Amazon.com Product Description

Work faster and more productively with the special edition HP L2005US notebook PC. You'll also be helping the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF). With your purchase, $50 from each HP L2000 notebook goes to the LAF. The LAF provides the practical tools and information that people living with cancer need to live strong. Jointly developed by HP and processor manufacturer AMD, the L2005US features LIVE STRONG on the cover and a reproduction of Lance Armstrong's autograph. Each purchase includes a yellow LIVE STRONG wristband and yellow stereo ear bud headphones with in-line volume control. LIVESTRONG wristbands represent unity in the battle against cancer and hope for all those who are living with cancer.

The HP L2005US features AMD Turion 64 ML-30 Mobile Technology, which will handle all you can throw at it today and will be ready for the coming onslaught of applications that will take advantage of 64-bit processing technology. Supremely mobile, it weighs just over 5 pounds and has a BrightView 14-inch display--which provides improved viewing in direct sunlight. Other features include an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), dual-layer, multiformat DVD writer, built-in 54g wireless connectivity with 125HSM SpeedBooster, 128 MB of shared video RAM, and Windows XP Professional.

In addition to the $50 that the LAF will receive from each notebook, AMD and HP plan to donate notebooks for use in LAF-funded cancer survivorship centers throughout the United States. In addition, the two companies are inviting you to join them in the support of the Lance Armstrong Foundation by matching or exceeding the $50 per unit for the LAF.

AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology
Combining strong performance with efficient usage of power, the 1.6 GHz AMD Turion 64 ML-30 is uniquely optimized to power today's thinnest notebooks. It's also built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. It includes such AMD technology features as HyperTransport (which increases the communication between integrated circuits), PowerNow! (which enables longer battery life and reduced heat generation), and Enhanced Virus Protection (which works with Windows XP Service Pack 2 to better withstand attacks from certain classes of viruses). It also features a 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)

The Basics

Screen, Graphics and Sound
While the L2005US's screen is actually as wide as standard 15-inch displays, the high-definition, widescreen 14-inch display (1280 x 768-pixel resolution) has the same form factor as a 12-inch screen--taking up less space on your desk. Even more impressive, its high resolution provides 25% more information than standard 15-inch XGA displays. This BrightView screen also provides a 20 percent brighter screen for better definition and 33 percent wider viewing angle for more accurate, off-center viewing. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3D graphics. It has 128 MB of shared video RAM, which uses the notebook's main memory. It also features 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible audio and internal speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The L2005US has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. The 125 HSM/SpeedBooster support will enable it to be ready for tomorrow's 125 Mbps wireless LANs. You get a decent offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and Firewire:

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Professional Edition (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features) with Service Pack 2 featuring Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. Other preloaded software includes Sonic Digital Media Studio, InterVideo WinDVD Player, Microsoft Zones.com, Apple iTunes and Apple iTunes Music Store, Adobe PhotoShop Album, Muvee AutoProducer DVD Edition with Burning, Microsoft Works, Microsoft Money, Microsoft MSN Encarta Plus, and Microsoft Office 2003 Student and Teacher Edition (60 day trial version).

Dimensions and Weight
Nice and light, this notebook weighs just 5.33 pounds and measures 13.15 x 9.1 x 1.29 inches.

Power
It's powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which has a battery life of up to 3 hours (depending on usage).

What's in the Box
This package contains the L2005US notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, printed operating instructions, zippered bag, yellow earbud headphones, and yellow LIVE STRONG wristband. LIVE STRONG wristbands represent unity in the battle against cancer and hope for all those who are living with cancer. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty, 1-year free technical support, and 30-day free software support.

5 out of 5 stars Fast as Lance himself.......2007-07-30

I researched laptops for quite awhile before settling with this computer. I couldn't be happier with my first laptop! I've had it for a year and a half and I still love it. My only wish is that the battery lasted longer. I can get about two hours out of it if I'm lucky. The computer does get warm after running it for awhile, but not uncomfortably hot. My fan is not loud. I bought it for speed and I am completely satisfied with the speed. The mousepad and scroll bar are easy to use. The keyboard is large and easy to type on. The screen is also big. The notebook itself is very sturdy. I also am happy to be supporting a cause with my purchase. The yellow LIVESTRONG accents are nice.
I would highly recommend this as a gaming, websurfing or word processing computer.

