Amazon.com Product Description

The ScanJet 4600 from HP is a see-through flatbed scanner that allows you to view documents and materials as they are being scanned. The see-through window lets you make precise scans, showing you the exact scanning area, while the included HP photo and imaging software helps you to get the most out of your scans. With larger items, simply scan multiple sections of the original and reassemble with the included software.

With 2,400 dpi optical resolution and 48-bit color, scans are accurate, crisp, and true-to-life, while the maximum document size of 8.5 by 11.7 inches lets you easily scan up to letter size documents and accepts a wide variety of media types including paper (plain, inkjet, photo), envelopes, labels, cards, banner paper, and more. The 4600 easily scans to multiple file formats, including BMP, TIFF, GIF, PDF, HTML, JPEG, FPX, TIFF compressed, PCX, RTF, TXT, and PNG, while the OCR (optical character recognition) software lets you scan documents to text.

Preview scan times are as little as 6 seconds, with 4-by-6-inch color photos taking as little as 27 seconds. Four front panel buttons (power save, scan, copy, launch HP Instant Share) provide convenient automation of commonly used functions, and HP's memories disc creator helps you easily create slide shows from your scans. The 4600 connects via a USB port (USB 2.0 compatible) and is compatible with both PC and Mac platforms.

3 out of 5 stars Best Designed Scanner-Questionable Software though.......2007-06-12

I've had mine since 2004 and haven't had any problem except trying to remove that Scan-to-the-Web icon from my desktop. I'm currently using it from both my XP laptop and new Vista laptop and no problems. The Vista driver is a basic, just make it work driver though and that's all I require. In all fairness to the many terrible reviews here, I've only used it as an ordinary scanner to make copies of things to print or save to a file, etc. No photo tricks or anything like that so perhaps I'm avoiding what others have complained about. It has worked well 100% of the time and my personal feeling is that, bad software or not, its the best designed scanner I've ever seen. The storage possibilities are excellent...on the desk, on a shelf...small footprint and so much more attractive than those flatbed tanks. Mine is stored on a shelf above my desk and I just either scan from the shelf or take off the front and scan on my desk...how more convenient can you get than that. I'm the exception here but I've never had a single problem with this scanner since 2004. I truly dread the day when I'll have to replace this vertical scanner with a huge, ugly flatbed monster one day.

1 out of 5 stars HP Trashware.......2007-05-28

I bought the HP ScanJet 4600 because I need to scan material from books. The see-through concept is perfect for teachers like me. However, the scanner warms up very slowly. The HP software is astonishingly bad. (Only install the basic driver. Skip Readiris.) The scanner only does simple black and white text scans reliably. After about a year, the hardware stopped working. (More toxic waste for the landfill.) Thank you Carly Fiorina, HP chairman, (given a going away present $21 million when canned in 2005.) I really like spending my meager salary on trashware.

3 out of 5 stars Very poor software.......2006-11-23

I know a bit about scanners, I've used two of these HP see-throughs for thousands of scans, and I don't expect the software that comes with peripherals to be five-star stuff. But the software with these HP scanners is just astonishingly bad. And I don't mean the extra photo-editing software, but the basic driver stuff that you can't easily avoid. I wrestle and wrestle to get a kinda-works solution. It takes an amazing amount of fussing around, and then it doesn't do what you just told it to do. The hardware is fine, but the software is just unbelievably incompetent. A very shoddy, bait-and-switch, rip-off kind of product. Its designers should be replaced with professionals.

1 out of 5 stars ZERO STARS - WORST SCANNER EVER.......2006-07-24

1. It's not compatible with HP Pavilion computers, even after all their "technical support" and downloading upgrades and patches, it simply can't communicate with HP's own computer. (It works on my old Gateway computer, though poorly).
2. The scan quality is a mess, with light & dark bands across the scanned image.
3. It's especially no good for small 3d objects, which are almost entirely out of focus. This is not the case with my old scanner, also and HP, scanjet Pro, which is better in every way.

It's not just a hardware problem, as it at least scans on my old computer. But it insalled different scanning software on the new computer - from the same CD! And both computers have Windows XP. Their software engineers are simply ignorant of how to make one piece of hardware communicate with another.

HP really screwed up on this one and so far they've done nothing about it. Someone should get the axe there.

4 out of 5 stars Very good deal for the price.......2006-05-31

This $30 refurbished HP ScanJet 4600 has performed very well for over a year. No hardware or software problems scanning or printing. I have scanned and enlarged postage stamps with excellent results on monitor and when printed. Not perfect color matching of course, but very good for the price and my needs.

        Amazon.com Review

Minolta has packed quite a punch into the compact, 4-megapixel DiMAGE F100, adding a 7.5x total zoom, movie mode, and audio recording capability so you can leave yourself notes about your shots. Even better, Minolta has done a great job of making the camera fun and easy to use, which is essential in any camera, but invaluable in today's crowded compact digital-camera market.

