Pros:
plays mp3, wave, midi, kar and other format files; has composer mode; records (selectable resolution) via mic input

Cons:
No external power supply connector, eats batteries. PC software has a few bugs, don't know about the Mac s/w. Needs more generic styles than just the x-hop, mod stuff; i.e. rock, jazz, blues, pop, etc. Needs a better GUI for the "hiway/dj" mode. Fine for non-musicians, but lame if you want real control. A midi/grid type editor would be real cool. Also the headset-mic is junk, but it demos the possibilities. Last, I can't get the unit to use more than 32MB of a 128MB SmartMedia card. Tech support is good so far, but we're still working on it. As usual, most companies will or can not come out and tell you what the bugs are.

Still a way cool product, despite my cons list. I have a hunch they'll fix most of these issues.

Iýve had my MadPlayer since Christmas and I just downloaded the free firmware upgrade. Now everything is easy. You could do it all before, but it took other cables, and playing it into your computer sound card. But now I can make original songs and then play them right to my hard drive through the USB cable, or I can even convert them to wav files right on MadPlayer. I make movies, and what I bought it for was to make soundtracks for my films. You can show films with pirated music in them for very local festivals. But once you try get serious they wonýt even consider your film unless you have signed releases for every piece of music thatýs in itýand you canýt get releases, you have to pay. Not with my budget!
I have made amazing songs, or I guess a lot of them you would call musical interludes, for all kinds of film situations. Iýve even created all of my sound effects on the player, sometimes just by isolating one track, like the bass, and slowing it way down, and sometime by recording sounds into the MadPlayer and then using the special effects to change or edit the sound. Whatýs really crazy, and I had never even thought of it at the start, but when I make a feature length film I could even make a soundtrack CD and sell it at the festivals, because I can copyright all the music I make with MadPlayer. My first product tie in!
I canýt say enough about it. Even though Iým not trying to make ýsongsý with it, that you would sing or rap over, or for dancing, I have generated dozens really hot beats that Iýve burned to a CD just to keep. I think thereýs a film there, too, and I just donýt know what it will be about yet.
I have done one other thing with it thatýs worth mentioning. Iýve brought it on trips in my car, playing it through the cassette deck with an adapter. I filled the whole card with Karaoke files I got off the net. My daughter does not like to travel. But she and my wife sang karaoke from NYC all the way to Philadelphia, and it was the best trip weýve ever taken. If youýve got kids, and youýve lived through one those nightmare drives, you know what I mean. I donýt think anyone not related to them would want to hear them sing ýShake your body, do the congaý (I donýt know the title) but it sure beat all the yelling and whining that most of our drives usually end up as.

When I got my MadPlayer, I wasn't really sure if it would live up to the hype on the box, but I found out fast that this little unit really DOES MORE than they say it can. It lets me create my own CD-quality songs, and I may not win a Grammy with them, but they sound real good to me. I even put the CD of Madsongs I made (I love that I can burn my own MadCDs...) on my stereo when my friends came over, and they wanted to know where I got the hot trax. They didn't believe me when I said I made them, but then I showed them my MadPlayer and made a song, right there on the spot with it, and now they all want one, too. That was a while ago, and since then I really got into all the stuff you can do wiht the MadPlayer (I needed to get with the Manual for that, and that was definitely worth the study!) Now that I got the free upgrades off the MadWaves' web site, it's even easier for me to make music, cause now with what I learned and with the upgrades I can record my vocals and sounds and stuff in real time, burn them to my hard drive, and lots of other cool stuff. I'll never be a professional musician, but with MadPlayer I don't need to be because me and my friends think MadPlayer already makes me sound like one.

Simply this a toy.. its great for kids to fiddle around with. But first the sound quilty its terrible it nothing like the samples I heard on the site groovebox. So that was quite the lie and the wma. files you hear were proably never made on madplayer. There is no option that I saw that turned you mad songs to mp3 wav or wma, you could convert them to midi songs yes but you can't convert midi songs to mad songs. They say you can acsess the GM of madplayer in a DEMO of a program called sonar. I for one thought the program was confusing and it didn't work no matter what midi device I picked madplayer or my audigy. There is no documentation on how to use sonar in conjunction with madplayer and to top it off you must buy sonar.Cause like I said it is just a demo.. This platform is for people with no musical talent and never will you be able to sell these mad songs. See it composes by pre programed patterns and melodies and all you do is change the patterns and sounds to create unique songs. Which really arn't that unique because they all are formed on the same basic formula of the man/woman men/women who made these melodies and patterns. So like I say this is a toy. Not a seroius way to create music for professional reasons or to sell, for fame or what ever your drive to write music is. Once I relized the truth about this product I smashed it to pieces and threw its messy corpse across the room in a fit of anger for I have relized that I have been lied too about the capabilties of this machine. I feal so stupid now I bought a toy.. Sigh. Don't make my mistake.

