Amazon.com Review

Hewlett-Packard's ScanJet 5300Cse is a basic scanner that more than adequately fills an impressive range of needs. The accompanying software CD-ROM also includes three especially helpful programs--the Boomerang Internet Design Shop, Adobe PhotoDeluxe, and the Hemera Photo-Objects Gallery--along with the well-designed scanner driver and other extras.

Setting up the scanner itself was a breeze. We installed and loaded the software in about 25 minutes. Then, we hot-plugged the scanner (kept the computer on while connecting the scanner) into our PC's USB port. In fact, we recommend that you keep your PC on, as the scanner driver software displays short video snippets that clearly demonstrate how to perform each step. On our computer screen, we watched actual human hands setting up an actual scanner.

The ScanJet's oversized quick-installation poster was cumbersome for us to unfold and follow. Also, there is no printed user's guide, so if you have questions, you'll have to consult the extensive electronic version on the CD-ROM.

In our tests of the 5300Cse, we scanned documents into text. The scanner was also quick enough that we could use it simply as a copier and could send an image directly to our printer. With a simple click, you can attach images to e-mail or send them via fax.

Hewlett- Packard makes other models similar to the ScanJet 5300Cse, some complete with an automatic sheet feeder and some with a transparency adapter, but what we found compelling about the 5300Cse is its simplicity. This scanner is a good, solid flatbed model, unencumbered with gadgetry that may not be applicable to many users' needs. With its 1,200 dpi resolution, the 5300Cse does a beautiful job of scanning text and photographs and making copies--the tasks we think you'll care about most. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars Perfection........2002-08-23

This is a great quality scanner for scanning anything from photos to documents. I highly reccommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Scanner.......2002-02-07

HP 5300CSE is a great scanner. I scanned all kinds of photos and some documents for faxing the first week I had it. It works great with no problems, and through the USB connection it's pretty fast too.

1 out of 5 stars Only for scanning photos.......2001-08-09

My biggest problem with this scanner is that it has no software to adjust the picture (contrast, color, size, etc) in any way, except trimming, either prior to or after scanning. You can't even rotate the picture! Most times this is just an annoyance because you have to open another image-editing program to do even the simplest thing. It comes with the shareware version of Adobe Photodeluxe Business Edition (which is weak even in the full form) to do this, which is acceptable for simple jobs. When the scanner converts to jpeg the image looks hideous (but this scanner is the only software I've seen to do it so poorly), so you must manually change the file from bmp to jpeg/etc for every single picture.

BUT, this becomes more than just an annoyance if you're scanning art. There are only two options for contrast prior to scanning: 'auto-sharpen image' or 'don't sharpen'. If you don't sharpen, every image looks muddy, awful, and unacceptable. If you sharpen, images with shading look awful. (it turns a softly shaded section into hideous patches of color) IMPORTANT: You can not fix this in any image editor! I have Adobe Photoshop, the industry standard image editor costing hundreds of dollars. I've tried to decrease contrast and increase brightness, scale down the picture slightly with bicubic resampling, and use the blur filter. I've also tried scanning it larger and shrinking it later. Nothing works!

Colored or B/W pencil works end of looking the worst. It's not that you just lose some of the original's quality, it's that they look awful. I wish I could show you an example but no links are allowed in reviews.

Don't get this scanner if you're an artist or if you're concerned about quality. If you're only scanning photos, it's okay, because the effect on photos is barely noticable.

5 out of 5 stars idiot proof.......2001-04-22

I had the scanner installed up and running on Windows ME in less than 30 minutes. Mind you, I've never before owned a computer much less a scanner. My computer setup is also HP. This works great and does everything I want it to. And, it is user friendly. Very easy to use. Thanks HP.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Scanner, No Problems.......2001-02-02

I got this scanner two weeks ago & it has been great. It took 20 minutes to install the scanner software & hook up the scanner. Very good quality, & mediocre character recognition. Scans in photo quality so it looks just like the original picture. The 4 buttons on the front make for easy access to all scanner options. It can also scan directly to the web, printer, fax, or photo program. Overall a very good scanner with very good features

      Amazon.com Product Description

Tiny, yet full of digital photography power, the Minolta Dimage X20 is so small and light it can be slipped into a pocket or bag as easily as a wallet. It's the world's smallest and lightest 2-megapixel digital camera with 3x optical zoom (as of June, 2003). It also features an ultra-fast start-up time, movie mode with sound, and a built-in flash.

