If you're seeking a good value in a budget DVD player, the Samsung DVD511 deserves serious consideration. Despite its Spartan appearance and modest price, this model does the DVD medium proud, and also proves a surprisingly sweet player with audio-disc recordings.

In our tests, it tracked even the trickiest action video disc (The Matrix) with aplomb and delighted the ears with accurate playback of acoustic jazz, classical, and folk CDs.

All the essentials of a versatile player are on board. You'll enjoy clean-looking, multispeed fast scan and slow-motion picture modes in both forward and reverse directions. Plus it has sharp still frames, which are user selectable by field or frame, or automatically chosen by the machine for whichever looks best with the image grabbed. There's even an auto-resume feature that picks up right where you stopped if you turn off the player and then come back to a movie later.

We were also happy to discover some useful features here that are usually lacking even on much more expensive machines. For example, during double speed (2x) fast scan, this Samsung samples and plays snatches of dialogue in normal speed and pitch. The sound is out of sync with the picture, and some of the conversation is lost. But the gist of the dramatic matter usually comes through and the voices don't sound like Mickey and Minnie. (In case you're not into hearing the audio while the video's in slow-mo or fast-forward mode, the sound-play mode is defeatable.)

Picture zoom on the Samsung DVD511 is also better than most DVD players. Mr. Home Director (that's you) can go in for your own private close-up either on the fly (with the program running) or more easily, after hitting the still button--with a frozen image already locked on screen. Move the cursor over the segment of the picture of special interest, tap the zoom button, and up it grows to fill the screen (but beware of the digital blur.)

The menu system is unusually versatile, as well. This DVD player displays operating modes, not only in the expected, user-switchable English, Spanish, and French languages, but also in Italian, German, and Dutch.

A screensaver goes on automatically (fading the opening screen in, then out) whenever the player is stopped for more than one minute. That's an especially important feature to have if this DVD player is going to be connected to a big-screen rear-projection set that's more susceptible to image burn-in. The player shuts itself down if abandoned for more than 30 minutes.

Samsung stands behind the DVD511 with a full one-year warranty on parts and labor for the original owner. Most brands usually deliver one-year free replacement on parts, but only 90 days coverage on labor.

You might notice a couple of small shortcomings on the rear jack-pack, though it's nothing too serious. There's just one set of analog audio-video outputs, and only one digital sound output (fiber optic) to funnel the PCM audio stream coming off Dolby Digital, DTS, and CD discs. However, although the DVD511 doesn't offer component video outputs, the single S-video output jack delivers quite the pristine picture.

Since most users will start off plugging this player into a conventional stereo rig, stereo TV, or Dolby Pro Logic Surround Sound receiver, we went the analog sound route in our tests. The DVD511 did an extremely good job of down-converting DVD's native 5.1-channel Dolby Digital soundtracks to 4-channel matrix Pro Logic. Channel separation was still very clear and dramatically tingly when fed some well-engineered content.

And some surround-style kicks are obtainable even when you're listening in a two-channel (stereo) setup. Just tap the 3-D button on the remote, which activates the Spatializer circuitry. This "psycho-acoustic" surround effect tricks the brain (with time delay cues) into thinking that sound is coming from the sides of the room as well as the front, where the speakers are situated. Just remember to sit dead center between the speakers for the ultimate, killer effect. However, you may also notice a tradeoff in body (signal) warmth when the 3-D is engaged.

All in all, as bargain machines go, the Samsung DVD511 is a honey.

After reading all of the horror stories, I guess mine came from a good batch. Not only does it play prerecorded DVD's without skipping, it also plays those I record on my PC without a hitch.
In fact, yesterday I recorded a movie for my Grandson and I couldn't even play it back on my PC so I thought it was a bad copy. Took it out of my PC and gave it a shot on his Samsung and it played just like a prerecorded movie that you would buy in the store.
So I guess it is hit and miss and mine is a hit.

I figured since longevity is a major issue in all electronics purchases as well as performance, I can now say having owned this dvd player for over three years now with practically every day usage, I am proud to say it is still going strong. Once every several months it did skip or freeze when fast forwarding (for some reason 4x as fast wasn't as amenable as 2 or 8 or 16), but all I had to do was pop out the dvd, give it a quick wipe and pop it back in again. As far as features go, I still find it amazing that the frame advance and zoom features aren't standard on other more expensive models. In all, I feel I've gotten my money's worth 20 times over for this price.

Only solution for skipping and freezing is to be change "board"! I don't know what it is and is it something like the mainboards in computers but the technical service of Samsung told me that they changed it and now it is "perfect"!

JUST STAY AWAY OF IT! DVD511 IS GREAT ON THE FIRST HALF OF MOVIES BUT AFTER A 1 OR 1,5 HOURS LATER IT ALWAYS SKIPS AND FREEZES! I SENT IT 4-5 TIMES BACK AND SPEND [$$$] TO FIX BUT THEY COULDN'T!!! THIS WAS MY FIRST SAMSUNG PRODUCT AND NOW I HATE SAMSUNG! BELIEVE ME; FOREVER "SONY"!

I got this DVD as a Christmas present in 2000. It started out fine with playing DVDs. Eventually after using it for a while I began to notice some skips, mainly when it tried switching between tracks on the DVDs. It didn't bother me a whole lot considering it was a gift and all, but rather annoying no doubt. Well...I've still got this DVD player (not more much longer I must say!). Just yesterday I was watching Atlantis on it with my sister, I had to stop it because of visitors and many hours later I came back to finish the movie. Well to my surprise now it won't read any of my DVDs, but it will still read audio CDs for some reason. I've unplugged the thing and even tried the old playstation trick of turning it upside down. I'm guessing it just decided to die on me for no reason because I'm not sure what happened to this thing, it was working perfectly fine earlier. But when it does try to read the discs now (more like failing at reading them) it is much louder than usual. Unfortunately, the one year limited warrenty is up on this thing, so is it's life!

