Happy with this Camcorder!.......2007-03-30
We bought this camcorder in 2006, it's perfect for us! The hard-drive can store many hours of video and the zoom is great! The 12x zoom is so good that the 1MP still shots can actually look somewhat impressive (but don't get rid of your digital still camera!) I can't imagine how awesome the 25x zoom must be on the new 2007 models. The DCR-SR60 is easy to use, so don't worry if you're not very tech savy. It's simple to transfer video from the hard drive to a PC, and not too tough to burn video onto a DVD with an external DVD burner. Our only complaint is that it sometimes takes a second or 2 for the color to adjust when the light changes, and the video can look a little funky during those times. We don't use the camera in dark areas much, so we've been happy with the overall performance.
Spend a little more if you can and get a much better camera.......2007-03-18
This Handycam is Great for only one reason - the 60gb hard disk. It means never having to worry about tapes or DVD etc. It's small and light.
I returned a Sony DVD handycam which malfunctioned within the first 30 days of receiving it and bought the SR80 instead.
I'll focus on the negatives:
a) VERY POOR low light performance. Shooting indoors is a pain. For example - you try to shoot a dance floor in a night club - forget - this camera can't deliver. I am about to purchase the light attachment hoping to alleviate this problem. The only way to get halfway decent low light shots it to shoot in a party mode where the image loses all sharpness.
b) The original lens that comes with this camera ahs a very narrow focus - it's like you have tunnel vision. I bought this in time for my daughter's 6th birthday party and the results were terrible. It was impossible to get a decent shot unless I was at least 10 ft away from the subject - and I am talking about trying to get more than one person in the frame. I bought the wide angle lens for about $40 and this has made a lot of difference. The lens however is not sharp when you have zoomed out to the max. I also found that I cannot use the camera in most conditions without the wide angle lens. Why Sony would sell a camera with such a poor lens is beyond me.
c) Sound is OK. It's supposed to be Dolby Surround. It provides only mono sound with the Bluetooth remote sound attachment.
d) Super night shot is useless beyond a few feet. Trying to shoot our Christmas tree was a nightmare. The wide angle lens also blocks the infrared light that is supposed to light up what ever.
e) 1 mp Digital stills: Why do they even have the option? Results are terrible. There a cell phones which shoot better pictures?
Pros:
1) Image stabilization is excellent.
2) I already mentioned the benefit of having the large hard disk.
3) Good battery life.
4) Nice wide LCD makes it easy to operate even for people with big hands.
5) Easy to navigate interface.
6) Hot shoe for external attachments like additional light and Bluetooth microphone device is necessary.
7) Day light shots are great.
Great Camera.......2007-03-09
I bought this camera directly from the sony store paid $650 on March 7, 2007. Amazon was selling it for $350 more than what i paid for it. Buy direct from Sony and save. The guy at the counter tried pressure me to buy the extended warranty, i declined. Sale guys make more money selling equipment warranty then the camera itself. Camera works great, i also bought the $20 stand which i use for my sony digital stills camera. You can't go wrong with this product.

No more tapes to carry. Great features........2007-02-23
I have used an older Sony 8mm camcorder for years. Nothing digital about it. Transferring tapes to my PC involved a third party converter. I had graduation to go to the next day that I really wanted better quality video of. I looked at the other brands and decided Sony had done me well for years. I liked the features. The hard drive made purchasing and carrying media go away. The camcorder has a more powerful zoom than my old one. The picture quality is great. Battery life is outstanding. 16.9 is great. Moving video to my PC is amazingly fast. After my purchase I saw Sony has a new model DCR-SR82 available soon. It has more zoom and can use memory cards. There is a limit to the amount of zoom you can use. At 800x it's still hard to keep the picture steady with a tripod. The 82 I think has 1000x. I haven't found a lot places to use that much zoom. I was able to get clear up close video of the people speaking at the graduation across a large auditorium with about half the zoom this unit has. The sound was great too. There was a sound system in the auditorium. I have no regrets buying this camcorder. If you intend to record for more than an hour and a half at one event get the larger model 90 something battery and use the one that comes with the unit as your backup. There is the auto settings and then, for the more qualified, many manual settings. There is an infra-red setting for low light video. My final answer; buy this camcorder.
Easy to use.......2007-02-16
As a first time video camera owner I found this camera simple to use and intuitive. I turned it on out of the box and just started to use it without needing to read any instructions. Simple!

