Outastanding.......2007-04-03

I bought this TV two years ago to the month and have had no problems with it at all, still has the original bulb. My CC warranty is up in two weeks and i'm wondering whether to renew it or just buy a new bulb online and replace myself. The picture has been great for the past 24 months. I don't have the TV in a entertainment center so it doesn't have a chance to heat up, it just sit out in the open so it cools off nicely.

BEWARE SAMSUNG DLP DESIGN FLAWS!!!.......2007-03-30

Consumers should be aware of serious design flaws which exist in Samsung DLP televisions. Cooling fans and color wheels are highly susceptible to failing. (As a non-techniocal person I should have no idea what these parts are, but alas, I bought a Samsung DLP) Expect these to fail within 1-2 years. Expect to pay approx $400 to replace the color wheel and $200 to replace the colling fan. That is, if your service technician can find them in stock anywhere. These parts are commonly in a national backorder because of the very high failure rates.

You should also expect the lamp to fail sooner than advertized. Many people need to purchase a new lamp between 1-2 years, and some more often than that. The lamp costs approx $150-$250 depending on your model, but you should be able to replace it yourself without too much difficulty. This cost will be in addition to replacement costs for the color wheel and colling fan. Please remember that these maintenance costs are recurring, and you will have to fix them again in another 1-2 years.

While I was very satisfied with the quality and performance of my DLP, my color wheel failed very early. I called tech support to report a grinding noise, and was told to "turn it off", wait 15 minutes, and turn it back on like this would fix the problem. After doing this for a while, the color wheel finally failed, actually shattered! Now I am out of warranty, and Samsung wants nothing to do with me. I have even tried ordering the part myself from two different online vendors, and they are both backordered indefinitely! It has been 6 weeks and they have no estimate for when this part will be available. Samsung cannot even give me an estimate when the supply of replacement parts is expected to meet demand. I have had my TV for 18 months, and apparently there is a national epidemic of them breaking at the same time!

I have a 42" Samsung Plasma which is a beautiful set along with a 26" CRT. Both are wonderful products, but Samsung is selling DLP LEMONS and will not stand behind them. DLP is a great bargain up front, but a maintenance NIGHTMARE! You will pay in the long run, and by the long run I mean every 2 years. If you still want to purchase a DLP television, PLEASE BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY! IT WILL SAVE YOU A TON, BUT YOU WILL STILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE CIRCUIT CITY TECH TO FIND PARTS WHICH MAY TAKE MONTHS!

I expect Samsung to abandon their design flaw riddled DLP sector, and focus on their beautiful plasma line. Expect DLP prices to drop even further, but please...LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP!

so i got this dlp tv about 3 months ago and right away i noticed there are marks from the inside. then i get lines that last for a few hours at a time, in less time between as time went on, and just now the lamp exploded, scared the hell out of me!!! now i get to wait for a replacement lamp from samsung... not looking forward to going through all the bs involved with this, a big mistake buying a samsung dlp. thats what i get for thinking i was getting a good deal. i guess the 1 year warranty is a good thing, but i definitely don't trust it now, it nearly caused a fire!!!

Low Quality Products, poor after market service!.......2006-05-31

From the moment i opened the box it was trouble, the screen had marks on it, then motherboard needed to be replaced and then another picture problem occurred finally Samsung gave up and replaced it. Dealing with Samsung customer service is probably the worst in the business, i have had a better experience at the DMV (no joke). After over 30 calls to Samsung, being constantly lied to and them never calling me back they finally replaced the TV, however this took over 2 months. A year later the color wheel broke and now i am in Samsung hell, with the customer service department. It's now been a month and they still haven't managed to call me back, for my sanity I have now given up and decided to pay for the repairs for myself. Don't buy Samsung, the products are unreliable and the after market service is diabolical.

