Great Scanner!.......2003-05-06

I bought this scanner a couple of months ago and I've been very happy with it. Although it has some weak points the scanner itself is so good that you won't even notice it.

Good points:

- It's fast as long as you are not using 1200 or 2400 ppi. It really slows down on those resolutions when scanning in color.

- Great images. The photos scanned with the 5400c are sharp, crisp and vivid. Sometimes when you get an image which is too bright or too dark you can easily correct it from the driver.

- The installation is a breeze. There is an illustrated poster which helps you setup your scanner and in a couple of minutes you're ready to scan your image.

- The software is great. Although it lacks some advanced color settings I think is good enough for everyone. And I don't know why is Mike saying in his review that you cannot specify output format. In fact there are many formats that you can save to:

- tiff
- gif
- jpg
- bmp
- pdf
- html
- fpx
- pcx
- png

- rtf

- There is an option to send your results to MS WORD, Excel, Adobe photoshop, etc

WEAK POINTS:

- If you want to scan with 48 bit color mode you have to choose it every time from preferences setting - it's also rather hard to find it.

- slow on 1200 & 2400 ppi modes.

- no printed manual

- the ocr software is also not the best.

Great scanner for the price, NO trouble with ANYTHING.......2002-11-17

I have recently bought an entire new computer system: monitor, CPU, printer and scanner. I was interested in a lower model scanner at first until I was talked into buying this model. I have NEVER regretted this purchase. I am a photographer and have prints from just about everything that need cropping after being scanned and this scanner does the job well. Scan resolution on this is great and the print quality when it comes out is just as sharp. I couldn't ask for more:)

I Searched for a scanner with a [price limit] I seen them all and got this one. very easy to use, a nice bundle of software. "HP" did good with this one.

hp scanjet 5490.......2002-05-29

this model comes with the 25 page ADF and transparency adapter. The scanner is technically impressive -- when it works. I had to return the scanner itself 30 days after I purchased it, with only light usage-- and it was replaced with a remanufactured model. So far (30 days later) the scanner still seems to be working, but the ADF failed--was sent a new one--which never worked, and am now waiting for a third one.

Great Scanner, Horrible Software.......2002-02-27

I have tried many HP scanners over the past year. While all of them are very good mechanically wise, the software (HP Precisionscan and Pro) leave MUCH to be desired.

One point is the ability to have the scanner automatically detect regions. It's a great feature but if it detects a Color Photograph as black and white and you are in the middle of a batch scan job, expect to take about an extra minute or two for each one where that happens. There is no "Always output in color" selection, and there is no way to specify what kind of file you wish to have output (jpg, bmp, gif, etc.).

Another huge problem is the "Scan To" destination box. While in the help it says that there are "updates" to add more programs as destinations, I could not find a single reference to it on the hp.com site which the Help file referenced as where to find them. There is no simple way of adding destinations to this program and as such, you will find it extremely frustrating if you want to have it scanned into other than default destinations.

So if you are in the market for a good scanner with bad software, and only plan to scan into the pre-programmed into destinations (which are few and unhelpful) you MIGHT consider getting this scanner. Otherwise get an Epson or Microtek scanner...

Optics and Resolution
The Dimage Xi has a 3-megapixel sensor with a maximum resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, enough detail for photos from 4 by 6 inches to 11 by 14 inches. It also features a 3x optical zoom (equivalent to a 37-111mm on a 35mm camera) and a 4x digital zoom for a total 12x zoom.

So compact that I left it in my pocket and it went through the washer and dryer... doesn't work anymore (though I suspect its only the battery).

I was looking for a small camera that I could shove in a pocket and take wherever I went so that if a photo oportunity came about, I would have a camera ready. I was low on money, and found this camera refurbished. I read lots of reviews and compared this camera to other cameras with the same features. Buying this camera is definitely not a mistake! I have the basic case and an extra battery, and since the batteries only take about an hour and a half to charge I always have one ready when the battery in the camera dies (Which is usually after a full day of continuous photography).
The camera is incredible rugged, I have dropped it on more than one occasion, and it still works. Whether I am in school, at home, or pretty much anywhere, this I know that I am sure to get a good picture.
Now to adress some of the problems that people say this camera has:
1. anemic flash - Although the flash is a little wimpy, when you use it within about 12 feet of your subject it is fine.
2. picture quality - the picture quality is as good as any 3.2 megapixel camera. It just depends what setting you have it on. I always keep mine of the largest picture and fine quality(next level below tiff). If you are complaining about image quality, get a film camera, and wait until digital cameras get better. Film is the equivalent of about 15-20 megapixels.
3. 16 megabyte card - duh, you can't get many pictures on here that are even somewhat decent in quality. No matter what camera you buy, you will still have to buy a larger card if you want a good amount of pictures. I have a 256 megabyte card that holds 160 pictures on fine and about 38 in tiff mode.
4. Finger in the picture - yeah, I agree that if you have big hands this can become a problem. The best way to hold this camera, is to use the controls and take the picture with your right hand and hold the bottom left hand corner of the camera with your left hand to steady it.
5. this camera is not for professionals - I agree. If you want all the controls of a manually controlled camera, keep looking, however, the autofocus does do a nice job, and I don't understand why a camera with more things to adjust would be better for snapshots and and active lifestyle.
All in all, this camera is truly one of the most handy electronic gadgets that I can think of and I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CAMERA TO ANYONE.