      Optics and Resolution
The Dimage X20 features a 2-megapixel resolution that produces images up to 1600 x 1200 pixels for prints up to 8 x 10 inches. Other resolution modes include 1280 x 960 and 640 x 480. Thanks to the unique folded optics design, the Dimage X20's distinctive, non-protruding 3x zoom lens technology keeps the X20 ultra-compact and thin. It also has a 4x digital zoom.

      Movie and Audio Modes
The XR (extended recording) movie mode enables you to capture as much video as will fit on your memory card. Video is captured with sound at 15 frames per second at resolutions of 320 x 240 and 160 x 120. You can also capture up to 15-second voice memos, or append a 15-second note to images.

      More Features
Capture images quickly and quietly with the X20's 1-second activation, 0.1-second shutter release time lag, and 0.2-second playback interval.

Minolta's new multi-frame drive mode allows you to capture nine action-stopping frames of a single event in one picture. The nine images are laid out in a 3 X 3 grid in a single frame.

The DiMAGE X20's e-mail copy function makes a 640 X 480 or 160 X 120 JPEG copy of an image on the memory card so that it can be easily transferred over the Internet.

      Other features include:

      Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards; an 8 MB SD card is included. When shooting in Standard 2-megapixel mode, you can store 12 images on the included memory card. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB 1.1, which means the camera can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

      Power and Size
The camera is powered by two AA batteries (alkalines included, rechargeable NiMH batteries recommended). It measures 3.39 x 2.64 x 0.93 inches and weighs 4.1 ounces (excluding battery).

      What's In The Box
This package includes the Dimage X20 digital camera, 8 MB Secure Digital memory card, two AA alkaline batteries, USB and AV cables, neck strap, and CD-ROM with Dimage Viewer software and USB drivers for Windows and Mac.

      3 out of 5 stars Works great!....When it works!.......2006-09-21

Bought this camera in September '03 and it was fantastic! I could put it in my jeans pocket and take it out with me everywhere on my travels. It took fantastic shots even in low light and the print quality was superior to some cameras even over 4 megapix. Disappointingly, it quit in the middle of my European Vacation in July '05 with a black screen that never went away. I can view the pix on the memory card but can't take any new pix.

Sadly it seems that this problem is par for this camera. It dies about 2 years later. Be Warned!

2 out of 5 stars From the minds of Minolta... on second thought... forget it........2006-09-12

This was a cute little camera... at first. But I really didn't think the zooming in nor the zooming out was good at all while using the pictoral. It was hard to get the thing to focus properly. When using the video portion of the camera, the zoom in feature was great. But when you zoomed out, the distance would decrease significantly. We have had ours for about 3 years, and now it makes a little flicker of a beep when you try to turn it on, but it will not operate.

If you're going to get a digital camera, make it a good one... stay away from this model.

1 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT SERVICE ADVISORY.......2006-01-18

In Feb 2004 I purchased this camera and was well pleased with it. However, by the end of 2005, the viewing screen suddenly went blank and would register no images although the rest of the camera (the menu, functions, modes and flash) were responding fine. I set it aside and finallly found a service advisory regarding this product and 150 other digital camera and camcorders thatt use image sensors manufactured by Sony's semiconductor group. The glue holding the CCD and wiring can decompose and disconnect the image sensor, causing distorted or no images. To request service for this model Konica Minolta, call toll free 1-888-473-2656 (I was unable to get through on this line repeatedly), or 1-201-574-4000. Tell them you know about the service advisory. They will email you a service form and ask you to send in the camera. I can't rate this product because I am just mailing my camera back tomorrow. Manufacturers are claiming they will repair the problem after the warranty period is ended.

Here is the website that describes the problem: http://davesgarden.com/place/t/552292/

Defective models were sold by Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fuji and Minolta.