Bought this tv as an open box at Best Buy for $1,799.00, used the Rewards Zone to get points and got $60 in gift certificates, was able to finance for 18 months no interest. The only thing missing was the manual and I emailed Samsung and they emailed it to me 2 days later!! (now I see that another version is available here in Amazon) What a response talk about service!!

The tv is plain awesome, highly recommend it, great product!

I wouldnt buy a philips product.......2005-12-06

The front of my 2 month old Philips television is seperating from the back. Who knew that you could get such shoddy workmanship for such a high price. If you want to get quality for your money stay away from Philips and definetly dont buy anything expensive from them or Best Buy because the service after the sale is just as shoddy. I would have given it a no star but that was not an option.

Minor Problems.......2006-08-07

I too had sound problems where the sound would go out after the tv had been on for about 3 hours. After letting the tv cool down for around 15 minutes it was good again. Bought it from Sears. They replaced the digital/audio board with no resolution. The techs were honest and told me they never had this problem with a Samsung before and weren't sure what the root of the problem was. Tech called Samsung directly from my house. Found it was the Power board was short circuting when heated up. All replaced under the two year warranty. No problems since repair. Tech did tell me they had more problems similar to this with the toshiba's and Sony's. This TV has a great picture and is far better than most comparably priced tv's I have the 3 year service agreement. Tech said anyone who didn't buy the agreement was crazy. Digital/audio board w/out labor was $512 and the power board was $212 labor was $181 first trip $222 the second since they had to take more of the tv apart. Moral is: don't buy a plasma w/out a service agreement.

Blackout problems.......2005-06-24

I've had the set about three weeks and have already replaced the main circuit board. The problem is that the screen and sound disappear for about 5 seconds several times an hour. The new board has slowed the problem but not eliminated it; it now blacks out about once an hour.

I've replaced my cables and my satellite box but nothing changed.

When it works the picture is amazing considering the price and the fact that this is EDTV. The sound through the provided speakers is adaquate.

A couple of days ago, I'd have said that too!.......2005-04-13

My Samsung 4231 is about 6 weeks old. 3 days ago, I would have rated it 5 stars, easy! Today, maybe one star. Let me explain... It was everything the other reviewer said and more until a couple of days ago. This is my second HDTV, and the picture clarity and brightness blows away my HD Toshiba projection wide screen by a mile. Non-HD programming is really amazing on this set. It is almost as good as HD broadcasts on other equipment; and of course HD programming is mind-blowing. I don't think there could be a better picture at any price. HOWEVER, the past couple of days, this Plasma beauty has started acting up on me. It simply goes black (no picture) for about 15 minutes, and then comes back on. The sound is uninterupted. It goes black on all inputs. It might do it 3 or 4 times a over a 3 hour (or so) period. I have no idea why this happens, or what happens to make the picture come back. I haven't caught it going dark if I leave it on over 3 hours, but it only started a couple of days ago. If anyone knows what might be going on, I'd love to hear about it.

From shipping date to delivery date Amazon.com rated very good in my book. Cant say enough about tv for the price. picture quality is great. I used the S video hookup from my satelite dish box to receive the signal, nite and day differance between picture quality. black is black not a grayish black, tv came with speakers and table top stand, which is about a $700.00 savings,that most plazmas dont include when you buy them. buyer beware of this when buying these tv's. many other accessories came with tv as well, sound from speakers is plenty good for me, i spent a few months looking at all other brands at stores and to get one with a better picture quality it would cost over $3000.00 more and was'nt worth the extra bucks in my book, rather have the extra monies for a surround sound system to go with this tv if i needed it. on screen setup fetures are so simple its great. thank you Amazon.com thinking of getting another for my house, this ones in my garage.great addtion to my party room, everyone who has seen it so far cant say enough good about it.as i said, use a s video cable to receive your tv signal if possible, hookup with cable wire is still good picture quality, cant beat the s video hookup thou for tv reception quality.NASCAR RACES AND SPORTS CANT BE VIEWED ANY BETTER. And i dont have HD hookup yet,dont think i will waste the monies for that either, picture clarity is unreal.

