Small, silent, and fast.......2007-09-15

An 8-port Gigabit switch for only $82?!? I thought this was definitely worth a test drive. There is no fan inside this unit, so the reviewers that complained about fan noise must be talking about a different model (the label on the bottom of my unit says "SD2008 Version 2.1"). The Gb ports appear to run at a full speed. The 100/1000 auto speed sensing worked fine except in one situation (see below); I couldn't test at 10Mb because I don't have any 10Mb devices anymore. It's a small package with mounting holes on the back. I mounted mine on the wall near where all my cat 5 cables terminate. All in all I found this switch trivial to deploy and a great performer.

The only problem I encountered was with some older building wiring that only uses 2 pairs. That's good for running 10/100Mb, but 1Gb requires 4 pairs. I could connect a 100Mb device to the SD2008 just fine using 2 pairs, but when I tried to connect a gigabit laptop the link never activated. At least with some other switches in this situation, the laptop interface drops down to 100Mb and all is fine. I don't know the details of the IEEE auto speed negotiation specification well enough to know what's suppose to happen in this case, and so I don't know if this is really a problem I can blame on the SD2008. In my particular situation I just switched to a wireless link that's available and bypassed the problem altogether. Of course I could also have upgraded the wiring to 4 pairs as the standard calls for, but it was a long wiring run and the wireless link was already available.

New version is OK.......2007-07-04

Bought this switch and received the new version which is black. It is fanless or at least if it does have fans I don't hear them. Tested it and performance is good getting almost 1Gbit under all conditions (hard disks and other hardware being the limiting factor). Also tested it with jumbo frames and worked OK. Overall good buy, great speed with jumbo frame support at a nice price.

Bad SD2008.......2007-05-27

Last week the switch stopped working. I have no idea why but all the port lights are off and none of the connections are working. I had to buy another one and this time from somebody that guarenteed it.

Newer version is quiet and better........2007-03-06

I have bought both the old version of the Linksys SD2008 about 2 years ago when first released and everyone is right - Loud, and unacceptable when sitting on a desk next to you. I am lucky that I built a server and placed it and all networking items in basement so it did not bother me. I did hear it when I went into basement thought. The fan started really getting loud about 3 months ago and it just died in the past week but switch is still going strong. I wanted to see it the Version 2.1 was any better than the 1.0 that I currently have. I have not switched over yet because I am waiting for other new parts but I did plug in new switch and well what do you know. TADA. No fan sounds. I dont think the newer version even have a fan in it. Its slightly better looking than original because front bezel is black instead of grey. I like that fact that the plugs are in the back compared to Netgears switches which plug into the front(which can make an unsightly mess with a lot of plugs) I have used Linksys products for many years now. With Cisco, they seem to get better every year. Give the newer 2.1 switch a try. You won't be dissappointed.

This line is JUNK!.......2006-09-27

I just wanted to extend my utter frustration with the RV0041 router. This is the same as the SD2008, just less ports. I spent more than $250 for this router when I bought it, thinking it would be all I ever needed. Only a few months after owning it, the already LOUD internal fan started sounding like a jet engine. I contacted Linksys support and was sent a replacement through the RMA process. The unit I received worked for about a month or so now without a problem until now. It has started sounding like the other one. What piece of junk fans did they put in these things? I am getting rid of this and going with another brand. Now I am out $254, and I have to go spend money on a router.

These slim jewel cases are actually not as streamlined as another I've bought from Staples. Also, does not snap shut nor does disc fit securely to center snap as that is noticeably small.

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, as well as a collector of music I am often asked to write about and or discuss various recording supplies.

The Maxell Slim Jewel Cases may first attract you because of the cool look and sleek design but the key component is the ability to secure the CD.

You'll find the CD will properly fit inside and when you open the case the CD will not be flying every which way.

The thin size will save you a tremendous amount of space as you build a collection.

Remember please to either label the CD or the outside of the Jewel Case for contents recognition.

the best case design in exhistence.......2007-03-10

I don't know how you could improve on the design(with out maybe a built in shell of the CD it's self as in cassettes) most CDs(especially DVD's and ROMS) get damaged really easily even with the door swing jewel cases becasue IF they fall off and open the disc flys out on the floor. this can cause light optical damage as well as physical scratching. With these(cases) the molded plastic locks them at the hub and outside for an air tight seel and it is no larger than the CD itself, you can store two of thse to one of the others and they can be stored in an overhead hutch cabnet even better than the "slim" line square ones. don't try explaining this to a sales rep at Office max,you'll only send thier brains reeling and get an insult hurled your way. they think "slim" is "slim" and square is all most locals carry anyway... but the diameter is less here too. so if you have vintage CD's or games played on "Starforce" which absolutely MUST have a perfectly polished CD then get these here, you'll never worry about accidents again!(even with rigid and heavily policied copy protective discs).

