Armed with high-quality Carl Zeiss optics, ISO sensitivities of 100/200/400/800 and shutter speeds of up to 1/2000 second in auto mode, the DSC-F717 produces stellar results, even in the most demanding of shooting situations.PRODUCT FEATURES: Multi-Point Auto Focus; Memory Stick Media; Slow Shutter Noise Reduction; Hologram AF Low Light Laser Focusing Assist; Multi-Pattern Measuring; Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar Lens; NightShot.

Amazon.com Review

It takes two hands to hold Sony's new DSC-F717, which you'll need to use all the many features packed into this digital camera. The F717 captures images at up to 5.2-megapixel resolution--2,560 by 1,920 pixels--which allows for prints of 11 by 14 inches or even greater.

Images are crisp, colorful, and deep with detail. With USB 2.0 support, transfers to the PC zipped by and can be set to dispatch automatically. The large, autofocus Carl Zeiss lens zooms optically at 5x, with another 2x in digital mode. Atop the lens, the automatic flash pops open when needed. It also performs preflash metering and corrects the amount of light sent to create shots with the best possible exposure.

This aids the NightFraming mode, which incorporates the camera's NightShot infrared technology, and can help with taking optimal shots in low-light or no-light situations. If you've never used an infrared viewer before, you'll be impressed by the additional photo opportunities it provides, like snapping shots of teenagers stealing your jack-o'-lanterns and catching them orange-handed.

NightShot can also be used with the camera's movie-capturing mode. The audiovisual movies can be played back full screen with the HQX mode; we played our movie at 1,280 x 1,024 and could only find minor pixilation around the edges.

Video size is limited only by the capacity of the Sony Memory Stick inside the camera. The F717 ships with a 32 MB stick, so an upgrade to a larger size is recommended. It comes with a shoulder strap, but we also recommend buying a case to protect your investment. Not a camera for beginners, the F717 does everything you'd expect from a high-end digital camera. --J. Curtis

Amazon.com Product Description

Combining point-and-shoot convenience with a host of manual photographic controls, the Sony DSC-F717 can help expand your creative palette for better photographic results. Armed with high-quality Carl Zeiss optics, ISO sensitivities of 100 to 800, and shutter speeds of up to 1/2,000 in auto mode, the DSC-F717 produces stellar results, even in the most demanding shooting situations. The DSC-F717 is an update to Sony's popular DSC-F707, featuring a number of additions and improvements, including a new manual focus and manual zoom ring, hot shoe for external flash units, USB 2.0 support, and improved startup and shot-to-shot speed.

Step-up Value
Here's a Sony feature that adds value to this digital camera and differentiates it from other models in the Sony lineup.

product image Hologram Autofocus (AF):Projecting a Class 1 laser patter, Hologram AF reads the contrast between the pattern's edge and the subject for precise focus, even in low- or no-light conditions.

Optics and Resolution
The Sony DSC-F717 features a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens with 5x optical and 2x digital zoom (for a 10x total), an f2.0 maximum aperture, and a focal range of 9.7-48.5mm (equivalent to 38-190mm). It contains a 5-megapixel (effective) Super HAD CCD, or 5.2 million gross pixels.

More Features
The DSC-F717 uses Sony's NightShot technology, the same feature seen on Sony's camcorders, which uses infrared illumination and an infrared filter to take photos in complete darkness. The NightFraming system provides infrared light as a composition assist, and utilizes hologram autofocusing and preflash exposure metering for consistently great shots, even in low- or no-light conditions.

Picture quality is enhanced with clear-color noise reduction, which reduces color noise, and slow-shutter noise reduction, which captures and subtracts CCD noise from long exposures.

Other features include:

Movie Mode
In movie mode, the DSC-F717 produces color digital videos in multiple creative formats, including 320 x 240 (high quality), 320 x 240 (normal), and 160 x 112. You can fill up the Memory Stick with digital video, even with the new high-quality mode (which was limited to 15 seconds on the DSC-F707). Another movielike feature is called ClipMotion, which will take 10 images and put them into an animated GIF.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on Memory Sticks, Sony's proprietary memory card format. The included 32 MB stick holds approximately 23 images at the camera's standard 5-megapixel setting (2,560 x 1,920 pixels). Memory Sticks are reusable, but if you tend to take more than 23 images per outing, then you'll want a bigger card. A 128 MB stick is a great size for this camera, storing around 70 images.

Power, Size, and Content
The DSC-F717 uses a proprietary rechargeable InfoLithium battery (model FM50), which should provide 3.5 hours of use per charge (Sony estimate). The camera measures 4.75 by 2.75 by 6 inches and weighs 24 ounces with battery and Memory Stick. This package includes the DSC-F717 digital camera, InfoLithium NP-FM50 rechargeable battery, AC adaptor, AV output and USB cables, shoulder strap, lens cap, 32 MB Memory Stick, printed manual, and CD-ROM featuring Pixela ImageMixer and drivers for Windows and Mac.