A Fine Little Light.......2007-06-01
This light works great; I'm very pleased with its performance and low profile design. It provides strong light in those low light situations and flesh tones remained neutral.
Wow !!!.......2007-05-18
This little light is POWERFULL ! working with SR1 camcorder and doing very well!!!
COST EFFECTIVE VALUE FOR A VIDEO LIGHT.......2007-05-06
I HAVE THE SONY HDR SR1 AND LIKE MOST VIDEOCAMCORDER OWNERS I NEEDED A COST EFFECTIVE VIDEO LIGHT WHEN SHOOTING IN DARK PLACES. THIS VIDEO LIGHT SERVED THE PURPOSE. IT'S TRUE THAT THE LIGHT IS INTENSE ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS NEAR HUMAN SUBJECTS CAUSING THEM TO SQUINT, BUT THAT IS THE PURPOSE FOR BUYING THIS LIGHT. A VERY COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. IT IS ALSO TRUE THAT THE BATTERY DISCHARGES FASTER, BUT THE SOLUTION FOR THAT IS TO BUY THE SONY NP-QM91D "M" SERIES BATTERY.
Great light, weak base.......2007-04-08
I love having this little light in my camera bag, but I've broken 2 of them in the last year, due to the relatively flimsy construction of the light's thin plastic base. On this video light the base is all important, as it where the power originates, and once it's broken, it's broken; time for a new one. The low cost makes it relatively painless to replace, but still.. Oh yes, how did I break it? Once by putting the camera into it's bag with the light still attached, and also by someone brushing against the camera when it was on my shoulder. It's great to have, but be very careful to put it away when you are not using it.
For the future I urge Sony to create an LED version with lower power consumption, variable brightness and a stronger base, but meanwhile, it's a must-have in any camera bag.
Size doesn't matter.......2007-03-09
I know Sony already has a great reputation, but I was impressed with this product. It's small and light-weight, but it's pretty bright. It also has an auto function (just like a flash), so if you're not sure when you'll need it, you can just use that function. My camera doesn't have a built-in flash, so it works well for video and still shots. It is a tad pricey, but it's a Sony.

Buyer Beware.......2007-08-16
I wrote Sony asking if this item was compatible with my Sony Camcorder because the website information was unclear. The Sony rep. assured me it was, so I bought the mic...it wasn't compatible. After causing a stink with Sony, all they said is that they were not responsible for the website info or the rep.
What a great product.......2007-07-27
I have used this product in many different applications and have been very impressed with its performance. The range meets or exceeds the specified range. I bugged a church van during a scavenger hunt and they never knew it was there and I was able to capture their teamwork for a video of our youth program. The range was great. The audio quality is great too. I have used it for an interview as well as many other applications. The wind does get picked up a little even with the wind screen on (but it is still the best performing microphone I have used for my Sony DSR-300 video camera). I would recommend it over a shotgun mic any day of the week. Having a microphone separate from the camera also removes any mechanical noise that the camera makes (motor drive of the tape or any minor bumps that the camera takes. It makes your camera look a little strange with the receiver but it is well worth it. The light is a little annoying on the receiver but if you put the wind screen on you cannot see it at all. A must have for anyone who wants to improve their audio quality on their videos.
Sony Wireless Mic for Camcorder.......2007-07-19
Fast shipping, works great. The only issue is that it is mono which could be a problem for some people. I am very happy with its sound quality.
Works Great!!.......2007-07-15
This product works great with the camera. I am a pastor and we started taping my messages -- difficult to hear without the wireless mic as the camera is 30-40 feet back, but can hear perfectly with the mic [not that anyone WANTS to hear what I have to say :)]. I keep the mic clipped to the inside of my glasses case in my shirt pocket and with the windscreen on, nobody sees the blue light or even knows I have the mic on me -- plus, since it is clipped to the glasses case, it stays stationary and there is no rustling. Highly recommend for anyone taping anything at a distance.

