Does the job after practice.......2007-09-12
I actually bought the IRISPen Express when I read the special price offered in the October issue of PCWorld. It was $30 off the retail price of $130 if you went to the link shown in the ad.If I had read the reviews here before I ordered, I might have had reservations about my decision.
It arrived in only a couple of days....the first big surprise. I opened the box and did exactly as the instructions said on loading the software first before plugging in the pen reader into the USB slot. What I got was no power to the pen when I tired to calibrate. I then read in the installed instruction manual that USB slots in the front of many computers do not give a good connection to power and to try one in the back of the PC. That worked!!!
After doing some test scans, I tried a few lines out of books and magazines. The results was not perfect, but I feel it does a good job after practice and doing what I see others mentioned; using a flat surface, having consistant light and keeping the pointer inline with the text when scanning.
I don't recommend more than one cup of coffee before doing many scans. A shaky hand can have an affect on the quality. On books when you get near the middle of a page that isn't flat can produce unreliable OCR as well.
The IRISPen works as advertised........2007-08-31
The IRISPen works as advertised. I am currently reading for my PhD comprehensive exam and I use the pen to lift quotes from the books I am reading. I am careful to calibrate the pen with each new book and each new lighting environment (i.e. when going from my desk to the couch, from daylight to desk lamp, from home to office, and vice versa). It only works well if the page I am scanning is held flat on a solid surface. It works with near 100% accuracy on hardcover books but does a terrible job if I just hold a softcover book on my laps, I can't imagine trying that on a magazine; hard and flat is key. When used carefully the IRISPen is a huge time saver. My only regret is that I discovered this gadget after I was halfway through my readings and my notes on the first 20 books where taken by hand.
iris pen.......2007-08-29
it doesn't pick up the data very quickly and is very sensitive to how the lighting is in the room/on my desk. It almost isn't functional in my office space (which has lots of shadows as it has dark wook walls/ceiling.
Terrible. Just terrible........2007-07-26
This product was a waste of my money. After spending countless hours playing with it, re-reading the instructions, making adjustments, etc., my text still looks like this:
My,,,asd][asd,]asdlasfkasdlas]fkwetrbgksg eklg kgwlsfdv ../.zxcv.svd ./v.. sd/>CV>
Save yourself the money.
Almost useless.......2007-06-19
The performance of this scanner is execrable. On RARE occasions, it surprises you with a perfect scan of an entire line of text. On the other 24 scans, the quality ranges from totally garbled (not one character correct) to its "high quality" of text requiring a minimum of 5 corrections per line.
The only possible justification for buying this pen scanner is to use with a notebook in a library where a copier or flatbed scanner isn't available. Even then, be prepared to scan each line 5 or 6 times to get a usable entry (which will still contain errors).
I gave this product 1 star because that's the lowest option. It deserves a zero or lower.
The two 5-star ratings above can ONLY have been given by ringers, in my opinion.

Not for Macs.......2007-09-01
I read a review for IRISPEN EXPRESS in the NY Times in Aug 07 that was the best of the 3 pens that would read the print on paper and then put it on your computer. I sent for it but I could not use it since it waorked only with Windows and not with a Mac. I wanted to return it but I could not get the return merchandise number from their shipper though I asked for it twice.
Consequently I can not tell you anything about the product but I would warn customers of Amazon that the shipper of this product will not accept returns, I have told Amazon of this difficulty but have not received a response. This is the first time Amazon has failed me

Customer Reviews:
Amazing handheld scanner.......2005-10-02
Wanted something portable in a scanner for those ocassions away from home and the IrisPen fills the bill. Slower than a flatbed scanner but fantastic performance for such a small portable device. It set up easily, came with a printed manual and performed accurately on my first scan. I'm very pleased with it.
Pen Dead on Arrival; Worse Customer Service.......2005-05-04
Software loaded OK, but scanner pen failed to be recognized by the software on all of the five USB ports on my emac and ibook.
So I called customer service and spoke to some guy named "Jessie." I told him about the scanner pen, he asked for the pen batch#, and said, well, you can return it to Amazon or I can send you a new pen. I'm a patient guy, I wanted to give the product a fair shot, so I asked for a new one. It never arrived, and I even called three weeks later and some other guy said, oh yeah, that pen will arrive today. It never arrived. Nothing like customer service types who will lie in order to get you off the phone.
The only good news here is that Amazon accepted my return and gave me a full refund. So if only IRIS could emulate Amazon's customer service philosophy, maybe they'd sell a few more pens, instead of antagonizing once interested customers.
Maybe I'll try the C-Pen next.