I received this DVD player as a Christmas gift in Decemeber of 2000. It has worked almost flawlessly since, and I only had one DVD not work with it (Moulin Rouge), but I returned it and got another copy that did work, so I guess it really wasn't the player.

I am a huge fan of Samsung's remote control which has a little joystick--its a lot of fun to play with. Unlike Sony players, Samsung's fast-forward and reverse give you much more control (up to 32x) and actually tell you the speed (not just FF). The jog dial on the unit is also a nice touch, but I wish it could go frame-by-frame in reverse. The preouts (DTS and DD) are very clean sounding and will certainly suit the audiophile. The 3d sound is also very good. I already had a 5.1 speaker set up, but the 3d sounds adds another dimension of ambience and warmth. After reading a review on this very page, I learned that the Samsung was MP3 audio compatible despite the information on this site and the Samsung manual. After trying it for myself, I was impressed, although it can only play 100 tracks, which is still very good (especially for a player thats 1.5 years old).

The picture is just as good as the sound. I am using component video on my 32" flat-screen and the quality is superb--much better than the Apex models.

Samsung DVD Model 711 - AVOID !! AVOID!! AVOID!!.......2002-04-13

My wife and I received this as a wedding gift and really apreciated the gesture at the time. We have now owned this miserable excuse for a DVD player for over a year and have successfully watched maybe 3 DVD's out of dozens without it skipping and refusing to play the disk. I've heard stories about the US versions of this player skipping and the European one doesn't but don't take a chance. It skips on new and used DVD's. I can't think of many things more frustrating than finally finding that movie you have been wanting to see for weeks in the video store and renting it only to have it stop playing 3/4 of the way through. ... Do yourself a favor - don't buy one of these.

This was a Christmas gift for my parents. My only complaint was that the instructions on how to set it up weren't as clear as we (the electronically handicapped) would have preferred. However after consulting my brother-in-law we got it to work. The picture and sound were great and now my parents go DVD shopping at least once a week.

And I have yet to buy MYSELF a DVD player....

Great TV, but NOT HD!!!!.......2007-04-20

I give it a 4 star because it was a bit misrepresented to me. It is not a true HD tv, it is HD-Ready. Which means that it is capable of decoding the HD signal and displaying it. However, it does NOT display it at HD resolution. Also, the thing weighs in at what seems to be about 800 lbs, though actually much less. It is a bear to move mainly due to the fact that there are no real good ways to get a grip on it and the heavy weight. If you are a renter who doesn't stay in one place for more than a year at a time I would suggest a lighter model.

I recently purchased this set at Sams Club for $990.00. At this price, this is the best bargain in the mini wide screen category.

I will send you to other reviews for the 30" and 34" for all the details, but I couldn't praise this one more.

My only complaint(2)is in the remote. (1) Cheap plastic, and the back light only lights a small portion of the remote. (2) Need to have a seperate button for each input.Surfing through multiple devices is rather time consuming.

fantastic hdtv, at a great price.......2004-11-13

I'm exceedingly happy with this product after having owned it for around 3 months now. I tried and returned two other 34inch widescreen models prior to settling on this phillips 34pw8402. The standard def picture quality is really good on this set, noticeably better than most HDTV sets. Often times HDTV sets do a poor job with regular def signals, after having experienced this on my first two tries, I was thrilled when I saw what this set could do with a regular signal. Regular TV just looks great, the colors especially...I believe this set's strength with regular signals comes from its "active control2" capabilities, and some enhanced digital video processing features incorporated into this set. Now for HDTV signals and progressive scan DVD, this set gives a positively spectacular image!! Don't be fooled by the age and size of CRT technology. Trust me, it does exceedingly well with HDTV signals, and rivals, (and in my opinion) mostly surpasses the image you get from $3000-5000 Plasma and LCDs. My 34pw8402 HDTV signal is visibly better than my brother's $5000 Panasonic plasma. Anyways, back to the set, the HDTV image is just wonderful, and often times eerily realistic. Nature shows are mind boggling, and sports, particularly Football, is just jaw dropping gorgeous. Finally, for DVD's you will be more than impressed as well, I have this set hooked up to a computer and I "upscale" DVD's to 1920x1080i resolution, and the end effect is incredible. It really has a 3d effect, and you can see tremendous depth and detail to any well filmed movie. With this TV, you will re-experience your favorite movies all over again, and you will find yourself watching more DVD's than you ever thought you would. I really don't have any complaints with this set, from the inputs, to sound, to form factor, ect..Everything is perfect, or very nearly so. One more thing, this set has the new HDMI digital standard hookup, and I wasn't too concerned with this going in, but as it turns out, when I did buy an hdmi cable...and switched my DirecTV HDTV hookup from RGB component to hdmi...there was some real significant image quality improvement. I wasn't expecting much, but I'd say it gave a 25% improvement to an HDTV image that I thought could not get any better. So, if you can, get an HDTV that has the new hdmi. This would be prudent anyways, since this is the new standard, and all new HDTV's, plasmas ect, are incorporating it. In summary, this Phillips is a 5 STAR SET, both for HDTV, and regular content. It's also a fantastic buy in comparison to the competition, particularly the Sony and Toshiba 34" models, which are considerably more. I like both of those sets, but if price was no issue, I would have gotten this Phillips again, I'm that pleased with it.
