Buyer beware.......2005-07-17

At first Iloved this player, sadly after a few weeks the constant resets and lockups started to bother me often need to be left alone while the battery discharged. After owning it for a few months It won't even start up anymore I've sent it back to pogo and got it "fixed" only to have it lock up on starting every time 3 weeks after getting it back. My advice save your cash and get a diffrent player

Dear Pogo Execs,

I just wanted you to know how disappointed I am with you Rip Drive Product. I was a loyal PJB-100 customer (which I've gone back to, by the way - at least until I can save up for an IPOD). I loved the PJB-100, hate the rip drive. You have a great concept, just bad execution.

Reasons why I hate the rip drive:

1) Interface stinks. To be specific, it has the following problems -
a. Hard to find songs
b. Can't start playing at a folder, must choose a song. So what if you want to play all of an artist, but you have 10 disks under a sub folder of the artists name. You can't play all of the artist unless you put a song in the root folder for that artist.
c. Must go to "Menu" if you want to change many settings - should have an easy way to set things like auto-off and sleep timer
2) Settings don't really save. They often reset, so you have to set it up the way you like it too often.
3) Mine locked up. Customer service said "re-partition the drive, but you can't use windows, because it won't do a 40 GB." So I buy partition magic. Not really the problem. They gave me new firm ware.
4) Now my new firmware lets me make changes through the USB interface that show the changes on the PC interface, but when I turn it on, it's like no changes happen. I even let the battery run out. Still, no changes. - It's would actually be a pretty cool feature - change all the files but we'll remember your old settings, except I can't get to my new music.
5) Mine shorts out a lot. Static electricity makes it restart. And since it doesn't save where you are in a play list, oh well, just use the crappy interface to spend 10 minutes to get back where you were. After a few minutes, the static electricity will build up and short it out again.
6) Did you know random is not random? Same crappy random as last time I chose random.
7) It's nearly impossible to open the USB flap with just fingers. That's just another irritation.
8) Yada, Yada, Yada

You know, I usually just take it, because I'm too busy to worry about complaining. But this product stinks so bad, I thought I'd complain. I know it would take years to get a refund or a replacement because I've tried your customer service and that is no joy. They asked me my order number once. I said, "I ordered it through the site, can you look it up." They were baffled that I'd even ask.

Love this MP3 player........2004-10-13

I researched mp3 players for a couple months before finally making a purchase.

My minimum requirements were:
- Minimum storage size of 5GIG.
- FM Receiver.
- No drivers, needs to act as a USB drive.
- Replaceable rechargeable battery.
- Has to be able to play MP3, WMA and WP4 (iTunes).

There were several players that fell into this category and finally it came down two brands, the ripdrive which I had never honestly even heard of before seeing it on here and in a PC Magazine review/comparison and the Creative Zen drives.

After checking into both the Zen drives all seem to be prone to a problem with the headphone jack after a short period of time. So this was a deterrent for me as I'm usually rough on my toys.

Anyhow I've been using this player for about a month now and the only complaints I have (which are minimal) are:

- The text is so damn large on the screen that you can't see much of the song name and have to wait for it to scroll, would be nice if the font size was adjustable (pretty lame complaint).

- Can't recharge the batter while listening to it, you can however use the AC adapter while using it save the battery.

- Can't find a desk stand for it, would be nice to have one to make it easier to play with at my desk at work.

The mic works pretty good, I've recorded a few things with it and they came out pretty good. The output and input works great, I can plug this puppy right into our home stereo system and play music for hours.

The battery is awesome, they claim 10 hours and that's totally reasonable to me. I use it a couple hours everyday and recharge it once a week, which takes a couple hours to get a full complete charge.

One thing that might put off some people is the fact this puppy is large in comparison to the ipod mini or some of the others on the market. Although this hasn't been an issue for me since I pretty much only use it at home or at work and I'm not walking around with it or anything. It does come with a carrying case that fits it nice and does have a sturdy belt clip -- I haven't had a use for this, not nearly as much as I would for a desk stand. ;)

Anyhow I would highly recommend this device to anyone who is thinking about picking up something comparable. The quality is great and it works as advertised.

I have a few questions before I buy this. I have hundreds of songs downloaded on Musicmatch can i transfer them onto this product? Also it said that this has a built in battery, will it ever run out of "juice". Please email me if you know these answers. rel61@hotmail.com

I purchased my Ripdrive from J&R Music World through Amazon at a 10% saving. Why is J&R gone now?

Well, let's review.

This is an outstanding player and certainly beats any memory card player. I downloaded ~ 7GB of music (2145 songs) to it in less than 10 minutes, so you won't have to wait an hour or more to load the player (USB 2.0). It is extremely simple to operate and has only ten buttons. For those seriously interested, I recommend downloading the manual and reading it. It has superb playback and volume. I'm currently trying to run the battery down, but it's been playing 8 hrs. and 17 minutes and the battery indicator still shows full (> 70%). However, it took 6 hours to charge from 40%. I purchased a backup battery just in case from Pogo Products for $20.00. If you play it in random (shuffle) mode, it remembers the order it played the songs in, and you can backtrack. Also, if you turn off id3 tags, it will show the previous and next songs even in random mode. The time display can run in either elapsed or remaining mode. The picture of the player is still wrong unless you get to it from ThinkGeek. (See the manual or preferably pogoproducts.com.)

