Amazon.com Review

One of the nice things about Windows CE devices is that manufacturers don't have to stick to a specific design. They can make large screens or small screens, add keyboards or rely solely on the touch screen for input, and basically do whatever they want. Hewlett-Packard decided to make a do-anything device when they designed the Jornada 720, and on most counts they have succeeded.

The device sports a keyboard just large enough for comfortable touch typing and a large 640 x 240 screen that makes Web browsing and document editing much easier than is the case with a smaller device. This useful combination means that most people will be able to use the Jornada 720 as a notebook computer replacement. However, if you're looking for the ultimate in portable handheld computing, you'll have to look elsewhere.

The 720 is about as loaded as a Windows CE device can get; it comes with an integrated 56 Kbps V.90 modem, docking station for easy connection to a PC, AC adapter, and rechargeable battery. It's outfitted with 32 MB of RAM and a 206 MHz StrongARM processor that really makes applications fly. On the multimedia side you get an integrated speaker and stereo headphone jack for audio playback, and one of the most beautiful TFT active matrix displays we've seen. It can mix and match more than 65,000 colors at once, renders very crisp text, and never had trouble keeping up with our input like inferior passive matrix screens do.

The very thing that makes the Jornada 720 so useful--its relatively large size--is also its biggest drawback. Its weight can make it unwieldy, and there's no good way to get a grip on it when there isn't a flat surface to use it with. We ended up accidentally pressing keys far too often when holding the unit with one hand, though with a little practice juggling becomes much easier.

If you are graduating to the Jornada from a smaller handheld (such as a Palm) instead of slimming down from a notebook, prepare to be underwhelmed by its portability. Expect to be impressed, however, by its zippy performance, generous display, and expansion possibilities. --T. Byrl Baker

5 out of 5 stars Small but Sweet.......2007-01-17

This is a marvelous device, great for a writer. I can work on my stories on the fly and synchronize to my laptop for editing.
Containing Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook, it is everything you can ask for in on-the-go computing.
The charge lasts about 9 hours at a time; I plug it in every other night to keep it topped off, and carry it in my pocket on the subway.
Lay in an extra battery if you can (before HP stops making the product - they are up to Jornada 900)

5 out of 5 stars Good memories but you can't go home again.......2006-07-23

I am on my 2nd Jornada 720; the first one I positively loved, but in the rush to upgrade (and free up some money) I sold it in 2003.

Recently the Jornada handhelds have fallen into Bargain Bin status, and I picked up my current 720 and a 680e (older sibling) for almost nothing. The 720 is by far the snappier and better of the two. The 680e is a little heavier and bigger, and better as a mobile typing platform.

However, these are 1998-2000 era machines; and things have changed substantially. Heck, they can barely play video! The two biggest signs of obsolescence are the serial cable for connecting (though ActiveSync still works) and Pocket Internet Explorer 4.0. For most of the serious business stuff people would use these for such as taking notes, spreadsheets, calendar and contacts, these are invaluable.

However, the lack of a modern web browser hurts severely, as checking your e-mail, accessing bank accounts, corporate intranets, secure websites, etc., becomes difficult or impossible.

Still, despite all the whiz-bang functionality of the Pocket PC toys, I still prefer the palmtop format. I've had more than a few people wonder what these new gizmos were I was taking notes on at meetings, not having any idea how old they are. And for discreetly being able to type notes/ideas there's nothing better. The 720 can support flash cards and PCMCIA network cards, so it can (or was) useable as a mini web terminal with a wireless card.

That was a lot of fun, being able to whip it out, surf the web and take care of errands/business, and put it back in your pocket while the old school road warrior is still trying to get their laptop booted up and connected.

While the 720 is at the tail edge of usefulness, it's still a neat little computenmaschinen to have around.

4 out of 5 stars Consider This Before Accepting Negative Reviews.......2006-05-10

The HP Jornada 720 (the final model of this line was the 728) is the finest, practical design mobile Handheld Computing device ever made. The Jornada rival is the NEC MobilePro 780-800 line. Both clamshell, mini-laptop looking, devices were high quality and expensive (average retail was over $1,000).

These devices are authentic handhelds and they are true mobile PCs. In comparison, PDAs are very expensive toys. Both NECs & Jornadas have practical data input-- a useable keyboard & a touch screen. Both Jornadas and NECs have built-in card slots. Being PDA type devices, handhelds have no moving parts & they are instant on - off. They come with built-in phone modems & infrared wireless ports. Neither line, the Jornada or NEC, was designed for modern radio type wireless Internet but both lines are fully capable of it.

