For sensationally great video, the DV-578A-S features virtually twice the video processing power of previous Pioneer models with its 12-bit/108 MHz video digital-to-analog converter (DAC), as well as Pioneer's PureCinema 2:3 Progressive Scan feature, and a range of video output types, plus 7 video adjustments for maximum versatility and performance. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; reverse 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The deck is even outfitted for CPRM copy protection (Content Protection for Recordable Media). CPRM permits the recording of copy-once broadcast programs, but not copying of such recordings. CPRM recordings can only be made using DVD-RW discs in VR mode and can only be played on CPRM-compatible players such as the DV-578A-S.

DVD-Audio and SACD media both offer super-high-fidelity sound. DVD-Audio discs provide high storage capacity, unique bonus materials not available on commercial CDs, and 192 kHz/24-bit multichannel and stereo sound (with audio harmonics conceivably extending all the way to 96 kHz, two full octaves beyond the highest frequencies found on standard CDs). DVD-A discs often have compressed Dolby Digital soundtracks for listening on standard DVD players, but true DVD-A decoding is required for full sonic appreciation.

Depending on the disc, Sony's proprietary SACD format provides extended-bandwidth multichannel and/or stereo sound, often presented in a dual-layer format compatible with both standard CD players (at standard resolution) and SACD-equipped players like the DV-578A-S (for full-resolution playback). Most high-res audio players offer compatibility with one or the other format, DVD-Audio or SACD. This player is happy with both.

As an anti-piracy measure, the player performs its own decoding of both DVD-Audio and SACD signals (not to mention standard Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround sound), passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your integrated amplifier or surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to fully appreciate multichannel DVD-A and SACD releases.

If you're not planning to use the DVD-A/SACD capability for multichannel programming, both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for simpler connection with your receiver.

Other features include picture zoom, parental controls, disc resume, repeat, random play, track programming, dialog enhancement, a GUI disc navigator, a fluorescent display with 3-level dimmer, a screen saver, auto power off, track/time search, and 10-key direct search and play.

Great player...if it worked!.......2006-09-07

I bought this because I wanted an inexpensive player that could play both DVD-A and SACD. There are maybe two or three players that fall in that category. At first, it seemed this player was the answer to my prayers. But then I started having issues with movies just stopping and then skipping entire chapters. Then it started doing it with DVD-A discs. To clarify, I take good care of my equipment and media. I always handle the discs properly and put them back in their case. There is not excessive dust in my house, and I do not smoke. It usually does this with the same discs, which have included brand new movies just being played for the first time.
If I thought the problem would be solved, I would buy the 588A, but I'm afraid to spend $100+ only to have the same issues.
Perhaps I got a lemon with this one, but I have not been thrilled with Pioneer players (my first player would pause at the layer change).
I've read reviews that the Yamaha C750 has better sound and is great for the price, but I've also read about issues with that one as well.
I just wish Panasonic had a player that could do what this Pioneer can do. I've never had a problem with that brand....ever.

Voice stopped working on DVD.......2006-08-27

Nice Universal Player for the price.......2006-05-08

Pretty much everything that could be said about this player has been said in some of the other reviews; however, I noticed some innacuracies. First, the SACD does play in 5.1. I had a bit of confusion playing Michael Jackson's Thriller album. Without reading very carefully, it was difficult to determine that it was a 2.1 mix. This labeling issue can lead a person to believe that the player is faulty when in fact it's the mix of the disc. Some discs have both stereo and surround mixes. This may also have been a cause for confusion. The player does have a setting allowing the user to define to which format the player will default. I felt that was a nice feature given that tastes vary among listeners. It can cause confusion, but that's why we read our instruction manuals :).

With regard to the conversion, there are internal menus that you can set to PCM; however, the true encryption can be set as well.

Overall, I've loved this player for what it is. It's given me access to all the formats that I want. The richness of some of the mixes produced for both SACD and DVDA formats have brought tears to my eyes. Music genres that I otherwise don't enjoy (i.e Jazz) become a moving experience. It moves the listening experience away from hearing music to feeling music. It's unfortunate that these formats did not take off. Most people simply prefer convenience over quality.

