Samsung's DVD-HD931 aims to redefine DVD picture quality, using high technology to upconvert DVD-Video images to resolutions better suited for today's high-definition displays (720p/1080i). Even if you're planning to upgrade your television at a later date, this player will work with your current set and all commercial DVD-Video media, as well as your homemade MP3/WMA music CDs, Picture CDs, and CDs filled with JPEG image files.

The DVD-HD931 goes beyond the typical progressive-scan DVD player by adding a built-in video scaler that permits output to a HDTV.

Standard DVD players output 480i (interlaced) video. Progressive-scan players roughly double that resolution by outputting 480p (progressive scan) video. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DVD-HD931's 480p output can be sent via a dedicated DVI (digital visual interface) output or the more traditional component-video outputs.

The DVD-HD931 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Faroudja's de-interlacing technology (DCDi) is built into the device, performing directional interpolation--detecting the angle of a pixel's outer tilt--on each pixel. Video signals are de-interlaced according to that angle, thereby correcting image vibration, stair-stepping, cut-off, and other common video-processing artifacts.

Two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. If you don't have a surround receiver or six-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: the unit's 3-D Sound function simulates surround sound through two speakers (even the stereo speakers on a TV).

Other features include EZ View letter box eliminator (which adapts widescreen images for 4:3 aspect-ratio TV sets), motion zoom (which magnifies selected screen areas by 2x or 4x), instant replay/skip (which initiates a 10-second jump backward or forward), and bookmarking (which lets you mark sections of a disc for rapid access).

Three keys to high-quality pictures

DCDi technology: By adopting the Genesis FLI2310 chip, where Faroudja technology was materialized, it perfectly corrects vibration, stairs, cut-off, and other standard operational errors that may occur in a picture.

DNIe chip: By adopting the DNIe (Digital Natural Image Engine) chip, the DVD-HD931 displays a clean picture. This is done by reproducing a digital source that passes through an FLI2310 chip as it is without any loss of picture quality.

DVI video output: No reduction of picture quality or distortion can occur when adopting DVI that supports Digital Image Perfection.

Two keys to superior sound

HDCD and DVD-audio playback capability: Unlike a normal DVD player playing only an ordinary CD, Samsung's DVD-HD931 enables you to hear HDCD and DVD-audio formats, which are of significantly improved quality.

Dolby/DTS digital output: It streams out Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel streams and enables you to hear the same degree of the original sound that would be heard at a movie theater.

Video format conversion
A normal DVD player transmits a video signal to 480i output when playing a DVD title (480i/480p). Even with a progressive-scanning DVD player, it simply outputs a video signal of 480i to 480p. However, Samsung's DVD-HD931 enables you to enjoy an HDTV-compliant picture with an ordinary DVD title, thanks to its scale-up to 720p/1080i.

Motion adaptive de-interlacing

Motion adaptive technologies produce the finest progressive output available. They detect the amount of motion and use an appropriate mix of spatial and temporal processing with the highest resolution for still areas that have no motion artifacts in moving areas.

DCDi
The Samsung DVD-HD931 performs directional interpolation on each pixel with DCDi technology, which detects the angle of an outer tilt by pixel, and then de-interlaces a video signal according to the angle. This state-of-the-art video processing technology is incorporated for even higher picture quality assurance. DCDi eliminates the jagged edges that appear when standard interlaced video is viewed on progressive-scan displays, which means that progressive-scan DVD players that feature DCDi technology produce images that look more smooth and natural.

"Up-converting" is useless in a DVD player.......2006-03-21

OK, maybe I'm on a little bit of a "jihad" here against these up-converting DVD players, but bear with me because I do have a valid point.

Don't buy any DVD player because it can "up-convert to HD". Evaluate all DVD players on whether they do everything else well, or have the connections you need (DVI, HDMI, etc.) or the price is in your budget. This may be a fine DVD player, but don't buy it just because it can up-convert, and don't use the up-convert capabilities of this player even if you do buy it.

If your TV can accept 720p or higher input via DVI or HDMI, then it is already scaling the image to fit the native resolution of the display device. And if it isn't doing a better job of it than any DVD player, then you bought the wrong TV.

They spend a lot of time going into the technology of image scaling and line interpolating in this product description, and it's all very accurate, but what I don't get is why anyone would think a $200 DVD player would do a better job of this than their multi-thousand dollar TV which has the scaling technology already built into it designed for the specific display device inside the box.

