great sound at a great price.......2007-05-26
I've owned this system for two years now, and couldn't be happier. I use it mainly to watch movies with my DVD player, but also sometimes while watching satellite TV. The sound won't knock the pictures off the wall, but is very clear with good "depth", enough bass to rumble but not overpower. My room is 14'X 17' and this unit seems perfectly made for it. I can't imagine watching movies without it.
Wonderful Deal for the Thrifty Buyer.......2006-09-12
I was looking for a nice home theater system for under $100 and was having trouble finding one with an all around good consumer rating. I stumbled across this unit and was impressed on how many good reviews it got from people that has this system. So I went ahead and ordered it. We recieved it very promptly ( i was expecting it to take weeks but it really only took a few days. when we got it it took no longer than an hour to start enjoying surrond sound. we were amazed at how good the sound was for the price that we paid. all I have to say is buy a coax cable ..it really makes a difference when you are watching a movie...I hightly recomment this, you won't be disapointed.
Great system for a little room, or just for a simple room.......2005-10-10
I bought this system about 8 months ago. I like it, great sound for my room, and it even has DTS. At first I was thinking that 5.1 wouldn't be enough for my room, I was wrong! This system is enough for my room, I think 6.1 is enough for my living room. For my room, I'll stick with 5.1. I like the way this system makes my PS2 games sound, awesome sound when you switch to Doubly Digital pro logic. As for watching DVD movies, good sound, but one problem. Pleas!! Pleas!! Pleas!! do not use the cables that come out right out of the box, or cables that are worth less than 20 dollars! I am saying this, since I bought 10 Dollar speaker cables,and in 8 months they borned out. To the point where all of my speakers went out. So I bought monster speaker cables and connected them to my system, that fixed my problem...but it took me a while to put them back and it took some time to cut the wires and fix it. So if you want to save time and do not want your speaker to go out on you, due to a speaker cable burning off, buy them when you buy your system!! worth the money!! Also, be warned!! that if any speaker cable goes out!! all of the speakers will go out!! Pay the extra money and buy monster speaker cables. At any case, this system is great, you just have to buy good speaker cables.
This Home Theater Won't Disappoint.......2005-04-10
We've been wanting to get a home theater audio system for some time so when our anniversary came around, we decided it was the perfect time to purchase one.
I went online and did extensive research on different home theater options. We opted for an HTIB due to its cost and ease of installation/use. Since we already own both a dvd/vcr combo unit as well as a dvd recorder, we didn't want to purchase an HTIB with an included DVD player and in essesce, pay for another DVD. We narrowed it down to the Sony HT-DDW760 and the Panasonic SCHT-05. They are both good choices for an HTIB without an included DVD player. While the Sony HT-DDW760 has more inputs that its little brother HT-DDW660, it still only has two digital inputs which had us leaning towards the Panasonic. We went down to our local electronics store to listen to them. Unfortunately, they only had the Panasonic hooked up but it was enough to convince us. We purchased an SCHT-05 that evening.
The setup was relatively simple. All of the speaker wire goes into the subwoofer and out into the satellites. Panasonic sets up many of their home theater systems this way with the sub containing the amp for the whole system. Then, there is a single proprietary cable that connects the slim silver receiver to the sub. Several people recommend that you spend money to upgrade the speaker wire. We had some 14ga stranded speaker wire that we wanted to use. However, the connection slots for the speaker wire proved to small to use the 14ga. Be aware of this if you want to use heavier wire than what was supplied. We ended up using the wire provided with the system.
The three digital inputs were a huge draw for us to get this system and we haven't been disappointed. There are two optical and one digital coaxial. We had purchased cables on eBay and it made hooking up our a/v components a breeze. There are also generous RCA stereo inputs as well, if your components don't have digital audio outs. We used the three digital inputs for our digital cable, dvd recorder, and dvd part of our dvd/vcr combo unit. We then hooked up the vcr via the stereo RCAs.
There are four levels of subwoofer output. It's very simple to change. While I know there are more powerful subs out there, the one included in this system rumbles, shakes and vibrates the house capably. Also the speaker setup mode makes it easy to ensure that the speakers are balanced for your room.
We have an open concept floorplan which means that our living room area is quite large. The Panasonic SCHT-05 can amply fill the space with sound. The Dolby Digital and DTS decoding are excellent. We still are shocked at times to hear all the sound effects when we watch a DVD. It freaked out our poor dog to hear sound coming from so many directions. The system adds immeasurably to the movie watching experience.
