Customer Reviews:
Keeps going, and going, and going...........2007-07-11
I've just now had to buy a new cartridge after owning the printer for 7 years. Supplies perfect print quality for well over 3000 pages.
Still ticking.......2001-08-18
The promise of 3,000 pages of text is no exaggeration. I waited until printing that many before writing this review. Many pages I print are double-spaced (for writing and college), but full with only 1" margins. I'm not sure how much longer the cartridge will last, but for now the well-distributed toner (sharp, no background shading) continues.

Amazon.com Review
The NEC SuperScript 1400 is a reliable laser printer, ideal for home or small offices. Its resolution of 1,200 dpi brings clarity even to fine detail for PC users, and with the addition of an Ethernet card the SuperScript 1400 is network ready. The standard toner cartridge lasts through a full 3,000 pages, which puts it at the top of the class when comparing costs for consumables. However, this printer is fairly bulky, so home office users may prefer to locate it somewhere other than their desktop.
We found that installation was simple, simply a matter of attaching cords and following along on the loading disk. In general, the machine was a smooth operator. Users will have to supply their own parallel or USB cable, but everything else was included. The toner cartridge is large and seemed slightly awkward when we snapped it in, but once it was in it worked fine. We printed on several different types of paper and experienced no jams. However, materials like labels or transparencies do require single-sheet loading, an annoyance for large batches. Also, there is no automatic duplexing ability, so paper needs to be manually flipped if you want printing on both sides. This is fine for large print runs, but for individual sheets it can be tiresome.
The installation disk offers an online registration option, which got us an additional year of warranty coverage. When your printing needs are fairly basic, this printer is an economical choice, as the lack of special features like automatic duplexing and color printing lower the price in comparison to many other laser printers. There is nothing exotic about the SuperScript 1400, but if what you need is a sturdy, reliable, easy-to-operate laser printer, it won't disappoint. --Jill Lightner
Pros:
- Runs smoothly with no paper jams
- Excellent clarity on monochrome documents
Cons:
- No automatic duplexing
- Monochrome printing only
- Maximum 600 dpi for Macintosh users
Amazon.com Product Description
NEC has designed the 1400 Superscript laser printer for offices that need fast, professional-quality text printing. It offers crisp 1,200 dpi resolution and print speeds of up to 12 pages per minute. And it's effectively driven by NEC's 66 MHz RISC processor technology to ensure consistent, high-quality printing over the life of the machine.
The 1400 is supported by a brawny 270-sheet internal paper tray to speed the printing of a wide array of paper media, including a full range of professional stationary and envelopes (up to 8.5 by 14 inches), labels, and card stock. A straight paper path improves speed and troubleshooting, while the included multipurpose tray provides face-up output. For even more power, you can increase the input capacity by adding an optional 550-sheet lower paper tray, resulting in a generous input of 820 sheets. The 1400 Superscript is a powerful aide-de-camp in both businesses and homes.
The NEC 1400 Superscript fits into most offices as a compact desktop printer at just under 18 by 15 by 10.5 inches and approximately 21 pounds. It's compatible with PCs and Macs, using parallel and USB interfaces, and is supported by a standard 1-year limited warrantee plus a second year free upon product registration within 30 days of purchase. Also available is an optional ServiceXpress package.
Customer Reviews:
Works great, high quality output.......2007-04-21
Well, for a basic laser printer, this is a really nice piece. Quiet, reliable, very professional business-quality print. I wish it offered double sided printing and did copying, etc, but that cost a lot more in laser printer. You can get it for not a lot of money in ink-jet, and I'll probably buy that as a draft printer.
works well most of time.......2003-09-29
This printer works well for regular printing jobs. I was a bit concerned first because various plastic parts are very flimsy (compared to other printers, such as HP) and looked easily breakable. However, so far it is working fine for about two years. A couple of problems: I like to use back of used papers for printing drafts and less important documents. This printer has hard time picking up used sheets separately from the regular tray. I could never figure out how to use the manual feed tray. The printer did not come with a decent manual.
Very reliable for 2 years.......2003-03-14
I bought this printer back in Dec 2000 for use at home, and it's been a great experience. I bought the 3 year extended warranty for $..., and I had to use it once early on. NEC has excellent after-sales support. They cross-shipped me a new unit when mine broke down so I didn't have to scramble around for a box to ship it. I have used technical support, and they answered the phone within 2 minutes. Technical support advice was accurate and courteous. The support website is also easy to use and contains all the downloads and documentation you need.
I printed my Ph.D. thesis on this printer, and it turned out perfect. The text quality is excellent, but not as good as the more expensive (>$1000) HP printers that I use at school.
You can't upgrade the memory or internal software (this printer will never be able to do Postscript), but for the home user, I think it's more than adequte. I also think the printer is attractively designed compared to its competition from Brother. The only thing I wish it had was an auto-duplex to print on both sides of the paper to save our trees.
