5 out of 5 stars Smiling faces in unexpected places!.......2004-12-03

I took my printer with me to Haiti and took photos of hundreds of children with my trusty, shoot from the back of a motorcycle, Sony PSC P7. Then I printed them and gave them to the children. The first printed photo of themselves, ever. The initial photos were of children lookng a bit suspicious but then there was a near riot as we gave the completed photos back to the children Smiling faces, huge grins, something precious an image of themselves. Yes, I got a few shots of those faces and one that is especially dear to me is of a boy holding his photo and beaming. We take photo prints for granted and forget what an amazing thing it is to be able to capture a moment in time. I love my printer, it is easy to use, the supplies are lower in price now, about .25cents a print. I thought I was a little crazy to buy this and carry it in with me but it was one of the best things I ever did.

The finish on the dye sublimation is a zillion times better than on the ink type prints of other manufacturers. I tested by moistening, okay, spitting on my finger a little at the store and trying to smear the prints. Sony's did not smear at all. To me this is a key buying point.

Yes it took forever to print all of those pictures, hundreds, but it so easy that I got others to help, loaded in 10 at a time and did other things as they printed.

Do a search on the group I work for and you will see some of the photos I took. Especially the boy with the red bucket. I return in February and plan to give this same gift again in another small community.

My real work is at Clean Water For Haiti, this extra project is a gift to me.

Thanks Amazon and Sony.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Printer for do it yourself household.......2004-04-14

This is a great printer if you are using a good camera like the dsc-v1. The only thing is it takes 90 seconds for one photo but the photo IS worth the wait. Good quality.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing!.......2004-01-04

There are several reasons why I do not recommend this printer:

1. Lack of Customer Support. Sony is notorious for bad support. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried getting support via email, chat and phone and did not get any help.

2. Picture Quality. While the pictures are sharp, the colors are really off. When I have tried printing several pictures, they come out with a yellow tint. These same pictures were sent to an online printer and came back okay.

3. LCD Screen. Even though Sony makes the screen really easy to use, it does not always reflect the exact way a picture comes out. I found myself wasting a lot of paper because the picture on the screen looked good but then printed out too yellow, etc.

4. Documentation. The documentation they include with the printer is very poor.

I received this printer for Christmas and I am definitely thinking about bringing it back. It is definitely not the quality I expected from Sony.

4 out of 5 stars Lab quality prints @ Home!.......2003-12-23

"Wow!" That's just what we thought when we hooked up Sony's latest DPP-EX7 digital photo printer. The DPP-EX7 is an on the spot photo editor, borderless coated printer, and memory accessible device (no need for a PC). These qualities make it the perfect printer for quick high quality prints. Today Bytesector will explore the ups and downs of this printer. (full review @ Bytesector.com)

4 out of 5 stars Dye-sub printing at home!.......2003-07-10

You know you've got quality whenever you buy a Sony product. The DPP-EX7 photo printer is no exception. The sample photo this printer comes with will absolutely floor you. I have yet to produce a picture as beautiful as the sample, but I'm hardly the expert photographer. I think the trick to stellar prints is stellar photos. I take most of my digital pictures at a low setting (best for email and such) but the prints still come out great. No grain, no pixelation, nothing that looks even remotely like a home photo printer picture. Even pictures taken at 640x480 come out crisp, sharp, and beautiful.

The printer is a little noisier than I expected, but it's nothing unbearable. The print-time is also not bad. 1.5-2 minutes really feels like nothing, mostly because I don't just stand there waiting for the photo to print. It's always a good idea to multitask anyway.

The editing features are nice (basic ones such as cropping, lighting, saturation, etc.), as are the creative print options (calendars, cards, stickers, etc. - all from the LCD screen on the printer). I'm definitely a novice, though, so these options may not be enough for professional photographers or people with lots of PhotoShop experience.

My only "complaint" would be that the reds in the prints come out REALLY pink sometimes, like the bright pink in drugstore lipstick... Ask them to wear neutral shades of lipstick. And for those gals with naturally red/pink lips, you're out of luck! You will always look like you're wearing [$$$] lipstick.