1 out of 5 stars this camera is terrible.......2005-11-25

i bought this camera only a year ago, and its been acting up ever since.
      - the battery life sucks. the matteries will only stay full for not even 30 minutes.
      - the LCD screen sucks. its beginning to change different colors, and blur occasionally.
      - the zoom--- very blurry.
      - and just recently it deleted all my pictures.

i highly recommend not buying this product.

      2 out of 5 stars After a year an a half won't work.......2005-10-28

When I brought this camera it was great, cool pictures, the size and look of the camera wasn't disappointed at all, but I have now 1 year and 7 months with it and it hasn't been working since a couple of month, first it started with lines on the screen and now it's a black screen and won't take a picture. I brought this camera because a friend of mine had it and I liked it very much, after I purchased it, another person liked it and brought it also, and now has the same situation as me, (started with the lines, and now it just work work).

This camera its cool if you dont plan on having it for long, meaning, that you will upgrade it later, so if you want to have a cool, non expensive camara for about a year and a half, you can buy it.

      Amazon.com Product Description

Mintek's graceful, slim, and lightweight DTV-233 combination 23-inch widescreen LCD TV and full-function DVD player is suitable for placement anywhere in your home or office. DVDs slide easily into a side slot for space-efficient integration. Just 3.4 inches thick without its stand, you can even mount the DTV-233 on the wall, picture-style, using an optional wall-mount bracket. It's suitable for use as a PC monitor, too.

All DVD functions are accessible via the supplied remote control, and the unit plays DVD-Video, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 CD, MPEG-4 video, and JPEG digital photos stored on recordable CD. A combination SD (SecureDigital), MMC (MultiMediaCard), and Memory Stick memory-card reader is perfect for viewing your digital photos fresh out of your camera and right on the TV screen.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch "flyback" noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life (with no risk of image burn-in), space savings, and light weight/easy positioning. They also tend to be cheaper and, to some eyes, slightly more natural looking than their plasma flat-panel counterparts, which usually "spec" higher (higher brightness, higher contrast ratio).

The set offers 1,280 x 768 native pixel resolution with impressive ratings for both contrast (450:1) and brightness (450 cd/m2). Its wide-angle clarity extends 176 degrees vertically and horizontally, so the screen is easy to see from just about anywhere in the room. Mintek's Digital Pure Video Engine analyzes audio/video signals and ensures that the display reaches high-definition levels fast while addressing 6 key aspects of video: detail, color, contrast, dynamic (response time), brightness, and levels of shading.

The set's stereo speakers are driven by an ample 6 watts each. Connections include 1 each composite-video, high-definition component-video, coaxial RF, and VGA PC (15-pin D-Sub). The set also includes a USB interface for a direct digital connection with your digital camera and digital camcorder.

3 out of 5 stars Nice TV BUT..........2007-07-07

I have had this TV/DVD Player for about 1 1/2 years. Overall, it is a great TV...BUT...when i started having a problem with the DVD player, their first point contacts in Customer Service were nice & helpful...BUT...then when they couldn't help me anymore, they referred me to someone who could get it fixed or replaced for a fee (not covered under warranty anymore). THIS PERSON NEVER RETURNED ANY ONE OF THE 6 CALLS I LEFT...WHY???

Let me make sure that you know, it is a good TV & very functional except that you can't really change out the remote since most other remotes are not compatible with Mintek...BUT...i like the TV, it's just a shame that right now it is just sitting in my garage collecting dust.

1 out of 5 stars No Customer Service .......2007-05-29

DVD stopped working a week after warranty was up. No one ever answered the customer service line. Do not buy this TV....it is a waste of money; spend the extra money and buy one from a known brand with a customer service department

1 out of 5 stars Poor service, poor quality.......2005-12-23

This is the worst TV I have ever purchased in my life. Without using the remote, the unit goes into overdrive searching for the source it prefers -- tv, dvd, pc, etc. -- and you cannot watch television. When I have called to get help with this, I have been thwarted at every step. I would recommend that no one buys anything from this company.