Highly recommended for the budget user!
good output, high noise.......2001-09-06
I returned this printer to Amazon one day after it arrived to my house. Printer had really good output, but made a high pitch noice every time it printed and it would stay on for at least 5 minutes (the lowest time setting for power saving feature). It really bothered me to listen to it and my wife did not like it either. So I purchased Brother HL1240, liked it and kept it while returning this NEC. Output on both was the same (600 DPI), Brother was somewhat quicker to start printing, and was very quiet. I really cannot say anything bad about this printer except for the high pitch noise that is inexusable.
Great Bargain.......2001-08-26
For the price, this has been a worthwhile investment. It only takes a few seconds to warm up in power-saving mode, and it is very fast with text or graphics. The high capacity toner cartridges make it very economical for large amounts of printing (between manuscripts and college papers I have printed about 3,000 pages since purchase). The only reasons I didn't rate this a 5 are 1) the manual feed can be a little tricky, 2) I have had paper jams when filling the paper tray to capacity (but none if I load it a little light) and 3) I couldn't get it to work with a parallel cable. After reading another user's review, I avoided using the USB connector. NEC's help desk was very accessible, but was unable to fix the problem with the LPT1 connection. On their advice, I tried a USB cable and was up and running with no problems.

Product Description
A compact, lightweight digital still camera with 2.0 effective megapixels and a powerful 3x zoom lens, the COOLPIX 2100 is an affordable, friendly and versatile model, even for those who are using a digital camera for the first time. The COOLPIX 2100 is ideal for people who want an easy-to-use digital still camera that offers great image quality, and who are looking to get more fun out of digital photography. The camera's compact body fits easily in a pocket for carry-anywhere portability.
Amazon.com Review
The Nikon Coolpix 2100 is a good choice for digital photography beginners, offering a compact size, 2-megapixel resolution, 3x optical zoom, and a bevy of automated scene controls that are customizeable.
The 2-megapixel CCD sensor captures bright images that can be printed up to 8 x 10 inches. However, 2 megapixels just doesn't seem enough, especially when 3-megapixel cameras--like the Nikon 3100--are becoming so affordable. The movie mode captures smooth video up to 640 x 480 pixels for 7 seconds (or a more jaggy 15-second, 320 x 240-pixel videos), but it doesn't offer any sound.
One of the most impressive features of the Nikon 2100 is its size. From the online pictures we originally viewed, we imagined it to be large and a bit clunky. While it's a bit on the chunky side, the 2100 is surprisingly small. Plus, the rounded ergonomic hand grip rested comfortably and securely in our hand.
The Nikon 2100 offers a whopping 14 scene modes that automatically set the camera's white balance, exposure, and focusing point for different situations. The easy-to-learn software system features large icons and text to guide you through your choices. And some of the modes even provide an "assist" feature, with outlines of figures or landscapes to help line up the shot.
We had fun playing around with the scene modes and snapping pictures that made the most out of the shooting environment. However, we felt we lost some spontaneity if we relied too much on switching through the modes.
The Nikon 2100 is an affordable choice for a point-and-shoot camera that offers sharp, bright images and brings a lot of flexibility to the party. It comes with a starter 16 MB memory card and alkaline batteries, and we recommend a higher-capacity Compactflash card and rechargeable AA-size NiMH batteries. --Agen G.N. Schmitz
Pros:
- Compact size, comfortable in the hand
- Customizeable scene modes
- 2-megapixel resolution for prints up to 8 x 10 inches
Cons:
- Scene modes can be a bit too customizeable, and distract you from the shot
Amazon.com Product Description
Enter the world of digital photography with the easy to use, affordable Nikon Coolpix 2100. Nikon's world-renown Nikkor optics are combined with a 2-megapixel CCD to create images at resolutions up to 1,600 x 1,200 pixels, which can provide spectacular prints as large as 8 by 10 inches. It has a 3x optical zoom (a 35mm equivalent of 36-108mm) that gets you close to the action.
The Coolpix offers a bevy of features that make capturing memories a snap. Selecting a scene mode automatically sets the camera for the optimum performance in most popular picture-taking situations. The 14 scene modes include party/indoor, dawn/dusk, back light, beach/snow, sunset, and more.
The one-touch upload feature enables you to move your photos to the Web or your computer via USB cable with a single press of a button. This ease-of-use feature makes sharing images one-button easy and helps organize and store images safely on your computer.
View your pictures instantly on the camera's LCD by pressing the playback button. Nikon's unique in-camera cropping feature allows you to use the zoom buttons in playback to select the part of the image you want to save and delete the rest.
Nikon's NikonView 6 imaging software offers a number of powerful features. Add the date and time (or just the date) to the front of your picture as a reminder when the image was taken. Select one or more images you want to share, then use the simplified e-mail function within NikonView 6 to size it for a small, medium, or large screen. A copy of the image is resized (the original is maintained), then is attached to a new e-mail message in your default e-mail program. NikonView 6 also has a new feature that automatically removes most typical occurrences of red eye with the touch of a button.
