Looking for a great laser printer for your home or small office but don't want to break the bank? Consider the Lexmark Optra E310, which consistently pumps out crisp text and detailed grayscale images with maximum true resolution of 600 x 600 dpi. It also comes with some terrific driver software, and works with both PCs and Macs, thanks to its built-in USB and parallel port functionality.

We tested the E310 with the USB interface and were able to install both the hardware and its requisite drivers in less than 10 minutes. We had the same success with the parallel connection. It's worth noting that neither a USB nor a parallel cable is included, though the unit does come with a toner cartridge.

Based on our tests, the Optra E310 is among the best laser printers in its price class. Able to print up to 8 ppm, it was relatively quiet, and the output was consistently, phenomenally sharp. We noticed a few faint vertical streaks when we printed an all-black test page, but normal text and graphics never failed to please us. Many laser printers in this price range apply toner on all-black portions of the page that looks slightly blotchy--from an angle it resembles tree bark. But with the Optra E310, black areas of the page were deep, uniform, and precise. All the text we printed had razor-sharp edges that didn't break up at all when viewed through a magnifying glass, and the majority of print aberrations that we did see were caused by the grain of the paper, not the quality of the printer. Printouts on high-quality coated paper were as close to perfect as any we've seen.

The Optra 310 performed with similar aplomb when we printed charts and grayscale images, laying down clearly separated shades of gray with few streaks, specks, or other unwanted elements creeping in. The driver software is robust, with advanced features such as the ability to print from two to 16 pages on a single sheet of paper. Even the printed manual is well written. I bought this printer because my I print alot of b/w text material. My inket ink was very expensive.

I love this laser printer! It has extremely sharp text. I've owned it for a few years and i'm still using the original cartridge. The Lexmark name for quality holds true with this one.

My department placed about 15 of these and the newer E312 model on user's desks over the past 9 months or so. We've been very happy with them thus far. Our goal was to displace as many inkjets in the department as possible (inkjets cost a small fortune on a per page basis) and the E310 has been excellent in this role.

Since this printer's "little brother", the Optra E210, came out we have standardized on it. It is a bit cheaper and is actually rated slightly faster at 12ppm. The E210 also seems a bit smaller if desktop space is a concern.

I have not had the noise concerns that another reviewer has expressed.. perhaps I should get my hearing checked!

Excellent print quality and speed, but too noisy for me..........2000-08-20

I bought this unit to replace the HP LaserJet 3150 that simply refused to work with one of our two computers. The Optra turned out to be much noisier than the HP, and in a small room, it's just uncomfortable. I'm returning it and will be trying to get the HP to work; I now feel a little more respectful of the LaserJet--I needed the comparison to realize how quiet it is. The noise is not too bad and may not be a problem for you if the printer is not right next to you or you're not as particular about the background hum. Again, the printing is fast and crisp and the installation was a breeze (on Win2000, I simply plugged it in, and the system recognized the printer automatically and installed the driver).

Exactly what I need........2007-03-05

I actually purchased this television used, so it was an even better deal. It fits perfectly in my entertainment center and produces great quality video. I have an Xbox 360 and an HD cable box and they both work great with it. I also have a Yamaha surround sound system. I've had no problems with it and it has been almost a year and half now.

Piece of Junk.......2005-06-08

Ordered this TV two years ago from Amazon. Free Shipping, Great Price. Delivery was OK. 1 Guy showed up so I helped him take it to the viewing room. Got everything hooked up. Realized Cable Box wasn't HD ready so got another one ($10/month extra). Got it all hooked up, great picture for about a week. Then I noticed big yellow splotch. Called Amazon said to call Philips. Ok, must use authorized service center. Called them, supposed to show up in the morning, showed up at 1:30. Said he needed to order a part. 3 weeks later brings out part, wrong part and doesn't show up on time. Orders the new part another 4 weeks. No TV because he took out another part so he could put it all back together and bring it back out. Finally got it working after another week. Doesn't show up on time. Going good for about a year then noticed the blue/red would not stay converged. Messed around with it about once a week. Kept getting worse until I would fix it as best I could and an hour later it would be messed up. Called Service Place. $200 to look at the problem and they took the TV. Probably $500 if they can fix it. $800 if they need a new part from Philips. Should have got the extened warranty on this one. Based on other reviews not holding out much hope.

