Flat Panel Television.......2007-01-10
I purchased this television to put in a cabinet in the kitchen of my home. I am very pleased with the color, sound and quality of the unit. I have it mounted on a roll out shelf and I purchased a mount so the television can be folded up for storage. The only small problem is that the controls are on the top of the set and I sometimes activate them when I am trying to put the television away.
If you're looking for HD gaming..........2006-06-19
...you almost certainly would do better with the Viewsonic 20.1" widescreen LCD, model VX2025WM.
I purchased the Philips 17" LCD Flat Panel HDTV-Ready TV for two reasons: to connect it to my XBOX 360 for High Definition gaming, and because the price was right. I had to return it to Amazon (which is prefectly courteous and professional with such matters) twice: the first set had a nonfunctioning headphone jack (no sound through headphones or any speaker I attached to it), and the replacement set would not display the HD output from my console. I have read of faulty HDAV cables being shipped with XBOX 360 consoles, so I wanted to make sure: I tested three separate consoles, and 3 separate HDAV cables. I tested all the available settings through the console's dashboard. The picture was the same: a screenful of distortion (the sound was fine).
The sound on this TV impressed me. It is not as good as you can get with even a $50 set of desktop speakers, but it is deep enough and loud enough that you wouldn't necessarily need any addition to enjoy what you're watching - something that surprised me, considering what we're told to expect from flat panel TVs.
For regular television, the picture quality is only moderately good. I appreciated the range of adjustable settings, and although the picture is generally very sharp, the colors generally didn't seem very well defined or realistic. The same held true for gaming through the AV components. Watching DVDs was definitely the best aspect of my experience with this product (both iterations thereof). Had I not purchased it primarily as a monitor for my XBOX 360, I may even have been tempted to keep it and be spared the nuisance of returns.
I intended not to star this review, because my encounter with the above two defects in this product was probably singular (although they occured on two different units). I have always had a mixed impression of American-market Philips products, and this unit will just be logged away with the others. The stars are there because the website forces it.
Enter the Viewsonic 20" widescreen LCD, model VX2025WM. You can attain HD-pedigree resolutions on an LCD monitor. The XBOX 360 dashboard automatically adjusts its display options to accomodate your screen. You would have to acquire the HDVGA cable - go with Monster; the Microsoft cable results in the oft-cited "washed out effect". Connect a pleasing $50 set of speakers (Creative Labs makes those), and enjoy your HD games in widescreen - your 4:3 games and DVD programs are accomodated as well. The picture is excellent, and it is Big! If you are primarily interested in HD gaming, and DVD viewing through your console or computer, and perhaps replacing your existing monitor while you're at it - and your immediate plans do not include installing HD Television in your home - the Viewsonic 20" Widescreen LCD, model VX2025WM is what you should get, and Amazon has it.

You can't beat the low price on this 17" LCD TV. The picture quality with HDTV or DVD-Progessive Scan sources is excellent. Built-in stereo speakers and FM tuner are handy features, but sound quality is mediocre, so recommend using with home theater audio system for your audio. Generous variety of video inputs. However, only one handles true high definition sources, a standard 15-pin VGA input which accepts either (1) the in-the-box included cable which has the VGA connector on one end and the three component video jacks (standard color-coded RCA type) at the other end, or (2) a cable with VGA connectors at both ends (not included) for hookup to a PC. For more than one high-definition source you'll need a switchbox (I bought one from an electronics store to connect my satellite HDTV and DVD-Proscan player), or a VGA splitter (for two PC's). All in all a great bargain.

I'm the type of person who is usually comfortable with electronic equipment that is on the verge of obsolescence. That being said, I'm pleased with the Philips Flat Panel HDTV I purchased with the intent of using it as a computer monitor/TV to sit on a fragile desk in my bedroom. I have watched a total of three movies on it. The sound and picture quality were impressive especially considering I haven't made any adjustments to the factory settings. In fact, I've only had to make a few decisions after being prompted by menus that automatically appear on the screen. The Philips is definitely user friendly.
There are only a few drawbacks to the set which I hate to mention because I'm using it primarily as a monitor when it was really intended to be used as a TV. The screen is prone to etching when images, such as the Menu bar on a desktop, remain static for long periods of time. The speakers also don't work with the computer. Maybe they do with a PC but I had to have a VGA to DVI adapter cable to connect the Mac Mini to the Philips Flat Panel TV.
I still give the Philips 17PF8964 17" model five stars because I was able to connect a progressive scan DVD player to it without reading the instructions. The VGA to DVI adapter cable was also inexpensive and easy to find. And the instruction sheet allowed me to focus on only those few diagrams that pertained to my particular compatibility issue. The set is also very light compared to CRT monitors and TVs with 17" screens. Plus, the sound and picture quality easily surpass that of the "nice" TV bought for the living room years ago. As for the quality of the HDTV component, it'll be at least 5 years before I decide to use the feature...
Awesome Picture.......2004-12-27
Got the Phillips 17inch HDTV LCD after buying a Sony 42 inch rear projection HDTV. Got the Phillips for my office so I could take advantage of HD up there as well. Ordered 2 Comcast DVRs as well, the Motorola 6412 dual tuner. I am in heaven.
The biggest plus for the Phillips is its picture quality. It is great on the digital channels and awesome on the HD ones. The analog channels are just OK as is the case with any high quality high definition TV.
One cautionary is that the HD component hookup uses the same input as the VGA monitor. A funky kind of cable is included with a VGA like plug on one end and a 3 cable component collection on the other. So if you plan to use HD and VGA without a manual cable switch forget it. You can do a VGA and plain digital, but this is an HD ready TV. I did not buy the TV as an extra monitor so I don't care, but thought I'd throw this in for those that are.
The speakers are what you might imagine for an integrated unit...i.e. OK. I have a small set of Cambridge Soundworks speakers (2 satellite speakers and a subwoofer) that plug into a headphone jack. Its not theater sound, but its way better than my 13 inch Sony or my PC for that matter. I believe this is the result of the Dolby virtual surround sound. Probably the best sound you can get without a true surround sound theater system.
I have a Sony progressive scan DVD player hooked up to the component inputs and the picture is just great. Its not as good as my HD progressive scan DVD player with DVI connection hooked up to the 42 incher downstairs, but pretty darned good. I got the digitally remasterd Star Wars trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed watching it on this TV...sound was pretty awesome as well. For me the only improvement might be a DVI interface.
In summary, this is the perfect TV for an office/small room. If you want HD in a small space...this is it.

