Power: The power LED lights up when the switch is powered on.
Link/Act: The Link/Act LED blinks when data is being sent or received through the port. When the LED is off, there is no data being transferred through the port.
Speed: The speed LED blinks when that port is transmitting at 1000 Mbps. If the LED is not lit, the port is transmitting at 10 or 100 Mbps.
FDX: If the FDX (Full Duplex/Collision) LED is lit up continuously, the connection made through the corresponding port is running in full duplex mode. If the LED is blinking, the port is experiencing data collisions. Infrequent collisions are normal. If this LED is blinking often, there may be a problem with your connection.

I've had this switch for about two years, and it's always worked flawlessly. The fan has always been noisy (about as noisy as a PC but our office is all Mac so it does stand out) but tolerable as the switch was somewhat out of the way. Over the last couple of days I've noticed it getting louder and as I type this it sounds like a "personal massage device", to put it politely.

It's still working, but it's obvious that the fan is on it's way out and I will unplug it before I leave the office so nothing bad happens.

IF the reviewers here are correct and the new version is fanless, I might go looking for a replacement tomorrow. But likely as not, I'll choose a different brand. Linksys used to be the way to go for home and small office networking, but unfortunately other companies with more innovation have created more reliable products.

On the upside, the linksys switch outlasted two linksys wireless routers. I replaced the last one with a Buffalo and so far, I'm pleased.

New Version Has No Fan -- No Problems.......2007-02-05

Bought two (one from amazon, one from buy). Easy installation, work just like a dumb switch should. Both came with no fan.

The current ones are thin and silver -- not the one pictured that looks like a linksys wireless router (and stacks with them).

Loud and lousy tech support.......2006-12-08

I purchased this switch in November 2005 and seemed to significantly improve my network throughput. I've been purchasing Linksys products for years and have never had any problems from any of them.

Like many I quickly found that the switches fan was quite loud. Since it was in a room with 5 or so computers, the noise didn't really bother me that much. The switch did its job and that's all I needed it to do.

Over the past few months, the fan has gotten progressively louder with a pleasing rattling noise as well. Obviously, the fan was approaching the end of it's sad little life. Then last week, the loud fan noise ceased. The sad little fan had breathed its last. When I touched the case, I was astonished how hot the switch was running. Obviously, something needed to happen. There was a very real chance of fire.

Now the real fun began.

Yesterday, I placed a call to Linksys' tech support. After waiting on hold for 45 minutes, I spoke with a tech support person (Let's call him 29845). I was given a case number that was supposed to allow me to return the unit. Sadly, the number was rejected as invalid by the RMA "support" web site.

Next, I tried their "live chat" "support" tool online. This time the wait was only 40 minutes and I spoke (typed?) with a very nice, but ineffective person (25174)who promised that I would be sent an email with a case number once I disconnected from the chat session. Of course, that number never came. Lovely. Another hour of my life gone.

The next morning, I called the Tech support line. Joy! They picked up right away. I spoke with a gentleman named 43406 who was very nice, but was obviously not a deep thinker. He thought that it was very important that I needed to tell him who my ISP was and what my OS was before he could consider the issue with my bad fan. After a while it became apparent that he was in over his head, he placed me on hold so he could consult with his manager. After about 20 minutes, he picked up again, made some noises that sounded like he was scratching himself with the receiver then hung up on me.

At this point, I was feeling very "special"...

I've never really ever had to deal with Linksys before for support issues. I'm not sure I have the constitution to ever try again.

Their products are generally pretty good. Since I usually never need tech support, I'm usually pretty happy with their products. This type of "support" is appallingly bad though. They've wasted a couple hours of my life and left me rather disgusted.

If you're willing to purchase any of their products, you should probably consider them throwaway items, because you're not likely to get ANY competent support from them.

Latest version has no fan and new case.......2006-11-16

Contrary to what many of the reviews say here, the latest version (3.0) of the switch has been redesigned without a fan. The switch is 100% silent. Also, the pictures on a lot of sites of the switch are old. To see the new case go to the linksys site.

Apparently version 1 had major fan issues. The latest version 3 is completely silent and performance is great. My only complaint is that I want to wall mount this switch and it includes no means to do so.

Numerous voltage settings and adapters but that's where it stops. Plugged it into my iRiver H120 and caused all kinds of electronic popping, cracking, & static to be introduced into the line out feed. I've since used other adapters that do not suffer from the same problem. Piece of junk, stay away from.

Don't pick the wrong size...........2007-07-25

This product as ordered was a size 15 (15 loops) and I felt that the range given starting at 42" was too big for my 40-42" waist. Keep in mind when selecting the size that the belt size is the padded loops section, plus extra unpadded belt length that can be adjusted in or out and the size of the buckle.

Considering this if you are at a waist size of 42", then don't order the size 15 - order the size 13 where 42" is the top end size.

Quality of the belt is top notch and comfort looks like it will work well. I got tired of having my backpack cause my back to sweat and shoulders to bind, so a belt will be a great change.

Order this product, just take the extra time to consider the size decision as this one will have to be exchanged.

A Solution That Works.......2006-11-11

I have been trying to find a way to easily carry a lot of camera equipment for quite some time. I have tried backpacks, shoulder bags, duffel bags, but none of them really worked all that well. Then I saw the Lowepro Street and Field system with completely customizable pouches, vests, belts, and accessories. It works great, you only get the pouches you need so there is no waisted space and you can organize them however you want according to how often they are used (put frequently used items in easier to access places.)

