Amazon.com Review

Norcent's DP315 DVD/CD player is streamlined, compact, and really somewhat cute--not to mention a real bargain. That is to say, our experience with the player leads us to conclude that it gives you a lot for your money. That's not to say it's a perfect DVD player: the DP315 has serious limitations as a home theater component. But if you're after pristine audio and video quality, you probably won't mind paying more for a better player. The DP315 is simply a terrifically affordable starter or bedroom DVD player, a handy movie machine for the kids, or a terrific jukebox to spin your audio CDs or homemade MP3 or JPEG image CDs in the comfort of your living room.

Far and away the most irritating thing about the DP315 is its tendency to freeze up during video playback. Once or twice a movie it'll just stop playing, hold a perfect image for up to 30 or 40 seconds, then resume playing. It doesn't drop anything or forget where it was, but there's no question that the pauses interfere with movie viewing. Just remember: this thing costs less than many DVD titles. And, movies are far from its only game.

Pop your MP3-filled recordable CDs in the player, hit play, and you'll be able to enjoy 10 or more hours of music per disc, with sound quality that was far better than our computer system had led us to expect. It passes decoded MP3 signals through its digital-audio output, but, when doing so, pauses ever so slightly after starting each track; we recommend listening to MP3s through the analog outputs.

Want a slideshow from your favorite digital photos? Load a CD-R or CD-RW bearing JPEG image files, or play a disc recorded as a Kodak Picture CD for better slideshow features (fancier shot transitions, for starters). On a mixed-mode MP3/JPEG CD, you can even select a single JPEG image to serve as a background for the MP3 screen menu while you listen to music. In our extended testing period, we never encountered the freezing issue during playback of music or still-image CDs. We did, however, find that the player handles video CDs just fine, though it does not claim to play them.

Due to its small size and low-cost construction, the DP315 has no front-panel display, so all track searches and disc timing checks must be performed using the player's onscreen display. It performs track programming and repeat play with both CDs and DVDs (though there's no random play). The device offers folder and file navigation, and you can also cue a track from any folder while still listening to another. Access times are nearly instantaneous, even between folders.

Connections include composite-video, S-video, and component-video outputs, with seamless, high-resolution progressive scanning selectable from the component outs if you're inclined to feed an HD-ready television from this particular player. The Dolby Digital and DTS-compatible coaxial digital-audio output and a set of left/right analog audio outs channel sound to your surround receiver, integrated amplifier, or television. You'll need to use the digital out for surround sound, and please note that the player does not come with a coaxial digital-audio cable.

Taken strictly as a music player, the DP315 is easily a worthwhile machine. But even with the player's finicky DVD performance, we were still consistently amazed by its clear, vivid images and pristine, enveloping digital surround sound output. If you're on a budget or looking for a feature-packed alternative to high-ticket DVD or MP3 players, Norcent's DP315 has much to offer. --Michael Mikesell

Amazon.com Product Description

Norcent's compact, affordable DP315 features a NTSC video output, built-in MP3 file decoding, and compatibility with VCD as well as recordable DVD-R and DVD-RW discs. Top-of-the-line component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. With its diminutive size (about 12 inches square and 2 inches thick), it's an ideal for taking with you on vacation.

In the audio realm, the unit offers Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel passthrough, so you can enjoy immersive, theater-like surround sound with a compatible multichannel receiver and surround speaker setup (coaxial digital-audio interconnect not included). Playback options include an onscreen menu, parental lock, resume/memory play, A-B repeat, and picture zoom (with 2x, 4x, and 8x magnification).

1 out of 5 stars a dvd player that has trouble playing dvds............2006-05-11

not much to say about this little unit. as the amazon review mentions, this player is apt to freeze during playback for no apparent reason. very annoying. sometimes the freeze lasts 5 seconds, sometimes 50 seconds.
also, i frequently get disc read errors when turning the unit on or inserting a disc. restarting the unit generally takes care of that problem.
i understand this unit is geared more for the value minded than the performance minded, but even for $19.99 i want a dvd player that will play a dvd without any problems.

5 out of 5 stars This Item Works!.......2005-12-17

I bought this dvd player at Wal Mart soon after it came out. It was cheap, and I didn't have a lot of money to spend. I have used it for the past 2 years with absolutely no problems. I would recommend it to anyone. It has played every disc I have inserted. I can only count a handful of times where it has frozen up and that easily could be contributed to the disc being dirty also. Great, cheap buy.

