Amazon.com Review

Research in Motion's BlackBerry wireless handheld has been one of the most talked-about handhelds on the market recently--and the press coverage it received due to it being the communication gadgets of choice for Al Gore's presidential campaign certainly didn't hurt. But thanks to its full-function organizer, synchronization with many popular desktop PIMs (personal information managers), thumb-operated QWERTY keyboard, and, of course, wireless e-mail, the RIM 957 BlackBerry is more than just hype.

You won't receive instant wireless gratification right out of the box--you'll need to juice up the internal rechargeable battery via the docking cradle (AC adapter included). Also, the activation process requires you to first register online and wait three to five business days for a confirmation e-mail.

The biggest challenges we faced, thanks to years of Palm usage, were the keyboard and the trackwheel controller. There's no need for a stylus with the RIM 957--all text input is performed using the minikeyboard. At first we were all thumbs, but we got the hang of it after a day's usage and could type away--even hitting the ALT keys (which cover numbers and symbols)--like a pro. And for longer e-mail messages, the RIM 957 is certainly easier and quicker than writing Graffiti characters with the Palm stylus.

And instead of tapping screen icons to access functions or scroll through a screen (the RIM 957's screen is not touch sensitive), you use the trackwheel on the right side of the device. Just roll to a desired item and press it in to select it; this is also how you access menu items when in a list, such as the address book. To return to the previous screen (or get out of the menu), simply press the Escape key below the trackwheel.

We easily synchronized the device with our Outlook contacts, to-do lists, and calendar. The RIM 957's desktop software includes Intellisync, which can synchronize the device with Microsoft Outlook and Schedule+, GroupWise, Lotus Organizer and Notes, Symantec ACT!, Goldmine, and Netscape.

Once out on the road, e-mailing was a breeze--we maximized our time by sending messages back to our office from New York taxis and while waiting for a delayed flight. With the device on, e-mail was received automatically, and we were notified with a simple tone. You can also set the device to vibrate, which is helpful when the RIM 957 is stored in the included belt-clip case.

The RIM 957 does have some shortcomings. There's no Web browsing, and you won't be able to use applications developed for the Palm OS, the predominant handheld platform. Also, you will have to work with your company's system administrator or your ISP to receive messages from your company or other e-mail account. Finally, if you are in a rural area, you might not get any connection, as the monthly wireless service (provided through Aether Systems) is primarily focused on larger metropolitan areas.

That said, if you're a modern-day road warrior who needs to be connected to e-mail at all times, the RIM 957 offers all the tools of a personal organizer without the hassle of having to jack into a modem or cell phone to get online. --Agen Schmitz

Amazon.com Product Description

The RIM 957 Blackberry Internet Edition Wireless Handheld offers a complete wireless e-mail and personal organizer solution for the mobile professional. Compose e-mail messages using the built-in keyboard, then send and receive e-mail via the embedded wireless modem. Integrate e-mail sent from the RIM handheld device with your primary desktop e-mail account. The RIM 957 also comes with a full-featured organizer, allowing you to keep track of your contacts, schedule, and to-do lists. You can then synchronize this data with such desktop PIMs as Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Organizer and Notes, Symantec ACT!, and GroupWise.

About the size of a Palm device, the RIM 957's screen has a sharp LCD screen with 15 to 19 lines of viewable text. The main menu features intuitive icons and menus that are accessed with a thumb-operated trackwheel. The device has 5 MB of flash memory (plus 512 KB SRAM) and operates on a 32-bit Intel386 processor. It runs on an internal lithium-ion battery that recharges through the docking cradle.

The RIM 957 Blackberry comes with a docking cradle, a belt-clip slipcase, Blackberry Desktop Manager software, and a Blackberry installation and user's guide.

Important note to customers: The RIM 957 Blackberry Wireless Handheld requires a $39.95 monthly wireless service through Aether Systems. An activation guide with details is included in the box. Should you have questions or need assistance regarding service details, contact Aether Systems by email at moreinfo@myaetherbb.com or by phone at 866-815-2701.

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy this product until you read this!.......2003-05-08

I have the Blackberry RIM 957 model. I use it to check email. Simple enough. It's been invaluable to me.

But there's another side to this product that you need to know before making a purchase. A product is only as good as its technical support. And this product fails miserably in that category. You have to pay for common technical support either on a pay-per-incident basis or by purchasing a support plan. I had one simple problem with my Blackberry that turned out to be a problem with the existing software (not an end-user issue) and it cost me a small fortune to have the problem fixed.

They not only charge you for support, they also charge you for upgrades. Sounds like Microsoft has a hand in their support functions, doesn't it?

That being said, I don't know what I'd do without this product. I take it everywhere with me and it's alot better than a laptop. Just keep the technical support issue in mind when making a purchase because once you leave the store, you're on your own.