Amazon.com Product Description
Help manage labor-intensive typing and note taking--you've found the IRISPen Express handheld scanner. It's no more difficult to use than a highlighter, and its about the same size, too. Just run the scanner steadily over the text you want to transfer into your computer. Two buttons on the side of the pen are easily programmable to match keyboard functions.
Grayscale scanning is designed for precisely legible text, with impressive speeds; the Pen Express reads at about 1,000 characters or 3.15 inches per second, and can also scan simple logos and headlines. Fonts are irrelevant, as long as the size is between 6 and 22 pt. It's designed to work with 55 different languages, and the interface is translated into French, English, Spanish, Dutch, German, and Italian.
Power is received from your PC via a USB cable, which is both an advantage and a disadvantage--you won't have to worry about charging or replacing a battery, but you can't use the scanner by itself either. The unit functions on both Windows and Macintosh platforms. IRIS includes a six-month warranty.
Customer Reviews:
Simple and Fast.......2006-03-04
The pen is somewhat awkward to hold but once you get used to it, then everything is a breeze. Recognition is good (not perfect) and integration with MS Word is seamless. Overall good product.
Perfect Product - nothing less...!.......2006-02-17
I used the IRIS Pen to scan all the printed text-media I gathered from work last year (about 300 pages of valuable data), in order to put it on a CD rather than having it in form of a huge pile of paper...it took me only 3days! Typing all of that information myself would have been a task unable to finish without this product.
Completely disatisfied..........2005-07-07
The iris pen scanner says that it needs a USB port and CD drive. Unfortunately, they failed to mention that most USB drives do not have enough power to run the Iris pen's scanner. I tried 2 computers and called technical support 3 times. Each time it was the same story... not enough power. I told them that I had a brand new, expensive computer with only 2 other USB devices hooked up and he still said it wasn't enough. Anyway, I had to return mine and I would highly suggest looking for another product because the Iris Pen Scanner does not live up to its claims.
It works as promised.......2005-03-20
I received the IRIS Pen Express a day ago, installed the software and the pen and started using it right away. I am pleased with the pen scanner. It works as represented and is quite simple to use. I wanted the pen scanner for small scanning jobs out of books etc (I practice law and will use the product in legal research and writing projects). For larger jobs, I will continue use a flat-bed scanner.
The IRIS pen is fast and amazingly accurate right out of the box. I carefully considered competing pens and decided to go with IRIS--so I have no experience with QuickLink or other competitors.
I think the reviews which are very tough on the IRIS Pen are unwarranted. The IRIS Pen is a very good product. I'm rating this a 4 out of 5 stars but it may be a 4.5 (and nothing is a 5).
Poor Quality.......2005-02-18
I saw the mixed reviews of this product, but decided to take a chance anyway, and ordered it. It was a bad decision. Trouble started right away when the installation CD didn't work. Amazingly, it simply didn't contain the installation files. I called IRIS tech support and they emailed me a link where I could download the installation files. I downloaded the files and then was able to install the program. Next, I read all the Help instructions (yes, I really did that
), calibrated the pen and started to scan some text. Well, I tried and tried, including recalibrating the pen several times, but mostly what I got was garbled text. It simply doesn't work very well.
The pen has three blue buttons on it, one large one and two smaller ones. However, the documentation doesn't explain what they are for. So, I called tech support again and asked them what the buttons were for. The tech support fellow said the large button was just there - it didn't do anything. He said you could program the other two buttons to enter carriage returns, paragraphs, and other commands, or you could just ignore them if you want.
I went back to trying to get the pen to scan text, but eventually gave up, boxed it up, and returned it to Amazon.

Buckle up - the Power Mac G4 is here. It features the revolutionary PowerPC G4 with Velocity Engine, which crunches multimedia data at blazing-fast speeds. The Velocity Engine uses true independent vector processing - a technology originally developed for use in scientific supercomputers. It gives you the power you need to create and manipulate even the most complex graphics files. The result is unprecedented productivity for creative professionals - in the arts as well as the sciences.Apple designed the Power Mac G4 for creative professionals who use computers as the pivotal tool of their trade, setting the pace of their work, their productivity, even their success. With its blazing-fast speed and convention-crushing design, the Power Mac G4 picks up where the best-selling Power Macintosh G3 left off. The Power Mac G4 is so powerful that its speed is measured in gigaflops, or billions of floating-point operations per second, just like supercomputers. At the heart of this system is the PowerPC G4 with Velocity Engine. Using vector processing, the PowerPC G4 brings supercomputer performance to the desktop for the first time. The Velocity Engine moves vector and multimedia data at super efficient speeds - it can process data in 128-bit chunks, instead of the smaller 32-bit or 64-bit chunks used in traditional processors. For all those who consider their desktop system a tool for expressing their creative abilities, there's a computer that can keep up with everything their minds can imagine - as quickly as they can only imagine. It's Power Mac G4.
