3 out of 5 stars Nice, affordable DVD Player.......2007-02-15

We got this player to replace a no-name brand DVD player that had given a good run but decided to quit just-the-same.
This player presents a high quality picture (much better than what we received from the no-name player), great sound without increased volume (we could actually turn off a DVD without having our home obliterated by the high volume of the TV show playing when the DVD was turned off), and although we are not set up for true surround sound, the player did nicely augment the TV's built in surround sound feature.
It is very easy to operate; although I am comfortable with technology, my wife is, shall we say "challenged", yet she is able to navigate with the remote with great ease and little searching.
The player is compact and flat black so it sits right on top of our TV and does not stand out or look out of place. It holds only a single DVD so for those of you looking for a changer, search on.
I am sure that DVD players can be purchased for significantly larger sums of money and I am sure that they are nice, but if you are looking for a nice, dependable (haven't had problem one in a year) player that provides a clear picture and Dolby Surround Sound, then look no further.
This player will do the trick, without doing a trick on your bank account.

1 out of 5 stars Apparently, Samsung still hasn't fixed their problems.......2005-02-07

Two of the other reviewers here mentioned the picture breaking up on some discs. I had this problem, along with a skipping problem, on about HALF of the discs I tried -- but they played flawlessy on 3 other DVD players (by companies other than Samsung I might add). I actually have an earlier model Samsung DVD player, and it, along with other Samsung models at the time, had a horrible skipping problem on many DVDs. Samsung's support was almost non-existant -- I found out there was a firmware upgrade for the player, but not through their website (where I couldn't find any help whatsoever), but through a friend with the same problem. HOWEVER, the firmware upgrade did not resolve the problem, and the last I heard, there was a class action suit filed here in Pennsylvania (which I received an invitiation to be a part of, but could not participate in, I think because I no longer had the receipt). Considering their lackluster customer support, I would advise anyone against buying any DVD player from this company. Players are much cheaper nowadays anyway, and you can get an excellent Sony or Toshiba for a modest price.

3 out of 5 stars good entry level dvd player.......2002-05-30

this samsung model is a good value. while it's not the most consistent player on the market, for the price you pay you are getting a nice bargain. it froze up on one of the first movies we watched on it, but that might have been due to the fact that it was a blockbuster rental. basically, you get what you pay for. overall, its a nice dvd player for an even nicer price that you will enjoy for a long time.

3 out of 5 stars Pay a little more to get a better player.......2002-04-14

I bought the Samsung 101 a couple months ago as my first DVD player. The price seemed reasonable and I liked the remote control. I also liked the Samsung 1-year warranty on parts and labor. Most players have a 90-day warranty on labor, and a 1-year warranty on parts, which means you are taking a risk if you do not buy an extended service contract from your retailer.

Connection and set-up were fast and easy, and the owner's manual is excellent, logically organized and with clear instructions.

Picture and sound were fine, but there were sporadic, though noticeable, "break ups" in the picture where it would disintegrate into large pixels. These are not the fault of the discs, since they don't always happen in the same place at the same time.

More annoying than the occasional picture problems is the slowness with which the player loads the DVD and responds to the remote control. The remote response is so slow that I often was not sure if the player had even received the signal until 5 or 10 seconds after I had pushed the button. While you do get used to this after a while, it's a real drawback.

The ergonomics of the remote itself are very good, with an intuitive layout, but this is offset by the slowness of the player's response.

The player does a good enough job that it got me hooked on DVDs, but after a month, I relegated this player to the bedroom and bought a Toshiba (2800) that is far superior to the Samsung and only cost about [a bit] more.

The Toshiba also has a great feature that the Samsung lacks: the first zoom level on the Toshiba gives you a slightly larger letterboxed image for widescreen DVDs, without cutting off much at the sides and with no discernable loss of image sharpness. This is a real convenience on my 27" TV, maintaining the widescreen ratio but giving a bigger image. The Samsung has a feature called "S-Fit" which supposedly does the same thing, but the manual says it does not work on all discs, and I never got it to work on any of mine. The Toshiba works for all the discs I have and it's a feature I would not sacrifice.

