A good product, but a little fidgety.......2005-06-30

I recently purchased one last month and it has been a good worker. The picture is crisp and the features work as advertised. Being a digital product, it is a bit picky about the AC power: line glitches can produce interesting results on screen. Unplugging the set for 5 seconds or so will sort things out nicely. Certain memory functions will lose their settings, but it is minor: favorite channels (4 buttons.)
The scan through for available channels is slow, but thorough. The picture for air channels (use HDTV antenna) is great and when they put out Hi-Def, oooh! Nice. Sound is quite good with decent bass! Be still, my beating heart.
A nicely laid-out menu system makes tweaking things easy with the most-used buttons on the remote set at easily reached levels. Unfortunately, the remote will not play nice with DirecTV boxes meaning multiple remotes. Sigh!
For me, it was an easily set-up unit with my main beef being the inputs set on the other side of the set from my video sources meaning stretching of the cables to reach. Picky, picky.
All in all, an impressive unit giving excellent pictures and is easily transportable. Just feed it a good signal of any sort and enjoy.

First, I must say this is a very nice set, however I must note that If you intend to use this set with a Cablecard the TV Guide feature will no longer work. I called Sharp and they admitted this was a problem. The TV-Guide feature is a good idea but Sharp has some work to do to get it to work.

I absolutely love this TV. I've had it for exactly 2 years. I bought it for my dorm room. It's the perfect size, not too big not too small. Plus, the flat screen helps with the no glare thing. Now moving into an apartment and hope to upgrade to a bigger screen, but this is good. Sound & picture quality is quite good, especially for the price!

Pros - Flat screen is great. Lots of advanced features in screen options, sound settings. Good price for a small TV. I trust Samsung based on other purchases. Used it to replace an old 20", but the sharper picture made this a great choice.
Cons - Actual sound performance is not as good as a TV with side-mounted speakers should produce. Dialogue can be hard to discern. I use the screen with a separate surround sound system when watching DVDs, so it doesn't end up being much of a problem.
Verdict - For this size screen, I would buy this unit again.

I love this TV! This is my 3rd Samsung, mainly for one key feature, what they call Surf, which returns to a particular channel after a specified period- great for channel-surfing during a commercial. I really wish my other TVs had this feature.

Logos for DTS and Dolby Digital indicate the format. The main display shows disc title, chapter, and elapsed time. It also shows whether the repeat function is on. There's also an icon showing whether the parental lock function is active. Finally, a grid of squares shows the tracks or chapters for a given disc.

The rear panel offers coaxial and optical digital-audio outputs; unfortunately, they're very close together, which poses a problem for some cables with extra-wide plugs. In addition to the digital-audio outputs, the DVDC600 has two pairs of analog stereo outputs. Samsung thoughtfully provides two composite-video outputs, plus an S-Video out and a set of component-video jacks.

The full-function joystick-style remote control is smartly laid out, with the main functions arranged like spokes around a wheel in the center. The enter button rests in the middle as part of the joystick, which is less finicky than most joystick remotes. Three large buttons above the joystick offer access to the player's functions and the DVD disc menu. Below the joystick, you'll find quick-access buttons for audio, subtitle, and camera angle. Large play, pause, and stop buttons are centrally located and easy to find, as are the chapter skip, fast-forward, and rewind buttons. The universal remote control can also be programmed to operate most TVs, and has buttons for channel skip, volume, and channel number keys, which can also be used to program discs.

An oversize platter slides open with the touch of the remote or front-panel button, enabling you to load your favorite discs. An exchange button allows you to load discs while a DVD or CD is playing without interrupting the movie or music.

Although you can play random discs through the DVDC600, like other multidisc DVD players, it does not allow you to play random tracks from disc to disc.

First off let me say that I have not had a problem with this player and that it does play CD-R's. I guess it may matter what brand of CD-R you have. I prefer the TDK brand myself ( certified plus )

As you read the overview here on Amazon notice that it does have a very complete feature set and as currently ($$$) represents a heck of a deal. Remote is well laid out and operats cleanly. It is nice to be able to mix and match DVD's and CD's as I doubt I will have a marathon with 5 DVD's - hey maybe if I am really board...:-)

The unit has all the various inputs and outputs you could use and produces a very nice picture, especially through the component outputs.

There is not much difference between this and the 601 so if you are looking for a lot of features for minimal $$ this is a great player. I have other Samsung gear and have not had a problem as well with any of it but I usually buy their mid range gear.

I view this as a good utility player where you can put in one or two movies and your favorite CD's and extend the party without having to load and re-load the player.

I received this dvd player for Christmas. One month later the picture started freezing up. As time passed the problem became more frequent and the movie stopped playing all together. I called 1-800-SAMSUNG and was givent the name of a service center. The service center was fast a responsive informing me that Samsung was going to replace the machine. Samsung then took 4 months to get me a new dvd player. Two months later the new machine did the same thing. I called Samsung and put off by and laughed at by their customer service staff. To me, the service provided by the manufacturer is just as important as the quality of the product. BEWARE OF THIS PRODUCT AND SERVICE!