By the way, the chief reasons laptops break down are all related to their being moved about. Damaged screens (from being dropped or handled roughly) & hard drive failure are problems. Own a 720 and like me you will soon consider a laptop a lug-a-bout portable desktop computer. Make a home made bubble wrap envelope for your Jornada or NEC and they should be O.K. There is no hard drive to fail from chuck hole caused rough movement in a car, or from dropping.

Don't let the memory limitations throw you off. Your basic productivity programs are permanently hardware loaded in ROM & Many mobile Windows CE programs can be installed and run from CF cards and both Jornada & NEC lines can handle up to one gig or bigger CF cards. Some enthusiasts report success runing CF micro drives. There are also inexpensive CF card slot adapters that allow additional adaptability.

Some of the software that comes with these devices is severely outdated, especially the Microsoft syncing software, Microsoft Activesync. No problem. The best version is Activesync 3.8 anyway and it is freely available. Download and install it to your XP system and you'll have no problem syncing with a Jornada or NEC

These handhelds were never meant for the general consumer market. They are enterprise devices, which is why few consumers know about them.

I own a Jornada 680e (under $90 like-new refurbished)& a 720. I also own a NEC Mobilepro 780 and the 790. My favorite is the NEC 780 - 790 because NECs have a larger keyboard than Jornadas do. I have big hands but I am able to two-finger touch type with the Jornada models (680 - 728).

Among handheld enthusiasts the Jornada 720 and 728 is the clear favorites. While both Jornadas and NECs are high quality engineering and make, the Jornada is the best. The 720 & 728 has external voice record and playback buttons and they have a stereo headphone jack.

Get this: Both Handheld lines get 7 or more hours active use time per battery charge and they weigh less than 2 pounds including the Li-ion battery. The Jornadas are more energy efficient so you can be a little more sloppy about leaving a CF or wireless card plug in the off state. The NECs need to be plugged in if you leave cards plug in. No problem. I simply make sure my cards are disconnected when I am not using them.

I do about everything with a computer that computers are used for. When I leave my house, I never take a laptop. I always take either my NEC 780 or NEC 790. I connect with public access points automatically without any problem. I like the Jornada 720 better but I can type much easier and faster on the larger NEC.

There are a lot of things you can do to update a Jornada or an NEC and there is a very active, quality user support group whose members will help you as you have never before received information and assistance for a Computer. The site? HPCFactor.com... Registration is easy and free and the site is a storehouse of free software and drivers for handheld computers.

The site again for everything handheld is hpcfactor.com

I give the Jornada 4 stars because I consider the Sharp Zaurus SL 3500 the best handheld made. They are Sharp Linux devices, are not sold in USA, are cheaper than current HP and Dell PDA toys & the keypad is too small for many westerners.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent little machine.......2005-09-29

I bought my Jornada 720 three years ago on ebay for a fraction of the "new" price - and I love this machine. The best thing is instant startup (unlike any laptop, which takes forever to start), and of course its size and battery life (again longer than any laptop). I added a 64MB card, and use another Compact Flash card to store and transfer large files from and to my deskotop. ActiveSync works fine too, but it is slower.

I was able to find better business apps than the Microsoft inferior "pocket" products included in the package - Textmaker (from a German software designer) which is a fully functional text editor (including footnotes and embedded objects); the same manufacturer also has a fully functional spreasheet, but I recommend SpreadCE from Bye Design Ltd. in the UK - it is a fully functional spreadsheet that has virtually all desktop Excel functions and some charts too. Cash Organizer (from Inesoft, which I belive is a Russian company) is an excellent addition to manage multiple financial accounts. One Cat Doodler 3 (from the US) is a great graphics program. Mobibook has a wide selection of titles, including dictionaries.

In short, it is a great, very dependable machine with nearly full business functionality, if right third party applications are added. It also doubles as a good mp3 player. The machine clearly has limitations - processing large Excel files can be painfully slow, no external file links, not so great graphics - but it is not a substitute for a desktop. But it certainly has many advantages over a laptop and doubles as an i-pod substitute. Too bad HP discontinued the model - perhaps because it is an effective substitute for other overpriced products such as clunky laptops and even clunkier windows XP - but it is still available here and there.

1 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment ! !.......2005-07-27

I purchased this refurbished from TigerDirect in May 2005; the product arrived in VG condition; it was impossilbe to synchronize this PDA with my desktop PC; I tried! 2 technicians tried, all failed!! The proprietary Microsoft software, 85% of it useless, can't be changed; new software couldn't be added. This is by far the worst PDA I've ever used, of 5 - 8 over the years; Hewlett Packard & Microsoft should be ashamed to put this inferior hardware on the market. A colossal failure.

