Great quality and value for DVD recording.......2003-02-14

I've been using these rewritable DVDs for awhile with my Sony RZ22 desktop computer, which has a DVD+-RW drive. So far I've had no problems with transfering movies to the TDK DVD-RW media, and I've had no problem viewing the transfered movies on my Sony laptop, the desktop, or my 4 year old Sony DVD player attached to my TV. This allows me to carry DVD backups of some of my rare / out-of-print DVD movies for viewing on the road, without having to risk losing the originals or incur the high expense of DVD-R one time write only media.

Needless to say I'm very happy with the TDK DVD-RWs.

I'm planning on purchasing more of these in the near future rather than the DVD-Rs I've used in the past, as the TDK DVD-RWs offer much better value as they can be reused many times.

Great unit . . Lousy Tech Support/Service.......2004-07-19

I have had a philips hdr312 TIVO unit for about 18 months. I LOVE TIVO. It is amazing and my family are all TIVO lovers. Even my wife, who hates all my electronics, loves tivo. The pause, rewind and Fast forward are awesome. We never start to watch our show until 20 minutes into it so we can zoom through comercials and still end at normal time.

Now the negative . . my units modem went bad, I sent it to Philips, cost $99 + 25 for shipping. Recieved it back 2 weeks later saying "no repair made, no problem found". Unit was still broken, called service and they agreed I should ship it back (another $25). Again, 2 weeks later returned "no repair made, no problem found". Agian I called philips, they agreed and said they would swap unit with a refurbished unit. I asked that they pay for shipping, they agreed and told me I would recieve a UPS call tag via email with 3-5 days. 3 weeks later and a dozen phone calls, still no call tag and each time I called I was promised by a supervisor I would get it the next day. One Tech support guy told me he's seen this take up to 30 days to get a UPS call tag and suggested I just pay for shipping myself if I do not want to wait. I asked them how is it that if I wanted to return something to L.L. BEAM, UPS would be at my house the next day, yet philips can't seem to get one to me for 3 weeks now. His response "were not L.L.BEAM"

At that point, I finally researched the company and contacted the President of the US division. He was wonderful. He was appauled at my story and within 1 hour of talking to him, (still amazed I got him on the phone)I had someone call me to inform me they were shipping overnight a brand new HDR612(The next model up). The unit arrived Friday, but I was not home, so I am waiting for redelivery tommorow.

I was happy to see management was very upset with the service I recieved and how quickly they reacted to my situation. Hopefully, this might shake up the service department and no one else will go through what I went through.

12 out of 14 work just fine!.......2004-07-09

I see quite a few comments on this page about modems and hard drives dying on Series 1 or Series 2 Philips DVR's (aka, Tivos). Between my family and friends, I know of 12 Tivos that have had NO hard drive or modem problems whatsoever! The first one was purchased almost 4 years ago, too!
The two Tivos that we have had problems with are both Philips Series 1 models. Both have had modem failures. Both have been connected to phone lines that have experienced surges -- my brother's during a thunderstorm and mine due to a 40+ year old wall jack that corroded. I think the folks with multiple Tivo failures need to look at their phone systems!
I do agree, though, that having to pay $80 just to talk to a techie about my dead modem was a bit excessive. I will not do that again. $25 or $60 modem replacement kits are available.

Tivo great, Phillips stinks........2003-12-02

No doubt Tivo is the invention of the millenium, if you love TV (especially sports) like I do. But Phillips Tivo units are the worst electronic product I think I have ever purchased. There is a reason their warranty is 'limited' and after 90 days you will pay something to get it fixed. Every Phillips Tivo unit I've had, including the new 7000 unit, has broken in under a year, but over the 90 day full guarantee. And don't think you are actually going to talk to someone at Phillips, not without giving them your credit card # you aren't. Unfortunately, it appears the new Directv Tivo units are made by Phillips. Ugh. Bad choice, Directv.

The best electronics device in decades!!.......2002-12-25

I guarantee, TiVo will forever change the way you watch TV:

* phone rings? No problem - just hit pause.
* show on late and you have to get up early? No problem - just a couple of clicks to the show, hit select, and bingo, you got it!
* have a favorite actor? Super - just tell TiVo the name and voila you got movies he's in.
* don't even know what you'd like? Fine - TiVo will pay attention to what you watch and record shows that you will probably like.

TiVo is the bomb! Instead of being at the mercy of the networks, there will *always* be something good on TV...TV *your* way.

Do yourself a *big* favor and get a TiVo.

Don't get the Lifetime service subsciprion........2002-12-20

I love this machine. I can't imagine living with out it. But rather than list its wonderful features, I want to provide you with a warning.