If cost is an issue, I'd suggest the DPP-SV77, which costs about half of the EX7. The only difference is that the LCD is a teeny bit smaller and the unit is grayish/silver. You'll be happy with either choice, especially if you're looking for a stand-alone printer that produces photo lab-quality results. If you have a digital camera that uses memory stick media, you'll be even happier.

5 out of 5 stars Sony Photo Paper.......2005-08-17

The print quality of the Sony Digital Photo printer and paper is exceptional. The unfortunate part is, I inadvertently ordered 3 1/2" X 5" paper, thinking I got a great price.

The regular photo print size 4"X 6" is still painfully expensive, costing over $0.50 per print- more than twice the cost of 3 1/2 X 5. With a quick drive to a nearby store, 4 X 6 prints are $0.19 each in many pharmacies and department stores.

5 out of 5 stars Great Price.......2005-02-17

At .35 cents per print, no shipping charges, no tax, I am going to buy it ALL up!!!! Great Price.

2 out of 5 stars These are not 4x6 prints........2004-12-31

Do not buy these! I am so mad that Amazon told me these were the proper replacement stock for my printer. My printer wants
(and I want) bigger prints. Beware! I am stuck with all this small paper now! :-(

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Print Quality, But Way Pricey.......2004-06-22

Hopefully, the price will come WAY down on this paper, real soon. 50 cents per sheet for 3.5x5 is just off the charts in my opinion. But, I have to admit that this is excellent paper for its intended usage. The coating appears to work very well to protect the print surface and it's nice to get the print cartridge along with the paper. If the prices comes down by 30%, I'll be much happier.

Product Description

Fearless extreme sports enthusiasts are a special breed, and Panasonic engineered an entire line of aggressive SHOCKWAVE audio products to help you go farther, faster and stronger than ever - all to the beat of your favorite bands. This one even includes a digital AM/FM stereo tuner with 30 presets! Portable audio products with the SHOCKWAVE design are suitable for ultra-physical performance with their ruggedized, water-resistant construction. Panasonic conceived the SHOCKWAVE series specifically for active listeners, and special features like the secure one-touch lock and release system helps keep the top cover of CD players firmly secured, even when things get rough.

Amazon.com Product Description

Panasonic's SLSW869V ShockWave CD player/radio has a rugged aluminum shell and a thin, compact, water-resistant design for outdoor use. It has a one-touch lock-and-release system that is designed to play even when things get rough on the trail. The most important feature in this model is the Anti-Shock Memory System 4.0. This feature reduces skips before they even get to the memory buffer. It has an improved set of error-correction chips offering +100 percent and -75 percent error correction. It uses a digital servo in conjunction with a lighter and faster spindle motor that offers fast retracking speed.

For ultimate versatility, the SLSW869V has an AM/FM digitally synthesized tuner that ensures stations won't drift once they are set. You can also preset up to 30 stations, 20 FM and 10 AM, in memory. There are five preset buttons so you don't have to search for your favorite station every time.

A "hold" switch prevents you from unintentionally hitting "stop" while the CD is playing or accidentally changing the programming. In addition, you can save your batteries from drain with the power-saving auto power-off function. The batteries will last for up to 25 hours of playback. This model includes adjustable stereo headphones, an AC adapter, and a jogger grip. The Panasonic SLSW869V features 24-track random-access programming, repeat of one or all tracks, skip and search, and memory and recall keys, as well as resume play and random play.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money!!!.......2001-11-21

I was very disappointed in the product. The volume for the radio was too low to hear with any outside noise and the CD player skipped often. This was given as a gift, which I was asked to return. I tried to use it myself and was amazed at the poor quality. However, on a positive note, full reimbursement was made without any hassle. Thumbs Up to Amazon - Thumbs down to Panasonic.