Bottom line on the Samsung 101:

Pro: Good remote, good picture, good sound, 1-year warranty parts and labor, good instruction manual.

Con: Sporadic picture problems, slow to load DVDs and slow to respond to remote, 2-level zoom does not increase image size for widescreen DVDs.

If you want a good basic player and don't want to pay for an extended warranty, consider the Samsung.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures - half the time.......2002-04-08

We already have a Sony DVD player, this Samsung unit was purchased for another room. We were looking for a fairly cheap DVD player with decent picture quality and ease of use.
The Samsung unit was easy to hook up, and worked very well with the first two DVDs. The picture was crisp and clear, the colors bright. I can't comment on the quality of the sound, since the unit was hooked up to a - to put it mildly - inferior sound system.
Unfortunately, the initial favorable impression didn't last too long. The player has problems with about half the DVDs we have tried. The picture is fuzzy and very dark. With some DVDs it changes between the regular, good picture and the dark, fuzzy one.
Bottom line: if the performance was consistent, we'd be very pleased with our purchase. It is not, and we aren't.

Panasonic's vision of the digital future is driven by the needs and aspirations of its business customers and millions of consumers around the world who use Panasonic's products every day. The company shares its dream to live a fuller life by providing ways of working smarter and enjoying the rewards of technological advances.Panasonic's affordable noise-canceling headphones will help enhance any personal listening experience, whether it's appreciating the subtle nuances of music or just enjoying quieter surroundings. The RP-HC50 ear-bud headphones feature 2-level noise canceling, a separate controller, and XBS Extra Bass System.

Amazon.com Product Description

Panasonic's RP-HC50 dynamic earbud headphones are equipped with powerful noise-cancelation technology, making them an ideal companion for in-flight (or even on-bus) music lovers. Their noise reduction is effective over a range from 40 to 1,500 Hz, covering the part of the audible spectrum where human ears are most sensitive to sound.

Microphones located in each earpiece detect any non-musical, steady-state (essentially constant) environmental noise. This information is read and analyzed by a device that generates an inverse noise wave that is out of phase with the noise itself. By feeding this new noise back into the headset, the noise itself is audibly canceled, since the sum of the two waves, ideally, is zero. This eliminates a good deal of unwanted sonic junk, from airplane engine noise to distant freeway traffic seeping into your living room.

You get two levels of noise cancelation (approximately 5 dB and 10 dB of noise attenuation, respectively), depending on the degree of noise around you. Less attenuation conserves batteries but also reduces the effect of the cancelation on the low frequencies of your chosen program material--which, thanks to the headphones' XBS (extra-bass system design) is minimal to begin with.

The headphones operate for about 50 hours on a single AAA battery (supplied) and come with a handy slider to prevent slack ear cords getting tangled during use and a clothing clip to simplify operation. The RP-HC50's gold-plated .125-inch minijack connector is ultra-resistant to corrosion and other signal-degrading artifacts.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless Garbage.......2005-05-04

Don't waste your money on these. They not only fail in the noise-cancellation aspect - they also fail in comfort (the earbuds are about the size of a nickel), and they fail in volume control. I couldn't believe the poor quality put out by such a traditionally good quality company. This has jaded my view of Panasonic completely, and I'm unlikely to purchase anything with their label now. This was a complete waste of my money. Buy these, and you'll STILL need to find some noise-cancelling headphones. I purchased the low-cost Audiobahn 103NC headphones and they work excellently (although they're not earbuds)...Panasonic should take a lesson from them.

1 out of 5 stars Performance of Noise Cancelling Earbuds.......2004-10-27

These do not perform - a waste of money! Panasonic will not provide a refund after these are bought. The noise cancellation is negligble in actual use and the worst of all the several type of headphones that I have bought. I bought them and now use them only as standard earbuds with the inconvenience of the additional noiose cancelling electronics. Panasonic has produced and sold very good products - these earbuds are totally pathetic regarding noise cancellation.