5 out of 5 stars plays anything.......2005-08-29

i now have two of these - both have functioned flawlessly except for an occaisional grinding noise from the dvd drawer when it closes. this machine has played every disc i have thrown at it - and that includes a lot of homemade discs on various media. for the thirty five bucks or so that i paid i have to give it five stars. construction does seem a little flimsy and there is no readout on the front - but my philips which seems sturdier can't play half the discs i burn.

4 out of 5 stars Pros over cons, cheap but effective.......2005-06-05

First of all, if you noticed, most people who had posted reviews on this DVD player are simply reporting because they received faulty product. One person finally wrote a report 6 months after purchasing the player, only because it broke. So obviously, their motivation to write the review was simply to rip in to their faulty hardware.

A little history on Norcent: Norcent originally started as an OEM supplier for many name-brand electronic companies. What it means is that Norcent actually used to manufacture electronic hardware to be sold under a recognizable brand such as RCA, Philips, etc. They started doing that back in 1992. They still probably do.

So with the expertise in electronic manufacturing, Norcent decided to launch its own line in 2001, thus bypassing the brand-name companies to offer consumers similar products at a lower price since their product-pricing no longer have to worry about yet another tier of profit margin.

So with all that said, I think the Amazon.com's editorial review does a very good job at describing what the player does. Go ahead and read that if you want. So I'm simply going to describe my experience with it for the past few days after purchase.

First of all, I bought mine at CompUSA for 19.99 after rebate, because I simply wanted to use a dedicated DVD player rather than continuing to rely on my PS2 and its clunky DVD playback mode.

After taking it out of the box, it does have a somewhat cheap feel to it. But its silver overall finish goes well with my TV of the same color. Its bottom casing is metal while the top part is plastic.

It has 3 LED lights on the bottom right, signalling whether the disc inside the player is a DVD, Audio CD, or MP3 CD. Kind of a nice touch.

The on/off button leaves a lot to be desired because it is not very sleek or professional as it is one of those press-and-it-remains-half-way-out thing.

On to pressing the buttons themselves. They generally do not have a very satisfying "click" to them. The only comparison I can make with this is the difference between shutting a Mercedes Benz door and a Saturn door: it just doesn't feel sturdy. But then again, for $19.99, I didn't expect too much.

The remote's build also screams "cheap". It feels ultra-light, like a plastic toy basically. It covers the bare minimum basics, although very functional. I do agree with one user who pointed out that the player doesn't pick up on the remote's signals very well.

However, I have NEVER experienced the freezing and stopping other users have reported. Not in the past 3 days of playing. Among the movies I watched in the past few days include Underworld, Y Tu Mama Tambien, City of God, Reservoir Dogs. The player was very fast and responsive, and went through those movies without a hitch.

So in summary, at $19.99, this DVD player had been an absolute steal. I have not yet had the chance to test it out on a HDTV, but so far the player's performance leaves me feeling very optimistic.

Yes, the overall build of the player its cheap. But it's what's inside that really counts. $19.99!

1 out of 5 stars JUNK JUNK JUNK.......2005-03-28

It worked for an hour and it say "No DISC" for any valid discs. My philips with divx decoding works great and got this as extra for my bedroom and it is a REAL PEICE OF JUNK. the minimum rating i can give is 1 star otherwise i would choose ZERO STAR..
buy the philips one .. it is 10-30 bucks more and the shipping gets delayed because of the demand for the product, but it is worth the wait.
I searched everywhere and found most of these norcent players have the same problem with no solution, if you are lucky then u will not run into this problem .. but most of the reiviewers complains about the same problem!!

5 out of 5 stars Fine Amateur Version of Kodak's new saturated Ektachromes.......2001-08-06

Kodak Elite Chrome 100 is one of the finest slide films currently available. With regards to sharpness and contrast, it is surpassed only by Kodachrome 64 and Fujichrome Velvia and Provia 100 films; it is certainly as saturated as these, if not more. It uses the same technology which Kodak introduced for its new Ektachrome 100 VS saturated professional slide film; as an amateur version of Ektachrome 100 VS, it should be less susceptible to rapid changes in temperature than the professional version. From my own experience I have found that this film produces bright, bold colors. If you're interested in subdued colors, then this film won't be your primary choice.

