4 out of 5 stars Does the job after practice.......2007-09-12

I actually bought the IRISPen Express when I read the special price offered in the October issue of PCWorld. It was $30 off the retail price of $130 if you went to the link shown in the ad.If I had read the reviews here before I ordered, I might have had reservations about my decision.

It arrived in only a couple of days....the first big surprise. I opened the box and did exactly as the instructions said on loading the software first before plugging in the pen reader into the USB slot. What I got was no power to the pen when I tired to calibrate. I then read in the installed instruction manual that USB slots in the front of many computers do not give a good connection to power and to try one in the back of the PC. That worked!!!

After doing some test scans, I tried a few lines out of books and magazines. The results was not perfect, but I feel it does a good job after practice and doing what I see others mentioned; using a flat surface, having consistant light and keeping the pointer inline with the text when scanning.

I don't recommend more than one cup of coffee before doing many scans. A shaky hand can have an affect on the quality. On books when you get near the middle of a page that isn't flat can produce unreliable OCR as well.

5 out of 5 stars The IRISPen works as advertised........2007-08-31

The IRISPen works as advertised. I am currently reading for my PhD comprehensive exam and I use the pen to lift quotes from the books I am reading. I am careful to calibrate the pen with each new book and each new lighting environment (i.e. when going from my desk to the couch, from daylight to desk lamp, from home to office, and vice versa). It only works well if the page I am scanning is held flat on a solid surface. It works with near 100% accuracy on hardcover books but does a terrible job if I just hold a softcover book on my laps, I can't imagine trying that on a magazine; hard and flat is key. When used carefully the IRISPen is a huge time saver. My only regret is that I discovered this gadget after I was halfway through my readings and my notes on the first 20 books where taken by hand.

2 out of 5 stars iris pen.......2007-08-29

it doesn't pick up the data very quickly and is very sensitive to how the lighting is in the room/on my desk. It almost isn't functional in my office space (which has lots of shadows as it has dark wook walls/ceiling.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible. Just terrible........2007-07-26

This product was a waste of my money. After spending countless hours playing with it, re-reading the instructions, making adjustments, etc., my text still looks like this:

My,,,asd][asd,]asdlasfkasdlas]fkwetrbgksg eklg kgwlsfdv ../.zxcv.svd ./v.. sd/>CV>

Save yourself the money.

1 out of 5 stars Almost useless.......2007-06-19

The performance of this scanner is execrable. On RARE occasions, it surprises you with a perfect scan of an entire line of text. On the other 24 scans, the quality ranges from totally garbled (not one character correct) to its "high quality" of text requiring a minimum of 5 corrections per line.

The only possible justification for buying this pen scanner is to use with a notebook in a library where a copier or flatbed scanner isn't available. Even then, be prepared to scan each line 5 or 6 times to get a usable entry (which will still contain errors).

I gave this product 1 star because that's the lowest option. It deserves a zero or lower.

The two 5-star ratings above can ONLY have been given by ringers, in my opinion.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Macs.......2007-09-01

I read a review for IRISPEN EXPRESS in the NY Times in Aug 07 that was the best of the 3 pens that would read the print on paper and then put it on your computer. I sent for it but I could not use it since it waorked only with Windows and not with a Mac. I wanted to return it but I could not get the return merchandise number from their shipper though I asked for it twice.

Consequently I can not tell you anything about the product but I would warn customers of Amazon that the shipper of this product will not accept returns, I have told Amazon of this difficulty but have not received a response. This is the first time Amazon has failed me

Amazon.com Product Description

Help manage labor-intensive typing and note taking--you've found the IRISPen Express handheld scanner. It's no more difficult to use than a highlighter, and its about the same size, too. Just run the scanner steadily over the text you want to transfer into your computer. Two buttons on the side of the pen are easily programmable to match keyboard functions.

Grayscale scanning is designed for precisely legible text, with impressive speeds; the Pen Express reads at about 1,000 characters or 3.15 inches per second, and can also scan simple logos and headlines. Fonts are irrelevant, as long as the size is between 6 and 22 pt. It's designed to work with 55 different languages, and the interface is translated into French, English, Spanish, Dutch, German, and Italian.

