROS:
DESIGN-- looks great, the rocking face cover acts as a navigation button .feels sturdy and durable, although i've been careful with it and have not dropped it yet.
CAPACITY-- 4 gigs. 2k songs. I've packed in all my cd collection ,and i have 200mb left!
SOUND--- excellent, has preset equalizers -i set it to "rock".the earphones are not too bad. good for working out, they actually stay on.
PRICE--- under $200, well worth it.
sports arm band-- rare but great idea. you don't have to buy it seperately, unlike the other HD players. great for working out although a belt clip could also come in handy.
BRAND-- PHILIPS. usually a great manufacturer of electronics. from experience, their customer service is good, they replaced my cd player which was within warranty, right away.
CONS:
WEIGHT-- after being used to the little flash player i had,at first it felt awkward around my arm. But i quickly got used to it.the armband holds it securely.
NO CONTINUOUS PLAY-- if you listen to one artist/album,and finish it, the player won't go to the next artist/album automatically. you have to do it manually.
no voice recorder/MP3 encoding- this was a nice perk that my flash player had. I miss it.
STOPWATCH: why? i don't see the need for this at all. unless you are really anal about how long you have been running(or sitting down listening to music), this is really a waste, not a perk. could have used the voice recorder/mp3 encoding feature instead.
deleting songs: you have to plug in to your computer to delete the songs you don't want.
BATTERY-- Now, The rechargeable batttery deal is great for now. in the long run though I'm not sure. first off, it's internal. it not removable. The player froze on me 1 time, and , i assumed that i just disconnect the battery to reboot it.but you don't have access to it.if it dies, eventually, how will i replace it PHILIPS?
FM STEREO: Never used it. I tried it to see if it works, but don't need this feature.
Overall, this is a decent player.I recommend it. I love it, but i don't love what it doesn't have. But in life, you can 't always get what you want.

Incompatible with EMI copy-protected CDs.......2004-09-18
I purchased this in New Zealand, and since discovered that EMI copy-protected discs will *not* play at all. CD screen just displays "ooops"!!!
Philips claim that these EMI discs do not adhere to original CD spec and so this is just tough news for me, and I need to take it up with EMI. Never heard anything back from EMI.
Therefore insert copy-protected disc into CD, hold down shift-key, copy your purchased "useless CD" and this Nike Philips CD player will play perfectly!!!
Be warned!

Philips/Nike PSA110 Armband FM Radio.......2007-01-13
This item was a gift so I don't have any specific details about the product. However, I did receive it in a timely manner.
Philips / Nike PSA 110 Armband FM Radio.......2006-01-16
Good reception, easy to operate and comfortable during workout. You will probably want a better set of headphones, and it does not have a rechargeable battery.
Good radio at a great price!.......2006-01-15
What can you say about an miniature radio? The digital tuning is great, the battery life seems good (and it only takes one AAA), and the headphones are so usable and comfortable that my wife has started stealing them for use with her portable. Good buy, and the price was perfect.
decent radio with irritating flaws.......2005-12-15
This radio has several strong points:
-the desplay is easy to read
-controls are easy to operate, located well so it's fairly easy to use them by touch, in a pocket.
-most important to me, reception seems to be quite good.
-reliability has been great for me. I'm an NPR junkie who listens a lot. I've used the previous model for 2 years and this one for 2 months with no problems. (I only bought a new one because I'd misplaced the other one for several weeks)
At this point I'd be at five stars, except:
-"power saver feature", which can't be disabled, shuts the radio off after an hour. If I have it in a pocket, I have to dig it out and turn it on again every hour.
-I agree with others that the earphones are the worst. I threw mine out immediately. I have a friend who thinks they are fine, however.
-Changing the battery: The previous model was very simple and foolproof to pop open. The new design requires unscrewing the back. (If you are using the armband, you must first wrestle it out of the rubber retaining sleeve) It looks very sleek & stylish because the only grip is several tiny protruding rubber bumps. After a few uses, the threads stick slightly on mine and it is a ROYAL PAIN to unscrew. I think I'm going to have to grind a couple of slots on the back in order to have enough purchase to move it. It's all the more annoying for me because it was so easy with the previous model...
No problems so far.......2005-08-06
I haven't had the problems the other reviewers have had.
1. I live in the Philadelphia area that has both hills and strong radio signals. No problem with reception.
2. I wear it when I walk my dog, so I don't have the sweat/moisture problem. Try wearing it over a shirt sleeve to keep the sweat from entering the battery compartment or be a Playa and wear a sweatband just above the radio.
3. The arm band is tricky. I had to call C.S. to figure out the right way to attach the band. Don't thread the band behind the radio like a watchband. Feed one end from underneath the radio through a slit. Double the strap back onto itself so the velco engages. Repeat on the other slit. If you have leg-like arms you may have to get a bigger band, because it tends to act like a tourniquet if you're not careful.
4. The headphones are only slightly uncomfortable when turning and looking side to side. Otherwise they are lightweight and durable.
5. Battery life, so far, has exceeded manufactures estimates.