5 out of 5 stars Great Features, Just a little pricey.......2001-07-16

When I was looking for a CD player, I really wanted one that includes a built in AM/FM tuner. I looked around and this was the only one I could find at the time. It sounded great with good features and a built in AM/FM tuner. And I had the [money] to spend, so I bought it. This is a great product. I am very happy with the CD qualiy, and the only time I could make it skip was when I tryed to. And even then it was hard. The radio was very good with the ability to preset 30 CHANNELS. Thats a whole lot. The only thing I was later mad about was that three weeks later my friend bought a CD player with an AM/FM tuner for ... less. So lets go over this once more.

Pros- Great sound Quality AM/FM Tuner w/30 preset channels 40 second anti-skip memory X-SBS

Cons- Pricey Shuffle button under lid

Overall, this is a great product with awesome options, great skip prtection and a good AM/FM Tuner. The ony real bad thing is its price. But these kinds of CD players are not easy to come by.

4 out of 5 stars Expensive, but a solid performer.......2001-04-23

I purchased this cd player several months ago with the thought that I "needed" one (ha!) that included an am/fm tuner, as well as a disc player. Since my main use for a portable for workouts at the gym, I looked for one that has reasonably good anti-skip performance and that is ruggedly constructed. And of course, great sound quality is still the most important feature of all.

In almost all ways, this unit has met my admittedly high expectations. It is very solidly built, is light on battery use, and includes such useful feature as a "hold" mechanism to prevent accidental button-pushing during play.... The anti-skip mechanism seems as good as any currently available, but don't let anyone fool you into thinking that ANY portable cd player is entirely skip-proof. Yes, if you run hard with this unit strapped to your waist it WILL skip. Moreover, if you engage in any kind of up-and-down repetitive exercise (for example, pullups) the unit will skip. Still, if a user limits the activity to easy jogging and takes at least some care to minimize rocking motions while exercising, the anti-skip performance of this machine is satisfactory.

Typical of recent Panasonic cd players, the sound quality of the SL-SW869V is quite good. Sadly, competitor Sony has decided to go with extremely low-powered amplifiers in their newest generation of cd players, figuring that light weight and long battery life are more important to users than is optimal sound quality. As yet, however, Panasonic has not made this mistake, striking a still-acceptable balance between size/battery conservation and audio performance considerations. Whether or not one likes the optional bass boost feature will depend upon one's tastes, of course.

The am/fm tuner is reasonably good, but potential buyers should know that since the headphone cord essentially acts as the antenna for this feature, the reception will vary in accordance to where the listener is located, the quality of the original signal, and the extension/position of the headphone cord. Getting static-free reception for some FM stations while exercising inside an urban gymnasium may sometimes be difficult.

Overall, the features and buttons are logically laid out, with but one noteworthy exception. The sliding switch that controls play mode (resume, normal, random) is located *underneath* the unit's lid, so you cannot access it without opening the lid. This can be a real headache under the following circumstance: suppose you play a cd using the "resume" mode, which allows the user to stop play and then subsequently have the music resume at the beginning of the track that was being played when the unit was stopped. If you keep the same cd in the machine, stop play for a while and then resume play, this is very useful. However, if you remove a cd stopped at say, track seven out of twelve and then replace it with another cd, the "resume" feature will still dumbly and dutifully begin the music at track seven for the newly inserted cd. Drat! You either need to remember to perform some back-and-forth button sliding *prior* to the insertion of the new cd to prevent this from happening, or you need to open the lid, remove the new cd, and reset the slide switch to begin play of the new cd from the beginning.

Of COURSE, the headphones that come with this unit are pretty bad. They ALWAYS are. Anyone interested in sound quality should invest is a good (or better) pair of portable headphones or earphones, making sure that the impedence of the model you choose is low enough to ensure adequate performance without the use of an add-on headphone amplifier. I have found that the best-sounding portable earphones are the expensive but awesome Etymotic ER-4P's, which give great, LOUD sound without an amp.

The SL-SW869V is not perfect, but overall, this is the best all-around portable cd player I have owned to date. And given its quality construction, I anticipate enjoying it for quite a while.