Power is received from your PC via a USB cable, which is both an advantage and a disadvantage--you won't have to worry about charging or replacing a battery, but you can't use the scanner by itself either. The unit functions on both Windows and Macintosh platforms. IRIS includes a six-month warranty.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Simple and Fast.......2006-03-04

The pen is somewhat awkward to hold but once you get used to it, then everything is a breeze. Recognition is good (not perfect) and integration with MS Word is seamless. Overall good product.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Product - nothing less...!.......2006-02-17

I used the IRIS Pen to scan all the printed text-media I gathered from work last year (about 300 pages of valuable data), in order to put it on a CD rather than having it in form of a huge pile of paper...it took me only 3days! Typing all of that information myself would have been a task unable to finish without this product.

1 out of 5 stars Completely disatisfied..........2005-07-07

The iris pen scanner says that it needs a USB port and CD drive. Unfortunately, they failed to mention that most USB drives do not have enough power to run the Iris pen's scanner. I tried 2 computers and called technical support 3 times. Each time it was the same story... not enough power. I told them that I had a brand new, expensive computer with only 2 other USB devices hooked up and he still said it wasn't enough. Anyway, I had to return mine and I would highly suggest looking for another product because the Iris Pen Scanner does not live up to its claims.

4 out of 5 stars It works as promised.......2005-03-20

I received the IRIS Pen Express a day ago, installed the software and the pen and started using it right away. I am pleased with the pen scanner. It works as represented and is quite simple to use. I wanted the pen scanner for small scanning jobs out of books etc (I practice law and will use the product in legal research and writing projects). For larger jobs, I will continue use a flat-bed scanner.

The IRIS pen is fast and amazingly accurate right out of the box. I carefully considered competing pens and decided to go with IRIS--so I have no experience with QuickLink or other competitors.

I think the reviews which are very tough on the IRIS Pen are unwarranted. The IRIS Pen is a very good product. I'm rating this a 4 out of 5 stars but it may be a 4.5 (and nothing is a 5).

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality.......2005-02-18

I saw the mixed reviews of this product, but decided to take a chance anyway, and ordered it. It was a bad decision. Trouble started right away when the installation CD didn't work. Amazingly, it simply didn't contain the installation files. I called IRIS tech support and they emailed me a link where I could download the installation files. I downloaded the files and then was able to install the program. Next, I read all the Help instructions (yes, I really did that ), calibrated the pen and started to scan some text. Well, I tried and tried, including recalibrating the pen several times, but mostly what I got was garbled text. It simply doesn't work very well.

The pen has three blue buttons on it, one large one and two smaller ones. However, the documentation doesn't explain what they are for. So, I called tech support again and asked them what the buttons were for. The tech support fellow said the large button was just there - it didn't do anything. He said you could program the other two buttons to enter carriage returns, paragraphs, and other commands, or you could just ignore them if you want.

I went back to trying to get the pen to scan text, but eventually gave up, boxed it up, and returned it to Amazon.

For every application there is a calculator, and for financial functions, this is it. The HP19BII features four display lines with 23 characters each, plus6,500 bytes of memory. Offering over 450 business, statistical, andscientific functions, the calculator is also easily programmable for customequations and functions. Personal information management applications, currency and measurement unit conversions, and functions that help youtrack loan payments, interest rates, amortization, and internal rate orreturn make this calculator a must for all business applications.

Advanced users may find the calculator's functions a little dated. Itincludes the ACRS table for calculating depreciation applied to limitedpartnership assets, which was replaced by Modified ACRS (MACRS) in 1986.But many users will find that the extensive functions and programmabilitycompensate for this shortcoming. We especially appreciated the time anddata management functions like the alarm clock, calendar, appointments, anddate arithmetic, number lists, editing, sorting, and storing.