      5 out of 5 stars what a great hdtv.......2005-10-16

I love it. I don't have the problem with the remote like other people. I do not use a universal remote. Its great. When I stick in a DVD, it turns off the TV tuner by itself. I can turn off the unit in the middle of a DVD and the next day, I can pick up on the DVD right where I left it just by turning it on. Very simple. Color and picture are great. Price is great. Have had no problems.

      1 out of 5 stars Defective.......2005-06-04

I ordered this tv but I had to return it the next day because it was defective. It wouldn't give me about a dozen of my channels. Instead it just flashed the picture, then turned all white with an asterisk showing on the side, and kept alternating between those two things. It was unwatchable.

I tried having it redo the channel search again. I noticed that when I clicked the up and down arrows, all those channels were skipped. It still didn't work.

I then plugged the cable wire into my old tv and it worked fine.

Another complaint that I have with this tv is that there were horizontal lines going up the screen. The instruction manual says that may happen if you have a radio in the room, not turned on, just in the room. Who doesn't have a radio in the room? My other tv doesn't have that problem.

Another complaint I have with this tv is that it foreshortened the faces on the screen. I changed a certain setting from "fill the screen" to "normal" and it seemed to fix that problem. It seems that it was stretching the window sideways, making everyone's head look wide and short. Then when I turned on the tv later, all the faces were foreshortened again. Sure enough, the tv had reset itself to "fill the screen". I changed it back and it seemed fine.

When I gave up on the tv, because of its inability to receive a lot of channels, I turned on my old tv and I appreciated the picture quality of the Mintek more. My old tv's picture really didn't look as good as the Mintek did. It makes me realize how artificial all these images are. We tend to think of them as being accurate but they are not.

I don't have high definition cable. I just have regular cable. That may have something to do with it. Maybe HDTV would at least get rid of the horizontal lines going up the screen.

I give Amazon 5 stars. I packed up the box, taped it up, brought it to a UPS store, and Amazon paid the postage and all. Amazon is giving me a full refund. I highly recommend shopping with Amazon. I have bought dozens of books and records, and various other things, through Amazon, and I have always been so pleased with the service that my first reaction is to buy everything on Amazon.

      Later ...

Revisiting this review, I see that someone gave my review a Thumbs Down. What idiot would do that? My tv was defective. It didn't pull in all the channels. Isn't this supposed to be a place where we share our experiences with the products we buy on Amazon? What kind of moron would give this report a Thumbs Down? My tv was defective, I'm telling you so, and I get booed for letting you know? Maybe the negative reviewer is a Mintek employee hired to occasionally scan the Amazon reviews. Something similar happened to me on Epinions when Delta Airlines let me down, and a Delta employee actually was hired to scan the Epinions reviews and defend his company.

5 out of 5 stars Rock solid and compatible w/ consumer DVD players.......2003-01-23

These are my disks of choice for DVD burning. I've been using them for about eight months and have never had a problem with the DVD burner (Pioneer DVR-104) or authoring software (Sonic DVDit! PE, Ulead DVD Workshop, Sonic MyDVD) in recognizing the disks. I can't say the same for some cheap, generic disks I've bought - they're coasters now. The Imation media is also easily recognized by my DVD players (Panasonic A120, Pioneer DV-353, and Apex 1100W).

(But note, if you pay more than three and change for these disks, then you're paying too much. And if you buy them from Office Depot, get in the car and go pick them up to avoid the excessive shipping/handling fees.)

      Amazon.com Product Description

With the Coolpix 880, Nikon has taken the 3.3-megapixel CCD and many of the advanced features from its semiprofessional 990 model and put them into a traditional compact point-and-shoot design simple enough for anyone to use.

The Nikkor all-glass lens features a 2.5x optical zoom (equivalent to 38- 95mm on a 35mm camera) with a macro mode that focuses down to 1.6 inches. A 4x digital zoom further increases magnification at lower resolutions. Images are stored on a Type I CompactFlash card (8 MB card included). Maximum image resolution is 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, and an uncompressed TIFF mode is available (remember, however, that uncompressed images are so large that you'll need a bigger memory card to store even one full-resolution uncompressed image).