My final point: If this up-coverting technology is such a good idea, why is Samsung the only one doing it? Why not Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony, JVC, and Denon? (Because they know it's usless technology).

Bad Product.......2005-01-10

Steer clear of this product unless you like your DVD movies to freeze up and skip at the most inopportune moments. Last night I had to move to the bedroom and use my old $75 DVD player to finish watching a movie. Don't waste your money.

I have had this for over a year now. So far, I am satified with it.

Pro:
DVI-I output is far superior than the run of the mill regular 480p. Pick your choice, 720p or 1080i. Plays all my burned DVD-R's just fine. Sound is good. The unit's build quality is good. Remote can control TV.

Con:
Very very picky. Does not like VCD's. MP3 and JPEG CD's need to be burned with specific format (ISO 9660, etc..) to work. JPEG display is poor and butt slow. Huge jug-dial that glows blue LED can be annoying (personal preference).

Overall, if you primarily use it for DVD or MP3 via DVI connection, it is fine. Anything else, better look elsewhere.

Not bad, needs work........2004-08-14

I've had this one connected to my Panasonic ED Plasma for several months now. Connections: DVI to Plasma, Optical to Denon 2802. Excellent picture quality. Scaling is a little lopsided and needs some work. I HAVE NOT experienced any undesired picture or sound effects. Not a bad DVD player.

DVD-R does not work well with this player.......2004-07-04

Even though Samsung claims it can play all burnable DVD media, it does not work very well. I have tried all brands of media and it takes several minutes to half an hour to load a disc. I have also used media burned from different hardware with the same result. The picture on my 60 inch lcd projection using the DVI input looks great, but the remote is terrible and it is unable to play media that works in cheap freebie players. Wait for a DVI enabled player from a good company.

The RN-305 sits squarely in the middle of Panasonic's RN line of microcassette recorders. It doesn't come with many advanced features, but what you do get is a solid recording device with voice-activation capability that runs for more than a dozen hours on a pair of AA batteries.

The voice-activated recording technology used in the RN-305 works better than we expected and usually only clipped off the first part of the first word that activated it. However, though it's easy to set the sound level required to activate the voice-activated recording feature, we achieved universally better results when we manually started and stopped the recorder. The RN-305 runs on batteries and has an external 3-volt power jack, but no AC adapter is included.

This recorder also comes with a feature that doubles your recording time by slowing down the tape speed. The recording quality does take a slight hit, but the results are still intelligible. We also liked the fast-play feature, which plays back recordings faster to make transcribing easier. The pitch of the recording rises to Chipmunks level when this option is enabled, but this is par for the course with this feature.

The RN-305 has a headphone jack, but if you need an external microphone jack, you'll want to opt instead for the feature-rich (and more expensive) Panasonic RN-405. Without a microphone jack, the RN-305 cannot record telephone interviews, and the device also lacks other handy features like a tape counter and a low-battery light. Still, the unit is a generally good workhorse that should appeal to students, employees who need to record meetings, and other users looking for a no-frills microcassette recorder that works as advertised. --T. I'm a writer for a college newspaper. Money isn't something that I can just toss around. However, I needed a micro-cassette recorder for interviews.

I saw this one, it was much cheaper than the digital recorders that I was looking at. I tried it as soon as I got home. If you buy this, be sure to pick up a 3pk of micro-cassettes and 2 AA batteries.

It has worked pretty well. I don't use the voice activation feature. Making sure to get everything that I need on tape is far to important, so I just record.

I really wish that this also had a spot for a plug in microphone. It would really come in handy when trying to get some comments when you are standing in a crowd. A wrist strap would also be nice, so you don't have to worry about dropping this thing.

If you can afford a digital recorder, get it. If you can't or aren't going to use it enough to make it worth spending that kind of money, this is a great alternative.

A Good Buy.......2001-06-20

This is just what I was looking for - an inexpensive, hand-held cassette machine I could use for personal "dictation". I like the voice-activated feature. It's definitely nothing fancy, but for the price I wasn't expecting anything fancy. By the way, I chose it based on other people's reviews here of this product and found them very helpful. (Also, Panasonic products have a good frequency-of-repair record, according to Consumer Reports.)

In voice-activated mode, records a noisy beep every 2 seconds, thus almost completely obscuring the recording. This is with new Panasonic batteries. Problem only appears in voice-activated mode.