Utter Garbage.......2005-01-07

I bought this TV 2 years ago (December 2002) for $2300 from BB. I did a lot of research and found this to have the best value for my needs. Well, 6 months into ownership I started having a lot of problems with the TV. I was getting color bleed (not just a little, a lot!) I was getting image ghosting from any input and any resolution, so it was not device related. I called Philips and they sent out one of their "approved" HDTV repair contractors. They came out in July, ordered a part from Philips then returned in August. Philips sent the wrong part. Re-ordered the part, it came late August. We tried to put the part in but it did not fit tight enough to make the connection work AND the part was a "refurbished" part. Re-ordered a new part. The part finally came in September, but the repair contractors could not come out until October because they were so busy. They come out and install the new part. Voila! No change. Repair man leaves cause they are so busy and we have to reschedule. He comes back out later that month, decides to order a new part. Part comes in November and we replace it in November, still no change. Keep in mind also, that every part that was sent to the repairman was a "Refurbished Part". The repairman is confused, and Im very pissed. Ive taken over 8 days of vacation and dealt with this issue for over 5 months. I call Philips customer service and get connected to someone over in India/Pakistan. I can hardly understand them. In any case, they refuse to replace the TV under teh Lemon Law because I did not have the service done at each interval with a minimum of 30 days between each repair.....!!!!! WTH? So Philips not only does not honor their warranty, their TVs are garbage (BTW, I also bought a Philips progressive scan DVD player at the same time and I have had to replace that within a year as well), and their repair folks can not even repair their own equipment. I strongly recommend avoiding any Philips product. Luckily I had an extended warranty on that TV and was able to get a very nice 55" Mitsubishi as a replacement via the Ext. Warranty company. I could not be happier with that Mitsu set. It is like night and day vs. the Philips. If you buy any Philips product, beware the product and customer service. Its so much headache dealing with them. It makes you wonder how companies can stay in business doing things like this.

NIGHTMARE COMPANY TO DEAL WITH!.......2004-12-17

My husband and I purchased this TV in February and although we like the TV itself, Philips has awful customer service! We have not had a TV for about 4 months now and just today, after calling everyday and talking to everyone Philips ever employed, we are finally getting a refund. We even had an attorney try to contact someone to help us and he couldn't even speak to anyone who knew what they were talking about. I don't fault Philips for the product not working, that was Electronics Expo's fault for selling us a damaged product and then blowing us off, but Philips should be more organized and take care of their customers in a more orderly fashion.
Needless to say, we are going to purchase another TV, but not a Philips or from the Electronics Expo!

I purchased this TV from Amazon about a month ago. Delivery and setup was flawless. The TV itself has a great display, viewable from most angles (much better than the 52" RCA I was looking at). The sound is good and should be adequate for most rooms - I have a 600 Watt Surround system, so I haven't done much with the TV audio. Great price, Great picture and tax free to boot!

Compared to my previous monitor (a ViewSonic E771), the depth of the Samsung SyncMaster 750s is about 15.7 inches ... which I just TOTALLY love!! I ended up having the same screen size & getting a little more real estate at my computer's workstation at the same time. I also noticed that it was much lighter that I thought it'd be. After hooking everything up, all I had to do was turn it on, make some minor adjustments to the display settings, and I was up & running in no time. Also, the dot pitch of this monitor is 0.23 mm, which gives you a much sharper image.

The CD-ROM that comes with the Samsung SyncMaster 750s contains the necessary drivers you'll need to install & color management software called "Natural Color" which, supposedly (according to what I read), provides accurate & predictable color matching to give you the best image quality possible. My opinion? The software needs to be made a tad bit more user friendly. But after using it the first time, I've noticed that Quake 3 Team Arena looked a HELL of a lot better than it did using the monitor's default settings, and that overall image quality has also improved. So if you're up to it, go for it. You can always reset everything if you don't like the results. Overall, I'm amazed that I managed to get a technology-packed monitor like this at such a low price. I definately got my money's worth by purchasing this monitor.