The variety alone of this system is worth the investment, but the quality and ease of use is also very high which is a big plus. You can get a case for any lens, camera body, or accessory you have. I even have cases for my cell phone and water bottle. One word of caution, be sure to measure your lens with the lens hood on backwards if you use them to make sure that the entire thing will fit into the pouch, because sometimes the lens will fit, but then the lens with the lens hood will not. I often carry 5-6 lenses, extension tubes, teleconverters, extra memory cards and batteries, and a bunch of cleaning supplies and other gadgets, which weights a ton. But when they are evenly distributed on this vest/belt Lowepro system it is actually very manageable.

The only down side is that everyone will be staring at you because you have thousands of dollars of camera equipment strapped to your body. But if you can overlook that, this is the way to go. I have used this system at many zoos without ever having problems, in fact just unzipping a single lens and switching seems safer to me than opening an entire bag of equipment every time you want to switch lenses. Many of the cases also come with a built in rain/snow cover so if the weather changes all of your equipment is not destroyed. You can also put just a few pouches on a normal belt when you are just going to take photos in the back yard or don't need to take all of your equipment, which is nice. I really can't say enough about how much easier this makes traveling with a lot of equipment, if you have been hopelessly searching for a better solution, consider this, you won't regret it.

This is a great bag to have if you have several lens, a flash, and lots of odds and ends that need to be organized in one place along with your 35mm camera. It's large, well designed, and looks super. The Nova 5 is water resistant and has all sorts of extra compartments and zippers. There are places for filters and maybe a photo handbook. They test these bags in the field beforehand so you know you are getting a rugged quality product.I think the price is quite reasonable, and when I received mine I can honestly say it exceeded my expectations.

Superb add-on for the Panasonic Lumix FZ50.......2006-09-16

The Panasonic Lumix FZ50 is an extraordinary digital camera. Leica design approved optics deliver crisp images on a 10 Megapixel sensor. Great ergonomics and very responsive handling. Granted, it is not a Nikon or Canon DSLR. You don't want the FZ50 for sports or street photography where there truly is a critical moment that must be captured. But for everything else, the FZ50 is more than fine and making it even better are the auxillary lenses, the LT-55 and LW-55.

The LW-55 is a screw-in converter that provides the equivalent of a 24.5mm lens on the FZ50. Images are surprisingly sharp, though not quite as sharp as those produced by the FZ50 lens. Distortion is very surprisingly minimal. The LW-55 weighs but 11 ounces and is only a few inches square. A bit pricey, yes, but less expensive than a 24mm Nikkor or Canon lens. No, I'm not comparing them directly, but in a relative way.

Take an FZ-50, add the LT-55 and LW-55 and for roughly a thousand dollars you have an approximately 3 pound package that will take you from 24.5mm through 1,137mm. Not bad at all for an everyday camera and especially delightful for travelling. Throw in a lightweight tripod like any from the Velbon line and a third-part flash unit and you've got everything you need. (The Panasonic dedicated flashes are frightfully expensive.) Again, the FZ50 is not a Nikon or Canon DSLR, but for most purposes, it fills the bill nicely.

pros: lenses provide what they're supposed to do - maximize the angle and zoom. Also, they're not one of those cheap lenses that partially cover your on-cam lens and you have to zoom in 2x before you can get a full image - these are just as good as professional, and for 30 bucks they come with a cleaning kit and a table-tripod - can't beat that, great product.

cons: well, "hi-def" is a term used loosely. There really isn't much more you can say about the lenses.

Head set.......2007-01-15

I bought this headset because I interview people over the phone and don't want to sit there with my head bent sideways all day. I have an ancient phone at work so I can't buy some $4 headset from walmart and jack it in. I found this on Amazon (sets in stores cost $100 and up) paid for it and got it a couple days later. It hooked up easily. You barely need the directions. It works great. Just don't turn the volume all the way up. I did that on accident and made myself deaf due to the feedback screaming in my ear.
The best part about this headset is that I could replace it with any set out there made for a computer.

Very loud humm using amplifier, annyoing humm using just headset.......2006-12-12

I've tested this by calling at least 4 different people -- After a great deal of messing with the boom I was able to keep from sounding like darth vader, but everyone complained of an annoying humm that bothers the person I'm talking too. It does so if connected to the amp or directly to my computer. I've not had these problems with my other labtec headset.

I could deal with this (ie replace the headset) but there is a very loud humm using amplifier even at the lowest volume, and at high volume it is too painful to leave on. I tried using the amplifier plugged in and with batteries. I tried it with the headset it came with and my other headset which I know is good. I tried it on two computers.

Any way I try this setup and parts, they just don't work well enough to use and am trying to return them.

Bought one of these units several months ago, and the only problem I found is the low quality earpiece and microphone. I would recommend ditching them as soon as you get the unit and going with a higher quality set to plug into the base. Other than that, the price is certainly right.

Setup comes with batteries, base, and headset, but it does accept standard size 3.5mm stereo earphone and microphone jacks. There is also a 9V AC adapter jack on the back if you want to add a universal AC adapter for constant power.