The 4-megapixel resolution of the F100 produces very large images that are fantastic for prints larger than 11 by 14 inches. Thankfully, the F100 allows you to step down the resolution to a more manageable 2-megapixel level (1,600 x 1,200 pixels) if you need the space on your memory card.

Its 3x optical zoom lens aids in photo composition, and an additional 2.5x digital zoom (7.5x total) further magnifies your image. Remember, however, that digital zoom reduces the sharpness and detail of your image, so it's best used sparingly.

Minolta built in some great autofocus features to help make your life easier, including wide-focus area autofocus, and spot-focus areas with focus-area selection (which enables you choose a specific, narrow focus field). During our testing, the autofocus worked beautifully, and we never ended up with our target out of focus.

The F100 uses AA batteries and, disappointingly, comes with a set of disposables. We used the camera at a family gathering over the course of a weekend, and the batteries held up fine, so the power drain isn't as horrendous as in past digital cameras. Ideally, though, you'll want to buy a set of rechargeables, to help preserve your sanity, pocketbook, and the environment.

Overall, the DiMAGE F100 performs admirably and is the perfect size to carry just about anywhere. --Michael Lewis

        Pros:

        Cons:

        Amazon.com Product Description

Take the quick and easy route to high-quality images with the stylish 4-megapixel Minolta DiMAGE F100.

        Optics and Resolution
With its 4 million effective pixels, the DiMAGE F100 captures sharp, detail-rich images. At this level of resolution, you can turn your shots into photo-quality prints that are larger than postcards or even enlargements of up to 11 by 14 inches.

A wide zoom range is an essential tool for framing the shot you're looking for. The F100 offers 3x optical zoom, with a range covering the equivalent of 38mm to 114mm on a 35mm film camera. When you've reached the limit of the optical zoon, the F100 then shifts into its digital zoom, providing an added 2.5x magnification--for a total of 7.5x zoom and a telescopic 285mm (equivalent) focal length.

The F100 features area AF (autofocus), which automatically follows the movement of your subject within the autofocus area, switching the active focusing block to make sure the subject stays sharp. Camera response is further enhanced by rapid autofocusing via to the ultrafast ASIC circuitry, a sophisticated focusing algorithm, and quick lens adjustment. You'll get focusing speeds of approximately 0.35 seconds at the widest lens angle and approx. 0.5 seconds in telephoto (1 meter).

        More Features
A movie mode captures video clips with sound. Depending upon resolution, these clips can last up to 35 seconds. Movie files are recorded in JPEG format (320 x 240 pixels). The limited length and resolution of these clips guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

The F100 is also equipped with audio-only recording, which can be a convenient tool for taking notes. A single clip can be 30 minutes long, and is stored as an 8-bit uncompressed wave file. Playback is not included.

Keep a record of where and when you took a particular shot by adding an audio caption to it. Captions are recorded after image capture, and can be 5 or 15 seconds long.

The built-in flash features a TTL (through-the-lens) flash metering system, and has a variety of selectable flash modes. When the camera is set to auto, you have four modes to choose from: auto, manual fill-flash, red-eye reduction, and flash cancel.

        Power
The included CR-V3 lithium battery provides power. You can also use a pair of AA batteries.

We recommend getting a set or two of rechargeable nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries and a charger. A digital camera is power intensive, especially if you're using the camera's LCD display, so they aren't recommended except in a pinch. To ensure you'll always be ready for action, we recommend having two sets of rechargeables so you can always have one set in the camera and the other set in the charger.

        Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on Secure Digital memory cards. Consider the included 16 MB card a starter capacity, since its 14-picture limit means you'll need to return to your computer often to transfer images and free up the card for more pictures. A 64 MB card will store nearly 60 images taken in standard mode at a 1,600 x 1,200 resolution.

To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera. Your computer should automatically recognize your camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive.

        Size
The DiMAGE F100 is easy to carry around on all your photo expeditions, coming in at just 4.4 by 2.2 by 1.3 inches and 6.5 ounces.

        Contents and Recommended Accessories
The package includes the DiMAGE F100 camera, CR-V3 battery, AV and USB cables, hand strap, software suite, and 16 MB Secure Digital memory card.

Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we strongly recommend the addition of a larger memory card, an extra set of rechargeable NiMH batteries and battery charger, and a compact carrying case (for protection and to keep pocket lint out of the viewfinder).

1 out of 5 stars both of them are broken.......2005-07-28

I owned this camera and I used one at work. Both of them malfunctioned after about 1 year (lens extension motor stuck open). Also, battery life was terrible. Constantly changing out batteries even when using 2300 NiMHs. LCD viewfinder was useless outdoors.

