Won't print Lightscribe Discs on a Mac.......2007-09-14

I bought this with high hopes of adding a professional edge to the CDs and DVDs I hand to my customers. It will write data just fine but when you run the labeling software and flip the disc all you get are communication errors. After googling I found this is a known issue with Mac OS X 10.4.9 and later (even listed as a problem on the lightscribe website) and the only known resolution was to use USB 1.1 (they also recommend using firewire but this model is USB 2.0 Only) Since this is not an acceptable solution I emailed Lacie support (they close early or I would have called). All I got were generic responses like fix permissions, don't have any other devices plugged in etc.

They acted like they had ever even heard of this problem.

They want me to send in my drive but refuse to provide an advanced loaner/exchange. I have only had it 5 days.

I am waiting to hear back from a CS Supervisor and will update this review when I do:

**UPDATE**
Lacie Tech support supervisor did return my call and also refused advanced shipment return. I then asked if they would test a replacement and send it out as soon as they received my drive. I was told this was not possible either, They want to completely test the drive I bought 7 days ago since they have never heard of this error, Apparently the blogs and the lightscribe website are not reliable sources. I was warned this may take LONGER than usual for a warranty repair. They did offer to pay for the shipping of the return.

**UPDATE 2**
After having not received the promised call tag I called them again. Spoke to a supervisor (an actual one, turns out the previous fellow was not) and he apologized and agreed to advance replace my drive. They sent the upgraded D2 drive. I just tried it out and while the USB still does not work on the Mac the Firewire works fine. This is consistent with what I have read.

As long as you do not have a Mac running OS X 10.4.9 or 10.4.10 then this drive works just fine

Never turns off.......2007-05-07

I could never get the drive to stop unless I completely turned the power off. I had some of the same problems others had with the disc spinning too fast and making lots of noises.

quality is bad.......2006-12-27

I have dvdrom on my laptop. so I bought this to burn dvd.
1. It has extremely high fail rate(more than 90% fail, I wanted to burn 3 dvd and 32 blank discs were destroyed). The problems are all the same. the recorder freeze. it can stop anywhere, range from 1% to 100% of processing. even though I just repeat the same project, it can stop somewhere else. and the same problem happen to the one I exchanged from officemax too.
2. I tried all the methods to find out the reason(you named it, change media, upgrade everything, Even restore my system). Finally I used other brand external dvds recorder without any problems. It turn out the problem is this dvd recorder itself.
3. Ask tech help from this company is pain. Their tech support phone line is dead. only live chat is active. they tell you to upgrade this and that and try to burn a dvd. of course it did not help. since the problem is the product itself. when I used my friend's dvd recorder, I did not need to do anything.
4. I should read the reviews before I bought it. the bad thing is I bought it from officemax on black friday. officemax did not allow return after 14 days. I made an exchange instead of return at first. after I found out it was design or quality problem of all dvd recorder of this brand, it is too late. I can only contact manufacture.
5. the product came with two nero writer software cds instead of one nero writer and one dvd driver cds. obviously, it is very poor quality and mistaken package.

I'm sorry I ever bought this.......2006-10-28

Although this unit mostly works, it spins at very erratic speeds and likes to occasionally overspin and lose its grip on a spinning DVD, at which point the DVD goes banging around loose inside and you have to power the unit off to stop it. Then when you power it back on for a second to eject the DVD, there's a burning smell that smells pretty toxic. I'm going to throw this away and buy something else, definitely by another manufacturer.

It worked well, easy to install and operate, until its early death after 3 months of very light usage.

Technical support was available via Internet chat, but the phone lines were busy. After an hour and a half of unsuccessful attempts to revive the DVD burner, technical support asked me to send it over for replacement. I paid for shipment and waiting to get it back.

Update: It came back after a month and a half and worked well since. again, I am a very light user.

Okay But Not Okay.......2004-06-27

I bought this adapter to get a wireless connection for an old Windows XP Gateway desktop in my basement, thinking that the nice external antenna would help my odds.

PRO:

The card installed perfectly, connection comes up as "excellent" every time and I was into my network and Internet connection within 5 minutes. SMC has 24/7 toll-free tech support.

CON:
The drivers are not certified for Windows XP and the so-called setup utility crashes itself. It's in the "Add/Remove Programs" area but won't uninstall. Don't try to use the utility if using XP... allow XP to manage the network settings and you'll be fine. SMC even recommends it after calling them. The useless utility is there and I leave it alone and use XP to manage settings.

Bottom Line:

Decent wireless adapter if you're running "b" and it does great with my D-Link 614+ router but don't pay much for this adapter. It's worth $25-$30 but not the $58 that I paid for it.

I bought this card for a FreeBSD box in my test lab at home because it is one of the few wireless PCI cards on the hardware compatibility list. So my surprise was complete when it arrived and I found that SMC had, like many other annoying vendors, changed the chipset and not mentioned that anywhere or changed the product number. So it didn't work in FBSD....

I decided to repartition that test boxes hard drive and install Win2k so as to get *some* use from this card while waiting for the BSD driver wizards to put something out. The card installs fine but then when I launch the configuration utility the box freezes completely and I have to manually power it off, then boot into safe mode and take the utility out of startup to avoid a cycle of freezes. SMC's web site was useless as there is no updated config utility; I couldn't even find the version that came with the card, leaving me to wonder what I would do if I lost the CD. I guess WinXP people could still use this card but I'm not upgrading my OS just so I can use this card.

My win2k box is service pack 4 with a million hotfixes, and there was no anti-virus or any other weird software on the box at the time (it was a test box!). This product is useless and I feel very much deceived by the chipset switch-a-roo. I will never buy SMC again.

Easy set up, Great connection.......2003-05-15

A while back we baught a refurbished computer, which needed internet. We had my Apple laptop connected to our 'SMC Barricade 4-Port 11 Mbps Wireless Broadband Router' basestation by AirPort Xtreme card. Now my task was to connect the basestation to our other computer.

Installing Card: The hardest part was getting the case open! After that I screwed in the new card in a few seconds, put the case back on, and was ready to go.

Installing Software: I put the CD in, clicked a few times, and I was done. All I did is follow the on-screen instructions. After about 2 or 3 minutes I was getting a signal from the basestation.

This card is great! Extremely easy to install, and the connection is way faster than on my laptop. We have a steady, fast connection across the house and through a bunch of walls. A great card at a great value.

Need to get the new firmware and patches.......2003-04-04

I got this PCI card because I got the SMC wireless router at the same time. I figured that the same brand name would make the WLAN work seamlessly. The installation of the card was very easy on my Dell Dimension 4550. After installation, the only problem I had with the card was the connectively problem that the previous reviewer spoke about. Then I went to the SMC website to download the fireware and patches for the WLAN monitoring software, it worked flawlessly.

Conclusion: With any hardware/software you buy, it's a good idea to install it and check to see if there are updates and security patches available.

Set it up along with smc router. No connection from 15 feet away, one floor down. Got a connection with the netgear fm114p , though link quality was poor and barely adaquate speeds.

Check for pci cards with external antenna that can be positioned away from the body of the pc or pci cards with removable antenna, so that it can be upgraded with a higher gain antenna.