4 out of 5 stars it is durable.......2007-07-03

I bought this laptop two years ago. Till now it is works very well although startup is a little bit low (from the day i bought it). Overall i like it.

1 out of 5 stars Why Lance Why?.......2007-01-25

I can't believe Lance loaned his name out to such an inferior product.

I bought this laptop because it was fairly cheap and did what I needed it to in order to do school work. Apparently I didn't need this hunk of junk to actually Boot up. When I first got the laptop every other time I turned it on I would receive Kernel errors and have to reboot the computer and wait about 30 minutes while it ran a scandisk.

After a while I got fed up and re-installed Windows...Same things started happenning. Contact HP support via Internet of course because I could never find their help number and they had me flash the motherboard with a new Bios. Did that and laptop worked great for about a week.

I decided Windows was bad so I installed a Linux based OS..Which worked great...Until I left it unplugged for a while...Now Laptop is giving me more errors. Oh happy days.

Laptop makes a great door-stop though.

1 out of 5 stars HP Sucks.......2006-08-29

HP has the WORST customer service of any company of any kind that I have ever dealt with. I have never called without having spent at least one hour on the phone with them before the various extensions in India, none of whom are helpful. And once the service is complete the computer is usually returned with more problems than they were origionally sent with. I would never buy another HP again.

3 out of 5 stars Computer vs Tech Support.......2006-07-01

After skimming through the other reviews I have to aggree with most of them. The notebook was fast and more than adequate for school. It played DVDs well and accepts aftermarket software to its nice memory space without slowing down performance.
On the downside... It DID get very hot from use and the battery life was very very short. Even after reconditioning the battery a few times it only gained a marginal increase in battery life. It doesn't handle gaming very well. The frame rate was ridiculously slow if a lot is going on in the game and the loading times were exceptionally long. But, nobody ever said this was a gaming computer and it isn't the reason I bought the thing.
For my conversion from desktop to notebook, I was happy with the decision. I only wish I hadn't bought it so soon after it entered the market as I paid top dollar not knowing that the depreciation over one single year was 50% of the original cost.
Don't get me started on the customer service. Absolutely worthless and time-consuming to tackle. All I can say is don't hold your breath for them to "give you a call sometime" to resolve any issues or get some information to you. Whatever you do while on the phone with CS, don't trashtalk any species of the bovine pursuasion.

Very Happy with the computer but not with the service!!!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars What happens after 6 months.......2006-05-31

I got this notebook last fall and was quite happy with it - for a reasonable price the configuration you get is much more better than the competitive laptops. I was thinking that this is a good deal that cannot be true - and I was right.

After half a year, now I clearly see the many SERIOUS disadvantages which are caused by LOWER QUALITY:

- it gets HOT - if you plan to work with a laptop on your lap (what of course is quite often), after a while it becames REALLY HOT and impossible to work with. You MUST put it away from your legs because you cannot stand the heat. And this happens EVERY TIME! Right now as well, you would never believe how bad it makes you feel - almost impossible to work with!

- LOW BATTERY LIFETIME - when the laptop was new, I got about 2-2.5 hours of lifetime. Now it stays for 1 hour!!! After a clean installation of OS, it is still 1 hour. Unbelievable when I consider that my friend with old ASUS laptop with INTEL mobile processor gets 3 hours at least. I am quite sorry but I have to admit that AMD really cannot do the same job in processors for notebooks. All marketing talks about TURION as the new "mobile" 64-bit processor of AMD that offers advantages for notebook users were just TRASH. Now I feel so ashamed because I am the only one that must recharge after one hour of working when working at school group projects.

