Great Multifunction Machine..........2005-12-17

I have had this machine for about a week and have been very happy with it. The copier is very fast, software works well with the computer (MacOS X 10.4.3) and was very easy to setup. The scanner didn't work well at first, but I realized I was scanning at too low of a resolution. Once the settings were adjusted it does a great job. So far I have been very impressed with this machine and would certainly recommend it. Especially for the price (I paid $299 and then had a $100 mail in rebate - can't beat that... it was refurbished and did not come with a USB cable, but for that price it's ok).

I bought this multifunction for my office. I really only need it as a copy machine and a printer. I don't need to fax and have not faxed with it. That said, I love it so far. The toner cartridges are affordable and the machine looks very professional. And, with the $100 rebate from Amazon, the price is right!

Excellent Choice for the Home Office.......2005-11-13

I looked at a lot of specs and reviews before deciding on a Brother 8820D. For my light usage and needs, it was a really easy choice to buy a remanufactured unit.

The unit has been very well reconditioned -- you wouldn't know otherwise that it is a refurb unit. Note: There is *NOT* a USB cable or parallel cable in the box. Materials included in the unit suggest using USB, by the way. (If you're buying a USB cable for this printer, you will need to get one with a "B" connector.)

The setup instructions were very straightforward and easy to accomplish. I hooked it up to my Mac and had everything going in a matter of minutes. I have successfully printed, copied, and scanned. I'm not planning on using this as a fax, so I cannot comment on its operation.

The best duplex laser-scanner-fax under $600, by far.......2005-10-22

... and I've seen lots. After getting burned (very badly) by a Sharp AL-1641CS, the Brother 8820D was a wonderful experience.

The five-line dot matrix LCD screen is essential -- a device without it is going to be very, very hard to use.
The toner cartridge has a refill port on it (although Brother tells you not to use it)
The interesting "top heavy" design looks a bit strange, but comes in very handy when you realize that you can put the small footprint all the way at the edge of a table/desk.
The printer and ADF mechanisms appear to be quite heavy duty -- probably only one step below the HP 8100 (which IMHO, is the pinnacle of modern super-rugged office machinery)
Color fidelity on the scanner is very good; better than most multifunction devices.
The ADF is unbelievably fast when you scan at 100dpi grayscale -- I'm guessing here, but it must be in excess of 60 pages per minute. Paper literally flies through it. Color scans are much slower, but still quite reasonable.

Unlike one of the other reviewers, I've found that the device scans to within 3mm of all margins -- I just did a test run and it was within 1mm of most of the margins. I'm sort of amazed that it can get this close. I think part of this is that it doesn't use the same part of the flatbed glass for ADF scanning that it uses for flatbed scanning -- there's a special separate strip of glass that curves downward to help the paper feed more evenly.
Very sharp, high quality output.
This printer has a real CPU in it with a generous amount of memory. Nothing is more frustrating than shelling out for a device only to realize that its ability to act as a printer was a complete afterthought, and that it chokes whenever you try to print anything too complex (cough, cough, Sharp, cough).

Negatives:

Paper curls a bit after printing, although every compact laser printer has this problem (due to high-temperature fusers). The paper generally flattens out after 5-10 minutes.
The mac scanner driver causes Image Capture to crash if you try to use the ADF. This is pretty annoying. Other than this, the drivers are excellent -- unobtrusive, simple, and reliable. The bundled software is a steaming pile, but that's true of nearly every hardware product.
It only holds half a ream of paper (250 sheets), so you're always left with these torn-open half-empty reams lying around. Unfortunately the second input tray (so you can put two half-reams in) is unjustifiably expensive.
No postscript support.

In short, if you need duplex printing, don't waste your time with any other multifunction -- this is the one you want. If you can live without duplex, the range of options you have is much larger, although I still don't know of a device that beats this one.

Brother MFC-8820D.......2004-04-25

I bought this unit last January. It was easy enough to hook up on my old Toshiba 4010CDT P2 266mgh laptop. Basically, the unit is fantastic EXCEPT for the scanner which still doesn't work properly. I must say that Brother support is not fantastic. I had several sorties with no postive outcome. I even offered to take both units to them even though I have bought an on site warranty. The support guy thinks my Windows 98 o/s is corrupted and suggested I format C and rebuild. This I do not believe as I have a friend who has exactly the same laptop as me and he had his rebuilt just a couple of weeks before. I borrowed his laptop and the scanning software perfomed very poorly. It was extraordinarily slow and cumbersome. My old HP5200 was fantastic as a scanner so I new what to expect. The real test will be when I buy a new laptop soon. If the scanner doesn't work I will take them to task.