This is a product that keeps getting better and better with each upgrade that the company posts on its website for free. The last update turned it into a whole new product by letting me record my voice in realtime over the music and save on the smart media card. It is now as close to a portable recording studio as one can get. I am into making beats and rhyming over with my teenagers and with this product it is now so easy to do. Why am I writing a review, because my kids can not put it down long enough to write one on their own. We are talking of getting another one for an upcoming birthday present.

Skip this one and get either: Kodak Royal Gold 400 or Fuji Superia 400. If you settle for this film you are going to possibly compromise your photo shot.

Delightful exposures from the leader in film! Kodak!.......2001-02-07

This is the film I buy whenever I'm out. My exposures always return crystal-clear! The blue-green color of my stuffed walrus is particularly well-served by Kodak's masterful Gold Max 400 film. I'm also fond of Kodak's 110 film, but due to the nature of that format, my pictures were much dimmer. After the switch to 400, whoa! Watch out! What a vivid walrus!

When I first started doing more serious photography, I went to this old and time-tested reserve, Kodak Max 400. The results, I'm sad to say, were a bit disappointing. The pictures were just too grainy (too many apparent dots in the photo). If you don't know what alternatives are available, it is good enough for your typical snapshot, but I think all of us can do a little better.

As you are probably aware, film comes in various "speeds," which allow you to shoot in differing light conditions. The higher the number, the less light needed. Thus, 100 film often requires bright outdoor sunlight, whereas 400 and 800 film is used for indoor or "high speed" (sports) photography. The problem with high-speed film, however, is that it is grainy. In order to get the film to react more quickly to light, the film needs to use larger silver crystals. Result? Your pictures will tend to be comprised of "dots" rather than smoother blends of color.

Despite improvements from 400 and 800 films of the past, Kodak's current low-end consumer film (i.e. Kodak Max) still suffers from excessive graininess. With everyone switching to 4x6 and 5x7 prints nowadays, pictures shot on these low-end consumer films will often still show "dots" when observed up close. If you want pictures to be treasured for years to come, do you really want dots?

The solution I found was Kodak's Royal Gold series, and Amazon to my delight recently started carrying this line of film. Unlike Max 400, Royal Gold 400 has a remarkably small grain size, offering you the best of both worlds -- sharpness and speed. It is a real shame that more consumers don't know about Kodak's Royal Gold line of film. I would expect that most people normally buy the Gold (low speed 100 or 200) or Max (high speed 400 or 800) series of film simply because it is the only type of film sold in nonspecialty stores. If you are a beginner, this film is perect for you, however if you are and advancing student or professional you should probably opt for a more proffesional film, such as: FujiColor NPS 160 Professional, or Kodak Tri-X Black and white film.

After taking pictures in Africa, Turkey, Greece, Alaska, and many other places, I've learned (sometimes the hard way) to take film seriously. A great camera will still take muddy pictures if the film quality is questionable.

I recently loaded this Kodak Gold Max 400 film into a new camera to take a test roll before another trip, and was surprised by the wonderful color quality of the returned pictures. A second test roll, taken of brightly-colored holiday decorations, came back excellent as well.

Now, if Amazon would only sell it in 10-packs, I'd be happy...

Best Traditional Moderate High Speed Black and White Film.......2004-08-15

For me Ilford HP-5 Plus is the best all around high speed black and white film with respect to contrast and resolution, not counting TMAX grain (or equivalent) versions such as Kodak's TMAX 400 and Ilford's Delta 400. The only other film which matches the tonal range obtained by Ilford HP-5 is Agfa's Agfapan 400, but the latter film is a bit more expensive. I've gone back to experimenting with Kodak's reliable Tri-X 400, but Ilford HP-5 Plus still wins, perhaps due to the fact that it contains more silver in its emulsion than Kodak's. Furthermore it is the most forgiving of film with respect to being processed in a variety of film developers, such as Kodak's D-76, and can easily be pushed one stop without losing much of its contrast and resolution. If you are looking for a universal moderate high speed film, then Ilford HP-5 Plus is the one to acquire.