4 out of 5 stars terrific sound, good features and unbeatable quality.......2001-04-03

I've had this model for almost a year, and I don't have much negative things to say about this CD player. This is actually the SECOND Panasonic CD player I own, the first one was an older model purchased around seven years ago and still runs great, I'm expecting this one too will provide me many more years of faithful service. If you're the athletic type and worry about skipping, worry not. This model is equipped with a 40 seconds memory, I've used it while jogging, working out and tumbling down a hill(don't ask) and it never skipped a beat on me. If you listen to radio, you will fall in love with its built-in digital AM/FM tuner. Not too many portable CD players have a radio tuner built in? It also has a full-feature remote control (wire-based). Sound-wise, I have no complaints. All my favorite CDs sound crisp and powerful. Its Bass Boast system works very well. What else? The battery life is amazing. It runs for around twenty CDs on a pair of Everyday rechargeables. As good as it sounds, it's not perfect. The following is a few minor design faults I've experienced. The in-ear headphone came with the unit was literally a pain in the neck (well, in the ears). It was so uncomfortable I had to replace them with a same style Sony headphone. The switch between Random and Sequenced play is located UNDERNEATH THE LID! You have to actually open up the lid, and remove the CD to select between Random/Sequence. I know it's suppose to be a Sports model and all, but I'd still want to be random WHENEVER I want to. Don't know which crackhead enginneer came up with this brilliant design. Aside from the aforementioned problems, this model is perfect.

3 out of 5 stars skip-free cd, but radio not so great.......2001-03-15

I bought this player and was satisfied with the cd portion. Jogging produced no skips, this impressed me. The radio was not so great, with this device I could not get stations I got on my recently deceased walkman. This was disappointing, because there are so few players with radios at all. This was not worth the extra money.

The other point worth mentioning is that the headphones that came with it were designed by a torture expert and had horrible sound. Don't give up on this cd player until you try it with decent headphones.

    Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony Mavica CD500 combines the advantages and capacity of the instant-archive CD-R/RW format with advanced resolution and control flexibility. The Mavica CD500 features a 5-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, and a movie mode that shoots full-frame video.

    Step-up Value
Here's a Sony feature that adds value to this digital camera and differentiates it from other models in the Sony lineup.

product image CD-RW Media: CD Mavica cameras shoot directly to 156 MB CD-R/RW discs, so there's room for hundreds of images and movie clips for instant archiving.

    Optics and Resolution
Optimized for photo enthusiasts, the MVC-CD500 offers a 5-megapixel Super HAD sensor for image detail up to 2,592 x 1,944 pixels and print enlargements up to 20 by 30 inches. Get closer to your subjects with the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 3x optical zoom lens (34-102mm equivalency in 35mm photography). The Mavica CD500 also features a 3.2x digital zoom.

    Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on high-capacity 156 MB CD-R (recordable) and CD-RW (rewritable) discs, enabling you to instantly archive your shots. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows 98/Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

    Movie Mode
You can capture far more than still images with the MPEG Movie VX function. Most digital cameras' movie modes are limited to 30- or 60-second clips, but the Mavica CD500 can keep shooting until you've filled the CD-R/RW, approximately 6 minutes at full VGA resolution (640 x 480, 16 frames per second).

    More Features
Flexible exposure control is provided with aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual exposure modes. For better command of motion and depth of field, the Program Shift feature allows various aperture and shutter-speed combinations from within the auto mode. The Mavica CD500's five-area multipoint AF can also evaluate five separate areas of the frame and intelligently focuses on the subject, displaying the selected focus point; or, the user can choose any of the five points for manual control.

With single, monitoring, and continuous AF modes, the photographer can optimize focusing to the situation, which is especially useful for capturing action shots. The hologram AF illuminator projects a laser pattern on the subject to artificially create contrast, even in low or no light.

Multipattern measuring independently meters the light in 49 points of the frame to establish the optimum exposure, even when highlight and shadow are not centered in the frame.

    Other features include:

    Power, Size, and Contents
The camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery NP-FM50 (included). It measures 5.5 x 3.8 x 4.1 inches and weighs 1.3 pounds. This package includes the Mavica CD500 digital camera, battery and battery charger, USB and AV cables, 1 blank CD-R, 1 blank CD-RW, and CD-ROM with imaging software and USB drivers for Windows and Mac.