My one gripe with the player itself is that it doesn't have any sophisticated channel management or bass control other than the selection of small or large speakers (hence the 4 star rating). For me the channel controls for the 5.1 inputs on my receiver were able to correct this. It took some odd and perhaps aggressive tweaking, but it was time well spent. This player can't be beaten for the price.

Got this model for its SACD/DVD-Audio capabilities. Great sound, great picture. Only wish this was a 5-disc player like the Toshiba it replaced.

The product proved easy to hook up. I also had very little trouble operating it. The DVD player is connected to a Hitachi television that is not a high definition TV. The picture that this combination produces greatly surpoasses the sharpness produced by a VHS video cassette player. I believe that I made a good purchase.

I agree with the first reviewer.. This DVD thing is a Fad [chuckle]. Got my DVD player early on, hooked it up through the SVHS port on my TV and connected my Dolby Pro Logic (ahh.. the old days) Receiver to it. It was awesome then (first reviewer obviously hooked his up wrong) and it is crazy awesome now with DTS/Dolby Digital via Optical Digital Inputs and Component Video. Nothing touches it!!

VHS, what's VHS? Is that like 8Track or something?

A great bundle, and a great price!.......2003-12-01

I recently purchased this HP bundle, and I'm really blown away by wonderful this whole bundle was. I've never been a fan of HP products, but I must admit that they really won me over with this one.

The camera captures such beautiful and clear images. The camera also has many, many options such as several modes (like action, portrait, and landscape), it can record MPEGS, and has up to 15x zoom (3x optical, 5x digital). The zoom is really impressive. The quality of the MPEGS are really great too. You just plug the camera up to the printer or computer, and you are looking at some great stuff!

The printer was really impressive as well. With this printer, I feel like I never need to get my photos developed again (professionally). The 4x6 quality is really great. The printer is quick, quiet, and accurate.

The memory card holds a lot of pics and MPEGs to my surprise. I can't say how many because we haven't filled it up yet, but it's really a great size (especially for a starter).

This is the best and most complete set in digital imaging (in my opinion). When you buy this, you really don't need anything else. You have the memory, paper, batteries, and cables. Nothing else needed really. I've seen other bundles for less money, but none of them had as much as this one has. This one is far superior.

The printer and camera are also very user friendly. Just plug and play without the need of any direction. Very, very user friendly.

This would be a great buy for anyone, and it would also make the ultimate gift. I'm honestly thinking about getting a second one of these. That's how much I love it!

Great for awhile, then POOF!.......2007-03-12

Well, I am another victim of Go Video. I have (had?) this model for just over a year. I really liked it, played and recorded well. Used to view DVDs often, and record on occasion. Was in the process of recording a second 2 hour movie on the same day when the unit stopped recording. Tried restarting, would not record or play any DVD. From other reviews, looks like my laser head has burned out. The unit still plays music CDs and the VCR works, so it's just "mostly dead".

Will never buy GoVideo again........2007-01-08

I had the Model 3845 about one year before it started refusing to read DVDs. Several sources said that the laser head burns out if you use it for more than 2-3 hours straight and that's what happened to mine. I understand it is a common problem (look at the number of dead units being sold on eBay). Phone support was discontinued when I tried to call and they never answer e-mails. A $250. boat anchor as even the VCR would not work properly anymore. And failure to respond to a customer is inexcusable.

Short Lived!.......2006-10-13

I have owned the VR3845 for about 5 months, but have only used it sparingly. It has been used to watch no more than a dozen commercial DVDs and it was used to copy two VCR tapes. The unit will no longer read a disk. I did get it to read one after trying many different DVD disks, but all it did was go to the FBI Warning screen and freeze.

Calling their 1-800 number did not work because they said it was out of operation and to use their web site. The Service center locator on their site does not work. I think they are out of business. Anyway, you can see I am not pleased at all.

If you record a program over 2 hours long there is a high probability that the laser lense will overheat and burn out. 90 day warranty only. Expensive to have fixed. OK for short recordings.