1 out of 5 stars Where in the world is Jean Francois Champollion?.......2002-11-30

Two hundred years ago Jean Francois Champollion decpihered the Rosetta Stone and unleashed the mystery of Egyptian hieroglyphics. You'll wish you had old Jean by your side when you tackle Meade's pictographic nightmare called the "instructions." Any revision that Meade makes to the instructions should contain the following warnings: 1) Send your spouse, kids, and pets to bed. 2) Remove yourself to the most remote corner of the house. Bring along a large, but unopened bottle of asprin. .... The instruction booklet is 10 pages. The first half of the booklet contains 24 separate pictographs labeled A to Z (hey, I thought that there were 26 letters in the alphabet?). Oh, and just so you know, steps I and O don't exist. I think that Meade wants you to make them up on your own. Steps C, E, and F have nothing at all to do with the DS 60 so it is a mystery why they are included. Step "W" contains 16 different parts that require assembly. Oh, I failed to mention the joys of assembly. The telescope comes almost fully assembled except for the tripod. You'll need to disassemble almost the entire telescope so you can add a part or two. And, if part 5 points to a widget in diagram "T", then part 5 in diagram "U" is something completely different. I've assembled a lot of toys in my day, but by far, this one was the worst.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2002-01-06

I was given the DS-60EC telescope as a gift for Christmas and was excited to put it together and try it out. As soon as it was dark, I went into the back yard and had a wonderful time looking at stars, planets and the moon. Although I had little trouble putting the telescope together, one of the motors that came with the telescope did not work. I called Meade that evening and listened to a recording that told me to leave a message and that they would contact me within twenty-four hours. Almost exactly twenty-four hours later, I received a call from Meade inquiring about my telescope. Less than one week later, I received my new motor in the mail.

4 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Gift!!!!.......2002-01-03

When my husband asked for a telescope for Christmas, I was apprehensive about spending a lot of money on something that might not work. I bought this model based on other reviews, and it turned out great! We were able to get a really close look at the moon that very night. Due to the glare from Christmas lights on our street and the bright moon, we couldn't see much else but plan to search the skies some more in the future. He was able to get it assembled without too much effort, and the tripod is sturdy. The electronic tracking will take some practice to master, but we have only just started to use it. This definitely a real telescope, not a toy, and we are very pleased with it and looking forward to learning how to use it. I purchased the book "Nightwatch: a guide to viewing the stars" which is also very helpful. The author of the book criticizes the $...telescope as being cheap and flimsy, but I really don't think his comments apply to this model. I'm only giving it 4 stars right now because we haven't used it enough to tell how well it works on smaller and more distant objects than the moon, but I expect it will do quite well. I think this was an EXECELLENT INVESTMENT for two COMPLETE BEGINNNERS!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent telescope for the new astronomer.......2000-11-09

While many starting telescopes are cheap and flimsy, this one has high quality viewing and easy setup and operation, with a very sturdy telescope to boot. I have an 11 year old and have NO problem with him working with this, because it will easily hold up to his handling.

For those new to astronomy, you can simply point this telescope at any object in the sky and see it very clearly. For those who start to get more advanced, you can use the included software to track down exactly what those things in the sky *are*, and easily get the telescope to track them as they move across the sky at night.

I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a high quality telescope in this price range. It's a great way to learn more about the night sky.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT TELESCOPE.......2000-10-03

I LOVE THIS TELESCOPE! IT REALLY GETS A CLOSE UP LOOK ON ALL THE STARS AND PLANETS! DEFINITLY A PERFECT TELESCOPE FOR A FIRST TIME BUYER!

2 out of 5 stars Too Sensitive.......2007-03-23

This camera has it's good points and bad points as do all things in this world, but the bad points outweigh the good ones.

First the few good points: The pictures turn out nicely (focus kept in center) and the automatic features are great (the film loading and rewinding).

Now for the bad points: It's too sensitive -- mine got jostled once and now it only takes pictures every now and then (I have to press the shutter release a ton of times before it'll take a picture -- and sometimes it just wont take a picture) The focus is difficult to use since the viewfinder is blurry so it makes it extremely difficult to tell if you're getting a clean shot. (focus is best if kept in the center)

All in all, I do not recommend this camera I personally don't think it's worth the time, effort, frustration, or money.

