Amazon.com Product Description

Panasonic's broad TC-22LH1 is a perfectly flat, 22-inch liquid-crystal display in a widescreen (16:9) dimension that's perfect for viewing DVDs and HDTV broadcasts in their native aspect ratios. Intended for high-end home-theater use, the unit's 1,280 x 720-pixel resolution is enhanced by a motion-adaptive 3D-Y/C digital comb filter (which improves resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl), a high (500:1) contrast ratio, high peak brightness of 450 candles/square meter, and wide (170-degrees horizontal) viewing angles.

Active Light Control circuitry automatically detects the brightness levels of the input signal and adjusts the backlight accordingly, enhancing brightness levels for both light and dark scenes. The result is expanded dynamic range from black to white peaks, with crisp, natural pictures. Active System Control works in tandem with active light control to adjust the video signal according to the image contrast, further brightening bright scenes and deepening darker ones.

The set's LCD artificial intelligence takes convenience a step further than Panasonic's previous AI technology, providing real-time luminance distribution and boosting gradation in the areas containing the greatest number of image elements. This heightens the perceived depth, detail, and realism of backgrounds behind movie subtitles and of the brightest objects in dark scenes. Panasonic's Pixel controller lets the TC-22LH1 accept a variety of input signals and reproduces images with exceptional precision; it also handles aspect-ratio switching between 4:3 and 16:9 (letterbox) signals.

For direct digital quality and convenience, the TC-22LH1 is one of the first sets to offer an HDMI audio/video connection for hookup with a compatible DTV set-top box, DVD player, or A/V receiver. HDMI supports both multichannel digital audio transmissions and component-video color spacing for true rendering of high-definition video. It also supports the HDCP copy-protection standard. Using a special adapter cable, the video portion of the HDMI signal is backward-compatible with DVI-HDCP devices.

You also get two high-resolution component-video inputs, two S-video inputs, and two composite-video input with stereo RCA analog audio jacks. A stereo headphone jack fosters private listening, and the monitor also offers internal, two-way stereo speakers supported by 5.5 watts per channel. The monitor includes a standard, 181-channel NTSC tuner.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful HD television.......2004-02-17

Summary:

Fantastic High Definition (HD - 1080i) performance. Good to excellent Standard Definition (SD - 480p) performace with some minor reservations.

Detail:

Physical: This is a nice looking set, the silver with the chrome trim looks elegant. Fit and finish looks good. I think it looks better than the TC-32LH1. Speakers mounted below the screen. The base is secure and does not swivel. However, the screen does tilt forward and backwards from upright. The remote is small, handy, but isn't full of buttons, no backlight (except for the function selection). Detachable panels for hiding cables. Not a whole lot of room for manuvering thick audio and component cables behind the panels. If the panels are used I would recommend flexible thin cables with the smallest plug possible. VESA compatible for mounting. Outboard power supply. Mechanical switch for complete power off.

Features: Video settings can be saved for each device selected! Has MPEG noise reduction and black and white crushing capability (I set mine to "0"). Stereo enhancement, separate bass, treble and balance. No clock. No PIP. No 720p. No DVI (but has HDMI/HDCP). Two wideband component inputs, two composite/SVID inputs. L&R Audio output. No subwoofer output. Has WIDE, NORMAL, JUST (stretch the very edges of the picture, and FULL scaling capability.

Performance general LCD: Excellent black levels for an LCD. Better than a Samsung LTM225W. At or near the black level performance of the Toshiba 26HL83 which I think has one of the better "real world" LCD black levels. Very little smearing with movement indicating a fast response time. Based upon the Samsung LTM225W with a specified 16ms I believe the Panasonic is at least that fast and maybe a bit better. Viewing angles are good. Maybe not the *widest* but still good enough for fairly oblique viewing. Did not find a single bad pixel or sub-pixel.