JUNK.......2007-03-30
Ive owned all of the Philips/Nike mp3 players...not because I need to have the latest and greatest but becuase they kept dying on me. The software was a pain to use (especially since im using itunes now which is VERY EASY).
The only reason I stuck with the player is because I bought the extended warranty from Best Buy (if you buy this player you NEED the warranty) and they would replace it with a newer model.
I made the switch to the ipod nano a year ago and havent looked back. Do yourself a favor and avoid this player like the plague. Phillips and Nike no longer have a partnership due to the poor performance of this player.
New Software Renders Unit Useless.......2006-10-08
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Phillips has changed the operating system so that it relies upon Musicmatch Jukebox for file maintenance. The problem is that the basic Jukebox program and plug in don't work. So, once you upgrade the firmware and software, you are left with a very expensive paperweight. I assume that all is corrected if you pay Musicmatch for an upgrade, but I am unwilling to take the chance for a couple reasons. First, the unit should work fine without forcing me to buy separate software (or they should disclose this fact so a purchaser can figure this into the total purchase price). Second, fool me once. What happens if I upgrade and the thing still does not work. All in all, Nike and Phillips should be very embarrassed. This device worked fine until they screwed around with the software so as to allow people to purchase and download songs.
DO NOT BUY THIS! I never even used it before it "broke"!.......2006-09-19
As a runner, I thought this would be a good purchase. I even took my un-used Ipod back before opening the Ipod because I thought this item would be better -- I was WRONG! During my first run the product fell on the concrete and never turned back on again. Philips would not replace it because they said I "misused" it. Philips demonstrated extremely poor customer service and I found no help when I contacted the seller from Amazon. Don't waste your money on this or any other product from Philips!
Love it!.......2005-12-10
I am quite happy with the purchase of this MP3 player and cannot understand people's problems with the software. To specifically address others' problems (that I can remember):
I am using Windows XP and have absolutely no problem loading songs onto my player, both MP3 and WMA. I also have no problem copying from CDs that I have previously burned as well as commercial CDs that I have bought.
I can drag and drop titles just fine from my files with the software. I have also had no problem assigning my own name to playlists that I create.
I was up and running and loading songs within minutes of installing the software.
It's a great piece of equipment for the price.
Great MP3 player.......2005-11-27
I got this as a gift from my husband. I run on a daily basis and this player has yet to let me down. The battery life is excellent I cant even remember the last time i had to charge it! I love that i have an option to wear it around my arm or around my waist with the belt. I have no complaints if you read the directions and learn how to use the software to transfer the music its easy as pie!

Great for running!.......2006-09-16
From the MP3 players I've used for running, this is definetly my favorite. Arm band works great, & head phones are very comfortable & stay in place while running. Only negative to this MP3 is 128 MB of memory is not enough, beside that I love it!
Great for running.......2006-03-15
I've had mine for about three and a half years. I've had zero problems with it. I just drag and drop the songs using windows explorer.
Compared to an ipod it is a little clunky, you can only go through the songs in order, you can't just play 'random', but it is designed specifically for runners and in this it truly excels. The headphones are by far the best I've ever seen for exercising because they lay across your neck, and then rise up to your ears. You don't have to worry about them falling out.
fairly good product.......2005-09-08
The things I liked: lots of music storage, REALLY easy transferring music files, rechargeable battery is nice, multiple Velcro attachment places on the arm band for smaller arms, different musical settings (eg "rock", "hip-hop")
Things I didn't like: the buttons are WAY too small which makes them hard to find and to press, headphones don't fit well (not the ear pieces- the band that goes around your head).
Overall I like the device but the small buttons are a real problem and in that regard, I preferred the old Nike PS3. Different headphones can be purchased to go with the player so the headphones aren't such an issue. A few cool but mostly useless features it had were that the name of the current song would scroll across the "face" of the device and the face lights up when buttons are pressed. This last feature would be nice for running in the dark except that you're not really in a position to see the outside of your arm when wearing the player.
It was ok in the beginning then broke down.......2005-04-19
I was in the gym and it went on and then off. I then proceeded to try to turn it on and it did not work. I didnt not even try to fix the product b/c I read all of these awful reviews on amazon. I personally just went out and bought and iRiver iFP-890. I read the reviews on amazon and it was quite helpful. Again did not buy anything that is made by Nike Phillips b/c it seems to me it just doesnt work and it is a waste of money.
Not made to last........2005-04-10
It busted after about a year's worth of average use, both the unit and the headphones shortly thereafter. But when it did work, had decent sound.