    5 out of 5 stars Graphics Designer/Photographer.......2007-05-06

I'm a happy camper. I purchased my SONY MAVICA MVC-CD500 digital camera in 2002 when it was first marketed. As of this writing it's 2007 and I use it almost daily in my work. It's been a great workhorse. It plugs directly into iPhoto on my Mac - transferring images is quick and seamless.

I've not experienced any of the problems other reviewers have mentioned. I suppose, like with ANY product, the occasional lemon comes off the line. My camera has given me years of perfect performance!

I don't use all the features: For instance - if I want sepia tone photos or special effects I take them into PhotoShop and work there. The photos I get from the CD-500 are crisp, clear and high resolution so it makes editing them a breeze.

This reviewer gives the CD-500 two thumbs up. It's the best digital camera I've used.

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this camera .. please, I beg you........2006-12-27

I had a Sony Mavica 400 and it worked beautifully for 4 years. I never, ever had a problem with it, and it went everywhere with me. I took around 8,000 photos with it and it was wonderful. But then it was stolen from around my neck by a gang of thugs in St Petersburg, Russia in 2005.

The insurance company replaced the 400 with this model, the MVCCD500, which I was very excited about getting - the next-generation model, with improved picture quality and more megapixels. How wrong I was to be excited.

This piece of junk lasted a total of 6 months before it suddenly stopped doing what it was meant to do. It suddenly and without warning wasn't able to access a disc that hadn't been finalised, and after changing batteries it wasn't able to access the disc. To top this off, it also now can't write any photo taken on 5 megapixels - all I get is a 'Disc Error' everytime I take a 5 megapixel photo. I now have to finalise the disc when the battery gets low, and I have to be very, very careful the back door (where the CD-R goes in) and the battery door don't open .

I relocated to the UK soon after getting this camera, and Sony UK refused to honour the 'Worldwide Warranty', even though I had the receipt and the warranty with me. As the camera came from Australia, Sony refused to even deal with me - they told me I had to talk to Sony Australia ... on the other side of the planet, and then asked me to leave their premises!

I am now struggling to take ANY photos with this thing. It is now out of warranty, only takes 1 in 3 photos properly (none in 5 megapixels), and to top it all off, the 8cm CD-R's are next to impossible to buy outside the USA. And you can't even mail-order them from the US - no shop will sell them overseas. Sony couldn't even help me to locate a supplier of the CD-R's in the UK, even when they featured the Sony CD-R's on the Sony UK web site. In response to my enquiry regarding the discs, I was told they couldn't help me and suggested I do a search on an internet search engine for them. (Gee Sony, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the help.) I eventually found one shop in central London that sells them. When this shop stops selling them, the camera will be a useless paperweight.

If you are stupid enough to buy this camera, expect it to stop working within a year of buying it, and expect zero support from Sony. In fact, just expect abuse from Sony when it stops working.

I have just bought a Nikon D80, and am thrilled with the brilliance of this camera. Buy a digital camera from a manufacturer of real cameras, not a company that produces junk. Obviously Sony have given up on this technology, and tough luck if you were fooled into buying it. My assumption is they are no longer supporting the Mavica technology and refuse to have anything to do with any customer that owns one.

1 out of 5 stars My $800 camera only worked for a couple years!.......2006-11-30

It was great, while it lasted. Although it's too heavy to take on every trip and take those impulsive candid shots. It fits in my diaper bag, but not my purse. About 6 months ago (after 18 months of ownership) we started having trouble getting it to turn on. My husband figured out a "trick" to turn it on (push down on the button while pushing the lever), which worked for a month or so. Then suddenly, the problem disappeared. Yippee! Now, with Christmas less than a month away, it WON'T TURN ON AT ALL!!! I cannot explain how furious I am. It's not like I can send it for repair and have it back by the holidays. My other complaint is with the batteries. Over time, they last less and less..... and take longer and longer to charge up. You will definitely need more than 2 batteries after a while. My next camera will NOT be a Sony. IT's not like we were rough with it; we treated that thing with more care than the baby... and it still busted. grrrr.....