Performance HD: Watched HD via a Zenith HDV-420 and a SciAtl 3250HD -- every signal upconverted to 1080i. I have no HD generator such as a B&K 1253. Exellent color (see SD/DVD below) which I suspect will be verified with the HDNet test patterns Tuesday morning. The picture is sharp with lots of detail. There is good detail and color even in low level scenes. Despite the rated contrast level (500:1) the effect seems to be much greater than that. There is a realism to the black levels that contributes greatly to the "beliveablity" of the picture. Overall, the HD viewing experience is the best I've seen from an LCD set.

Performance SD/DVD: Utilized a Sony RDR-GX7 with component out set for progressive. No video EQ settings used. DVE, Avia used along with various dics: Lawrence of Arabia (Superbit), Singing in the Rain (new transfer). Many of the DVE and Avia patterns were reproduced incredibly well. As best I can tell through the filters, there is no red, blue, or green push. The Avia flashing color bars are almost spot on with only the green flashin hue/tint (yellow/cyan) being just slightly off. The Panasonic's color temperature of "Neutral" seems to have the best overall color temperature performance. "Warm was too reddish while "blue" was too bluish. The "Neutral" seems to have only a very slight tilt towards blue. The only issues I have with the SD picture seems to be some residual egde enhancement (even with the 22LH1's sharpness set to -30), some "stairstepping" with diagonal lines, and a bit of what looks like "speckling" duing scenes with movement -- as can be seen in the Avia's moving Zone Plate pattern. None of defects are very annoying in my opinion and I haven't completely ruled out the source devices. None of these defects is seen when viewing HD (1080i). Using one of the 1080i upconverting DVD players may reduce or eliminate these defects (my speculation, not verified). Overscan was less than 5%. Overall, the SD viewing experience is good to excellent.

Performance OTA/SD: Good, fairly sensitive NTSC tuner, auto programming picked up all local strong stations and some weaker low-power stations as well. The NTSC picture was a bit soft with the "stairstepping" of diagonal lines noted but enjoyable with good color and contrast and should do nicely in a pinch.

Performance Sound: For a TV of this size, excellent. Plenty of volume. Clear highs and the bass actually has a bit of "oomph". The set utilzes some small woofers so it actually sounds pretty good for simple, standalone, stereo.

Performance Remote: Works well. Somewhat intuitive. No dedicated buttons for input device -- must scroll through. Tip: utilizing the channel up or down button takes you to the "top" of the list. If on Component 2, instead of scrolling through the other devices to get back to Component 1, just change the channel and then press the video button one more time to get to Component 1. Not very flexible for controlling other devices -- basic functions only. Some delay noted when pressing the menu button -- it takes a moment or two for the menu to appear. Fairly wide remote angle.

Overall: I think this is one fine TV: Fantastic HD picture, good to excellent SD/DVD picture, and the features work well. Only the SD/DVD issues keep it from being a full 5 stars. I'd rate it 4.5 stars. It's a keeper.

3 out of 5 stars Very early impressions + some words after 18 months.......2003-12-25

24 December 2003...

These are very early impressions of the Panasonic, as I've had it less than 12 hours as of this writing.

The TV seemed to look bigger in the store. My entertainment center dwarfs it. But otherwise it's a good fit for my viewing environment, as my couch is less than 6 feet away.

It has an ample supply of video inputs: two composite/S-Video (each can be one or the other, but not both simultaneously), two component video, and one HDMI. All five can be called up independently. There is also a built-in over-the-air tuner, but it is non-HDTV.

There are four viewing modes named "normal", "just", "zoom", and "full". "Full" expands the frame to the full width of the 16:9 display. "Normal" is the traditional 4:3 frame ratio shrunk to fit the display top-to-bottom with black bars on either side (there is a setting to tweak the width of this shrunken frame, by the way). "Zoom" is 4:3 enlarged to take up the full width, with the top and bottom of the frame cropped out.

"Just" mode deserves its own paragraph. It's similar to "full" but is designed to make a 4:3 frame look more agreeable when stretched. Basically, the middle part of the frame is stretched out less than the extremities. It's a very subtle difference, but it does indeed make it more pleasant to watch a 4:3 image stretched in this manner.