Amazon.com
There's simply no better multimedia desktop than a fully-loaded Power Mac. High-speed FireWire connections, a SuperDrive that can read and write both DVDs and CDs, great graphics--what more could you ask for? The Power Mac is also appealing as a high-end business computer or even a gaming desktop. The technical specs are nothing short of mouthwatering: an 867 MHz PowerPC G4 process or, 60 GB hard disk drive, and nVidia GeForce2 MX graphics card. It comes with 128 MB of memory standard, but with support for up to 1.5 GB and its easy-access case design, memory upgrades are easy. Like all Power Macs, this model includes blazing 1 Gbps Ethernet networking and a 56K modem. The system comes with both the classic Mac OS 9 and the slick new Mac OS X installed.
Customer Reviews:
Works great.......2003-12-02
We have 3 of these that we use for our college newspaper. They work great because each one has zip drives in them and we don't have to worry about the format of the disk. We can just take the disk from computer to computer, which makes sharing and transferring graphics much easier.
One problem that I seem to have is, being used to my HP Pavilion, I will click on the X on the left, but I forget to close the program. After crashing the computer a few times, I learn my lesson.
Bad Computers.......2002-02-14
Mac user for 6 years bought 2 dual 800 end of Sept. and within in a month both machines had processors replaced. Started to work on them again and the logic board went out. Apples respones to this was give me 2 more 800, NO THANK YOU! After a couple of weeks delay were not going to chance it and Apple says to bad. Guess the attorney is going to make some money.
Schwing!.......2002-02-07
I've had this baby for about 4 months now... what a delight. Adjacent to my G4 is a Dell 1.3ghz Pentium III. The clock speed means nada. I fire them up at the same time each morning and about a full minute after the Mac is busy opening applications for me, the Pentium is just starting to show the icons on the desktp. As chip architecture gets improved, you're going to see the Win-Tel crowd also saying that "clock speed doesn't matter" because newer Intel chips will be rated at 300mhz, but be faster than the 1.3gig P3 chips.
To compare a Mac and a Wintel machine is like comparing a pick axe to a chainsaw. Each have their uses, levels of complexity and levels of simplicity.
The dual processor won't do you a heck of a lot of good if you never use OS X. Only a couple of OS 9 apps utilize the dual processors.... OS X is all over that bad boy.
For now, I still work 90% of the time in Classic mode, but this machine still sings. I haven't had one lock-up or crash since I bought this computer. The standard keyboard has been improved and fits normal human adult hands. The power key on the keyboard has been replaced by an eject key, and next to that are "volume up," "volume down," and "mute" buttons for quick volume access.
The CPU is beautiful, stylish and easy to carry. The built-in speaker is classy and delivers decent sound for an internal speaker.
If you're a grahic artist, designer or web developer, this is the machine for you. Using programs like Photoshop and Illustrator in a Windows environment is just clumsy and awkward... graphics programs are meant to run on a Mac.
This is also the best choice for those wanting to create their own movies, CDs, mp3 collections and DVDs. No extra hardware or software to buy... just plug in your camcorder, CD or mp3 player and go! Easy, trouble free, and Koko the Gorilla could add RAM to this machine... no screwdrivers... just open up the latch and snap in your memory. This is the best computer I've ever used.
PENTIUM MATT.......2002-01-25
obviously matt's head has been spining in the pentium world for too long. matt, do you own a mac? no? i didn't think so. just b/c it says 2Ghz on the label doesn't mean that it runs 2Ghz when you need it.
This is a Dream Machine.......2002-01-14
This Machine is a Dream! The only thing that might be better is the Dual 800 MHZ machine that cost considerably more.
With the super drive, made by Pioneer by the way, you can turn and burn anything. Apple SHOULD have made this DVD-RW but locked that out with the firm ware provided.
The Drive is a CD-RW/DVD-RW made by pioneer and in a pc would do just that. Why Apple chose to lock out this feature is just what keeps "The Mac from being on every desk top in America! No logic to it!!
The Power Mac Quick Silver is a Mercedes Benz in the computor world. Sleek, pretty, and worth the money. A Graphic generating Machine! I use it for Digital video. I am satisfied that I bought one. There is something about having a top of the line machine that you can not explain unless you have one. It's a feeling of being able to do anything . Its Great!!