5 out of 5 stars RIM 957 Blackberry.......2003-03-09

It's a great asset for getting email. It sometimes gets the message before my telephone lines deliver to my laptop.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully enabling piece of technology!.......2002-04-14

I like to refer to devices that help people to communicate with each other as 'enabling' devices. The Blackberry is one such device and it does a great job at it. It's worth it's weight in gold and then some!

The RIM 957 just works well, period. It does what it's supposed to and does it well. And it doesn't try to do everything. For instance, it's not really a good subsitute for a PDA. It's address book is more useful to store emails and the calendar does not compare to Palm's. I had previously tried the Palm i705 and had a terrible time with it, despite the fact that it includes other non wireless PDA functionality. The Palm service coverage kept dropping out and it was not reliable. The Blackberry on the other hand is wonderfully reliable and proven. It has a better screen than the i705, and has a built-in small QWERTY keyboard that is a joy to use. It's quick to type on and all functions are very user intuitive-a great design.

It's difficult to put a monetary value on something that enables me to be in email contact all the time wherever I am. The unit is like a pager and stays on all the time and I can read and write emails with ease. I also opted for the web browsing option through my service provider and although it can really only browse WML (WAP) websites, the screen holds a lot of text and it is quite useful for both emailing and browsing.

The way the Blackberry service works, is that you forward your home email to your Blackberry email address. Most ISPs support this, and you can even opt to also have the emails left on your ISPs server so that they are also downloaded to your home computer. When you use the Blackberry to send or respond to an email, it is setup so that emails come from your home email address. In this way, people do not even know that I am using a wireless device to send them email!

Now I don't have to be tied to my home or office computer to be in contact. In fact, I find myself not turning on my home computer as much. It's really cool to be able to do email without a computer.

I got mine through Earthlink, ... Granted, the device is a bit expensive but more so is the service. To me it's totally worth it and is still less then my monthly cable TV bill, yet is so much more useful!

4 out of 5 stars Blackberry compared to Palm Pilot.......2002-02-24

Love the wireless email functions on the Blackberry, but the PDA functions come up short. The main problem is that you can only search on messages, not on calendar/appointments, or memos or tasks. Thus, if you know you have a meeting but don't know when it is, you can't find it.

Also, if you're synching with Lotus Notes, you'll notice that the location of the meeting and who you are meeting with are not captured by the Blackberry, which is kind of a pain.

As soon as the Blackberry gets the PDA stuff down (and adds the wireless phone which shouldn't be too difficult), they'll be the best on the market at the size (thin) they are. I haven't tried the Palm 705 or something (wireless email), but am told that it doesn't compare on the email side.

5 out of 5 stars No regrets.......2001-10-20

this puppy is worth every penny. i'm never tied to my office anymore and travelling is laptop free now. 98% reliable for sending messages but you know if it didn't go through so the risk factor is nada.

You bought a digital satellite system not only for the variety of channels it promises, but also for the high definition picture and CD-quality digital sound it delivers. However, if you use inferior cable, you won't get all the performance you paid for. Ordinary S-video cables often use inferior construction which causes signal degradation. The result is poor reproduction of video source material, a fuzzy picture, and inaccurate color rendition. Standard coaxial or conventional audio cables often distort sound and restrict dynamic range.Monster's Satellite Kit features advanced Monster Super Video 2 cable. 2 out of 5 stars Decent price - not so decent product.......2007-02-08

After shopping around for a standard phone with callerID and no answering machine (no power outlet nearby), I came across this phone that had good ratings and was reasonably priced.
I like the look and feel of the phone. The buttons are big enough and the speakerphone works good.
However, when the unit is wall mounted, the LCD display is angled down, and is hard to see unless you crouch down to look at it. Of course, that depends on how high your phone jack is, and how tall you are. I bought two of these phones and both locations I put them were too low to see without crouching down.
The other problem is that three out of our four family members complained that they could not hear the caller very well. I don't know if plugging the unit into a power jack would have made any difference. I could not try that because the unit did not come with an AC adapter, plus I have no power outlet close enough to reach.
So, I had to take both phones down, and put our 15 year old ones back up.

2 out of 5 stars Good Phone, Lousy Customer Support.......2007-01-16

I actually like the phone quite a bit. It works pretty well in almost every regard. Sound quality is very good, buttons are easy to find and use, and the feature set is pretty good. Overall, a nice phone and a good value.

However, this item is advertised as having 20 number memory, which is 10 "one touch" and 10 "two touch". I have not been able to get the two touch feature to work.

I tried calling the customer support number. I could never get an answer. I was always put on a queue, waited for a couple of minutes, and then offered a voicemail option or dropping the call. I left messages, and never got a call back. I (twice) tried recalling immediately after getting booted. I tried for an hour. No joy. Don't buy Northwestern Bell Phones unless you are sure nothing will ever go wrong.

This is a real lemon. The volume does not work properly and distorts the sound. The touchtone keys stick even though I have had this phone less than 6 months. I would like my money back.