The picture is very sharp and clear--so sharp and clear, in fact, that the most minor imperfections in the signal will jump right out, whether they be noise in a broadcast signal, digital artifacts from something like a TiVo, etc. This is what made me waffle the most between giving this thing 3 or 4 stars. I may modify my rating later when I update this to a more complete review.

18 June 2005...

It's a year and a half later. The TV has grown on me, and I remain happy with it, maybe even a little happier than before. Its quality has not diminished in the least in this time. I give it 4 stars now.

One feature that I forgot to mention that I've since really grown to appreciate is the picture settings: brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc. These settings can be tweaked and stored in three banks: "normal," "vivid," and "cinema." This enables you to make different settings for different viewing situations and switch between them quickly. Indeed, you may not have to switch between them at all, since the TV always remembers which mode you last used for each input (for example, "cinema" for your DVD player and "normal" for your cable box).

The only thing that remains an annoyance to me is switching between all of the video inputs. There is but a single button for doing this, which rotates through all seven inputs. The on-screen display always tells you which input you've chosen, but the screen always takes a little time to come back whenever you switch, meaning you have to wait a bit to see which input you're on now. So switching inputs becomes a bit tedious, unless you happen to have a really good memory for what order they come up in the rotation.

I think that's all for now. I think this TV is an even better value now that the prices have come down further from the $2000 when I bought it!

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't Charge Dell Batteries.......2006-09-03

One thing that one needs to be aware of is that this does NOT charge Dell batteries, and therefore can't really be used as a replacement for a Dell adapter. I suggest you skip this overpriced item and just purchase a Dell charger (1/3 the price as well). Also, it seems to run quite hot--I've been warned that too much use might fry my motherboard.

1 out of 5 stars This is JUNK.......2006-07-06

I bought one of these about 3 days ago and it's already broken. I try to charge my ipaq1940 with the suggested tip and the adapter begins to continually reset my PDA. Not only that, but it drains rather than charges the battery. This is an extremely overpriced piece of junk, you'd be better off taking the large amount of money you would invest buying this product and consolidating whatever various devices you're trying to charge into one smart phone/pda/whatever that does everything you want.

4 out of 5 stars iGo Juice &0.......2006-05-08

I travel about once a week, and the inevitable finally happened... my adapter got left behind somewhere on my way to a presentation. The only adapter that Brookstone had for my Toshiba Tecra M2 was the iGo... so I bought it along with the dual power adapter and tips for my iPod and Blackberry.

Started by using it on the plane from East to West coast, and it performed like a champ... and I arrived with a fully powered laptop, ipod and cell phone. In fact, it was working so well that I let the guy sitting next to me power HIS blackberry....

I got back to the office... and found my original power cord.... but found that the iGo powers back up my laptop battery quicker - and yes, that worries me a bit but I don't see any immediate side effects. I did create a little bit of a buzz at the office... because all the other road warriors wanted to see the thing and how it worked.

The biggest minus is the cost... between the iGo, the dual power adapter, and the adapter tips for the iPod, blackberry and Dell Axim x50v I will need to power I am beating the heck out of $[...] dollars.

I really want to keep it, but am just not sure I can justify the cost for a replacement to power cords I already own. I could, of course, just use that kind of money to buy a bigger briefcase....

By the way, if you want to find out where the power ports in different carriers planes are, just go to [...]

1 out of 5 stars Stopped working after two months.......2005-11-09

I saw several people state that this product stopped working after a short while, but it seemed like a reputable company, and I liked the idea of a charger that I could continue to use if I got a new laptop, so I went ahead and bought it, taking my chances.

It began flickering in and out of power after two months, and now hardly works at all. I should have bought the IBM product to match my computer.

It might just be the tip which needs to be replaced, but at 15 bucks a pop, I don't want to have to replace these every two months.