3 out of 5 stars Sony will still fix the fog issue........2007-08-01

Cam started taking foggy pics after three years. Called up Sony and they said it was something about a lens out of line and they would repair it totaly free(shipping as well). Pretty good customer service on Sony's side.

2 out of 5 stars My camera failed.......2007-05-22

After about 3 years and less than 500 pictures taken my DSC-F717 failed terribly. I never dropped it, never got wet, always stayed in a dry warm place, not to hot not to cold. No one else handled it. Not sure if I can call it a "white fog" problem or else. Last time I was taking pictures it took a long time to get the picture every time and it started having horizontal lines running across the screen without allowing to see anything. Today the camera failed to see an image completely. Some horizontal "ghost" and lines that move across the viewer screen and the screen is completely dark, although the charge minutes remaining indicator is appearing and I can view my taken pictures as well, but when I put it on "take photo" mode, the screen is black with sometimes lines running through it. How do I describe the problem otherwise? It is like if the camera has lost vision completely. It works, charges, takes pictures, but it can not see, the pictures come out either totally dark without any image or with some violet ghost light and no image whatsoever. When I point the camera to an object, the screen is dark or dark with horizontal runnning lines or some violet ghost moving across the screen. Of course, I made sure I removed the cap and etc. I also did RESET and changed the battery, but no help. June 2007 UPDATE: it appeared to be a failure with all or most SONY cameras, just like a pre-programmed timed failure. There was a class action against SONY and they set up a recall program and I shipped my camera to them (SONY paid the shipping bth ways as a part of the recall program) and they fixed it and sent it back to me.

3 out of 5 stars Great Camera For The First 3 Years.......2007-05-11

I bought this camera in March 2003 and it has taken many great photo's. Suddenly, in late 2006, some photo's all had the "white fog" problem and it soon completely failed with all photo's having the problem. I just found out today that this is a known problem and am trying to get a repair. I do like this camera - when it works, it does everything I want in a digital still camera. If I can't get it repaired, then it's bye bye Sony. Wish me luck.

4 out of 5 stars Sony Does Free Repair on White Fog!.......2007-03-23

After almost 4 years of use, I had the white fog too. I was concerned after reading some of the reviews that I would have to pay for a repair. I am happy to report that Sony is taking care of all shipping and repair costs! If anyone is having the white fog problem, go to Sony's website and call their customer service number. It only took me 10 mintues to get it taken care of! This has been a fantastic camera. I only gave it 4 stars because it is a little bulky to carry. I think it is worth it for the great pictures it takes!

3 out of 5 stars Awesome - BUT WILL BREAK!!!.......2007-02-27

DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA. Although, it is an awesome camera and will take amazing pictures, it will without a doubt break after 2 or 3 years of use for no reason whatsoever. I bought this camera brand new about 3 years ago, and absolutely LOVED it. The pictures were amazing...crisp, colorful etc.

BUT...There are deffective pieces that are used in this camera that have not been recalled by sony. Google it, you'll find plenty of reading material about it.

I used my camera about 3 weeks ago and everything was fine...took it out again about a week later and it would not work. The pictures were over-exposed regardless of any settings I used. This was not user error...I've had this camera for 3 years and used it all the time, I knew this camera about as well as anyone could...the camera just stopped functioning properly. I've given up trying to read online how to fix it. It's a bit out-dated anyways at this point and instead I'm looking at an upgrade. I recommend Canon or Nikon. They may cost more, but at least they'll last.

Hope this helps. It's a shame Sony won't correct their problem...otherwise I'd be upgrading to a new Sony instead of switching brands.

It showcases superb functionality and the most advanced technology offerings available from a name you know you can trust: Sony. Amazon.com Product Description

Stay ahead of the digital curve with the Sony DSC-F707. Showcasing superb functionality and some of the most advanced technology currently available, the DSC-F707 combines a 5.24-megapixel CCD, a swivel Carl Zeiss lens, hologram AF laser focus assist, and Sony's NightShot technology, which enables you to shoot infrared photos.

Optics and Resolution
The Sony DSC-F707 features a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens with 5x optical and 2x digital zoom (for a 10x total), an f2.0 maximum aperture, and a focal range of 9.7-48.5mm (equivalent to 38-190mm). It contains a 5.0-megapixel (effective) CCD, or 5.2-million gross pixels.