With this remote microphone, home video can look/hear very professional.

Right Headphone Fell Off.......2007-08-23
As I said in the title the right headphone fell apart. They should have made it sturdier for longer usage. Other than that these are a boon for low budget audiophiles.
yep, they sound great..........2007-08-05
... and, yep, they're comfy.
so why the paltry 3 stars?
usability. each earpiece rotates 360 degrees, round and round, for as many times as you can manage to spin/twist them around. i seem to have a penchant, no matter how meticulous i try to be when putting them on and taking them off, to somehow spin one of the earcups the same direction every time. and having seperate lines out of each earcup, meeting under my chin, has resulted in a twisted rat's nest of headphone cord.
it would seem pretty easy to have stops at just under the 360 degrees, and i certainly can't think of any functional advantage of allowing endless 360 deggree rotating of the earcups, so, 3 stars.
i now have another requirement for future purchases of headphones: one line out.
update: well, i found `em, the perfect replacement for my grado sr80's and the frustration they gave me: sennheiser hd 485's! a little heavier, while more comfortable; better fidelity (especially after about 30 hours, after which what miniscule "brittleness" they seemed to exhibit when i first plugged them in completely disappeared); and, of course, one-sided cord. the 485 is quite an exceptional product, better in so many ways than the grado and almost 30 bucks cheaper. and the 485 is efficient enough to use with my ipod, spinning it dangerously close to being a real hi-fidelity player. truly remarkable sound from 192 aac audio files.
Sound is good, but really uncomfortable........2007-07-18
After twenty minutes or so, these really start to make my ears feel chapped and fatigued.
I'm not an audiophile, but they sound really great. They were a Consumer Reports best buy and really highly rated. It's unfortunate that they are so painful to wear.
Great sound quality, not-so-great other stuff........2007-07-17
As far as actually listening to music goes, these Grado SR80s are great. The bass is fairly strong, it sounds very full and lively, the list goes on. But, these are REALLY open heaphones. They're almost like speakers, except you wear them on your head. On moderate volumes, you can hear it from far away. On higher volumes, you can hear it pretty clearly, vocals and all. Buying open headphones you'd expect the sound to leak through, but the sound on these leaks out like crazy. But, the power of these comes from it being so open. If you cover the sides of them, then the sound quality drops completely. Since they're so open, it almost defeats the purpose of headphones... but at least they sound good! Also, the design of these seems a bit flimsy, so take care. I haven't done anything to damage them so far. And, since these rest on your ears instead of around your ears, they can get a bit uncomfortable if you wear them for long periods of time. It's also a bit tricky to find the most comfy spot to position them over your head and ears. But the good thing is they're not really bulky like Sennheisers, so it doesn't feel like you're wearing a piece of furniture on your head.
Overall, they deliver excellent sound, but they're really open, seem kind of flimsy, and can get uncomfy if you wear them too long. Well, that last part applies to nearly all headphones anyway. And if you're just gonna use these headphones at home or at an office where they won't be moving anywhere, then you don't really have to worry about them seeming fragile. And if you're gonna listen to music where other people can hear and they won't care, then... you won't have to worry about that either.
Excellent Headphones But Poor Comfort due to My Sensitive Ears.......2007-07-14
Best sounding production headphones I have ever heard...bass is not overwhelming but it is tight and perfect. Only complaint I have is the comfort so these headphones are not the right type for me.

Customer Reviews:
Great product for the price........2007-08-30
This product is really nice for the price. I just needed a decent tripod for a 3 week trip so I didn't want to spend too much money, but wanted something still nice. I really like the travel bag and how when the tripod is not inside, the tripod section can be folded up and stored under the velcro flap making it less bulky. The actual tripod is better than expected and even works with my Canon D SLR Rebel XTi. It is very light weight which is great for traveling, but it can be a little wobbly when moving so take care when adjusting it so that it doesn't fall over if you have a heavy camera on it. It works great with my Nikon Coolpix S7c also. The mini tripod in the handle is best for smaller cameras, but still a nice addition for certain shots. I also like the flip locks for extending the legs instead of twisting locks. Overall this product is worth the price and more.
Product met expectations.......2007-08-03
This product met my expectations. The carrying case is a nice bonus and I like that the little tripod is stored within the larger tripod. This meets my needs.
Good as a Starter Kit.......2007-06-12
My concern is the bag. Very uncorfortable when you are carrying the camera and the Tripod at the same time. The bag is for a small camera not for a slr, I have to detach the lens from my Nikon N60 because barely fit in there.
The tripod is very light, is easy to use and is worthy considering the price. But if you are looking for one more strong and steady this is not for you.
Love it!.......2007-06-03
I love this product that I purchased! And the best thing is that I got the order overnight without paying for expedited shipping!
Great Item...Mom loved it.......2007-05-06