The HP19BII usesthree N batteries. It comes with a one-year warranty.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Battery door broken, love the calculator.......2007-02-11

Great calculator. But my battery door broke after 13 years! Totally ruined my day. :| (that and the fact that I was working on my taxes when I noticed it). Guess I will have to try tape to keep it together. Originally bought the 19bii while in an MBA program. It has been invaluable. Math, finance, and stats layout are excellent. Love the regression plotting. Alpha and PDA functions are too clunky. Never used them because they were not useful. From a math, finance, and stats perspective I LOVE this calculator and wish the physical design of the battery door was better.

4 out of 5 stars Great Calculator, worthless PDA.......2006-09-17

This calculator saved by [...] in college, empowering me to get my degree in Corporate Finance and International Economics. When I started my upper division classes, the Prof.'s insisted that their students get a financial calculator. Knowing that cash was tight, they pointed us to the low end calculator's like HP-12's and TI BA's. But when I looked at them, I was disappointed and apprehensive. Then I asked the Prof.'s, lecturers, and guest speakers which calculator they used, I found they used the HP 17's and HP 19's. That settled it for me. And the difference quickly became obvious compared to my classmates who bought the cheaper models.

I started out my junior semester trying to make do with my TI-89 Graphing calculator (an excellent machine) but inputting the formulas and programming the functions into the memory was not worth the effort and created poor results. The first time I failed to finish a 5-minute quiz was the last time I walked into a finance class without my HP-19BII.

Since graduating, I never approach a client or business meeting without the HP close at hand. It works every time and gives fast answers that I can rely on for accuracy and completeness of information.

During exams, the calculator gave me the edge and confidence I needed to excel in my course work. I often was among the first to finish and, as my confidence in the calculator increased, my ability to add to class discussions improved.

My HP has the battery compartment in the back, so I have not had the problems some of the other reviews mentioned. The PDA functions are my only real complaint. They are worse than useless and not worth the time to learn. The only advantage of the PDA part of this calculator is that the hinged keypad makes an excellent and very protective cover for the rest of the calculator. The bond, amortization, and IRR functions are superior to the HP-17 series as well. Even the TVM and conversion functions work better.

I dinged the calculator for making you pay for the worthless PDA functions just to add the protection of the hard keyboard cover. This is the one to get for finance professionals. Real estate tycoon want-a-be's should stick to the HP-12 so that they avoid the image problem of looking like a math geek. Just make sure that the math geek back at the office who makes your loan happen has one in his pocket.

4 out of 5 stars Right tool for the right job.......2005-09-30

If your looking for a machine that you can drop off a building, do sophisticated mathematics, or use as PDA, this isn't it. But if you're a financial profesional that wants a quick, user-friendly tool, it's hard to beat. Yes, my first 19BII disintegrated when it fell off my desk, and the battery door on my second one is held on by tape, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I still own a 12C (it's built like a tank), but trying to do any sort of TVM or cash flow analysis without the benefit of the menus and displays of the 19BII is stone age. Adding a platinum face plate doesn't make the 13 any more sophisticated or easier to use.

I also own a 17BII. The 17 has many of the same menu-driven funtions as the 19 (including the Solver function that allows you to create your own multi-variable formulas and solve for the single missing one), it's cheaper, and is more readily available, but the 17 lacks three things: (1) where 19 has alpha keys for entering formulas in the Solver function, appointments, labels, etc. the 17 uses inefficient, multiple key strokes akin to spelling things on your telephone; (2) the 19 has three-line display vs. one line on the 17, which is helpful when reviewing input and viewing output (e.g. loan amortization); and (3) the 19 has a handy section that converts various length, area, volume, mass, and temperature measurements that is missing on the 17 (maybe you don't need to know that 3.6 acres = 1.46 hectares or 4.25 liters = 143.71 fl. oz., but when you do it's right there).

And for those who think the 19 isn't well built, the cheap feel of the keys on the 17 won't turn you on either.

Complicated cash flows or amortizations where you need a print-out are definitely better done in Excel, but I still use my 19 regularly to double check that Excel isn't pulling in some strange cell.

If you're looking to buy a 19, make sure to find out if it's a newer model with the battery door on the back of the unit (vs older ones that are on the side). The side doors were (and still are) prone to pop off, creating a risk of losing the door itself, the batteries (which aren't cheap), and the information stored in the machine (biggest loss is usually your Solver formulas).