Great device as long as you don't need support from Brother.......2004-03-16

This device is perfect for our needs for copying and printing. The laser quality is terrific and it prints much faster than similar ink jet models. The printer connected to the home network right away and both our Windows and OS X computers were able to print. The browser-based printer configuration over the network is really nice. The paper feed on the top never jams or rotates the page. This multifunction device is a great value.

I wish that I could comment on the scanner abilities except that neighter the Windows or OS X TWAIN drivers work. I've submitted a request for help twice over the past two weeks from Brother's online support page and have not received a response. It sounds like other people have very limited success with Brother's phone support. I have doubts that this company is willing to resolve issues that people have with their products. Be prepared to return the device if all functions don't completely work right out of the box.

Great MF machine; Lousy tech support from Brother.......2004-02-17

I bought this Brother MFC-8820D multi-function (MF) machine from Dell for $511.95. It seems to run great.

The real story is in the hideous tech support from Brother. The printer did not ship with a the OCR software CD for Win2K. There was only a Mac CD. I called Brother and they told me that I would have to buy the OCR software from ScanSoft, even though it was supposed to be included in with the MFC-8820D unit. I told them that that was crazy and I asked them to send me the CD. Then the printer support person told me to send the MFC-8820D back to Dell and ask them them to ship a new unit. It can't be very efficient to ship printers around the country when you really just need a CD! I guess Brother doesn't mind spending Dell's money.

I called Dell. At first they didn't give me a final answer about resolving the problem. Then to my surprise, Dell told me today that they shipped me a new printer. I can't believe that in order to get a replacement CD that Dell should have to ship a new system. Laurel to Dell, a Big Dart to Brother and extra work for me to send back the first printer.

Best value on the market.......2004-02-14

I spent several full days researching what laser printer to buy. Printers, multifunctions, copier/printers, etc., I looked at them all. This is the best deal on the market. The printing, scanning, faxing and copying are all easy and flawless. The software is even adequate (not great, but fully-functional and easy to use). Although the printer does use a lot of electricity when it kicks on, it isn't that noticable other than a very, very slight and momentary dimming of the lights.

I looked at the HP and the Canon and this is better. The toner is cheaper, there are more features and it is of better quality. It even feels more solid than the other brands of laser multifunctions. I've had the product for about a week and I'm thrilled with it. It is MUCH better than my Canon inkjet MultiPass F80 and little HP laser printer.

I didn't think I would write one of these reviews about a printer, but this one is that good.

I bought this unit as a backup after my hard drive crashed a few weeks ago. Now I make backups weekly with it and have found it to be quiet and reliable. When it's on it's almost totally silent. It seems pretty speedy as well. Setting it up is es easy as plugging in the USB cable and turning it on. Windows picks it right up as an extra hard drive. Admittedly I've only had it a month or so but I have no complaints at all. Would recommend it.

Never Had A Problem But..........2006-01-27

I purchased this in order to contain my large mp3 and mpg collection when I moved from a desktop to a laptop. I did not want to kill my laptop by storing all of my media files on it. I just stored all of my mp3's on here, and when I run iTunes, I have never had any problems with playback. However, there are some occasional issues when I play a video from this external hard drive on my computer. Every now and then, it skips, but overall, I am extremely pleased with the fact that I can store all of my media files on here and play them, through the USB with minimal interference on my laptop. Just as a side note, one of the reasons I purchased this external hard drive was because it had an independent power source. I was wary of buying a hard drive that claimed it could get sufficient power from the USB. I have never used an external hard drive like that, and was not interested in trying it.
The reason that it gets 4 stars as opposed to five is because it is a little too loud. First of all, when turned on, it will emit a high pitched whine that can get extremely annoying if the music is not turned on loud enough (I usually turn the music up if I can hear the whine). Secondly, I keep it on the floor (the USB cord is a little short, but entirely workable), it causes a vibration that gets annoying rather quickly if you like to have your feet on the floor.
So one the whole, I would recommend this product. The transfer speed is fast. I have witnessed this considering when I update my iPod, the songs stored on this hard drive are sent through the USB into the computer, and through the USB which updates the iPod; and I have not noticed any differential in speed from this set-up as opposed to all the songs stored on the hard drive. The fault of this drive (the high-pitched whine) is only an issue for me when I leave the hard drive on and am not listening to music. My conclusion, this is good product, with only minor faults.