It's Jordan; expect nothing but excellence........2007-09-01
While I cannot disagree with the reviews of the Jordan Limited Edition MP3 player listed here, my review can only speak great things. I remembered when the Jordan magazine first mentioned the release of the MP3 player, but unlike his shoes, my interest was not there. However, I recently found an article speaking of its praises and I attempted to find it on Ebay. Amazingly, here on Amazon I found one brand-spanking new, never opened, for A WHOLE LOT LESS than the original cost, which I believe was $499. I have been using it for two days now, and while I did have concerns about the advancement of technology(this was released in 2003) and software upgrades, I have no concerns anymore. The packaging lists compatibility with Itunes, MusicMatch and Windows Media, but it immediately synced with WM and downloading music files was quick and easy. I have been able to transfer 52 music files with room for more, and while track 45 will not play, I believe it is because of the track and not the player itself. If you are able to find one, I highly recommend its purchase. It is very stylish and despite its size, it's not hard to get used to. But Jordan allowed for his name to be attached to it, so undoubtedly, my expectations were high. But, they were easily met.
Batteries not included.......2004-04-02
Being an active person, music is a very important part of my life. If you are looking for a decent mp3 player, the philips jordan mp3 player is a safe bet.
One of the quirks i do have about this player is that the rechargeable battery that is included has a life of about 10 minutes. Well not really, but you would apparently think so after using it.
A plus side to this mp3 player is that you can also save word files on this player. Not too bad for the active man on the go.
The equalizer buttons are a bit tough to press at first, but i am sure that this will get better as the mp3 player gets worn in.
All in all i believe this to be a quality product and you get what you pay for with this product.
Great Functional MP3 Player.......2004-03-27
Hello, I decided to get a MP3 player for the gym since I've taken up longer distance running. I consolidated my needs to a list of a few things:
1. I prefer a non-harddrive based MP3 player. While the tradeoff is less music capacity, I have the piece of mind knowing that high impact activities won't damage my investment.
2. A MP3 player that didn't rely on proprietary software (falls under ease of use). I hate RealOne and having experience with removable drives, copying and pasting is a lot easier than having a "middle man" program interfering with something that *should* be very simple.
3. Durability and compact design.
4. FM Tuner and the ability to record wasn't important. I don't like listening to radio stations because commercials have me changing stations, so there's no use for the option. Also, it seems a lot of people complain about the FM tuners on most MP3 players not working too well.
5. MMC card slot wasn't needed. While it's nice for expandability, I think 1 or 2 albums worth of music (192 bitrate) is enough music for a gym session. I'd rather work out than flip through songs.
As far as the player itself and all it comes with, I'll say the pictures of this thing do it no justice at all. The chrome finish is very nice (doesn't seem scratch proof at all though) and it was very impressive looking out of the box, size is perfect, and the headphones work great.
Accessories: I only considered needing an armband, which was provided, but the extras were appreciated. While shopping I was only concerned about player specs and not the accessories, I'll have to say that the including the rechargeable battery and recharger was a really great surprise since it basically cuts down on future costs. Armband works out great, and the PSA comes with a magnetic clip to keep lose headphone cord from dangling around.
Setup: I run Windows 98SE and setup was pretty easy and straight forward. I work well with computers, so I anticipated a problem with Removable USB Storage devices. It isn't really a problem, just a feature that windows 98 didn't have built into it. You go through control panel and do a little setting up. READ THE PDF file that comes on the disk. You shouldn't have any problems if you follow the instructions. The disk installs MusicMatch (you can uninstall later), running the install does install drivers you need for removable storage devices if you're running windows 98. You can always uninstall musicmatch afterwards. I've used it before and it's "OK," it has decent enough CD ripping software which is very user friendly in my opinion. Use of this program is optional and is NOT *needed* to transfer files to the PSA. Once I had everything setup and my battery was charged, I updated the firmware (comes with the software) and started transferring files. Drag and drop, easy.
My cons?
- Opening the battery door on the back is a lil tricky, but once you've got it it's pretty easy. Slide your thumb across the back and it should pop up.
- The headphones don't have any padding on them, so they are kind of hard. But, I guess sweaty pieces of foam on your ear wouldn't feel too good either.
- Also, I think people with larger heads might have a problem with size, I'm 5'11, but I don't think my taller friends would be able to use the headphones that come with the player.
- Output is only 5 mV. With no EQing, volume doesn't get that loud. But if you use the eq, volume isn't an issue. I use a custom setting of +2, +3, +4, +3. Other mp3 players I was looking at had the same output wattage too, so it pretty much on par.
I found all of the things I was looking for in the Jordan PSA. Let me admit that I was initially considering a price point of $ while considering 128 MB mp3 players, but I'm a fan of Jordan, so I spent the extra $ for the 128 MB and the look. (I figured resale value would be a little higher if I ever wanted to sell it in the future).
The main things I liked is the ease of use and it's build quality is top notch. I recommend it if expandability isn't an issue and this isn't your main form of music listening. The mp3 player was built with an intended use in mind, and Philips has definitely held up their end. With that, I'd have to give it 5 stars for getting exactly what I paid for.
Other info: The other players I looked at were the Philips Key Ring KEY005 (you can find it on amazon and ..., but it's discontinued), Rio Cali (software, build quality), Verge 256 (circuit city exclusive, build quality issues), Rio Fuse (software, juggle stick looked flimsy) and the Nike PSA.
