This is a great way to get some exercise, while having a lot of fun. It's especially great for the kids---it gets them up and moving.

Beat Pad is not like the pictured.......2007-06-08

I think the descriptions and images of the Beat Pad Pro and Beat Pad got switched. So the description of the Beat Pad was not correct. The pad does not have padding and is flat (unlike the pictured) Hopefully people don't buy this and think they will get the better features.

A few things about this item bothered me. It is listed as with "thick padding". The photograph of the product looks like a foam pad. I thought I was getting a foam-pad, but I did not.

The product you receive is obviously not what is shown in the photograph (the pad art is different, and the dance-pad in the photograph has contours of a foam-pad, which this does not). The arrows are not elevated, as shown in the photograph.

Instead, we have just an average non-foam dance pad. If you want a foam pad, you have to pay $30 extra for the "Beat Pad Pro" - it is sold for $70. If you spend any amount of time playing this game, you'll want a foam pad (where you can feel the arrows with your feet when you play).

Two other minor negatives: First, the pad slips more than the Konami pad which comes with the game. This was a problem even on the average "difficult" setting. Second, the arrow sensor size was smaller than what I expected. You have to touch part of the graphical arrow - if you miss by 1/4 inch, it won't set it off.

Disappointing but adequate.......2007-08-24

I ordered 2 of these via Amazon from J&R, they came quickly in factory new condition but one of them was completely DOA. J&R customer service is great and they paid for return shipping and a full refund of the dead one (but they are out of stock so couldn't replace it).

Some of the lowlights of the unit:
- There are NO raised arrows on the ones they are shipping now
- After dancing on it for a while the surface gets wrinkled and if one of the wrinkles intersects the 'A' pad the game (DDR360 universe) appears to randomly select songs
- You have to stop every 10-15 minutes and straighten out the foam pads, the center one (which you stand on most of the time) ends up getting pushed down and disengaging from the other ones. This may be a side effect of using it on a padded carpet rather than a hard floor.
- Looking closely at the unit (since one of them was DOA) its fairly cheaply put together and 'sloppy'. I was hoping for something a little more solid for twice the price of the lower model.

Highlights:
- The size is just right
- The pads are sensitive but not overly so, in several hours of use we have not found that we mean to hit a pad and it doesn't fire; aside from the 'wrinkle' problem above they don't fire unexpectedly
- On padded carpet the whole unit doesn't move around move, its a solid platform and very comfortable

Overall I think we'll learn to deal with the foibles listed above and will end up using this happily enough. I hope the apparent low quality construction is just an illusion and they will take a pounding over time.

Much better game play.......2007-07-26

I got DDR Universe for my wife as a gift and have become quite a fan of the game myself. The Beat Pad Pro is definitely much easier to play on than the Konami mat that came bundeled with the game. As long as you aren't wearing shoes, you can feel where the arrows are with your feet, so you don't have to take your eyes off the screen to get yourself realigned with the mat. The foam insert makes jumping much easier on the ankels and knees. The mat does tend to move around during play, but I don't think it's any worse than the bundeled mat. I woudn't know whether the game play more closely resembles that of the arcade game, since I never really seriously played the arcade. However, I do know that I tend to get higher scores on the Beat pad Pro versus the bundeled Konami mat...I can even beat my wife sometimes!

Very bad peripheral. Does not register hits accurately. Pad slides around alot during play. Internal pad does more harm than good as the pieces do not interlock tightly.

I was worry about buying a pad cos i had read some reviews about other pad that have problems on recognizing the step, etc etc.

WITH THIS PAD, THIS IS NOT THE CASE. i have been playing hard with the pad for like 1 week and still works great.

The feel and the sensitivity is great. AT ALL, IT SURPASS MY SPECTETATIONS.