If HP wants to put out a 19BIII, I'll buy one. In the meantime, I just pray that the tape continues to hold . . .

4 out of 5 stars Great for business and MBA.......2004-09-14

    Great device!
The best that I've had. Unfortunately, the battery cover is too fragile and broken.
The worst thing is that now this model from HP is discontinued

5 out of 5 stars Irreplaceable for finance professionals.......2004-01-17

Just have to log my support for this great calculator, similar to others I bought an HP 19B in the beginning of my college years (1984) along with all the related add'l manuals available at the time (marketing, banking, real estate,?) and have loved and used it ever since - despite religious use of Palm devices since their inception. Yes my battery cover broke also, but high tensile clear tape quickly remedied that. Unfortunately a mishap damaged the keypad functionality requiring a replacement. I'm estatic to be able to replace it so easily! May buy two to make sure there's always a backup.

    2 out of 5 stars Lightlid 35 is pathetic!.......2007-03-05

I needed to scan many slides to make a DVD for my parent's anniversary. My brother gave me his Lightlid 35 and Microtek scanner (not X6). The Lightlid barely did what I needed it to. It's a piece of junk. However, it seemed I couldn't touch any other slide scanner for less than a few hundred dollars. Anyway, if you don't need perfect scans of slides, this Lightlid is for you. Beware, forget scanning slides that are too light or too dark, it can't read them.

    4 out of 5 stars ScanMaker X6 is a great deal!.......2000-02-18

I purchased my Microtek ScanMaker X6 and just recieved it. After taking about twenty minutes to install the USB version on my PowerBook, I installed the drivers, and it worked wonderfully. To get the best scans out of this machine, it requires that you use higher DPI. I found that using ScanWizard through Photoshop much more accurate than using the ScanMaker program. Overall, this product produces EXCELLENT images (And I'm a picky photographer). Great deal!

    Amazon.com Review

True 600 x 1,200 dpi scanning doesn't have to come in an expensive package. The Microtek ScanMaker X6 offers several advanced technologies to give you great scans of text and color and black-and-white images, all at an inexpensive price.

We set up the ScanMaker X6 without documentation to guide us: we plugged in the AC power and connected the USB cable to our PC. Then, with the scanner turned off, we installed the drivers, optical character recognition (OCR) software, and ScanSuite software from the CD-ROM. We restarted Windows and turned on the scanner, and Windows automatically completed the installation. The entire setup process was flawless.

To test the scanner, we placed a color photo on the scanner bed, started a paint application, and selected Acquire from the application's File menu. The ScanMaker driver software started automatically, allowing us to select the scanning options. We chose 600 dpi with millions of colors and clicked the mouse for a preview scan. The preview scan took only 19 seconds. We used the ScanMaker software to crop the preview image and then clicked the mouse for a full scan. The full scan took 50 seconds and contained unwanted moiré patterns.

We repeated the scan, this time specifying a descreening option. After 90 seconds, we were treated to beautiful results: the moiré pattern had disappeared entirely. It was impossible to distinguish this scan from a scan of the same photograph made on a much more expensive professional scanner.

To test the OCR software, we started ScanSuite, clicked the OCR button, and set the options for 300 dpi and for output to Microsoft Word. We scanned a high-contrast, multicolored promotional flyer overlaid with black text. The scan took 25 seconds plus eight seconds for OCR processing and conversion to Word's .doc format. We opened the Word file to mixed results. The OCR software had mistaken every red bullet in the original as "4m" or "4o," and it had placed line breaks in unexpected places. However, the software had read all the text, and there were no outright typographical errors.

Given the ScanMaker's easy setup, good scans of photographs, and friendly ScanSuite software, we think this is an excellent scanner for the price.