It stopped working about halfway through the first data transfer and has only worked intermittently since. Unfortunately, I've put up with it for more than 30 days in order to complete the project for which I purchased it. So, now I can't even return it. When and if I get the rest of my data off of it, it's going into the trash.

my drive.......2006-01-14

the good thing about this drive is that it last alot longer than most drives. Even the best drives are subject to fail or crash and most drives (not this one) fails within 6 months or a year . i purchased a simpletech drive and it really did work very well. The support service is effecient and speedy also. It easily connects and its reliable as a back up drive not as a drive to move all your files to, which no drive should be used for(i learned that the hard way).

I have very good computer skills but regardless, mistakes always happen with computers not to mention i didn't read the booklet that came with it.
I have had the drive for about a year or so i think, maybe even longer and the drive slowly got slower and slower and then a error message pops up sayin the drive is not accesible. The reason was actually my fault becuase i wasn't properly disconnecting the drive but i reformatted it and it still had the same problem. Before this happened the drive was working perfectly. I was considering purchasing a drive from another manufacturer but there are the same amount of bad reviews as good reviews for each one I looked at. Choosing a drive really comes down to you because one product can't please everyone but this product worked well for me... also check out computerhq.com for a very good steal on a 250GB by the same brand only thing is it doesn't come with a warranty

Better Than Average ! .......2006-06-09

IMO phone is very Good. I know the rating is 3 it should be 4 close to 5. I had had some problem with talking on dropping in out and out. I really think It is Due to my Vonage service. It rarely happens though.

Talking ID is awesome. If you don't want to talk someone you don't even have to get to check the caller id.

Speaker phone on phone and base are Good. Ringtones are very good also, good to have variety like cell phones.

Great phone, still going strong!.......2006-02-23

I've had this phone for nearly a year now, and it's worked great for me. We switched to 5.8 GHz after getting wireless internet (2.4 interferes with the signal), and I have no complaints. It has worked like a charm from the beginning, and I have experienced none of the things other reviewers are upset about. My only wish is that the caller id would show me the name I assign a number instead of the standard name format. I guess I'm just spoiled by cell phone formatting! Overall, I would definitly recommend this phone to anyone looking, and at this price, why wouldn't you! I am actually getting some of the handsets you can add to the system, and they are costing me more than the phone does now!

Over a year of use and still going..........2005-10-16

I bought this phone a year ago. I was worry about battery life because of other reviews on the Panasonic brand. It was never a problem with this phone system. I leave it off the base for a few days at a time and there's still battery life left. I only bought the base unit but if I really needed additional phones, I would purchase more handsets of this same model. I have no problems with the range of service for this phone. I live in a two-story house. The base is located downstairs and I constantly take the phone upstairs where my conversations are as clear as they are near the base. These phones are lightweight, durable, easy to use (with regards to features such as voicemail, phone preferences, etc.). I would purchase from Panasonic again mainly due to the affordable prices coupled with a reliable product. My favorite features are the different mailboxes people can leave messages in (if you have lots of people in your household), the phone book (this is very convenient!), and the different ring tones (fun to change once in awhile although some may find the melody choices annoying). If you're considering another phone system, make sure you compare prices and features. I have used the sleeker and more stylish Uniden (the 5.8 GHz ones) and I still prefer the Panasonic because the the buttons are easier to use and the phone just fits my hand better (its curvy design feels nice). Think function, not just form. Am I carrying on too much over a telephone?

A very good telephone. Some reviews I read said that the telephone did not work well near the base. On the conterary, I'm not having any such problems. Excellent range and clarity. Also like some reviews I read, no one has yet complained in the last month I have been using this phone, that they connot hear me properly. Definitely an excellent buy for the $ I paid.