More Features
The DSC-F707 uses Sony's NightShot technology, the same feature seen on Sony's camcorders, which uses infrared illumination and an infrared filter to take photos in complete darkness. The night-framing system provides infrared light as a composition assist, and utilizes hologram AF focusing and preflash exposure metering for consistently great shots even in low- or zero-light conditions.

Picture quality is enhanced with clear-color NR (noise reduction) that reduces color noise and slow-shutter NR that captures and subtracts CCD noise from long time exposures.

Movie Mode
In movie mode, the DSC-F707 produces color digital videos in multiple creative formats, including 320 x 240 (high quality), 320 x 240 (normal), and 160 x 112. You can fill up the Memory Stick with digital video, but you are limited to 15-second movies with 320 x 240 mode. Another movielike feature is called ClipMotion, which will take 10 images and put them into an animated GIF.

The limited resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on Memory Sticks, Sony's proprietary memory-card format. The included 16 MB stick holds approximately 11 images at the camera's standard 5-megapixel setting (2,560 x 1,920 pixels). Memory Sticks are reusable, but if you tend to take more than 11 images per outing, then you'll want a bigger card. A 128 MB stick is a great size for this camera, storing around 70 images.

To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera--your computer should automatically recognize the camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive. If you own a Sony desktop or laptop, your computer may also have a built-in Memory Stick reader, which makes transferring as easy as reading a floppy disk.

Power
The DSC-F707 uses a proprietary rechargeable Infolithium battery (model M).

Size
The DSC-F707 measures 4.75 by 2.75 by 6 inches and weighs 25.06 ounces with battery, Memory Stick, lens cap, and shoulder strap attached.

Other features include:

Contents and Recommended Accessories
This package includes the DSC-F707 digital camera, Infolithium M battery, AC adaptor/in-camera charger, AV output cable, USB cable, shoulder strap, lens cap, 16 MB Memory Stick, printed manual, and CD-ROM featuring MGI PhotoSuite and drivers.

5 out of 5 stars The best photographic experience .......2007-07-05

I've this camera since 2001 the cost was 762$. The camera has been worth every dollar I paid. Everytime I take pictures and share them with friends they get really impressed. I've taken pictures like a pro. I bought a optional mounted flash and in a enclosed space and pointing the flash to the ceiling I've taken the most vivid pictures I could dream of. I've captured the most wonderful still moments of a party with incredible detail. The optical zoom allows me to get a close up of a face from my 6th floor apartment building down to the street. I've thought of buying a new one just because of obsolence you know! but It's gonna be difficult to find another camera that can give me so much fun.

1 out of 5 stars Ms. Buyer.......2007-04-13

The camera worked for exactly one month and then it stopped focusing and when I tried to get it repaired I was told it would cost more than it was worth to fix it. I spent 400.00 for one month's worth of use.

5 out of 5 stars Best pics I've ever taken using this camera.......2007-01-08

I have owned the DSC F707 since it became available at Best Buy. It was more money than I planned to spend but I am sure glad I decided to do so. I have taken 1000's of pictures and printed them on my printer and I am always amazed at the quality of the prints. Always used a SLR before so I was leary of this camera but soon found it to be a dream to work with. It seems I can do almost anything I need to do with this camera and it never lets me down. I have several 128mb San Disks but I would like to find a couple 256mb or 512mb if they are made for this camera. Does anyone know where I can get these? Overall, excellent camera!!

3 out of 5 stars camera damage due to heavy telephoto lens...........2006-08-12

First of all, I've owned this camera for approx. 4 yrs and have had some success in producing quality pictures. However, within the last year, I purchased the only telephoto lens made for the camera which is quite heavy to say the least. I believe, because of the weight, the lens has caused damage to the camera... partially separating the manual focus cylinder from the body of the camera.
I've discussed with Sony and got little satisfaction. All they will do is refer me to a contracted vendor to repair it at substantial cost since I did not have an extended warranty.
HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM, AND IF SO, CAN THEY SHARE WHETHER OR NOT IT EVER GOT RESOLVED?

ALSO, MY ACTION SHOTS USUALLY RESULT IN BLURRED IMAGINES. WHAT CAN BE DONE TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE?

Thanks,
Roger

5 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good.......2006-04-29

I've had this camera since 2002 and I really like it. Still great after all these years. I've done enough photography to get very positive comments on my artistic shots.

Pro:
-Holds a lot of photos
-High quality images
-Easy to use
-Long battery life
-New memory cards can be programmed in the camera, handy when on the road and the memory card is corrupted
-Great color
-Movie features picks up sound nicely, but not background noise

Con:
-Sometimes wipes out the memory card, losing all photos (recent research on this suggests this is due to sensitivity to hot and cold)

Bottom line: a great buy and worth the money. Also recommend that you buy the Sony memory stick mouse to go with it.
