EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE VS COST.......2006-09-13

I ordered 20 or so of the TRU-448 for use around the office. I have had nothing but positive feedback from all the users that this model was issued to. I also purchased a set for use at home. It has been over two years and aside from our pet rabbit chewing through the power cord for the remote unit we haven't had any issues whatsoever. The range and reception around home is outstanding and the battery life is much better than expected after 2 years of use.

Although several other reviewers have complained about static or poor voice quality, this phone system has been great for us. Never a problem, easy to set up and use, clear voice quality and very reliable. Uniden has been my brand of choice for years. The only reason for giving this phone 4 instead of 5 stars-- the fact that you can't use the two handsets at the same time. The other day I was on the phone and I started getting a low battery warning beep from the handset I was using. I went to switch over to the other one, and discovered I couldn't. I had to hang up and call the person back from the other handset. Not exactly convenient, but not a dealbreaker for me either.

One of the handsets lost its ability to transmit, just after the warranty expired.

But wait, there's more:

These two handsets do NOT share phonebook information -- if you plan to store telephone numbers for easy dialing, you'll have to enter them twice. There's no way to beam phonebooks from one to the other, like some Siemens phones do.

We tried one third-party headset, and it did not work well. We bought the Uniden HS910 Headset (an additional $20) and it is only barely adequate; both its speaker and microphone produce substandard sound.

All in all we've been underwhelmed with this unit, and we're looking to replace it even though we've only owned it for 14 months.

Good phone, but even with the highest quality headsets, and with a Mic Sensitivity maxed out, people had difficulty hearing me. Do not buy this if you intend to use a headset.

After reading some of the reviews, I figured could return the phone if needed. Well theres no need to! It works fine. I'm a broadcast engineer and I am pretty picky about the technical details of most consumer equipment. I don't know why others have reported poor sound quality, I don't have that problem at all. It sounds fine. The phone is compact/light and has super range. It even works with our 2.4 gig wireless access point located just 3 feet away from the base. The caller ID works everytime and the reminder for pending messages isn't obnoxious, just a gentle beep that you have a message pending. You can retrieve your messages from the handset but no, you can't use both handsets at the same time, but I didn't expect that. The options all in all are pretty good. I wish it had a way to choose the outgoing message based on CID, but that would also be a luxury. For the money, this has been a good phone for us!

OK, but looking for better.......2006-09-20

This phone was economical, and has proven to be a good value. However, it lacks features that have me looking to buy a more feature-rich replacement.

1) Telephone directories cannot be shared between phones. I finally gave up and started relying on my cell phone's contact list instead. It just takes too much time to program all the phones at the same time. We also kept getting the phones mixed-up, so I never knew which phone had the "correct" phone number.

2) This phone is not compatible with WiFi networks. There is no mechanism for excluding a portion of the 2.4 GHz spectrum. It helped to change my wireless router's channel number, but I still get kicked off the network routinely.

3) Handsets do not contain a speaker phone. This is something I never thought about until recently when call centers started getting relocated to India. At least it does supports a headset.

4) No service during a power outage.

This phone is the land phone at my home.

I like that on the phone itself it has "remote playback". This means that if you have a message, a little red light will flash, and you push remote playback button. You can hear your messages.

This feature is also great when you walk into the house. If you see the red light flash you have a message.

The phone also features phonebook and about 10 different ringtones.

You can set a different ringtone for everyone in your phonebook so you know who is calling without picking up the phone.

This phone has caller ID capability, but, you have to pay extra with your phone company to have it. :(

It is expandable, we have expanded it, we have one in the living room and one in my mom and dad's room.

The dock has speaker phone, answering machine, page, and antenna.

On the expandable phones though, they do no have spaeker phone,page, or even answering machine. :(

You can even fast forward or skip a message on the dock AND EVEN ON REMOTE PLAYBACK!Just press 1 for F.F. and 3 for R.W., 4 to delete.

It does have redial.

Overall, this is a good family phone. Put the main dock in the kitchen, 1 in each room, and maybe outside.

Oh yha, my dad takes this phone outside all the time, he's dropped it about 5 times, still works great!

Still a great phone!.......2003-12-20

Well I've owned the Uniden TRU-448 2.4GHz DSS cordless phone system for 2 and a half years now and it still works as well as the day I bought it. That in and of itself says a lot, considering that prior to buying this phone, I went through about 8 others in a year's time.