It has a number of repeat options: All, directory, subdirectory, and single. It also has an A-B repeat feature. Transferring files couldn't be easier. Simply drag and drop or select and then move or copy. I simply mirrored my main music directory on it. You can browse through the files or search for a particular file. You can create playlists on the fly. Updating the firmware (mine came with the latest version) is also extremely simple. Download the latest version from pogoproducts.com and copy it into the FIRMWARE folder.

The display is fairly large (160X105) and shows just about everything that you could want. It comes with a belt clip case that allows complete access to all buttons and ports, so you never have to remove it from the case. All cables are provided, along with earbud earphones which I didn't bother to open. I also purchased an FM transmitter (Belkin - seems quite satisfactory) which plugs into the earphone jack so that I can play my music collection through car radios. It has the capability to record voice on its built-in mike or any audio source on the line in jack which can be analog or digital. It can also record from its FM receiver which allows for 20 presets. This player has a number of other features which I won't go into here but which will no doubt pleasantly surprise you. The warranty is for one year, unlike Zen. I did considerable shopping on Amazon and also physically at Best Buy, CompUSA and Circuit City. Whatever you get, be sure and check out the warranty. An Archos that I was considering had one year parts, 90 days labor, which means that after 90 days you'd probably do better to can it.

Usually when I purchase a piece of gear like this, I find a number of points that I disagree on with the designer(s), but I have to say that I really can't find any nits to pick with this player. The price is low, it has more than ordinary functionality, and the performance is great. 5 STARS! Apple eat your heart out. Addendum: I was interrupted while writing this review, and the battery now has 12 hrs. 41 min.and still shows 2 bars (40-70%).

Not good.......2001-03-20

I guess because of the price I should rank it higher. But I had another walkman that did the job in this price range. I lost it and had to buy this one. It was terrible. The sound was so bad I cannot even listen to it. No sound separation or range at all. I could barely make out the music I was listening to. Go for a higher end model cause this one is a waste of 13 bucks.

The days of great sounding cassette recordings are gone.......2006-11-21

I bought this deck a week ago, exchanged it for another one, and my overall impression is that the quality of its recording capability is markedly inferior to my old Aiwa F770 deck, for which I cannot get replacement parts any longer. On the up side, this Denon deck plays my old tapes beautifuly, but its ability to record is markely inferior, with a noticeable degree of wow and flutter. For well recorded CD sources of string music like mandolins, the recordings it makes are barely listenable. For me the primarly utility of this Denon deck is to continue to have the ability to play old recordings, and to have a deck which seems well made and likely to last a while. CD and Flash memory recordings are so much better, that if I were you I'd think twice about buying any tape deck, unless you have a similar need to access old rare cassette recordings.

Denon DRW-585 Dual-Well Cassette Deck.......2006-08-16

When my thirteen-year old NAD 6340 Stereo Cassette Deck slowly started wearing out, I decided to browse for another high-quality cassette deck.

I had searched through various internet websites and local electronic stores. With the popular usage of Compact Disc's and other digital media today, I knew that finding a good cassette deck would be a struggle. Many cassette decks simply aren't produced with the same quality and expectations of that from the late '80s and '90s. After a long search, I finally settled with the Denon DRW-585 Dual-Well Cassette Deck.

Upon using the product, I was pleasantly surprised. This deck provided a clean and clear smooth sound along with the warm sound of analog. Music actually sounded realistic and the way it was originally intended. The harshness and forcefulness of CD's was gone. I never thought that cassettes could sound this good!

Aside from the sound, this cassette deck has it's set of features. The Dolby Noise Reduction (B & C) is key to eliminating hiss and other annoying disturbances during playback. Also, the deck is equipped with Dolby HX Pro which further improves the dynamic range. The Dubbing system is vital for recording cassette to cassette. This system was very useful as I had tapes that I feared of losing due to tape length that I could recapture on shorter length tapes. The deck has a convienant Rec Pause button which is great for making mix tapes. The deck is also equipped with an Music Search System, MPX Filter, Relay and Auto Reverse.

I highly recommend the Denon DRW-585 Dual-Well Cassette Deck to anyone in search of a quality cassette deck. Although it can be a little pricey (two-hundred and up) regarding decks of today, the quality and durability is without question.

Intuitive tape-editing via features like memory stop (which lets you program an automatically stop point) and normal or high-speed dubbing to copy tapes quickly (deck A to deck B at 2x normal speed).

Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction minimize tape hiss (great for classical recordings), and you may also opt not to use them (as for music of limited dynamic range and when you want as flat a frequency response as possible). Dolby HX Pro headroom extension further minimizes tape noise while eliminating high-frequency distortion during both recording and playback.

Manual bias fine tuning helps you make sure each tape, regardless of tape type, performs optimally during recording and that each tape--especially those recorded in other decks--sounds its best on playback. Each well has its own dedicated tape counter, and Denon's thoughtful cassette backlight reveals at a glance how much tape remains on a given supply spool.

Relay Play lets you listen to the both sides of the tape in deck A followed automatically by both sides of the cassette in deck B, giving you nearly three and a half hours of uninterrupted listening from two C-100 cassettes.