Though the camera defaults to full-auto point-and-shoot mode, it has a host of manual features for advanced photographers. In addition, Nikon has included 11 special modes in which the camera is automatically programmed with the appropriate settings for specific situations like sunsets, beaches, night portraits, and extreme close-ups. For example, switch the camera to its party/indoor setting, and it will slow down the shutter and use a slow-synch flash with red-eye reduction.

The 880 is Nikon's smallest digital camera, with overall dimensions of only 3.9 by 3 by 2.1 inches, and weighs only 9.7 ounces without a battery.

Power is provided by either a disposable 2CR5 lithium battery (included) or an optional rechargeable lithium-ion battery. For environmental and economic reasons, we strongly recommend getting the rechargeable battery kit for anything more than occasional use.

Image transfer is quick and easy with the included USB cable. If you have an older computer with only a serial port, the Coolpix 880 also supports serial image transfer (though you'll need to purchase the serial cable separately). The camera ships with an impressive software suite that includes Genuine Fractals 2.0 LE for file compression and scaling, Cumulus 5.0 demo for image management, and Great Photo! for image manipulation and correction.

4 out of 5 stars Digital photography is fascinating.......2002-12-06

Having used this CP880 for about 2+ yrs, I've still on the learning curve and have only scratched the surface . Although most shots are quite good with the Auto sequence, it's nice to have flexibility with manual settings. Be prepared to buy the extras to make your digicam experience practical: 2 re-chargeable Li-ion batteries and the charger; upgrade to a 64 or better yet a 128 MB CF card with card reader (supplied with my Lexar 64 MB CF card. USB connectivity reader greatly expedites transfer of files to PC); optional digital wallet (Minds@work 3 GB portable HD for travel and downloading on the road); belt case (to keep the CP close by for those "once in a lifetime shots"). I'm familiar with many controls but the manual is a bit cumbersome. I'm now reviewing "Nikon Coolpix 880 Photography by Dan Curtin...to pick up more nuances. The CP4300 may be a more current version and deserves consideration. All in all, a great camera. My 1200 shots taken in Oregon,Washington,Vancouver, and Victoria were burned to CD's with relative ease thanks to my CP880 and peripherals. Some of my Butchart Gardens shots were spectacularly polarized courtesy of a hand-held 52 mm polarizing lense from my old 35 mm Nikorrmat!!

1 out of 5 stars manual lens cap removal very annoying.......2002-11-19

After 2 hears of removing the lens shade manually on my Nikon 880
I will never buy another Nikon product again. Up to now, I have not found any reference to this irritating procedure in the Nikon manuals, specifications, or camera sale's blurbs. The battery charger & rechargeable battery's extra cost & time to recharge the battery negates owning a digital camera that should provide fast & easy use. The ready light does not go off when the battery is charged. Time between captures is more like 3 seconds, not 1 second as stated

5 out of 5 stars one year old 880.......2001-12-13

I have had this camera one year and am still impressed with the quality of it's pictures. It certainly has some flaws ( flash pictures, noisy auto focus) but anyone who claims that this camera doesn't take fantastic pictures doesn't know how to use it or has a broken camera.

4 out of 5 stars Watch out for that tiny flash.......2001-12-11

I cannot say that this camera is bad but for the one year that I owned it, I keep wishing that I can attached a bigger and brighter flash for the indoor group shots. It does everything exceptionally well outdoor however, the indoor group shots is off the mark for insufficient flash... the pictures of group shot look dark and a bit out of focus on the outer edge. The lack of hot shoe and the lack of external flash terminal make indoor photographers, like myself, aching for more...

If you never have to do indoor photo of more than two or three persons in a groupd then it is a camera for you.

If you are serious, check out Canon G2 or Nikon 5000. Both has all you ever wanted in a digital camera.

4 out of 5 stars It's the extras that are costly..........2001-12-07

I am happy with the Nikon 880, however, I also purchased the battery charger, rechargeable batteries, 128 meg compact flash card, flash card reader, Adobe Photoshop Elements software, stepdown ring adapter for lens filters, slide copy adapter, photo glossy paper and textbook. I would also like to buy the Epson Stlus Photo 1280 printer, but that is for the future.