Great second pad.......2007-06-09

My kids get a real kick out of Dance Dance Revolution and having a second pad makes for fun competition. The Beat Pad Pro is a nice upgrade from the pad that ships with the game, my kids unpacked it and set it up without any help from me. There is a foam insert that assembles like a giant jigsaw puzzle and then zips inside the pad, makes for a much more comfortable experience.

5 stars for a good job porting DDR to the Xbox 360 and 5 stars for a reasonably priced second pad with a nice thick foam comfort pad.

This was flimsy and I got it as a gift. No one wanted it, and it was referred to as cheap. Then, even when I found someone to take it, it didn't even work. To pay shipping both ways wouldn't even make the refund worth while. It is going right into the garbage.

With the success of Dance Dance Revolution sweeping the arcades, many people have the definite need to shake their grooves off to those delightful dance games right in the comforts of their own living room. That has definitely been truee to the bones with this beat pad which is highly suggested for both PS2 and Xbox owners, not as much for Nintendo Gamecube owners though. This is easy to use and essential for each step if you've played DDR at home. Gamecube owners however might want to consider going for another dance pad, like the Beat Pad Mad Catz designed especially for MC Groovz Dance Craze, or DDR Mario Mix which just recently hit the store shelves all over again, after a near seven month absence. Step lively, step.

ARRG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-09

This pad is soo annoying! I have DDR Exteme 2 and it came with a really nice pad (the original, plus nonslip!) and I was so into it that I decided to buy another pad. I went to Target and they only had a few left--only this type. It looked pretty awesome so I spent my money on it. Big mistake! The little circle in the middle where you're supposed to stand is WAYYYYY to small for me (I'm size 12)-whenever I'm standing in the middle it's like I'm sitting on a button. It also crinkles up and is thinner and "crunchy". Whenever I play a song I find myself standing on a button! Don't waste your money!

Not worth it.......2005-12-31

I purchased this pad at my local Frys Electronics for close to $40 thinking I would be able to use it to replace some $2.99 pads I bought several months ago.

As it turns out, this pad slides around constantly, has no sensitivity whatsoever, and is all together a piece of junk. The pads I purchased for $2.99 are higher quality than this one. Stay away!

Not the best.......2004-12-28

I have owned this pad (not exact one, in blue) for 5 months and all of my friends own this pad as well. This pad works well for beginners, but once you have reached light, standard, and difficult it begins to slide around because it doesn't have a grip. I once had a party and when we were playing it, by the end of the song the pad had slid up about 2 feet and turned diagnally. I have also slipped and fallen using this pad. If you fold the pad there is a good possiblity that the sensors will move and the pad will become useless, this happened to my friend, so don't fold it if you buy it. I suggest that you don't buy this pad because you can probably get a much better one for only a few dollars more. In the end, spending a few more extra dollars will be worth it and you'll be safer.

Beginners Start Here.......2004-09-26

The Mad Catz dance mat is intended to be used with Dance Dance Revolution, a popular video game that "combines quick reflexes and timing with dance music".
That being said, it is difficult for serious DDR players to make use of this dance mat. The pad tends to slip during play, so you'll probably have to tape it to the floor. The sensors can't really take much abuse, so the arrows will probably stop responding to steps within a few weeks of heavy play.
Note that the above only applies to experienced and skilled DDR players. This dance mat is fine for beginning players who want to test the game without making a huge investment for a better pad. You get what you pay for, after all.

Just to let you know, the pad that I bought died. I got it around June last year, and now the sensors either shifted too far out of place, respond too slowly, or don't respond at all. The slipping is outrageous; try doing Paranoia on this cheap pad, oh wait, you can't. The pad will slip from one side of the TV to another. And don't even think about buying two of these. In my opinion, this is a death trap. Think about it: if both pads slip, the players could get seriously hurt.

This product has been working fine since I purchased it a few months ago. It comes with a plastic holder which can only hold one sd card at a time (others can hold 4) I think some of the other brands may hold a bigger bang for the buck, since I think the qualities are similar. I kinda wished I had purchased more than 32MB card. It is quite annoying switching in between cards.