When you buy your unit, you have the option of getting a service subsciption that turns your Tivo into a very smart Tivo indeed. You can pay per month, or buy a "lifetime" subscription. Don't buy a "lifetime" service subscription because the hard drive can go bad fairly easily. Furthermore, the term "lifetime" is deceptive. If the machine dies, so does the subscription. If you upgrade to a newer, better machine, you'll have to buy a new subscription. Note: you can buy upgrade/replacement kits for the hardrives on the these machines, but they are almost as expensive as buying a new unit. So don't buy a lifetime subscription. Another Note: you don't need the service for the basic machine to work; you need the subscription for the advanced features -- like 'season passes' to work.

Awesome HOTAS.......2007-05-10

Just recieved the x45 and I must say it is far more responsive than the newer x52 and x52pro! The rudder control on the throttle is much better than a twist joystick. No problems downloading and installing the drivers orSST software from Saitek. The CD software is no good. Up and running with FS2004 in 10 mins. The x45 is better suited for the tight stick and responsiveness. I hate a sloppy stick. Overall I will use this one until Saitek comes out with a better model. Hopefully fixing the problems with the craftsmanship of the x52, and placing the rudder control back on the throttle. SST programming was very easy to do. Made programs for 10 games in little over an hour.

Works okay, but not very ergonomic.......2005-02-20

I bought this joystick for use in the BF1942 mod: Desert Combat. I had to hunt down a special file to get this joystick to work with this game though, which was actually a limitation of BF1942.

The controller itself is pretty bulky, but I guess that's to be expected from a joystick/throttle combo. I'm used to gamepads, so this took a little getting used to.

The reason I give this 3 stars and not 4 is because of the rudder control. It's inconviently located on the thottle control in such a way as you have to bend your wrist down almost 90 deg to reach it. Using the rudder control for more than 10 minutes and you'll start to experience pain in your wrist.

Fortunately, the controller comes with a great Profile Editor utility which lets you bind the controls to pretty much any keystroke imaginable. So, you can use this in any game, but it takes time to either hunt down an existing profile on the web, or building your own.

To be fair, this joystick is probably better for flight sims than combat.

TIP: There are notches on the bottom of these two devices, find a surface you can hammer nails into and align them with these notches. This way, the joystick doesn't move around on your desk and you have much better control.

Best of the Best - from a GA pilot.......2005-02-15

This is the best fighter throttle and joystick combo out there. The product is easy to install (follow the directions, the throttle plugs into the joystick and the joystick plugs in to the computer.) and the configurability is excellent.

I am a GA pilot and use this for both combat sims (IL2, LOMAC, Aces High), X-Plane and FS2004. The construction is rock solid (it is not made of cheap plastic like most joysticks on the market) and the ability to change the tension on the joystick and throttle are an added bonus.

Bottom Line: If you're an avid flight sim fan looking for a joystick, skip the rest, buy the best.

No peripheral is ever perfect..........2005-01-29

This HOTAS has more promise than any other joystick or gaming peripheral I've used so far. The programmibility of the stick is awesome by itself. I love the look, the price point, and the button placement design of the hardware. It doesn't work for everyone, so test drive it first before you buy. I've been using this setup for about 5 months now...

When I took this thing out of the box, installed the software (use the saitek site, not the CD!!!) and loaded Mechwarrior 4, I was somewhat dissappointed. The weight of the joystick and throttle cause them to slip and silde with stronger game movements. The rubber pads on the bottom don't really work all that well. With this setup out of the box, in spite of everything I love about it, I give it an unremarkable 1.5 stars.

However, EVERYTHING changed when I decided to mount the two pieces to brackets I fashioned for desk or chair use. By using the mounting holes below the stick and throttle, the x45 became a serious gaming peripheral and buttons that were hard to use before (rudder rocker switch) became easy and almost effortless! The biggest shortcoming of the x45 for me is stability. The mounting bracket solved this.

This is not a joystick for everyone. My hands are a bit smaller, so I had a reach a little more but not uncomfortably for certain buttons. Out of the box, this piece is something of a letddown because of its instability for practical, more aggressive gaming. Slap the HOTAS on a wood and steel bracket, you're ready to rock.

Just don't forget to make a hole for the tension screw on the throttle! I had to take my bracket apart last week to make this change and it's a pain.

USB Compatible?.......2005-01-16

I received my Saitek X45 Joystick & throttle but only the joystick has a USB connection. The throttle has a different connector that will not fit any slot on my computer. I am not sure what type of connector it is because there is absolutely NO statement of any type about this either on the box or in the manual included. In fact I don't think there is any mention of installing the hardware at all (except for saying to install it prior to loading the software).

I never used the IL-2 Sturmovic WWII combat simulator software working because it slowed my whole system down. just trying to click on what I wanted to do (mission, etc.) was almost impossible. I had to slightly move my mouse and guess where it would stop (about 3 seconds later) and then click. Finally I just gave up.

I am just returning the whole thing.