Best Daytime pictures.......2004-02-25

Overall this camera takes very good pictures and it is very compact. The only downside if any is when taking pictures in low light. Using flash the image is slightly underexposed and clor balance slightly off(can be easily corrected digitally later). In low light there is some noise at max resolution. If the image size is reduced to 2MP this noise is not seen but it reduces the resolution.
Overall very satisfied with the camera. I have also used a1000mA AC adapter at 4.5V to power it and it works fine.

Believe it or not.. I left the camera in the pocket of my shorts (it is soooo compact), and sent it through the complete wash cycle int he washer. To my complete amazement, the camera (including the battery and memory card) worked perfectly (after I let it dry for a day).

As another reviewer already noted, this camera is easily damaged by sand. Its much touted "internal folded zoom lens" has a number of small plastic gears that are exposed internally in its aluminum case. The case is not well sealed, so sand can get in there easily. And a few grains is all that takes to hose it. I took mine on my last vacation, and although I never actually took it to beach, a few sand specks in my pocket made their way into the camera. Took it apart and used compressed air to try to clean it, but no luck. What is the point of a miniature camera that must be stored in a hermetic case or bag?

I own this product and have used it for 1 month. Product finish and quality is good. I bought it to use with our home phone with 2.5mm plug jack. For the headset user the sound is very good. For the other person the headset user's voice is too far away - but still audible. (They always can tell when you are using it). No way to adjust mic or headset volume.

Excellent sound quality. Noise cancellation really works. The button on the headset string lets you automatically place a call and end the call. Very nice. Works much better and more reliably than ANY BlueTooth set I've tried - and I've tried almost all of them.

My daughter got me this for mother's day, didn't keep the receipt or it would have been returned. Impossible to use, you can't understand what anyone says it is so fuzzy sounding. The answer button doesn't work. And yes, my phone settings are correct.

Programming instructions provided reference an expired manual. The new manual has changed page numbers, equations, and equation forms making this program guide useless.

The technical support number provided is a fax number and the email address is returned as undeliverable.

Amazon should be ashamed.

Avoid this Product, poor reliability x4.......2003-11-04

I have 4 of these phones, all have failed within 14 months of purchase. They all seam to have lost communication with their base. No signal to or from headset. Replaced all 4 with Panasonic phones with great results.
Also, the IBM 3455 has very low maximum volume, sound not amplified enough to hear clearly even on the highest setting. all 4 phones were identical.
Found no support so far from IBM online so far as far as any recalls or known repairs. I guess they are bound for the trash.

This phone is awful........2002-08-14

We've had this phone for about six months now. I dread using it. I'll walk clear across the house to pick up another phone even if this phone is directly in front of me. Clarity on this phone is non-existent. If I am forced to use this phone, I can barely hear the caller, even on the highest volume setting; I always end up screaming at the caller to speak up, then they hang up on me. I have the same problems every time I use this phone. I HATE IT.

good value for the price.......2002-07-29

Reception is very good. I had no problems with call waiting & caller ID. However, you cannot edit the phone book. If you want to change a stored number, you have to delete it then reenter all the information. But for a basic caller ID display phone with good reception, which is what I wanted, I'm happy--especially since I got the phone from a discounter.

Expected more from IBM........2002-06-17

There is no way to turn off auto-answer. If the phone is in the cradle when it rings, you have to pick it up to see the caller ID. When you pick it up, it answers the phone automatically making caller ID useless.

Sound quality, both receiving and sending is very poor. Makes me think I am using a cheap cell phone. Have used $9 phones that sounded better.

Invest your money in a different brand.

I've had multiple cordless phones over the years, and this has turned out to be by far the best at the best price. Most of my other phones didn't have sufficient volume control for me to hear the caller on the other end. The clarity of this phone is great. I have also found the headset volume and clarity to be good as well. You must read the directions and make sure you do not place it near other electronic equipment, especially a microwave. It is susceptible to interference (as was every other cell phone I've had). Once I moved it, it has performed fabulously. It is light and very easy to program and add numbers. It is also very nice to be able to block ringing of unavailable and private calls.