4 out of 5 stars A useful tool with not enough instructions.......2000-03-10

The Microtek Scanmaker X6 is a pretty sharp looking unit and the installation of the unit and its software were straightforward. It will scan in documents and pictures up to 8.5 x 11 inches quickly and with extremely high resolution. Once the picture is taken, the included software will allow you to manipulate the colors, add effects etc. just like a computer graphics expert (well, kinda). The only real problem I had with it stemmed from it being my first scanner. The unit comes with very few instructions. A simple pamphlet on how to scan in nice photos would have been extremely useful. I was able to quickly discern how to adjust the resolution and scaling so that the pictures I was scanning didn't turn out to be several hundred MB large, but I am not sure everyone will realize how to do that. Even now, I am not sure whether it is better to scan in a picture with high resolution and then scale it down with the software or scan it in with a lower resololution and scale it down less. . .see the kind of confusion I am talking about? On the upside, I have been able to augment my website with tons of pictures and scan in some important documents. The software will even allow you to use your scanner as either a fax machine or a photocopier (provided you have a modem and printer, respectively). Generally speaking, I recommend the unit to people who at least have some clue about how to use computers well. The real amateurs will probably never figure it out.

4 out of 5 stars Good quality scanner, great pictures and easy to use..........1999-12-09

I recently purchased this scanner despite being aware of the bad reviews at Amazon because so many other independent comparative reviews gave it top recommendations.

I found both the hardware and software very easy to install on my Dell laptop using Windows 98, and overall the scanner is well built with a tough aluminium case.

I could not fault the scanning quality, which produced a very clear, sharp image. However, I was a little disappointed in the fax software which, as far as I can tell, can only fax one scan in one call and seems to have to take two passes of each page. Also the word recognition omnipage bundle made too many mistakes (although it has to be said that if you are going to do a lot of OCR then you are probably advised to buy a specialist package such as Omnipage Pro V.9 rather than rely on bundled software that comes with any scanner).

Apart from these software limitations, the actual scanner is second to none. I think that Microtek have recently updated the installation software so that many of the problems encountered by other reviewers are now ironed out.

One annoying thing that I did notice was a faint ticking sound coming from the transformer when the scanner is switched off but still plugged in at the mains. Although this is, according to Microtek, perfectly normal, it can be annoying if you have sensitive hearing and work in a very quiet environment. Most people would never notice it.

In summary: the scanner output quality and build deserves 5 stars, whereas the bundled software, although easy to use, deserves 4 stars. Overall I will give it 4 stars because of the ticking sound which forces me to switch it on and off at the wall socket.

5 out of 5 stars No problems at all.......1999-11-18

I got my scanner from Dell along with my computer. Itinstalled easily and has worked fine. I have had absolutely noexperience with scanners. Mine makes great scans in all modes but I normally use it in the scan to file mode. I have had no reason to try to reach the help lines or any thing like that. I like it.

1 out of 5 stars Never got it to work; never got Microtek support to help me........1999-11-03

My previous scanner broke, so I bought the legal size version of this scanner that comes with USB and SCSI connections (V6-USL), and followed the installation instructions to the letter. The system recognized it fine, but when I tried to test/use the scanner, the machine would lock up. After re-installing several times, I took off from work early one day to call support and work through it with them. I called every five minutes for 3 whole hours, and they never once picked up the phone. I returned the scanner and bought a Visioneer instead, and it works fine.

I hear Microtek makes good scanners, but the combination of a non-functional device and a support group that doesn't answer the phone is very frustrating.

3 out of 5 stars Good product - Bad technical support.......1999-10-24

I have a scanmaker X6 with scsi. I like the product, but my scansuite does not work properly and there is absolutely no troubleshooting information in the scansuite pdf file. I logged on to the website and found very little technical support there as well. The error message I receive is: "Unexpected error! Please quit scansuite then relaunch again. File: TW_Manager.cp. I believe it's probably a simple problem, as I can scan just fine through photoshop, but I will probably have to call long distance and possibly being put on hold for a long time to find the answer. I think Microtek could use a lot of improvement in their technical support on the internet.

      Product Description

All in one with the Magnavox MC132EMG! This 13" Designer TV / VCR combi has auto clock with time zone, an earphone jack, front a/v connections and is energy star compliant. And because its a Magnavox Combi, it has a VCR too....The VCR has auto head cleaning, auto repeat playback, plays S-VHS tapes and has an English and Spanish on screen display.