4 out of 5 stars Great camera for the price.......2005-02-27

This camera takes great pictures and I love the Area Auto Focus that lets you tell the camera where to focus.

My major problem with it is that the selector dial sticks out and can turn when you put the camera in your pocket. This has happened several times and I think it damaged something because the focus stopped working after 4 months of ownership.

Other than that, it is very slow but takes great pictures.

        3 out of 5 stars it broke.......2004-11-10

i love the quality of the pictures, and it'sfun to use, but the motor broke beyond repair right after the warantee was over. wouldn't buy another one.

1 out of 5 stars One of the most frustrating cameras I have ever owned!.......2004-09-11

I have owned several cameras but this was my first (and last)Minolta and the worst camera in my experience. I really thought that the Minolta name implied a certain degree of high quality - I was wrong. What good are 4 Megapixels if the camera can't be used in normal circumstances. (Stick with Canon, Nikon, Olympus and even Kodak)
        Pros
--Excellent clarity and true colors at close range (outdoors in good lighting only)
--Almost always excellent photo quality outdoors in daylight
        --True flesh tones and colors

        Cons
Battery life is horrible - Even with the expensive enclosed battery I operated the camera for about 30 pictures before wiping it out.I wound up buying 8 rechargable AA batteries (2100ma) and constantly had to change them out
--digital display had to be kept off in order to save battery life
--impossible to use in low light for subjects beyond 6 feet
--camera took over 10-15 seconds to adjust itself for dim indoor use - you will miss a lot of shots (People posing for these shots always wound up with a look of irritation that the shots were taking so long to take.)
--terrible photo quality (clarity and color) results indoors or outdoors in dim light. Camera can't focus and adjust beyond 6'
--The lens takes forever to telescope in and out when turning it on or shutting it down.
--Terrible preset adjustments don't improve performance - almost always make it worse
--Manual settings are very difficult to set due to the maze or menus you have to navigate through
--Anything above a 100 ISO setting produced so much noise thatthe pictures were rendered usless
-- very long refractory time between shots - takes forever for it to recharge itself between pics
-- takes a very long time to save each pic

3 out of 5 stars Great stills, but non-Windows compatible video format.......2004-07-07

This is a good camera for awesome still photos, but don't get too close; tend to be blurry. And even in macro mode, you have to be perfectly still (tripod) as well as your subject. The lens did get stuck once, but has worked fine since.
My biggest pet peeve is that the video only records in .mov format. Only RealOne can play that. I cannot use it with Windows Movie Maker, as only Macs can. I wish it could have an option to record in .avi or .mpg formats.
So, when my husband lost it a month ago, I was a bit upset, but glad that now I can get a camcorder that records in a Windows compatable format and that takes stills as well. I will not buy any Minoltas until they offer those formats. It is very important to me; I have 3 children that are growing fast.
And I also have one more pet peeve: everytime your batteries die or you remove them, you have to reset your date and time. VERY annoying! No memory battery to keep data you entered. This camera is good, but with a few minor improvements, it can be awesome.

The single-speaker radio offers 30 programmable county codes, AM/FM tuning, date, time, alarm functions, and even auto switch from AM/FM to pertinent all-hazard alerts.

For tuning, the radio employs drift-free PLL (phase-lock loop) technology and an easy-to-read blue, backlit LCD. You get a convenient, 10-alert memory, and you can add, edit, and remove unwanted alerts at any time. The radio uses the supplied AC power adapter or four AA Batteries (not included).

5 out of 5 stars So far, so good........2007-09-26

I just received this radio, and it picked up 3-4 weather stations with no problem. Perhaps this is to be expected, but I also just received a Kaito KA009 radio. The Kaito receives static and FM stations on its analog-tuned weatherband, but no weather stations. I haven't used all of the Midland radio's features yet, but compared to the Kaito KA009 it's golden.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Weather Radio.......2007-09-25

I've had this weather radio since spring 2006. It has a very loud alert system for weather watches and warnings. It is a little difficult to set up. That's the reason for the four stars. Bottom line: I wouldn't be without this weather radio.

        5 out of 5 stars Great radio.......2007-09-22

Nice radio, great pickup and sound. I would like the siren to be a little louder but other than that it is great. Got here fast too

        5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-09-17

Great monitor. Does exactly what it is advertised to do. Easy to operate.

5 out of 5 stars Already saved the day!.......2007-09-15

Although we have had a NOAA radio on the boat, it didn't do us any good when a rash of heavy storms came through our area. So we decided to get one for the house. Not two weeks after getting it, it went off in the middle of the night 3:00am. We got up and closed the windows before the storm hit. (Did exactly what we bought it for).

Two features I really like are the SAME settings that allow you to narrow the counties down to just the ones that concern you, and the ability to run on batteries, as we have lost power too. The SAME feature saves you from hearing the alarm go off all the time when a storm is no where near you.