A Pretty Good LCD TV, Though Tricky Setting it for Progressive Scan DVD Playing.......2007-02-25
I purchased this model through the Philips Outlet online site as a "factory renewed" item. I generally like the TV, even though using it to view progressive scan DVDs was not as easy as I had hoped.
One of the main reasons I got this Philips HDTV-ready LCD TV was for watching progressive scan DVDs from my Philips DVD player. Turns out you cannot just hook up the component/RGB connections and put your DVD player into progressive scan mode.
I had to call Philips (and was able to get through without hassle) and was told the only way to view DVDs in progressive scan mode on this TV is by hooking up to the TV through the VGA connection. After searching on the Internet I found a great outfit (AVD Gear) that had the component/RGB-to-VGA cable I needed. (Radio Shack did not have the cable and said the only way it would work was with a $100 conversion device.)
When making the video connection using this method, you also need a special hookup for audio. I had to get a RCA audio (red/white) to mini jack cable too. (Again, thanks to AVD Gear.)
Now, with all the correct special cables, the progressive scan DVD playback is amazing on this TV.
I just wish Philips has been more clear in their product specifications and user manual out the need for this special hookup. I don't know why they make it so difficult. One would think that one of the main reasons someone would want a HDTV ready TV would be for progressive scan DVD playback.
I have not bothered to order HDTV through my cable company yet because I don't watch that much TV, and would want a larger primary TV first, but this unit that I use in a bedroom works very nice with DVDs now that everything it set correctly. Regular TV viewing is just okay.
The user guide is also lacking on details about all the different picture modes (widescreen, fullscreen, 4.3, 16.9, zoom, super zoom) but if you play around with it, you can find a picture that suites you for whatever particular viewing you are watching. The remote is sort of lacking also. It only works with the TV. The remote that came with my other Philips TV allows me limited control of the DVD player and VCR also.
I would recommend the unit (and the Outlet purchase option I used), but just be ready to order your special cables! Once you do get it working with progressive scan DVDs, the picture is pretty amazing.

LCD technology allows screens to be thinner and televisions to be lighter and more energy-efficient than ever before. The result is television that not only fits on a wall, but fits in places conventional televisions cannot. The 17PF8946A's comes outfitted with Digital Crystal Clear III technology, a suite of picture innovations including Dynamic Contrast, green/blue stretch, and a 3-line digital comb filter. The comb filter removes blurred edges between colors and reduces dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).
A feature called Active Control continually adjusts picture settings at over 60 times per second for all inputs, correcting both sharpness and noise reduction. Auto Picture lets you change--at the touch of a button--the picture settings (color, tint, contrast, etc.) for various types of programming, including sports, movies, multimedia (games), or weak signals.
Auto Sound allows you to select from 3 factory-set controls and a personal control that you set according to your preferences. Use the factory-set controls (voice, music, and theatre) to enhance appropriate programs. Virtual Dolby surround simulates enveloping surround sound from any 2 speakers.
Inputs include 1 component-video, 2 S-video, and 3 composite-video connections, as well as a VGA computer input, which accepts signals up to WXGA (1,280 x 768, from 60 to 75 Hz). Side-panel AV inputs accommodate a camcorder, gaming device, or VCR hookup, and a headphone output (minijack .125-inch) lets you listen in private.

TV Damaged - Lousy Customer Service.......2005-10-30
I received a defective Philips TV - when I took it out of the box, I heard what sounded like a piece of metal rattling around inside the TV. I received three 33-page manuals (in 3 different languages)on how to use the remote control, but NOTHING about how to set-up the TV! I was able to attach the TV cable to this hunk of junk, but found that the SOUND wasn't working! After 3 hours on the phone talking with 3 different Philips customer service idiots (each time I called, I asked for a supervisor, and was promptly disconnected!), I was told to return the TV - at MY expense - to ARKANSAS, of all places! After this frustrating experience, my opinion of Philips (and their products) is sub-zero. I rated this item as a '1' because there is no '0'. I rate Philips, and their policy, as a 'minus 100'.
Great device and a great deal........2005-09-22
I bought this TV for my college dorm room. The HD capabilities of this TV are terrific, my Xbox games just flow off the screen, and dvd's look awesome too. Unfortunately, I don't have a HDTV receiver, so I can't watch TV in HD, but thats ok because the regular cable looks good on the screen. I also have the ability to connect my computer to the screen, but haven't had a chance to do so yet.
There are a million input and output connections and the whole device is just really well designed. I've found that the included remote is well designed and easy to use. The only minor gripe about this TV is that the speakers aren't that great, which should be expected from a screen of this type, just the way laptops have notoriously bad speakers. Simple solution to the speaker problem: buy a speaker system or simply a sub-woofer and you should be fine, or connect it to your home theatre system.
I'm really satisfied with this product, especially for the price I paid.