4 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied.......2004-04-17

I wanted something to protect my hearing while I was mowing and weed eating. The louder the noise, the better the noise cancelling. This product works very well. The mower is not quiet but it is quieted enough so that I can hear the music easily over the noise. This was absolutely not perfect. The mower is still loud but it is quieted enough to hear music easily. I'm happy.

2 out of 5 stars Works OK, but there are better options at the same price.......2004-03-30

This is a neat idea, and if you've ever tried the Bose models that do the same thing, you've used something that works pretty good. The idea behind these is to take the noise from around you, invert the waveform and feed it back into your ears thus cancelling out some of the noise. They are intended for use on airplanes or in other slightly noisy environments. They are not designed to eliminate all of the noise around you, only noises at fairly low frequencies ( < 1200 Hz). These are slightly larger than your average earbuds to allow for the microphones required to get an input signal to invert.

OK, so how well do they work? Well, they don't work great. With the headphones on, they cut back on some of the noise around you on an airplane. I would be surprised if they were actually cancelling 10 dB of the noise that the instructions claim. They also have a fair amount of reduction in the power output from my MP3 player, so I have to turn the volume way up to hear the music. Given the chance to do it all over again, I would probably bring my Peltor H10A hearing protectors (also available at Amazon) with a pair of cheap earbuds on the plane instead. They don't have the same gee-whiz factor, but they work better and cost about the same.

Update: The Sony MDR-EX51LP will probably work better than this on an airplane as well. I've tried those in noisy environments and they do cut out a good bit of the background noise as well.

3 out of 5 stars Sound is decent but fit not comfortable.......2004-03-13

I've been looking for relatively inexpensive buds since my year-old really expensive sony NC 10 stopped working properly in just over 2 years (a year after being 'repaired' for the same poor connection problem!!). I bought these in January and have been using them every weekday on the transit bus. They have reasonably good sound and do noticeably cut down most external noise but they can be quite uncomfortable. You need to find the optimum position and then try to keep them in place!! They would be great (and got 4-5 stars rating from me) if the bud design was better(like the Sony with soft rubber inserts)so as to provide a better seal - I can't understand why they were not better designed.

4 out of 5 stars The Best phone ever!.......2006-03-28

Just purchased this phone from Amazon for less than 45 bucks! I love the look and feel of this phone. It works everywhere in my home. I purchased the very same phone in white about a year ago for around 80 bucks. This is a steal! If the price comes up, grab it!

3 out of 5 stars Feels solid, good features and comfortable but..........2006-03-22

Honestly the signal range is very bad, at about 50 feet there's no signal if there's a couple of walls between.

1 out of 5 stars Poor sound quality - interference from other electronics.......2006-03-19

Interference from other electronics is a severe problem - I had to return this item for a refund. If you can locate it several feet from any other electronics, it might work for you, but who wants a phone that you cannot place on your desktop, near a computer?

4 out of 5 stars Panasonic KX-TG5200M GigaRange Supreme 5.8 GHz DSS.......2006-03-17

Great phone - Great Price. Does not interfere at all with my wireless setup. Only one problem (this is the reason I gave only 4 stars instead of 5), the keyboard and screen light goes off to fast. Also Amazon had a great price...

5 out of 5 stars So far so good!.......2006-03-10

I bought this phone a few weeks ago and so far it has worked great. I've owned several different brands of cordless phones and I must say that Panasonic seems to be the best. I also purchased a different Panasonic phone with anwering machine at around the same time. Both are 5.8 Mhz and it's doubtful that I'll ever get anything other than Panasonic from now on.

3 out of 5 stars handy camera.......2005-08-28

this is good camera for the most part. just that at times there's a slight lag in pressing the button and the picture being taken...also the picture comes out as if you were shaking sometimes...but the 3 sec timer and other features are excellent...also great quality of pics and ease of use

4 out of 5 stars Good digital camera.......2005-02-22

I bought this camera I believe 3 years ago and have been satisified with it. I bought it to take on trips not wanting to hassle with 35mm cameras and film. It takes great pictures in the daylight, nightime not so much but that is common with most digital photography. The camera does drain the batteries quickly but using rechargable batteries is a must with most digital cameras...turning off the digital display during photography does help this. I am overall satisfied with this camera and am not sorry I bought it!