You can fine tune the sound settings if needed but we didn't find it necessary. The Dolby ProLogic II works great. Since so many programs on cable/satellite are in stereo, the PLII converts two channel sound into surround. It makes the system much more usable.
In short, you can't go wrong with this system. While it doesn't have component video switching or similar high end features, it does an excellent job of what it's designed to do. The low cost and easy setup makes it a perfect addition to any home that already owns a DVD player. We couldn't be more please with our purchase.
Great sound, but if you have problems, beware Panasonic!.......2005-03-26
I love the sound on this machine, however, I bought a slightly older model from Overstock as a refurb (SA-HT05 instead of SC) and there were problems with dolby digital decoding (random high pitched noise on one of the channels). From what I've read on the internet, it sounds like only these earlier models had problems so this one should be fine. The sound is good (WAYYY better than the Sony products in the same price range, in my opinion), lots of inputs, but there's not much control over balancing or equalizer settings -- you can't really adjust any eq settings/balance/fading in 6 channel analog input mode, for example. So the product itself gets 4 stars.
With that said, Panasonic is SOOO SLOWWWWWWW to respond to service problems. The service center estimated a couple days, or a week if they needed to order parts. They couldn't figure out what was wrong, escalated it to Panasonic, who didn't know what was wrong, so they contacted a field rep, who didn't know what was wrong... Everyone said to expect progress soon, but except for the customer service reps, and then only sparcely, rarely followed up with me. Tthree weeks after I bring it in, after NUMBEROUS calls myself to "Cusotomer Service" (so-called) they FINALLY decide to replace it, which will take about another 20-25 business days (which I assume means 4-5 normal WEEKS). So I'm still waiting... I'm used to customer service like Dell; yeah, you wait on hold for an hour and a half, but when they diagnose that it's broken, they UPS next-day a replacement. I still don't understand why Panasonic didn't just 1) Establish that it is broken, not my fault, and then 2)send me a new one right away. I can't imagine how much they had to pay the service center, and the field rep, and the customer "service" reps, for the time they've put into this little case.

first thing first!!
Looks to me like the peson who posted on top of me doesn't know how to connect the system to a DVD player. First of, this panasonic model is now hard to find, so good luck to anybody who can find it new. Anywho, this home system has a lot of inputs, 2 optical surround sound inputs (for video games and DVD-recorders), two stereo inputs (the basic RCA red/white connection), and one Coaxial ( for your DVD system and other coaxial systems). The system is great, I don't have a clue what the first reviwer is talking about?? O_o easy to connect and the default system set ups it has are just awesome. You can even make Stereo sound like surround sound,due to the surround sound pro-logic set up the system has. One cool part is that due to the great number of inputs it has you can connect up to 4 systems to run on it all at once.
And about "how hard it is to connect the system to a dvd player." You do not need all of that stuff the guy on top of me was talking about. You just need a few feet of monster speaker cable, two optical cables,a few red/white RCA cables, a coaxial digital cable, and a DVD player. Also!! you might want to buy some speaker mounts later on.
This system also has DTA 5.1, Dobly Digital Surround 5.1, and Dolby Pro logic II. If you have a PS2, you might already know about how awesome it makes video games sound. Metal Gear Solid 3 comes to mind. Anywho, I would just go for this system for a normal bedroom, and do not believe the guy on top of me. Clearly, looks to me like he doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. Plus!! this system is great.
Avoid at all costs.......2006-03-10
I was excited at the prospect of buying a neat, self-contained package at such a reasonable price. Boy, was I mistaken! First, the total unit weighs a ton, so forget about sending it back. But why would you want to send it back? It has such a sleek design, right? And 370 watts of power!! And a pretty neat design, with the amplifier actually within the subwoofer, and the speakers are wired from the subwoofer, as well. But that's about the only good thing I can say about it. Why? Because first off, you know you have to buy a dvd player to go with it. That's okay. But there is no dvd player that I have been able to find that has an output for audio, video, front speakers, subwoofer, and rear speakers. That's right. In order to use this unit, your dvd player is required to have five outputs. Since none do, you wind up with front speakers only. Not much better than a stereo TV alone. The subwoofer will not work because there is no subwoofer output on a dvd player. Pretty lame. So this unit is not surround sound, it is not home theater, and it will cost you big time to send it back to Amazon, or wherever. Avoid it like the bird flu !!
