24-Hour Shipping Promised but not Delivered.......2003-06-20
The online guide said product would ship in 24-hours but after I entered the order on Wednesday, 6-18-03, the shipping information showed 48-hours as in Friday, 6-20-03. Also, I specified and was charged for overnight shipping but again, the shipping information says that my product won't arrive until Monday, 6-23-03. If you can't ship or deliver in 24-hours, don't say that you can.

Nice Hidden Option.......2003-07-23
Like most normal DVD-ROM's this drive does a nice job of playing DVDs at 16x, nothing special there, good seek times, and IBM's high standard for quality projects. However, one other thing this drive does well is read DVD-RAMs at 3x, an uncommon characteristic for many drives. I searched high and low for a DVD-RAM drive with a high read rate, and in some cases any drive that would read DVD-RAM. This was one of the few that I found that was above 1x, most are 1x or 2x and cost an arm and a leg, mainly due to the fact that they are recorders as well.
Now, most people don't care about reading DVD-RAM, but I found that it was extremely important if I wanted to transfer information off my Panasonic DVR-HS2, then transfer it to my computer for futher editing and burning to my multiplatform 4X drive.
The problem is the Panasonic DVR-HS2 will only record DVDs onto -R at 1x, and RAM at 3x. This means that if you have 20 hours of VHS to back up onto your DVR-HS2 harddrive, it will take you another 20 hours to burn it and a ton of DVD-R. But if you use the DVD-RAM option you can burn all of the info off in a third of the time, and you only need to use 1, that you can write over 1,000 of times. Once you get the info on the DVD-RAM then you can let the IBM drive read it into your computer, super fast, and transfer the information about anyway you would like.
The DVD-RAM option is probably not big to a lot of people, but for those who do possess a Panasonic DVR, or any other stand-alone DVR,it is a very wise option to have for your PC.

Great DVD drive!.......2004-12-30
Hmm.. I'm not exactly sure what to put in a DVD-drive review (heh), so here goes:
It arrived in perfect condition.
It was just as easy to install as a regular CD drive (you just take the case open, pull out one of the blank faceplates, slide the drive in, screw it down, plug it in.. and you're done!). I run Windows XP... There was no need to install any special software! It comes with a great DVD viewing program which I've installed and messed around with -- but I usually just use Media Player to play my DVDs because it's very straightforward! The program that comes with the DVD drive has so many buttons and features, it's kind of confusing at times. I just like to put the DVD in the tray and push play -- I don't care if the program can make it clean my house or pack my lunch! :)
It functions great, just as one would expect it to. I've been using it for months now, and it still works flawlessly! When I bought it, it was marked down to under twenty dollars.. Which is why I bought this particular one. It seems to function just as good as some of my friends' drives that cost them forty dollars or more!

Terrible.......2005-03-18
Even with external mics, this recorder is so noisy that you can barely hear anything. I can't believe I wasted money on this! It doesn't work at all practically. If you are considering a recorder, look at anything but Sony. If you are looking for recorders for EVP, don't listen to sites that suggest this one. It makes it's own noises that have nothing to do with EVP. It's a scam. Go for a panasonic!
Decent recorder with great capacity.......2004-06-26
I bought one of these probably a year or two ago and at the time the 150 minute capacity far exceeded any others in the price range. I purchased it specifically for doing mystery shopping evaluations and it has worked well for this task about 80% of the time... occasionally there is just too much background noise to hear what's being said. However, I normally keep the recorder hidden in a jacket pocket or in a pocket in my wife's purse, and it still does a decent job! I especially like the real-time clock (so I know the exact date and time of the recording) although it would be nice to have a seconds counter. (The elapsed time counter will show seconds but the clock does not.) Battery life is good but nowhere near the 10 hours of recording life listed. Buy some rechargeable AAAs, you'll need 'em. Extremely small and lightweight. The mic jack is a nice feature but I've never used it because I don't have a mic to fit!
Very Disappointing from Sony.......2004-02-26
I am truly disappointed by the quality of this product, coming from Sony. Usually Sony has reasonably good products, but this one really is a piece of trash. It is advertised as a recorder for lectures and meetings, and as a college student, I thought this could help me take better notes. Wrong!!! This recorder can only take sound straight from your mouth into the mic at close range, but if you are interested in anything other than your own voice, you're out of luck with this model. I tried it out in one of my classes - a class held in a small room with no windows in the basement of a library (don't get quieter than that!!) and the recorder managed to garble every word of the professor, while picking up an amazing amount of roaring noise which is apparently either above or below the human hearing level, since it seems to not exist in the real world! Sony should be ashamed!! Please, if you intend to buy a recorder for lectures or meetings, don't buy this one!

The product, by itself, is so-so. It has adequate battery life and recording time. But its recording sound quality may sometimes be unsatisfactory. However, if you attach an external mic phone instead of its built mic, it gets much better. I think it's good enough for light users.
