My faithful calculating companion.......2006-04-04

I bought mine about 10 years ago, and I still have it and use it extensively. It has seen use all through pursuing my undergraduate degree and my Ph.D., and in my current work. I have used it for calculating things related to computer graphics, statistics, data compression, and a host of other areas. It has always been up to the task. It is loaded with useful functions and does a lot. Sure, it's not as fast as a more modern one, but it's more than adequate.

Used to own one. Durable but some graphing problems........2006-01-14

The good thing about the 48 and other HP's I've owned is that when I have broken them they were actually stolen or lost. I can't say that about the TI-86 or TI-83's I've owned and paid a considerable amount for. HP's seem to be made to last; I hope that hasn't changed. The weakness on the HP48G that I owned during the 90's when graphing calculators came out is that the graphing functions were not as well designed nor worked as well as the TI's. They seem to have improved the latest models so they act a lot more like the TI's. It's something to consider if you are buying an HP graphing calculator from the mid 90's when I purchased and then lost one.
The early HP's were absolutely terrific and once you get RPN ,something that most competent math/engineering/science students should be able to master, it is the best way to write equations. It actually makes it easier and faster.

Fine craftsmanship!!!.......2004-03-27

HP calculators are built to be used by professionals. They are built to a standard of quality you seldom see anymore. Unlike calculators from other manufacturers, people who use HP calculators tend to use them for a VERY long time! I have had my HP48g for 8 years now and it still measures up to the competition. YES RPN entry is different BUT it is FAR MORE efficient to use in lengthy or repetitve computations. Unlike Casio,Sharp, and TI, there is a tremendous amount of professional grade software for scientist and engineers widely available. There are games too. The HP48g is solid and it has an IR port as well as a serial port for connection to a computer or other device. This calculator is a powerhouse! If you are a science or engineering major and you want to be serious about your trade then this has to be a device you own!

Can't imagine being without it.......2003-01-28

I've had this calculator for 7 years now and am very satisfied. Once you get used to the stack system of inputting, you wonder how you ever did without it. I'd recommend it to anyone entering the engineering field, either school level or professional.

HP Calc Review.......1999-12-30

I bought a HP48S in 1993. Even though I was an extremely poor Engineering student at the time, I found it to be money well-spent. The equation solving capabilities of the HP proved to be essential in getting me through tough engineering exams. I liked the 48S so much that I recently bought the HP48GX, and it has proven to be even better than the 48S in many ways. I would recommend this calculator over any other brand on the market to an Engineering student or graduate.

I first purchased the HP 48GII about two years ago. The first one didn't last a month, but HP quickly gave me a new one free of charge. The second one ran better, but the keyboard was very uncertain and often caused input errors. NOT GOOD and very frustrating. Well now the keyboard has failed all together and the calculator won't turn off. This is REALLY POOR merchandise! I do not recommend anyone purchasing this calculator. Unfortunately I've heard that other current HP models are just about as bad. My old HP 41C lasted nearly 20 years...I don't understand why the new ones are so cheaply made. ///

Pros: This calculator (and presumably other HP 48/49 calculators) has an operating system that far surpasses TI's in usability. The angled keys are really nice to use, when they work.

Cons: Too bad it is hard to use a calculator with a broken keyboard. The bottom row's hinge have almost all broken, so the keys are really loose and wobbly. Apparently, the plastic hinge mechanism is really weak and this is a common problem.

why not get a HP49g+? Look at the price!.......2005-06-17

Hold on to your 48GXs.......2005-01-27

I had high hopes of this calculator being a "real" 48G, maybe with a faster processor running an EMU, but the original case/key design and ROM.

My trusty HP48GX no longer functions properly, the 3, 6, and 9 keys fail to register when pressed.

Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard would join me in my sadness and disappointment at the lack of innovation at HP, and the pathetic replacements offered to the fine 48GX, the lowly, rubber keyed, algebraic entry, plastic faced, 49G and 48GII (both of which I have tried and rejected).

Upon inquiry to HP customer support about the possibility of getting a 48GX repaired, it became apparent that the cheap printers they make, Carly's merger with Compaq, and Hewlett Jr.'s denouncement of the company's current direction are indicative of the level of service and quality of customer support technicians hired by HP, [...]
While searching for a replacement for my 48GX, I encountered a strange phenomenon, used HP48GXs are selling for twice what the new flagship HP calculator costs, and as much as $400-$900 for the few unused 48GXs still around. This is a testament to the failure of HP to continue to provide innovative products, and to the brilliance of the engineers and programmers of the original 48GX at the now defunct Corvallis research facility.

How can a nearly 15 year old technology product still remain the most desirable and sought after in it's class? Only through initial brilliance coupled with the failure of executive management to develop and support the innovation required to improve such a product rather than trying to replace it with a lesser machine. What right-minded consumer would purchase a 49 to replace a 48?

Alas, we have witnessed the demise of the only truly innovative producer of engineering calculators. What does the slogan "HP Invent" mean today?

The talent behind the last several 48G ROMs, Jean-Yves Avenard and Gerald Squelart have given me renewed faith in the future of calculators. After being fired by the new HP, they have taken it upon their selves to create the finest calculator in the world, the Qonos, and I eagerly await it's release. [...]

In the meantime, I am about to embark upon an all-or-nothing attempt to service my own HP, a process which involves a drill press, razor blades, and surgical precision in hopes of extending it's life once again.