1 out of 5 stars Worse Web Cameras Ever.......2006-02-04

These are a new generation of "webcams". These cameras have a built in web server. They connect to your home net via ethernet. Management programs can display the images from the cameras on your computer screen.

I recently examined a Hawking camera. Superficially, it seemed to have security, but there were only two official ways to get an image from the camera. One was by using a facility where the camera e-mailed you an image. This image was tagged as spam by my provider because it used the big5 character set, even though it contained no text. But the other way was to use a java applet which was automatically downloaded from the camera, the same way any applet would be loaded.

This was the only image data displayed on the camera's web interface.

I wanted to get a still image, so I traced the applet's data stream. The applet simply connected to a port on the camera and then presented four characters and a newline. The camera responded with a four byte header and a jpeg. I was able to use echo, sleep and netcat to pull jpegs out of the camera - but I did not have to present the password to pull jpegs out of the camera.

The instructions that come with the camera tell you to open this port to the Internet via port forwarding from your firewall. You also open the camera's web port.

If you do this, then a hacker can see that you have this camera and then they can look for other open ports, and if they find the camera port, they can easily pull jpegs out of it with no password.

This is OK, though, since the camera is so incredibly bad that all that anyone will see is sort of a flesh shaped amorphous mass. I took this camera back to the store.

There are two other products on the market. One is the D-Link DCS-900W, and the other is the Linksys Wireless G. Both are comparable to the Hawking and way better.

The Linksys presents both sound and video as an MPEG4 stream. I know of no way to get still images from this camera (other than by having the camera e-mail you one). There is an active X control that allows you to view the video on a windows system, or, with the right codecs, you can use Media Player or Mplayer to view the stream. However, only a Windows user using Internet Explorer can access the camera through the web interfacr and see full motion video. Everyone else can go through multiple layers of frames to determe what the url is for the mpeg4 stream - then, that URL can be fed to a regular media player that can play (or record) an mpeg4 stream.

The Linksys can be connected to a 10 or 100 wired ethernet, or to an 802.11b or 802.11g wireless net. It supports WEP. By default it is configured to run at a fixed address - but it can run on WEP. A unique feature is that it has a small LCD panel and the LCD panel displays the IP address that it uses. It can look for motion within the camera and send out alerts by e-mail if motion is detected (that is, no external program is required to deal with automated motion detection from this camera). All data is presented on the web interface, and basic authentication (userid and password) is demanded if the camera is set up to require it before the video stream, or any data other than the base screen is presented. There are two levels of users - those who can display the video stream and one user who can administer the box.

I have not installed the Linksys management software - it seems to be unneeded. If I could find an open source solution that would allow me to convert mpeg4 to a still jpeg, then this would be the winning solution. But the conversion stacks I have found garble the images horribly. I believe that there is conversion available in the support software.

The D-Link has a URL where a jpeg can be accessed. All interaction is via web - and all interaction requires basic security. There are two levels of users - One user who can configure the camera and those who can just display pics.

The D-Link has a Java applet and an active-X control - take your pick - that allows you to view motion pictures - and it also has full motion video - so you can view full motion video from any browser that supports Java applets, or, if you are an IE user who has not installed Java, you can use the Active-X control to look at the video. Thus, the full motion video should work for almost everyone - I know it works in Linux and Windows. The D-Link has the best low light capability. It also has the clearest picture, by far. It does not have 802.11g and it does not have sound. It does support WEP. Internally, (to the applet) the motion data is presented as a series of jpegs, using a standard http stream format. All video or jpeg data is presented only after successful basic authentication.

The management software for the D-Link camera works reasonably well, but there is no reason to use it other than, perhaps, for upgrading the flash - although the "lite" software can present a very high quality full screen full motion video. All motion detection recording on the D-Link is done in an application on a connected windows PC.

These cameras cost a few dollars more than the Hawking, but they actually have a modicum of security.

The Linksys is a winner if you need sound, or if you want to get the extra performance of an 802.11g device - if you do not have any 802.11b devices, you might well not want to introduce the first one.

If you need motion detection in the camera, the Linksys devices also win. Linksys cameras and a wireless router would obivate the need for a computer onsite, and, with a DSL connection, say, would allow for the accumulation, at a central site, of images where motion was detected.

If you do not need sound - say, for a manned security setup, the D-Link cameras would allow you to put 16 cameras on a single screen - no wiring cost, and you could have motion detection and recording. That would be expensive, but probably much cheaper than any other solution. Considering that you could avoid wiring, it would be a winner.