I do like this phone when I am talking on it. Of course I am
getting a "expandable phone system" to replace this unit. I have
used this phone for several years.

Pros:
1. Good sound quality. Seems to be something Panasonic does well.
2. Good range. 2.4 GHz will interfere with wireless networks.
3. Durable outside construction.

Cons:
1. Buttons 2,5,6,8,9 require pushing very hard to work.
2. The LCD on the base unit always was unreadable but now is
failing.
3. Base unit is not very smart, must use the handset to set the
time!

Keypad problem.......2005-03-07

Had the phone for less than a year and the #1 button on the keypad now has problems accepting the finger press. I have to push down really hard and as a result will dial two 1's.

Virtually indestructible - Also waterproof and shockproof.......2005-01-29

This is a ruggedized phone, with bits of rubber bumpers and sealed electronics. Not sure why they don't mention this key feature, maybe people complained it is not waterproof enough. But you can use the headset in the shower, rinse it under water, drop it on the floor, etc. With "normal" use, it is virtually indestructible. With heavy use, expect to replace the battery about once a year.

I bought this phone a year ago and I end up changing the battery already once. The battery was discharging so fast and recently I stopped using the handset completely. Eventhough I charge it whole night, it is not getting charged. The warranty service is also very bad. Fortunately I bought this phone using my Visa Platinum and they covered the full price. Thanks to Visa.

If you subscribe to special telephone services such as caller ID and voice mail, the Panasonic KXTC1850 cordless phone can help you take full advantage of them. Its convenient LCD and extensive program functions also make it quick and easy to set up and use.

Its sleek design and sturdy construction add to its overall attractiveness. The backlit keypad and LCD have an intuitive layout, and we were able to access basic features without reading the owner's manual. For more complex functions, the detailed manual was very helpful, however. A quick guide is also included.

The KXTC1850 can store up to 10 numbers and an additional number on the direct dialing button. Programming the memory dialing feature is fairly straightforward. The only caveat is that the LCD and many of the program buttons are on opposite sides of the handset, so we had to flip the handset over several times to perform just one function. Other basic features include ringer selection, and Flash and Redial buttons. The ringer has a pleasant, unobtrusive sound and can be set to low or high.

The LCD displays the number of caller-ID calls you have received. To access a new call, press the Search button (located just below the LCD) to scroll through calls. The LCD displays the caller's number and name, if available. To return to the selected call, simply press the Talk button. The KXTC1850 stores up to 40 caller-ID calls, and shows the time and date of the received calls, and the number of times each caller tried to reach you.

To use the voice mail service, you need to enter an access number (provided by your telephone company). Voice mail functions are programmed using the LCD and Search buttons. An indicator flashes when you receive a new call. To listen to your calls, press the Voice Mail button and follow the prerecorded instructions. It couldn't be easier.

Overall, the KXTC1850 provides excellent sound clarity over a long range. In our tests, the signal remained strong approximately 200 feet from the base. It continued to carry the signal up to 1,000 feet with only minimal voice breakup. We also detected only occasional background static throughout our testing, despite physical barriers such as walls and potential sources of interference from other electronic equipment. --Emily Bakko

There must be better phones out there........2000-12-03

I've had this phone for over a year and have been pleased with all aspects of it except for the reception. I do not use it over a wide area range. However, the phone never fails to fade out temorarily during a conversation. This has happened both in my current and my previous apartment. I also use a Sony SPP-D900 which I've had since '97 and although it has fewer features, it remains consistently reliable and clear (and is still running on the same battery as when I first bought it).

I like this phone. I especially like the feature of being able to scroll through the caller ID's on the handset and when you find the one you want, you can just hit one button to call that person back. Battery seems to last a long time.

has program memory and all the standard features and the voice quality is very good.

Our house has gone through countless cordless phones over the years. This is by far the best cordless phone we've ever used. The CID feature is great. An excellent buy.

Just what I was looking for!.......2000-04-22

I hadn't had a cordless phone in years because of the....quality of mylast one. Well, this one changed my perspective. I can use it all overmy house and yard (a one-acre lot!), and it's clear as a bell! I love the voicemail indicator & button (which dials your voicemail & passcode) and the built-in callerID as well. I use the "direct" button to store a calling code (such as 10-10-220), and the speed dial buttons are great-- though, I would prefer it if there was some way to label them or do lookup on the callerID screen. It will, however, call back a number from the callerID, and that's helpful, too.

All in all, a great phone... much better than I expected!