The sound quality is extremely clear for a surprisingly great distance away from the base unit and the digital answering system is great for screening calls (you can use a pre-recorded digital voice instead of recording your own message, if you so desire) and can be set up so that you can check your messages remotely using a self-programmed 3-digit security code. The speakerphone works flawlessly and the programmable features are easy to set-up as explained in the manual. It has a comfortable ergonomic design, is compatible with most standard headsets and has useful features like programmable speed-dial and variable ring-tones. It is also surprisingly sturdy for such a lightweight piece of equipment as I have accidentally dropped it a few times and it has suffered no adverse effects (though I don't recommend testing this intentionally).

Of course, it has all of the standard features like caller ID with call waiting, flash, redial, light-up keys, volume settings, etc. For me, the biggest selling point was the ability to add-on additional phones in other locations of your home or office without the need for more phone jacks. All you need is an electrical outlet where you want your additional handset(s) and you are good to go! Saves you having to call the phone company to install more phone jacks, as long as the "homebase" unit is plugged into a live phone jack. Less cables and junk to have to hide!

Couple of cons: Don't hold this phone between the head and shoulder - you may actually accidentally hang up on the party at the other end - I have done this numerous times (guess that's what the headset is for!). Also, the 'end' button, which is used to hang up or end a (programming) process, is miniscule (even by my standards, and I have small hands). It should have been designed larger, or the talk button should be a toggle button, as with most cordless phone systems. People who are used to the toggle systems for answering and hanging up may try that a few times with this phone only to come back to it later and realize that the phone is off the hook.

A very good phone.......2003-10-18

The most I like about this phone are the sound clarity, ease of use, and size. While talking from a good distance from the receiver, I've had not problem with sound. The only think I get is good quality sound. I don't miss anything what other people say.

Two things I dislike about this phone are the end botton, and the words on or below bottons. First, the end botton is fairly small. If you miss pressing it after you've done talking, which I have done several times, the phone will continue to be on and no one else can call you. So, very careful with this button. The words fade very rapidly if your not careful. I had my phone for 9 months now, and almost all the words are erased. This is all from normal usage.

Great Phone/Answering Machine.......2003-01-29

At first, I was disappointed, until I realized that I had plugged it into the DSL outlet. When I finally hooked it up correctly, it worked great. The digital answering machine sounds clear. The phone sounds great from anywhere in the house. Haven't tested it outside yet (too cold). I've been updating the built-in phone book through the caller-id function...very convenient (don't have to type everyone's name and phone number in). Good stuff. I also like setting different rings for various people in the built-in phone book. Locals I have set for one ring, long distance set for another.

Not what you think!.......2003-01-21

I just bought a different brand name and it was not worth it. You can hear yourself talking back into the phone and it has static. I will not pay that kind of money for a digital phone. I just read in the sunday paper that digital phones are not worth it and have alot of problems! I returned that phone and will stick with the phone I have!

Not a good buy.......2003-01-20

Wife hates it..we have had trouble with signal breaking up and static on transmission. Contacted Uniden repair and they said to move to new location..easy said but not convenient to us.

Micro Wave seems to drive it nuts. I guess it would work fine if used in the front yard.

Good player........2007-01-05

Got this as a gift for my Girl Friend. She is very pleased with it. She has had it for about 18 months now, uses it every day, and it works as well as the day she got it.

While I wasn't ecstatic about receiving an iRiver (I wanted an Ipod), once I started using it I really loved it. It works well with Windows media player, I didn't have to download any software and moving around the menu is extremely easy. I didn't have the charging and battery problems everyone else had, but maybe that's because I read the manual. You don't have to connect to the computer to charge it; you need only connect the mp3 side of the usb cable to your player and THEN connect the ac adapter to player/wall. The only thing I needed to do to my player was update the firmware, which was easy if you can follow directions. Songs aren't always played in order (kind of annoying), but not so much that it ruined my experience with the player. SMART and AFFORDABLE BUY!

I am actually on my 3rd H10 having had to receive 2 RMA numbers from iRiver. The number of issues I have w/ this thing is difficult to even tally up. Generally I wouldn't bother writing a reveiw; however, this morning I find myself having to wipe the piece of cr*p clean for the 30th time and re-syncing several thousand songs once again. I'm not even going to bother. I'm just going to go buy a new mp3 player and be done w/ it. If you buy one of these things after reading this then I can only assume you are a masochist.

But now its gone bad!! Iriver support is not responding. I can't down load the updater to my H10,it won't reformat, and emails are getting me nowhere. Worst yet I miss my music. Like a relationship gone bad, it was great while it lasted, but the end was really sour.

Don't waste your money. What iRiver doesn't tell their customers is that once the battery goes dead, the system is useless. I will never buy one of their products again and I'm doing my best to inform everyone out there that they'll be tossing their money in the trash by purchasing any iRiver products. My system cost me $[...] and it is now as useless as the customer service department at iRiver