Good but not durable headphones.......2007-06-15
I have owned a pair of these headphones for several years now, and the sound is just fine for the money. Nothing jaw-dropping, but good, neutral sound.
What's not so great is the foam used for the cushions that fit against your ears. After 2-3 years the foam dries out/rots and crumbles, leaving black crumbs on everything it touches. I've bought replacement foam cushions once, and my replacement pair has disentegrated as well (I was hoping they would improve the formula, but alas no).
Also the plastic frame surrounding /holding the phones has cracked on one side of headphones. I'm pretty gentle with my audio gear, using it around the house mostly, and I was suprised to see this happen.
I wouldn't buy another pair of SR80s, because I use headphones only occassionally and expect them to last many years. If I used them daily and expected to wear them out in 2-3 years, I might buy another pair.
Update: I'm now using homemade earpads inspired by those described on headwize-dot-com. I removed the foam pads and with the help of a pair of black cotton socks and a couple of rubber bands, I have something that works. These pads are about the same in terms of comfort as the foam originals--for me, either is fine for a 45 minutes and beyond that the phones begin to feel uncomfortable. It's good to take a rest between albums anyway, your ears need it.
Braking the Grado Mystique, Sort of..........2007-06-10
Yes, everything they say about the Grado SR80 is true. It has bass, but not overbearing, just there and just right. It puts you not in the front of musicians, but right in the middle. It has clarity etc.
BUT, it became un-listenable to me mainly because of the imaging. Things sounded out of place, especially voices. They became too centered and overbearing. It just seemed to push instruments aside and out of the way.
Some examples are Johnny Cash's Boy Named Sue, the drum rift I liked so much seem to come from the top of my head with Cash's voice taking center stage and the rythm of the drums seem to lose their tempo and sounded somewhat "sratchy". Alive n Kicking's one hit wonder Tighter, Tighter voice imaging became completely like mono as the Grado put the male/female voice tagging in the left/right earcup decisivly. I never heard it like that before!
It also could be because the Grado is suppose to be harmonically accurate. If this is true, then kudos, but I could not listen to my songs that way. I also know that songs are "miked" a certain way and Grado is just accurately reflecting that possibly. It is also quite possible that these headphones were really made for jazz, voice, instrumentals or orchestra music. I mainly listen to top 40. I admit some pop songs sounded good, mainly those recorded recently.
That brings me to another praise of this headphones. That they are supposedly better than listening to speakers. Well, no matter how I tried it still sounded like they are coming between my head and no further. Try as might I could not say I was ever listening to speakers.
Finally, the construction of the shell is of cheap plastic. Complete with plastic spurs showing where they snap them off the "trees". Possibly inside, where it counts might be better made. I never looked.
CONCLUSION: It is quite possible that the mystique of Grado lies in it's supposedly non-resonance design. Could this accomplishment by Grado of non-resonating headphones make it become just a huge sound "magnifier" somehow? Instead of sounding like the band was 20 feet away, you are now 0 feet away without having to turn the volume up which people take as some kind of mystique?
Grado Prestige Series SR80 Great Headphones.......2007-04-15
These are awesome headphones, especially for the price. You can hear the mid's, hi's, low's and everything in between. Expect the headphones to perform as the manufacturer states they perform. I am happy with mine and would recommend them.
Grado SR80's are phenomenal!.......2007-03-28
These are excellent headphones at any price. The low, middle and high frequencies are well balanced (i.e., there is little "coloration" of the sound), and the level of detail in the sound is remarkable.
Stellar sound at a great price.......2007-03-10
I have listened to many sets of headphones over the years, and I have to say these are my favorites as far as sound quality. Just wonderful, clear sound, great build quality, and I don't find them as uncomfortable as others have suggested. Just check out the thickness of the cord compared to other headphones in this price range. Wow! My only complaint would be the length of the cord - it's shorter than a similar pair of Sennheiser's that I have and I wish it was about a meter longer. Grado does sell extention cords, however. This is a great buy.