5 out of 5 stars Best set of features and qualilty for the price.......2005-02-06

I had always used a manual 35mm camera, and wanted to get into digital but did not want my first digital camera to be a really expensive one (since I am learning the digital side and have not yet built enough knowledge to know exactly what I will need in my final, expensive camera yet). I chose this camera based on its price, megapixel count, and ability to switch to a full manual mode. After getting three sets of NiMH batteries and a charger, I have been well satisfied. With an ISO equiv of 100, 200, or 400 and a shutter speed of 1/1000 down to 1/2 and then extended as far as 30 secs with an internal processing stage, I was able to take a still life shot in almost total darkness by setting the camera on a tripod and using f2.9, 30sec exposure. It does love daylight. The digital zoom comes out a bit grainy in low light situations, but with daylight you can zoom all the way out optical and digital and still get good crisp images. I found the flash to be a bit underpowered, which means that closeups are too harshly lit and distant shots dont get enough light. But there are tricks I have learned to use to get super quality flash pics: Back up from the subject and then zoom in a bit rather than zooming out and being physically close to the subject (at too close range, you get harsh flash with uneven flashlense lines on the subject). Also, holding a small piece of tissue over the flash will make really nice pictures because it softens and diffuses the light -- no more shiny spots on foreheads. I really like the ability to choose standard or vibrant color, and the choice of color, b&w, or sepia. The timer works well for eliminating shaky hands even on handheld shots because you are not pushing the shutter manually and can concentrate on a still handhold. The only manual feature it doesn't really do completely is focus. There are settings for 1m and 3m and infinity. The closeup macro and the AF are both autofocus and will need a bit of good lighting in order to lock on. I sometimes shine a bright light at the subject while going to the half-pressed shutter and then turn off the light to actually snap the picture (only works if setting exposure manually - otherwise the extra light will cause the autoexposure to choose the wrong settings). So if you want to experiment and have fun with digital photography and dont want to pay a lot, this is an excellent choice. If you are not that interested in the photography of it, and only want the "soccer mom's point-and-shoot weekender for occasional birthday parties etc" then there are other cameras that are faster to start up, have bigger flash units, and use less battery power. But then they dont have all the settings that this one has for really creative photography on a budget.

4 out of 5 stars Serves its purpose well enough but I could have done better.......2004-12-14

I desperately needed a new digital camera and for the price I jumped on this one. WIth a canon glass lens and decent firmware this camera does take great shots when the lighting and settings are synched. PROS: nice image quality, SSD cards are great, video is a nice bonus, menus are easy to use, has manual settings for experimenting, great power conservation. CONS: no sound on video (I didn't think I'd miss this as much as I do), flimsy lens cover, autofocus can be finnicky especially when using zoom (just optical I turn off digital zoom). All in all it is a solid buy and I have had good luck with toshiba products in general, but I still can't get the autofocus to work on closeup shots and really miss not having sound on my videos.

3 out of 5 stars Toshiba PDR4300 4MP Digital Camera.......2004-07-16

I find the camera takes great photographs and easy to use. I just got this camera about a couple weeks ago and I had to call support about erasing the photo's. To my surprise they say it will be a $20.00 charge for help. Now since good money was paid for this camera and a good brand name you think they would help you. Another thing I would recommend using rechargeable batteries as they last longer and cheaper too. I did find out how to erase the photo's. It is a great camera and enjoy owning it. It is not like the old days when an answer could be given freely. You can't register the camera on the web site as it is being discontinued, and information is so old it does not help you. I give the camera high marks for quality. Support 00 in my book.

Combining quality performance with stylish design, the Panasonic KXTG2670N operates on the 2.4 GHz band with digital signal for clear reception and crisp conversations. The phone also features digital 24-channel autoscan, spread spectrum technology, and voice scrambling for security.

A noteworthy feature of the phone is its dual-base antenna system, which improves reception by using two antennas for better signal sensitivity and less background interference. Enjoy hands-free conversation, thanks to digital speakerphones on both the base and the handset, complete with two-way paging intercom.