1 out of 5 stars PIECE OF JUNK!.......2006-08-12

I bought this camera recently for a party I was throwing (after my other camera died and I was in a hurry to get something else) and it was an absolute piece of JUNK! The viewfinder was totally blurry so you couldn't even focus the camera to take a picture! We tried cleaning the lenses (even though that shouldn't have been necessary, because the camera was brand new; it came like that!) but nothing worked and I finally just returned it. Also, the stupid flash pops up and sticks way out which is not a good design. Stay away from this camera and go digital!!

5 out of 5 stars Great little camera, packs quite a punch.......2004-12-22

I bought the Stylus 120 right before taking a month long trip to Europe over the summer, and I have yet to see a single thing wrong with it. It takes GREAT pictures, and it is quite resilient. I dropped it a couple of times,it was constantly banged around, and yet it always functioned faithfully. The only thing that I can complain about was completly my fault: the manual focus got knocked around when I wasn't paying attention, and so a couple of pictures were out of focus. I would HIGHLY recommend this camera to both amateurs (I never even read the directions, the camera is that simple) and pros alike.

4 out of 5 stars Best value in its class.......2004-06-23

I'm an experienced hobby photographer who's spent many years helping people select the best camera for their needs.
This is an unusually good one for most people's needs.
The difference between a great camera and merely a very good one is versatility -
and versatility is achieved by striking a good balance between capability (features), ease of use (automation) and choice
(manual overrides for when the automation makes a bad decision, which they all do from time to time).
This model strikes a very good balance, and offers an unusually good lens - key to great picture quality - in this price class .

Pro's - 1) Unusually high quality lens, both in terms of construction (aspheric lens elements) and materials (ED glass),
makes for very high quality pictures across the entire zoom range. 2) Stepless zoom - most cameras in this class "step",
that is, they restrict you to a handfull of pre-determined points in the zoom range. So instead of, say, a "38-120" lens

as advertised, you actually have a "38, 50, 70, 90, 120" on these other cameras (Canon, Minolta, and many others).
The Stylus lets you zoom to any point in its range, which makes it easier to frame your picture accurately. 3) Multi-zone
metering detects and automatically corrects for backlight (putting the sun in the picture won't ruin your shot). 4) Spot
metering option let's you tell the camera that you want to concentrate on a small area (your friend's face) under difficult

lighting conditions. 5) Focus lock let's you focus on your subject and then reframe (your friend's face again, next to the
small tree in the foreground - you want your friend in focus, not the tree). 6) Flash modes for just about every conceivable
need in a point and shoot camera. 7) Relatively high shutter speeds for a lens-shutter camera (1/630 second vs 1/400 or so on
some other makes) 8) Advanced flash control adds the right amount of flash when needed, not too much, not too little
9) Small, lightweight, reasonably rugged, weather-resistant, clearly laid out controls, clamshell design protects lens when
closed.

Cons - 1) Zoom range doesn't go truly wide - you won't get a large group in without backing up. This is common to almost all
point and shoot cameras - most people will buy a longer lens rather than a wider one, thinking that "bigger is better". For
people who would rather get the group shot, or that shoot indoors a lot, try the Stylus 100 Wide, which has a true wide
angle lens in it (28-100mm instead of 38-120mm). 2) Clamshell design can develop problems with the electrical contacts (but
other designs can develop problems with their lens covers, so
you're trading one for another here, in my experience). 3) Red-eye reduction is oversold - they all have it, but it's more
annoying than effective. To avoid red-eye, have your subject look just to the side, not right at the camera.

In short, as a "second" camera for the enthusiast, or a "main" camera for the mainstream user, this one's hard to beat.
For the record, I have no relationship with any company or person in the industry.

1 out of 5 stars Film will not load!.......2004-05-17

We registered for this camera on our bridal registry and we actually received two cameras at my bridal shower. However, after spending over an hour trying to load the film, I gave up and went to Target to get help. The electronics clerk also could not get the film loaded for the longest time and finally he did something (he doesn't know what) and it loaded. We followed the directions over and over again but the film was so tricky to load that it isn't worth the hassle! We even opened up the other camera I had received in case the first one was defective, and that one would also not load the film. I still don't know how to do it and we returned both cameras and chose a different one. We were taking this camera on our honeymoon and we didn't want to risk getting stuck on the cruise with a camera that would only load film at random. For a brand new item, this was not high quality. Shop carefully!