Don't buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Very expensive and poor quality, better off with $5 USB charger.......2005-11-01

I travel a lot, especially to Europe, and hate taking lots of cables with me for the Vonage, router, laptop, cellphone and crackberry. The iJuice unit looked like a good idea.

HOWEVER, the unit just failed during my trip, leaving me stranded and badly caught out with no back-up. BAD IDEA

A friend switched me on to charging everything via USB. I just bought a cheap $5.00 USB charger for the Nokia, the crackberry charges via USB anyway, so I just needed to buy an ordinary laptop 110/240v adaptor and I was all set. Laptop and nokia phone all charging away at the same time.

Single point of failure is the laptop. However, Apple does a great universal adaptor (you can get UK./US etc plugs) with USB for charging Ipods for $20, all in one neat unit. You can just stick the USB for the Nokia in the back.

Seriously, don't waste your money, unless you use more than one laptop or really need a particular tip you can't charge via USB. Using USB is far lighter, far more reliable, you don't loose the tips.

1 out of 5 stars Stopped working after using it for just a few hours.......2006-12-07

We owned this camera for around 10 months but used it for just 5-7 hours.
It stopped working all of the sudden (no power)

Sent it for repair while still under warranty (but parts only, no labor!). $160 labor fee just to know what was wrong with it

Would not buy another product from Panasonic (they even wanted me to pay for having my camera sent back to me).

5 out of 5 stars Great Product.......2006-03-27

Great product! Great image and zoom. Captures color very well. Sound is good. Very compact. Good battery life. Still picture quality is ok. Definately recommend this product.

4 out of 5 stars Great Starter Video Camera.......2006-01-09

I really wanted a 3CCD model, but since I'm just starting out and need to buy other stuff, like a tripod, monopod, media, firewire adapter card, camera bag, etc. This fits the budget nicely and it is compact enough to carry it anywhere. Yes the USB connection does work, yes FireWire does work, although it took me a minute to figure out that a connection problem was the fault of the video software version I was using, not the fault of the camera.

4 out of 5 stars It does work with your PC!.......2005-12-27

My son bought this camera on his own this past summer to take videos of his friends skateboarding, etc. His desire was to get video editing software to add sound effects, music, titles, etc. The camera works great and does what is advertised. Always keep in perspective that a $300 something camera will not match up with the features and extras that a $1000 something camera offers.

The real reason for my posting this message relates to how to connect this camera to your PC to download videos. This is how it will work.

1. Ignore the USB connection stuff in the manual. Good for still picture transfer and webcam stuff only. Look at page 43 in the manual: "PC Connection With DV Interfac Cable". You must use this method to transfer video.

2. You need a "firewire" IEEE 1394 OHCI compliant card in your computer. I purchased and added a PCI Trendnet TFU-H33PI to my 5 year old HP XL773 computer that I also recently loaded Windows XP.

3. Here is the KEY. I bought a cheap SanMAX 4pin to 6pin 1394 cable. Could not get the camera to be recognized by the computer OS. With XP it should recognize the camera as soon as you connect it and turn it on with the camera set to playback mode. XP will treat it like new hardware the first time. I tried everything to reload the card software and search online for drivers and through forums for answers. Then I remembered that my neighbor does video editing. I took my sons camera over to his house and his computer recognized the PV-GS19 Panasonic camera right away. I then plugged my SanMAX cheap cable into his computer... NOTHING. IT WAS THE CABLE. I borrowed his Belkin shielded $25+ cable and plugged it into my computer and it WORKED.

Moral of the story. Don't skimp on the firewire cable. They are not all created equal.

5 out of 5 stars Small & Light.......2005-12-27

I was taking good video 20 minutes after opening the box.The camera is easy to use and you can compensate for dark scenes quickly by changing a video setting with the cameras joystick.I had no trouble copying video from the camera to my computer ( XP ) via the USB connection. The windows movie maker program worked fine.Be aware that Panasonic does not supply a USB cable with its camera.