For those who subscribe to Caller ID service, offered by most local carriers, the handset's backlit three-line LCD makes screening and tracking your calls a breeze. Fifty phone numbers are stored in the Caller ID memory, acting as a virtual phone book for quick callbacks. In addition, the KXTG2670N boasts a digital answering system, with three mailboxes.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it...MISS IT TOO.......2007-07-03

I owned this phone for about 2 years...love it, everything works just as advertised, and I wish i could find out where I could get another one...as this one was stolen from my home a year or so ago...and I have yet to find a phone that compares...not hardly!

1 out of 5 stars Phone went dead in just over a year...No help from Panasonic.......2005-01-07

I have had this phone for over a year now and it is on its last leg. I have kept the phone in perfect condition and treated it with great care thinking that I would have it for some time. Well this week it started cutting out during calls and making strange noises while in the call. I call Panasonic and they claim that they have had very little problems with the phone and would not help me in any way except for me to send the phone back and pay $70 for a referb phone that could also go bad in a year. Panasonic needs to own up to the fact that they built a phone that has a major design flaw. I own thousands of dollars worth of Panasonic gear and if this is the way they treat a loyal customer I will not be buying there product EVER again.

1 out of 5 stars Dont believe anyone who likes this phone!.......2003-05-18

Anyone who says they like it, doesn't use it.

What does work? Yes, the speaker phone works both on the base and handset. You can acutally dial out, that works too.

OK, the hold button works too.

What doesn't work: everything else. I've had this for about two years now. And I _try_ to use the features. I read the manual. BUT:

The screens are too hard to read.

The menu system was done by someone who knows nothing about human-machine interfaces. It's very awkward to use.

The autodialer (directory) is painfully slow. I just timed it. To scroll through the list and pick the third entry takes 7 seconds, and I cheated since I pressed keys before I could see that I should. That may not seem like a lot in print, but how long should it take? I think it should be more like 2 seconds.

Some of the phone programming requires you to use the base station and handset at the same time. For example, if you want to change the numbers of rings before the answering machine picks up. Why would anyone software developer worth his pay develop a system where sometimes you do it all on the handset, sometimes you need both the handset and base? Laziness, pure and simple.

The round toggle button on both the base and hand set frequently do not register presses. The one on the handset is just to small for a multifunction switch.

Even the labels of some buttons are bad. On the handset, one is called 'direct'. What does that mean? Another is labeled 'function/ch'. You tell me.

The connection from handset to base sometimes drops out, usually just as I answer the phone. And I'm only 40 feet from the base!

The answering machine function is buggy. The telemarketers that call and hang up on the machine cause the answering machine to indicate a message is waiting. If you listen to the message, you hear about 5-10 seconds of silence, then a 1/2 second of some previously recorded (and erased) message.

Another reviewer wrote that the handset is small enough for a woman but big enough for a man. Well my hands aren't that big but I have to hold it by me fingertips.

You can't please everybody, especially with something like handset size. I can live with that. If Panasonic hired some decent engineers (especially software), they could probably make this phone decent. But as it stands now, don't buy this phone.

5 out of 5 stars I absolutely LOVE this phone.......2003-01-11

Why do I love it? The handset is small enough for a woman's hand, but big enoug for a guy to use. The speakerphone on the handset works incredibly well and has been immensely helpful with a little one around. This phone is practical and durable. My toddler has abused this phone in every imaginable way and it still works! My husband wants to get a new phone with several handsets and I've been fighting it all the way because I don't want to lose this phone. Other Panasonic phones I've seen have different handsets.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cordless phones on the market.......2002-12-04

I've owned this model for close to two years now and I absolutely love it! It's small, light weight, wearable, clear and full of features. The one complaint I have about this phone is that I'm having difficulties with some of the buttons on my headset keypad. Since I've used the phone so much the buttons I press the most frequently are wearing out and my LCD display is fading slightly but this is not going to stop me from buying the same model all over again. The other thing I would like to mention is that this phone has taking a beating! I've dropped this phone more times than I would like to count and each time I just picked up the phone and kept on talking.