The DVDC600 is a wonderful DVD Player-- if it works. If you're like me, that feat hasn't happened often. I bought the player in January. Shortly after getting it, I noticed the picture would sometimes freeze briefly. Other times, it would become unwatchable. Sometimes the machine would stop reading the disk altogether. I brought it to an authorized repair shop on January 26th. After four months of ordering parts and wasting time (and several phone calls to 1-800-SAMSUNG) they decided to send me a "refurbished" model (ie: someone else's broken machine). They called me to say I could finally pick up my refurbished machine-- ON MEMORIAL DAY. That's right, four months later. I went and got that one... and guess what? It had the exact same problem as my first one. I called the folks at 1-800-SAMSUNG yet again, and "Jeff" asked me if that was "ALL" that was wrong with my machine. Then he tried to tell me that the laser pickup couldn't move fast enough on changers so sometimes the picture would freeze. Everyone else I asked said "Jeff" was full of [it]. So in the end, we have a 2 DVD players that don't work, and Customer Service Reps. who lie to customers to make them go away. What a way to run a company.

I just want my money back so I can go buy a Sony or Panasonic. Good Luck!

Samsung Customer Service Is AWFUL.......2001-04-20

Do not buy this or any other Samsung DVD player. My experience with both the product and customer service left much to be desired. Upon receipt, the remote did not work. Samsung customer service asked me to take the remote to a repair shop to verify that it was the remote and not the sensor on the unit. After verifying that it was the remote itself, I called customer service to get a replacement remote. Samsung would not ship one out until I first shipped the defective one to them. This meant that I had to find a suitable box, go the the PO and wait for the roundtrip mail. They wouldn't even refund my cost for postage. It was defective, why should I have to pay ANYTHING! Even after I told them that Sony had shipped out a new remote when my VCR remote died six months after I bought it, no questions asked, no need to return the defective unit. I asked to speak to the supervisor, she was busy and never called back. Samsung has a lot to learn about customer service. Stick with Sony or any other brand! I decided to return the unit rather than give them my hard earned $$.

This TV is NOT HD ready!.......2006-08-21

I would completely agree with the other review that states the DVI port is the only HD port on this TV and it doesn't support HDCP (New Security for HD content). I bought this TV when it first came out thinking it would be useable when more HD content was available.... WRONG! I just updated my receiver and DVD player and connected them with an HDMI to DVI-D cable thinking I was set for HD. The entire time I was setting up my new receiver and DVD player I was patting myself on the back for having the foresite to buy an HD ready TV. After getting everything setup I get NO picture on this TV and an HDCP error on the receiver because the TV doesn't have the $%#$*&$ HDCP security. This was just another $5K wasted on technology that isn't supported by the industry or Philips. I just can't believe they are still able to market this TV as HD-Ready when it is quite obvious that HDCP security is going to be required for any device receiving HD content. Also, they are making sure that it's illegal to provide any kind of adapter in the U.S. that allows the security to be bypassed and older devices (3 years or less included) to be used with the new equipment. Do your homework before you waste this kind of money on a TV.

I now have the most expensive computer monitor known to man, which will work until Microsoft finishes their version of HDCP for computers (Longbow) and makes it completly obsolete.

I am just amazed at the complete lack of knowledge displayed by the so called "expert" reviewers on the Internet and in the stores who seem completely uneducated about this very real easily reproducable issue.

Sound goes out, customer service and tech support from Philips Magnavox is horrible, they told me my TV didn't have speakers, then they said it was the Sound Processing board, then the went back to the TV didn't have speakers, Now they admit the TV does have speakers but the board will take a couple months to order, ship and install. I WILL NEVER BUY FROM THIS COMPANY AGAIN

The box says dual component HD inputs. The set has only one set of component inputs. The DVI-D port does not support HDCP so it will not work with any new DVD player and set top boxes with DVI output since most have HDCP protection on them.

I bought this from a local store (Fry's), returned it. Philips' tech support is clueless about their own technology. The wonders of outsourcing!

I would not buy this TV since it is not "future proof". No DVI-HDCP and no HDMI. DVI input works for PC only. WTF would someone buy an expensice plasma for a computer.

This TV is great overall. I am extremely happy with the picture quality when using it under HD. Its absolutely unbeliveable!! The drawback is Time Warner only has about 13 HD channels, everything else is in SD. Under a SD signal the TV is an average performer (which is why I gave it 4 stars & not 5). The picture does get grainy and my $300 TV looks much better than this set! But it is still "bearable".

I did go down to a local electronics store and do a comparision of this set against the leading brands (under HD signal), and i must say it was just as good or even better than some of those 5K+ TV's out there.

Its works great when hooked up to my pc, I did have to go out and get a decent video card with a DVI out. The picture quality is simply great.

Bottom Line: Buy it! But just be prepared to be patient until more 'n more programs get broadcast in HD.