Cuts cornes, but worth the savings.......2007-07-02
I agree that this product is absolutely worth the savings compared to the equivalent name-brand battery. It doesn't tell you when it's done charging, but in camera mode, it did tell us that we had a full battery. It would be nice to have that extra feature, but that feature isn't worth the cost of name-brand. I'd rather buy several of these batteries for the same amount of money.
When it says equivalent....it means it........2007-05-26
This product is very much worth the money saved by not getting the name brand. It gives you at least 2 hours worth of battery. The only thing I didn't like was it didn't tell you when it was fully charged...the charge minutes just stopped increasing....but that's a small price to pay for the money saved. I very much recommnend this battery, good product.

Customer Reviews:
Very good microphone.......2007-09-19
I am a movie production teacher, and take lots of video for friends and family. I bought this microphone to improve the sound of the HC42.. It did the trick. The wind screen that comes with the mic does a great job, and is a conversation piece (looks like a dead squirrel) The bottom line is that the sound is noticeably better! Isn't that the point?
Great Background Reduction, a Little Too Good.......2007-07-28
I really want to like this mic. It does a fantastic job at reducing the background noise. The video sounds so much softer and focused with this on it but the only problem is that it also reduces the clarity of the speakers that it focuses upon. I set my DCR-SR300 8 feet away and did a little test.
I spoke directly at the machine, away from it and tried talking softly but not quite a whisper. The built in mic picked up the higher pitches in my voice but also in the machine. There was a sort of background white noise going on. With the mic, the white noise was gone and everything was softer. Unfortunately, it softened the high tones in my voice and slightly decreased the volume. The only reason I'm keeping the mic is because Adobe Premiere Elements has a feature where I can increase the volume of the audio. Therefore, I'll have quieter original audio but I can crank it up when I go into editing.
Overall, I like it well enough and I have found a way to work around its short-comings. However, if you are taping and not doing any editing for your videos (such as just keeping your miniDV tapes/DVD's that the camera makes) then you'll have to weigh whether or not you want to deal with the quieted focal point and reduced background noise or begin editing like I am now doing. If you decide to go with editing, I would recommend Adobe Premiere Elements rather than Nero or the onboard Movie Maker on your PC/Mac. My primary disappointment here was the tone and volume reduction. Alas, I don't have the 5k to shell out for a professional camera and gear so I'll settle a bit. :)
I Like it for loud music situations-but rolls off at 150Hz.......2007-07-27
I film live music rock bands. The mic on my DCR_SR300 totally distorts, starting at 105db.This Mic rolls off at 150Hz,and solved this problem. This Mic doesnt have as good of range as the on board Camera mic,but I had no problem recording up to 122db.At this point the buffer gets overloaded on the Camera. So for me,I,m Happy.I will only use the HST1 when filming loud music bands over 105db.I will have to EQ the low end to get a decent Audio, but at least its not totally distorted!!And the Video and pics are Excellant!!!
Nice.......2007-02-17
This mic works really good because it sits up off the body of your camcorder so it will not pick up motor/disc/tape drive noises like the stock mic that is in the body. It also comes with a wind sock that works extremely well for outdoor use. It will big time cut down the wind noise on your recordings. It is a stereo only mic so if your cam has 5.1 surround you will lose that. I have also owned the HQP1 which is the 5.1 version of this mic and it worked great as well but it is no longer available. Oh yes by the way it does create better sound for your video than the stock mic. I highly recommend this addon.
Could not hear much difference.......2007-01-12
I have not had the opportunity to use it much, but I am a little bit dissappointed about the sound quality, I was expecting clearer sound, the performance seems to be too similar to the embedded microphones to be worth the money