- DVD ROM PROBLEMS - I have so much trouble reading DVD movies (even original new dvd movie sometime cannot be read and DVD stops playing) and writing DVD disks (errors and ruined blank medium), there is apparenty something wrong with this line of DVD-ROMs in the notebook because when looking for help on the Internet, I found that I am not the only one with those trouble! Plus, the new drivers that could maybe solve this problems were never made (TSSTCorp TS-L532R)- there is NO SUPPORT. And double layer writing? Don't even think it could work!!!!

- the plastic cover of the screen is cracked on two spots (right next to hinges). First I thought that I dropped the notebook somewhere and I don't remember, but the cracks look really specifically to be done from material stress - which does not come from falling on the ground or bad manipulation but solely from regularly opening the laptop!!! The material is just cheap and not designed to last for a long time.

If I were to choose now, I would prefer to pay a bit more or to pay the same price for worse configuratuion - because the real truth is that the quality of Livestrong is not really great. The worst thing is AMD TURION PROCESSOR - absolute disaster to choose for your laptop! I have always preffered AMD over INTEL but now I see that the quality gap is still very very considerable.

4 out of 5 stars Cost-efficient solution.......2006-05-12

I bought this notebook a few months ago, and I have to say that I love it. I carry it back and forth to work regularly and she's holding up well. She's pretty speedy, except my iTunes sucks up a TON of memory which slows everything down. I think it's an issue with iTunes, not the laptop.

I love the ports on both sides. Built in ethernet and wireless ports provide great access to the internet (with a service provider, of course!)

I have had a few minor issues, though. One is RAM. I didn't realize that the 512 MB RAM would be shared with the video RAM. Effectively, that has reduced the total amount of useable RAM. Memory-intensive programs (ex. Illustrator or Photoshop) cannot be installed without upgrading. Bigger programs (including PowerPoint) tend to run slowly, especially during multi-tasking or working on the Internet. Everyone has mentioned that the laptop generates a LOT of heat and that the battery is pretty weak (though almost every laptop comes with a 6-cell these days).

Overall, this is far better than I could have expected for the price. I will upgrade the RAM soon, though, for my personal needs.

4 out of 5 stars Not a laptop expert but quite a deal.......2006-03-23

This laptop was quite a good buy for its price. I liked the fact that I got an 80 GB hard drive and DL DVD burner and the overall price of the laptop was under[...](after rebate of course). It was also great to get Radeon Xpress 200M instead of the usual Intel Extreme Graphics on other laptops. There were some things I wished were better in this laptop. The standard 6 cell battery could only last a little under 2 hours, which made taking notes in class a tricky proposition unless I plugged it into an outlet. Also, for some strange reason, the iTunes that came pre-installed on the laptop failed to launch no matter how many times I uninstall and reinstall (I don't think anyone else would have this problem). The laptop also could get hot quite quickly, but not a problem if you prop up the laptop. Overall, this was a great buy for me and I believe everyone would enjoy it

4 out of 5 stars this one's worth a buy !!.......2006-03-01

I am a student and i have very limited options in terms of how much i can afford to buy a laptop....i came across this piece HP special edition L2105NR, and i went ahead tentatively and bought it for about 900$.
And i was more than happy after i used this one for about a month now.it's got a very good processor in the making (AMD turion-64),which seems very fast, though it could generate quite a bit of heat.one more thing whic i liked about it is its mobility,it weighs around 5.4 lbs which for sure is an added advantage, and it catches up wireless networks pretty good.and I love the keypad which comes with this piece.
as far as i could see,the disadvantage of this is the heat which it generates when you work for long hours.
but otherwise i feel this piece is worth a buy.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente Maquina.......2006-02-17

4 out of 5 stars A gem, not a flawless gem, but a gem.......2007-04-01

I have had this scanner for about a year. I've scanned over 20,000 pages (it counts for you). It has had some quirks, but rarely jams even with odd sizes. It scans the smallest receipts even (even smaller than its rated minimum spec, smaller than a business card), once you figure out where the tab is that senses the paper in the feed. It scans at the rated speed for me, really nice.