The samsung syncmaster 750s has all the features you would expect from a monitor in this price range. The unit I received had no visible defects and had a sturdy feel to it.

The screen is bright and displays images in rich detail. The default color settings worked well. I did have to use the on screen display to adjust the geometry just a little.

The monitor was easy to configure and use in mandrake linux 9.2 it is one of the supported monitors in that distributions X configuration utility.

As to the length of service I have had the monitor for a few weeks now and it seems that it will be my primary display for years to come. A friend of mine has a slightly larger model that has lasted several years without any maintanance other then the occasional cleaning.

The monitor shipped with a install cd that included some color calibration utilities and the like. I Choose only to install the windows xp driver from it. Windows driver configuration was simple and fast. It is my understanding that the install disk also has drivers for several older versions of windows. I also tested the monitor with the generic windows xp plug and play drivers. It was well supported there to and performed adequately .

Attaching the monitor stand was simple and it its fit was secure. The stand offers at tilt feature with a fairly wide range of viewing positions.

Overall I would highly recommend this monitor to any computer user in need of a good reasonably priced durable CRT. While not quite suitable for high end art and drafting work it otherwise provides a great display for all other purposes.

Worked better than internal 54g card.......2004-10-13

This card works great and I haven't had any problems with it in spite of abusing it. However, the price seems a little high. You can buy newer models and even 802.11g cards for less.

I have used this card on 2 laptops. I used it on a work laptop that I used for travel, and then gave it to my daughter for her laptop, which she abuses. There is even a dent in the metal case. I was worried because about a quarter of the card sticks out from the laptop (for the antenna).

It came right up on both my computers, and I don't think I even needed to use the installation disc (maybe I did, I can't remember, but if I did, it was so easy that I forgot about it). Both my laptops have Windows XP.

The signal is very good. It is much better than the factory installed card that came with a Compaq computer. It is about the same as the internal card I have on an IBM laptop.

Note that with a router and this card, I am not able to get a good connection everywhere in my house. I blame that on the router and not the card. There are only so many walls 802.11 technology can penetrate. To get wireless connection to a remote bedroom, I bought a Buffalo router and repeater kit. It works great, when it works (the router had to be sent back to be fixed.)

Note that I have researched wireless networking systems, and they don't seem to be very reliable, especially wireless routers. I had both a Netgear and Buffalo wireless routers where the radio portion went out. These cards are probably more reliable.

If all you need this for is the internet, 802.11b is sufficient, because DSL or cable modems are not any faster. If you want to send video data between computers then you should go with 802.11g.

Great for OTHER operating systems and older laptops.......2004-07-27

The Netgear MA401 802.11b Wireless PC Card is great for Windows 95, NT, Linux and Macintosh operating systems. The reason is that there are no other wireless cards that I know of that have DRIVERS for the wireless card to operate with the other operating systems. Newer Netgear products will not work.

The MA401 has a 16 bit PCMCIA interface is great for some older laptops that will not support a newer 32 bit cardbus interface.

This is in addition to the fact the MA401 is built well and has very good signal strenght.

After using this with the MR814 router for over a year, my computer no longer recognizes this product as a wireless adapter. When it's plugged in, it's identified as the MA_(four box symbols), and won't recognize the drivers that are installed because of this bogus product name. The last time this happened, tech support, which was previously very helpful with set up (terrible, incomplete instructions included in the box), had me try to ping my router a few times and then said they couldn't help anymore. Since this problem has happened multiple times, I have fixed it by uninstalling the bogus name from the device manager list and then plugging the card back in, which usually worked. Once I had to do a system restore--I'd like to not resort to that again.

This may be a problem with the "hibernate" as in some previous reviews (my computer has hibernate issues anyway), but this latest problem occurred after a full shut down. When it works, I was pretty happy with it (wireless is amazing), but I've had regular enough headaches that I can't recommend it, at least not with my low-end Dell laptop.

Easy, never fails.......2004-01-27

I have 2 wireless cards, one being this one. It works better, never fails me, and gets better reception than my other one. It was easy to install. It, as does any wireless card, does stick out from the computer, but it's very sturdy and I've never had a problem during my daily travels with the computer.