I bought these for my son as a christmas gift as he takes cd's out with him and usually those plastic cases crack or break. I love these, they are flexible, hold up, and now I have to get some for myself. Great to put video game disks in too.

Better than many.......2004-02-17

I have had this product almost 2 months now, and I've never been happier with my purchase. The color and graphics jump out and are well defined with very little "fuzz" around the edges-IF you the native screen resolution. Trying to use a lower rez for larger icons, print, etc. does create some minor blurs and fuzz but if you have a slight vision impairment like mine (can't read small print-otherwise just fine), then the native rez will work. This new technology takes some getting used to but once your brain and eyes make the switch, you'll never go back to the old clunky (and very dependable) CRT-type monitor. Only 2 things kept me from rating this five stars: the built-in speakers are JUNK-don't even bother hooking them up; and the set-up menu reads like Egyptian hieroglyphics
-in other words, you just have to figure it out by trial and error, which is easier than reading the booklet. If you're looking for a 17 inch flat panel and you have a limited budget, then this is one you should consider.

Great for vision-impaired people like me!!!.......2003-12-25

I just got a great deal on this at a local office supply store. "Twas the day before Christmas(2003), and they wanted to make a deal, so they gave me a hundred dollars off." The deal was just too good to pass up. I was concerned with the screen resolution-the higher the res, the smaller the icons and everything else on the screen. We all know how difficult is to see on a computer screen anyway. HELP IS ON THE WAY!!! If you leave the screen at the "native"(factory set) res- 1024 X 768 - AND go to the display options panel and change the icon setting from "normal" to either "large" or "extra large" the vision problem - poof! - just disappears. The color, clarity, sharpness and definition of everything on the screen makes a flat panel the best gift you can give yourself- or someone else, if you have enough money. Since I've only had this item for a little over two hours, another review is sure to follow in about six months-or sooner if I have to deal with the tech support people.

Daughter Loves It!!!.......2003-10-11

If any of my fellow parents out there are sending their kids off to college as well then I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND a LCD monitor. My daughter's desk is about the size of 4 2x4s stacked together and a regular monitor would dwarf it!

As we were over at OfficeDepot getting some school supplies I just happened to go down the monitor isle and my daughter liked this design. I had never heard of Microtek but after 2 months of use right now it works perfectly she tells me. Almost have to have faith when they are so far away that the product will work. It came with a 3 year warranty which is a nice addition as that should almost get her through all of college!

A Versatily, beautiful film, with a lot of "snap".......2004-10-09

As a long term Ilford user, I was reluctant to even try the Kodak TMax and determined not to like it. After 2 rolls it became my favorite film. The latitude is great.It was highly versatile even when over or under exposed.The contrast is like nothing I've ever seen in an amateur film. My negatives looked great from the get go, reducing the need for contrast corrections during print processing. I've never used a fi;m (as a serious student, not a professional) with better contrast and clarity. I found it has much better contrast and finer grain structure than the Ilford HP5, which was the film I used previously. It's versatility makes it a good film for point and shoot, but it's also a great film for the more advanced amateur or serious student. I LOVE it! The only negative is that it seems ot be a higher contrast film and you on't get as wide a range of grays as you would get with other fi;ms, but for an amteur, this fi;m is usually sufficient, and it more than makes up for it with ease of use. If I get more grays, but have to make the print grainy because I need a 4+ filter, then it cancels out any impact getting more grays would give me, in my experience.

New technology loser.......2004-08-26

Traditional black and white films are still around (Kodak Tri-X and Ilford HP5+) at least for the time being. Either choice has better latitude and produces better results--dependent on the processing, of course. There is a learning curve to T-Max film to make good-looking pictures. Be forewarned.

Ugh..........2003-11-06

I hate this film. Yes, the grain is fine, but Kodak Tri-X grain just looks better to my eyes. Either film is fine for 8x10" prints, but the grain gets a little large if you blow it up more than that. T-Max is definately easier to find at places like Wal-Mart, but do yourself a favor and find some Tri-X.

Kodak's Finest High Speed Black and White Film.......2001-08-07

Kodak T-MAX 400 black and white film is a versatile, fine grain high speed black and white film still widely used by professional and amateur photographers. Although there are other films in its speed and price range that may be better, most notably the new Ilford Delta 400, T-MAX 400 still holds its own because of its fine grain and rich contrast. I will occasionally use it, and am still quite impressed by the fine negatives it produces, especially when it is developed in T-MAX developer. If one wishes to buy a high speed black and white Kodak film, and is not interested in pushing it to ISO 800 or higher, then T-MAX 400 should be your first choice.