Overkill?.......2000-10-03

I replaced the standard video cable running from my Monster splitter to my aging, 70" Mitsubishi projection TV. I had been so pleased with the signal splitter I figured this too would be a big performance booster. It wasn't. It's certainly good quality cable and connectors, but I didn't get a good return on my investment.

Excellent product but beware of the bad ports syndrome........2003-08-31

I bought this brand new FR114W last year end of July. It has worked like a charm ever since until recently. First let me give you the pluses.
_Automatic recognizes PPOE settings for easy authentication and setup.
_Firewall a plus nothing gets past it until you enter a ip:port map to your internal network.
_Logs, another plus, it gives details of all attempts of access to your current WAN ip. DDOS, ipspoofing etc. as well, it emails the logs acording to your rules...
_syslog entries to any internal syslog capable software of all activities that the FR114W fires at the logs.
_It registers your dynamic ip address from the PPOE connection to DynDNS.org which is a big PLUS. Although they can have more options like noip.com
_DHCP capable Lan Setup.
_Remote internet management. This is not recommended unless you restrict it to a particular ip but beware of ip spoofing.
_Wireless ready. WEP ready up-to 128 bit encryption, Trusted PCs by MAC although MediaAccessControl can be spoofed as well, but then they would have to try to guess the key for the encryption as well as the channel and if you have unchecked "SSID brodcast" and "Bridging to wired LAN" you should be pretty safe. Although they can still guess your pwd for the admin site of the FR114W and then your doomed.
_Block access to any site you wish. This is specially good if you want control any access to a particular site from your kids. Drawback is that you have to enter every site you want to block fqdn (fully qualify domain name ex. www.thissite.com) or ip address. But you have the control.

These are by far the most important features which are hard to find without a hefty price tag.

The negatives are
_With the 802.11b MA401 wireless card, access range is weak. At my house a radius of 30ft. is pushing its limit.
_The 4 ports at the back of my FR114W unit went bad after a year of non-stop usage. But Netgear has a 3 yr. warranty on this units so they are replacing it, but choose from three options.
1. send the unit and when we receive it we'll send you one back.
2. $15 +/- and we'll send you one then you send us the bad one back.
3. $25 +/- and we send you one overnight of course I have to send the bad one back.

Anyways, I did go with option 2 and I should be receiving the refurbished FR114W soon. Yeap, you read correctly "refurbished" which in the dictionary means "To make clean, bright, or fresh again; renovate." so I do not feel that bad.

Overall, I give this FR114W unit high ratings as I do not expect for everyone to go through the bad ports syndrome as I did. Also I hope that the refurbish unit does live up to my ratings of it.

Excellent router, wireless signal slightly weak.......2003-01-18

This is an excellent router with rock solid performance. Unlike my previous Linksys BEFSR41 which needs to be reset every couple of weeks and drops game connections more often than Iýd like. This one maintains game connection well. Router admin operations (most) does not drop any existing connections, unlike the Linksys which resets the router at the slightest configuration change. The SPI firewall works nicely and the latest firmware (beta as of this writing) supports UPNP (Windows Messenger Audio/Video). One nice feature is you can turn off the wireless to LAN bridge, so your roommates can surf the internet but canýt physically access any machine wired directly to the router.

On the down side, the wireless signal strength (with a Netgear wireless card) is a little on the weak side. Hardly a surprise considering itýs using the wireless card. You may re-consider if you need one that covers a lot of range. The telnet interface is also gone, but most people probably donýt care. At one time, my router started to emit a high pitch hiss, caused by long usage of the wireless portion. I disconnected the power for a while and now it seems to be ok. Maybe they used a cheap component somewhere.

Thereýs a different model called FR114P, essentially the same, except it lacks the wireless slot but adds a print server port. You may look into it if you donýt need wireless capabilities.