The Coolpix 2100 comes with a 16 MB Starter CompactFlash card, battery, and USB and A/V cables.
Customer Reviews:
Dated technology, Good Pictures.......2007-09-23
Back when I first purchased one of these cameras (the first year it hit the market) the 2100 was downright nifty. I did an inordinate amount of research before buying (a latent Asperger's kicks in whenever I shop for technogizmos) and spoke to a number of serious photogeeks. There was a consensus: A good lens is of paramount importance.
That advice continues, I believe, to hold true, even several technological generations later: all cameras, digital or not, capture the image using a lens. No matter how nifty the digital guts of the camera, the lens is what hands the image to the CCD.
Pro:
Nikon makes really good lenses. And this camera takes very, very good pictures. 2.1 MP is plenty big enough for any digital photo displayed on a webpage. The images are sharp, clean, nice color saturation, and all of the digital "mode" doodads give you lots of versatility and entertainment until you become bored with 99% of them and recognize them as a waste of time (just like 2007 technology cameras.) It's very easy to use, and the thumb controls are basically identical to 2007 technology. It's very lightweight. I never dropped mine once, not even from a few inches, so I can't attest to any mil-spec durability, but in years of use, it always worked just fine, cold weather or hot. It's small but thick: you can put it in a shirt pocket, but you probably won't.
Con:
OK, so it's only 2.1 MP. And it's a slow as cold molasses: push the shutter button and at least a full second elapses before the picture is captured. The screen then goes black, and you wait for another second or so before the camera recovers for another shot. If you happened to shoot in conditions that trigger the flash, then you get to wait for a good eight seconds before you can shoot again. Battery life is a joke, and batteries go dead sitting in the camera even when it's turned off. The LCD screen in the back is tiny.
Why you might want one:
If you can get one for really cheap, go for it. It's very easy to use, small and light enough to take everywhere, takes very good pictures with a resolution adequate for web use, and even a kid can figure out how to use it.
Me, I just gave mine away. Technology marches on, and the Coolpix 2100 got left far, far behind. But that advice still holds about lenses, so the replacement will be a Panasonic -- with a Leica lens. I'll post a review after I've had time to try out my new camera -- when I finally decide. Still doing research...
Wow what a camara!!.......2007-01-11
I have owned this camera now for 3 years and it still amazes me how great of a little camera it is. By now its considered an old camera but i tell you the truth this camera is such a great point and shoot camera thats its worth getting. Also i will share with you all that it was very difficult to find a replacement for this camera due to the fact that it takes such phenomenal pictures. Its best pictures are taken with a lot of light however so just be aware of that. Highly recommend this great little camera
my first digi cam.......2006-04-03
I got this 2 or 3 years ago, when I was in year 7. I begged and begged my parents for one and they agreed on getting me this - although I was hoping for something more funky looking. But after I had it, I just absolutly loved it! :) It's great!
It's very durable. Let me tell you about how I've trashed this so far..
-I had my camera in my school bag (without the cover) and somehow the batterie flap broke and couldn't close properly anymore. I had to send it in to get it fixed (1st time)
-I slid my camera into my back pocket and I didn't realize that while doing that, the camera had switched itself on. So out the lense came. Then stupidly, (I don't know why I did this.. ) but I sat down. And oops.. I took my camera out of my back pocket. The lense was crooked. And it couldn't close properly. So in it went for service again. And btw, that did not come cheap. (2nd time)
Since then I have been handling my camera very carefully. I'm such a klutz!
There are some cons though...
-reacts a bit slowly now
-turn button, which means camera turns on, when sliding into pocket
...but I think that it's that way, because of my misshandling.
All in all: It's a great camera. And perfect for klutzes. Look what it's been through with me! :)
A great camera for anyone new to digital photography.......2006-04-01
This was my first digital camera and I have to say that when I first got it I loved it. However it has it's share of problems. It is almost impossible for one to shoot anything without a flash using this camera--when you try it is usually blurred. The focus is also a bit dodgy--the background of many of my photographs are very smudged looking. My recommendation is to invest a little bit more money and look into a camera with higher mp.
Battery problems workable.......2005-04-12
Reviews of this camera, as late as the Fall of 2004, seem to place the Coolpix 2100 above all its competitors (2 Mpxl, non-SLR).
My two complaints: there is no manual focus (but you can use the focus lock, half-depressing the shutter switch, to "lock in" a focus range - except in macro mode), and a wimpy flash (really only good to 6-8' (2-2.5 m). A separate flash is the answer here.
The battery issue mentioned by others below is troublesome, but not really a big problem. In short, rechargeable batteries are a must, but they tend to carry a lower voltage, which the camera battery meter reads as being "nearly empty". So, like a car with a bad fuel gauge, you eventually learn to disregard the "low battery" warning, and always carry a backup pair of charged batteries.
I've shot - ready for this? - over a hundred flash photos in a row from a single pair of rechargeable AA's. Pretty good lifetime! But the meter claimed they were low after the first 5-10...