The quirks are more software related than hardware. For example, if there is a misfeed, again which is really rare, but when it does happen, sometimes the paperport program freezes, locking up my whole computer and I have to reboot the scanner to get it going again. Another software quirk that has been corrected: It has this great feature to autocrop to actual page sizes, which is very efficient to use because saved file size is directly related to scan dimensions. But when I first got it, this feature had a bug, so that it would only autocrop the first page of a batch; the following pages were not cropped, which made the feature nearly useless for multipage docs. This has been beautifully corrected with a driver update; now you can autocrop a batch of off-sized pages, whether they are all the same off-size, or all different sized. Super.

There is a lot of software that comes with this scanner, and none of it is the latest. In fact, the scanner has been out a couple of years, and I think it's still shipping with the same software as before, and it was not the latest when the scanner was first released. Some of the software is redundant, and some of it seems to have a high learning curve, and there is not really any guidance as to why you would use certain programs rather than others. Trial and error with them is frustrating. That being said, the software that I use the most with it, Paperport9, works beautifully and suits my needs. I scan everything to directly to searchable pdfs, occasionally move docs to MS Word for editing, and this one little machine has changed my whole approach to document handling. It's pretty small, and I keep it right on my desk in easy reach. The first place every single sheet of paper goes is in into the scanner, and is scanned directly to the computer "folder" where it belongs. I love it.

I'm looking now for a second one so I can do off site scanning. I thought maybe this model would cost less now and/or there would be a better one out. But I've looked hard and this is still the best choice in this price range, even though the street price seems to have actually gone up! What other piece of office electronic equipment has actually increased in price for the same model in the last 2 years? I guess I'm not the only who likes it.

I was glad see the prior reviewer returned his scanner and updated the review positively after receiving a replacement scanner. Looks like he got a lemon, but all is fine now.

1 out of 5 stars Unfortunate piece of frustrating junk...until the new scanner came.......2006-04-28

It worked for a little while with only one paper jam per 3 scans. Now it is almost every single scan when a piece of paper jams. There is no rhyme or reason behind the paper jams (or at least I can find no pattern). I called Customer Support (which is only open until 4 PM PT) and they suggested replacing the Snap-In pad module and updating to the latest drivers. Done and done. No change. Now I need to go through the process of returning the scanner.

When it worked, it was amazing. The problem has always been that I cannot leave the scanner alone due to the high potential of paper jams. Also, when the paper jams occur, the scanner easily feeds all the papers waiting to be scanned through the scanner. Why can it not do that the first, second, third or tenth time, and have the paper scanned and not jammed?

Also, it appears that the Kofax software is simply trial software. Why include such a nice product without stating it is trial software? Why include it at all?

Lastly, and maybe the most frustrating, when paper jams, there is no way to recover the pages which have already been scanned; consequently, the entire scan needs to be redone--but of course, it will result in a paper jam 100% of the time. Yes, when the scanner jams once, it will jam again with the same papers to be scanned 100% of the time, no matter how many ways I change the way the paper is scanned.

I will return to this review when the return process is over and update it.

OK, it is May 16, 2006 and I have gone through the process of returning my scanner and getting a new one from Xerox. I change my mind and give this product 5 STARS!

So I told you I would be back to review this item after returning it and seeing how the new DM262 works.

I went to a UPS Store and had them pack and ship the scanner. It was received by Xerox on a Wednesday and I received back a new scanner (they do not have any refurbished models for this scanner, Customer Service said) on Friday of the same week. Amazingly fast.

The new scanner has no problems scanning. In fact, I missed taking out a staple from one stack of papers and an error was registered with the scanner, but it just kept scanning and pushing through the papers. In about 30-40 minutes of scanning (that is, me loading and unloading the scanner and the scanner scanning), I scanned more than 1,000 pages.

Also, I called Customer Service and they told me that the Kofax Software is not the trial--it is the full product and will not expire.

Every time I have called Customer Service, they have been respectful and helpful.

For all the above, I have changed my mind on the DM262 scanner.