      Amazon.com Product Description

The MC13E2MG TV/VCR may be small, but it packs a ton of features. Its light weight (23 pounds) and 13-inch screen make it perfect for kitchens, bedrooms, and dorm rooms, while its front-panel audio/video input accommodates a camcorder, game console, DVD player, or second VCR quickly and easily. Automatic features include auto tracking, auto repeat, and auto head cleaner.

The VCR's ShowGuard backup memory keeps your timer/programming safe, even through power outages. If the power fails, timer recordings will be restored when the clock is reset. (The timer recording will not occur if it was scheduled to take place during the power failure.)

Meanwhile, auto clock set with time-zone adjustment sets itself to the correct time from a user-approved channel carrying a time signal. Daylight-savings time adjustment automatically compensates for daylight savings time in early April and late October, so you don't have to reset the clock twice a year.

When tape playback begins, auto tracking seeks the optimum video and audio tracking positions for the clearest picture and sound. With automatic channel setup, the VCR tuner scans through television frequencies, automatically storing active broadcast channels into memory. Then, only channels programmed into memory are tuned using the channel up/down buttons on either the remote or front panel. Automatic channel preset can be repeated whenever desired, and you can always add or delete channels manually.

Other features include closed-captioning, bilingual (English/Spanish) onscreen display, a sleep/wake timer, a monaural earphone jack for private listening, repeat play, quasi-S-VHS performance (lets you play S-VHS tapes at standard VHS resolution), and forward/reverse search.

      What's in the Box
TV/VCR combo, remote control, remote batteries, warranty information, and user's manual.

2 out of 5 stars Magnavox 13 inch combo bombed quickly.......2004-10-25

This is lightweight and easy to remove from the red box it is packaged inside of. I was able to insert the cable into the jack and then plugged in the unit.

The first step is to choose the language and then use auto preset for the channels. This television does have the capability of changing the date and time according to daylight savings time. This also comes equipped with the V-Chip, but since my children mainly watch the same stations and videos there is no need for this system in our household. If I choose to add major stations to my cable lineup than I would look into the V-chip options at that time.

I initially chose the Magnavox because the display models showed buttons on the control panel of the unit as rigged and they looked stronger than the usual round buttons from other sets we have had. It was not until I carried the box inside and realized that the cover showed the regular buttons and that is what we got. I did not like that the supply was underneath another model, causing confusion for customers.

The front panel also has an earphone jack and there is a red light signal when the power is turned on. The video injack and audio injack are farthest to the left and then the power button, volume options and channel. The next section closest to the right are the forward, play and rewind buttons along with the button used for stop and eject. This creates confusion for my son to have to press this button twice.

So far I have no need to add, delete or reset channels. When there is a power outage due to weather or cable mishaps as well as our internal wiring, the Magnavox goes back to the channel it was on, unlike the previous set that would be at the language prompt.

The power can be on or off to eject a tape, but the unit must be plugged in. If the manual timer programming is in process the tape cannot be ejected. Should you need to interrupt a timer recording you can press stop and also find out how much time is left on the timer by pressing the display button on the remote control. The picture control options are the standard ones such as brightness and contrast. These are brought to the screen in the lower middle with them preset to the middle of the line. I usually have no need to change these unless we have an old tape or something really dark.

I made the purchase on May 2, 2003 and by the end of the month the videos were not displaying correctly. We ended up returning this to Best Buy for a Sylvania 19" Combo.

We could hear the videos, but they all had the same static silver screen with nothing working. I tried the manual tracking and even a cleaning video with no response. The only helpful hint that seemed worth trying in this instance was the one indicating playback is poor or tape is destroyed. The options are tracking or using the rental feature. This is supposed to improve picture quality of worn videotapes, but I tried a few brand new ones and still nothing worked.

We have gone through three Sylvania Combos over three years and recently bought a 13" Daewood.

Those families who have children with autism usually go through televisions and VCRs quite frequently due to the constant pushing of the buttons.