I like that it is small and travels well. We brought it on vacation and used it on one set of batteries the whole time. It is very easy to reconfigure for a new coverage area when traveling, simply set it to "ALL" counties, it saves your SAME settings for when you return. We live in the far suburbs of the Twin Cities, and no need for an external antenna.

In the event of a tornado it could literally save your life!

It is now a staple in our kitchen, and we use it to listen to AM/FM radio all the time. Well worth the money.

XP2 Super is a sharp, fast, fine grain black and white film. It can be used for any photographic subject, but ensures excellent results when there is a wide subject brightness range. XP2 Super has improved exposure latitude compared with XP2, and gives exceptionally sharp, crisp prints. The excellent highlights and improved shadows of XP2 Super give enhanced negative contrast for optimum black and white print quality. XP2 Super is easy to expose, and has extremely wide exposure latitude. XP2 Super is easy to process. It is a black and white film, which is processed in C41 type processing chemicals alongside color negative films. XP2 Super is very easy to print. Negatives are printed on black and white paper in the same way as conventional black and white negatives.

5 out of 5 stars Black and White Proof Prints, Cheap, No Compromises.......2006-06-22

Love shooting black and white film. However, I'm a hobbiest and it's difficult, time consuming, and expensive to make 15, 20, 30 black and white prints. That takes hours and hours in the darkroom and costs a lot in terms of paper and chemistry. Sure you can make contact prints and look at them under a loupe, then print only the handful of prints you really like in a darkroom session, which is what I do. However, there are always negatives you would like to have a print but don't make the cut. You have to make these tough choices or you would be in the darkroom forever. Because of this, I always seem to have a backlog of negatives to print.

Many scan them, but to me you might as well shoot digital if you're not printing them. I set up a dedicated black and white printer a few years back. However, to my eye they simply don't match the beauty of a wet processed print, which you "nail". That's the whole fun of it.

The other option is a lab. But black and white is now considered a speciality process for which you pay a premium. They're not really an option for a hobbiest at $0.45 per print, plus processing fees and postage.

The solution? Ilford XP2 Super. It's C41 process meaning it can be processed at any photo lab. The "proofs" look great and are cheap - costing no more than a regular roll of color film (the black and white paper alone would cost more than what I pay for processing). It's also lightning fast - no way you could bang out 36, 6x4 proofs including developing the film in a tank, hand process, in an hour like at the corner pharmacy.

The difference between Kodak's black and white C-41 and the Ilford is Kodak's negative has an orange base. It will print better on the color paper used at the lab, but from what I hear (never tried it) it's a difficult film to work with in the darkroom because of the orange tinted negative is designed for printing black and white on color paper. The Ilford does not have the orange tint of the Kodak, it's really designed for printing on black and white paper so it prints with a very slight tint on color paper (Some labs are better than others at handling this film. I've had some labs print this without a tint at all). However, its clear base handles like any other negative for making enlargements in a darkroom on black and white paper. This is why I choose the Ilford over the Kodak. However, Kodak's no slouch either if you're content with 6x4's you don't plan to enlarge.

If there were quality compromises, I wouldn't use this film. There really aren't. It's quite a beautiful film, very sharp, with great laditute and contrast, and a signature look all its own. I was slow to warm up to this film, but after processing about ten rolls, I now realize I was being silly - stuck in my old ways.

I have just taken the plunge and have ordered a 100' roll for loading in a bulk loader. No more hard choices, no more bottleneck at the enlarger, no more unprinted pictures - I'll always have a print... for better or (usually given my current skill-level) worse.

        5 out of 5 stars B&W without the darkroom.......2005-02-15

If you've ever wanted to take black and white pictures with your camera without the hassle of finding a way to get them processed and printed here's your solution. You can get this processed and printed at the local 1 hour lab, just mention to them that the pictures should be black and white, neutral tone. Sometimes when this film is printed on an automatic color printer they come out with a color cast if the machine isn't fancy enough to auto correct and no one notices. This film is also very good in relatively low light environments, since you can use it at up to 800 or even 1600 ISO without significant problems or any fancy correction during processing.

For professionals and serious amateurs you get a unique balance of features. Wide exposure latitude, easy commercial processing anywhere in the world (well, almost anywhere) and true black and white results including filter effects and the ability to easily print on high quality black and white paper without the complications that usually come up from printing from color negatives. It's not a replacement for conventional black and white film, but it does add another tool to your kit and there are lots of times when it is a definitely time and energy saver.

For myself, I use it when I want black and white but easy processing, there are no professional labs in my immediate area. I also have used it for proofing a setup when polaroid wasn't available. A few test shots and a trip to the drug store lets me see where I'm making a mistake without using up expensive film, processing and time. Heck, an hour's break after setting up a studio for something is just what most of us need, time for a drink, some food and fresh air.