5 out of 5 stars Least Expensive Media in Digital Cameras - Great.......2006-05-23

The Sony Mavica series started it all with the Floppy disk Cameras ( that are still the most popular camera for internet pictures.)
Starting with the Mavica MVC CD1000 20X Zoom Sony did it again..
Mini Compact disks, the CD1000 could only use read only disks - CD-Rs.
With the CD200 Sony set real lead in Media with a camera that uses CD-R and rewriteable CD-RW disks. General Cost 50 cents for a CD-R and $2 bucks for a rewriteable CD-RW.
Using the Small ring in CDrom drives the mini CDs work just like a normal full sized CD. Capacity from 150 to 220 Megabits, or 200 to 2500 pictures depending on your selected resolution for each picture.
With all the newer operating systems XP ect the Camera Scanner wizards and viewers make it Childs play to download pictures and look at them. The camera is easy to use, anyone can pick it up and soon be taking digital pictures.
The entire series of Mavica MVC CDs are great.. with the CD500 at 5 megapixels with upgraded Lazers and CCDs is the top of the line.

1 out of 5 stars Lots of problems.......2006-02-04

I have had a Sony Mavica for the past two years and I have been having a lot of problems with it. In fact I just got it back today from the service department in Tx and it still doesn't work. The screen went blank one day, just wouldn't show photos on the LCD. I sent it into Sony free of charge and a new LCD was placed in the camera. When I got the camera back there was a distinct color shift. The colors look correct on the LCD, but on all other devices my photos are magenta instead of red, which make my kids look purple. I can color correct in Photo Shop, but for a $500.00 camera it is turning out to be a real boat anchore. Save your money, buy anything but Sony. The second round of service cost me a whopping $223.00. Which now makes my boat anchore worth $723.00.

5 out of 5 stars SanDisk Cruzer PocketCache Backup Software.......2007-07-22

Works great! I was so please with the ease of use that I bought two more similar SanDisk flash drives, with different capacities.

There did seem to be one small fluke with the Trial version of the PocketCache backup software. The trial version of the backup software, PocketCache, claims to do incremental backups (i.e. only backs up files that have changed since the previous snapshot backup) but when I tried this the second snapshot backup seemed to take just as long as the first, even though only a few files had been changed. However, the next time I did a snapshot backup indeed it took only a few seconds, as it should, and only added a few KB to the size of the backup file. If this continues to work as it should, it could be a very convenient solution to maintaining current backups of your large and frequently updated folders, such as your My Documents folder.

    5 out of 5 stars Universal recognition.......2007-05-13

I use this USB stick on a number of computers without any problems, including MacBook Pro (OS X 10.4), WinXP, and Win98. I had to download a driver from the SanDisk website for Win98, but that's true of any USB device for Win98. It's even detected by WinXP running inside of OS X.

The free security software that comes with it is a great bonus. As great as everything works, I would buy a larger capacity (1 GB or more) if I were buying it now because of how much I use this device.

5 out of 5 stars SanDisk Cruzer Micro with Skins........2007-04-10

Comes with 3 colorful, interchangeable slip over skins. Small size, compact design, minimal thickness, and overall lightweight. Not too bulky or lenghty compared to other similar products. Full plug-n-play operation; drivers required for Windows 98SE install with a minimal use of hard drive space - does not install non-essential hardware or web based advertisements. SanDisk provides excellent customer support if needed. Great product, great buy, great Amazon.com!

    3 out of 5 stars Small drive.......2007-04-04

This is a small drive which is nice. It is narrow enough to plug in two at the same time without having it block adjacent ports. However the write speed seems somewhat slower than some of other brands. It seems especially slow when transferring multiple files in multiple folders - 30 minutes for 50 megs. But it is faster if the files are all zipped together first - about 2-5 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice USB.......2007-03-24

Fancy stuff, 2 color skin, small enough, with an atach that alows you put it in your neck. Very good.