2 out of 5 stars Caller ID Stopped Working on Day 3.......2006-10-18

Love this phone.....if only the Caller ID would work! It worked fine on day 1, day 2 worked on and off.....day 3 Caller ID not working. Tried moving the phone to different outlets, removing the batteries & putting them back in, tried new wire etc.... The phone works great otherwise. Loved the Caller ID when it was working--much larger than most and easy to read. Oh well!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you want in a corded phone!.......2006-10-15

Corded phones with features are becoming harder to find now-a-days. My home needed one corded phone for sure fire communications during power outages, mobile phone down for whatever reason, etc. This is one of the few corded phones with caller ID and no answering machine built in. The greatest feature of this phone is it has a HOLD button so one can place a call on hold while one gets high tech cordless, etc. Also with the built in speaker phone this phone is great in the kitchen. Highly recommend this for your one corded phone in the house!

I really like this caller ID unit. I didn't give it 5 stars because of it's large bulky size and for the fact that it states speakerphone but is not. It does pick up an outside line, dial the number listed on the ID then you are prompted to pick up your receiver. It is easy to use and easy to read.

Metrobility's "redundant twister" interface provides redundant data paths for path protection and restoration. An essential connectivity tool for high priority and mission-critical applications, it provides fully redundant data paths as well as power supply redundancy, for Ethernet, Fast Ethernet or Gigabit devices. If the primary connection fails due to a cable or hardware failure, the "redundant twister" interface switches the device's traffic to the secondary connections within 200 microseconds.Intelligent "redundant twister" models also deliver Managed Network-on-Demand capability for mission-critical applications. Managed Network-on-Demand allows the "redundant twister" media converter to be configured to operate in either Dynamic Recovery Mode (DRM) to ensure session integrity and increase uptime, or in Network Select Mode (NSM) to redirect traffic and add security through link isolation. And with SONAR, or Switch on No Activity Received, the interface not only monitors for loss of link on the active port, but will also monitor for traffic. With SONAR, if the active port remains idle for a given amount of time (configurable for 1-31 seconds) the resilient technology of the redundant interface will verify activity on the secondary port, and switch traffic to that port once traffic is detected. This prevents a switch or switch port failure from bringing down the network or any part of it.

The heart of DLP technology is a micro-display panel no larger than a postage stamp, which integrates 921,600 microscopic mirrors to deliver eye-popping, high-definition detail, color, and clarity. Samsung applies the magic of DLP technology to your home theater via its patented, compact optical engine that replaces the large, heavy picture tubes found in direct-view sets. Best of all, Samsung DLP projection TVs are lighter, more affordable, and use far less power than plasma TVs. Now you can enjoy the spine-tingling thrills of digital television in a sleek, tabletop design that's significantly smaller, lighter, and brighter than a conventional projection TV. Samsung's advanced convergence technologies also make DLP projection TVs compatible with your HDTV tuner, PC, DVD, game console, VCR, camcorder, digital camera, and much more.

          Samsung optical engine
Samsung's patented optical engine ensures maximum brightness, flicker-free video, detailed text, and still images, and a full 160-degree viewing angle. DLP micro-display technology and Samsung's proprietary Bent Light Lens System give you a big-screen TV without the big-screen hassle. Its ultra-slim, ultra-lightweight design lets you put it virtually anywhere. And its optical engine is durable, long-lasting, and never needs calibrating.

          Digital perfection
DLP technology is the only display solution that enables projection systems to create a purely digital connection between a digital video or graphic source and the screen in front of you. The surface of the DLP panel is covered with almost a million micro-mirrors (1280 x 720) that act as pixels. This incredibly high pixel count creates a striking, digital image with seamless resolution, amazing detail, and brilliant, lifelike colors. And because the pixels are less than one micron apart, you won't notice the "screen door" effect apparent with other TVs.

          Ultra-smooth action
Samsung's DLP micro-mirrors can switch on and off over 5,000 times a second--that's up to 10 times faster than other micro-displays. This allows DLP Projection TV to smoothly and accurately display fast-switching content like HDTV and DVD.

          Brighter and clearer
At 400 cd/m2, DLP outshines other micro-display technologies for a bright, clear picture, with incredible contrast and color accuracy. Its unique optical engine preserves the intensity of the original image with vibrant colors and rich, deep blacks. Its high, 1000:1 contrast ratio makes for ideal color separation and crisp, detailed images. That's why Samsung's DLP projection TV is perfect for any source material that demands minute detail, such as HDTV, computer images, and DVDs.

          Consistent screen image
The DLP projection TV is much more durable than competing technologies because the display doesn't physically age or deteriorate. Its ultra-high-pressure lamp delivers consistent light output and picture quality throughout its long lifespan.

Cinema progressive scan and 3:2 pulldown
The cinema progressive scan enhancement automatically upconverts all nondigital signals to a smooth, clear 720 lines of progressive scan. The 3:2 pulldown feature is a must for any movie enthusiast. It analyzes each frame of video, removing unclear frames that were added during the transfer from film to video. These added frames cause blurring, stuttering, and other motion artifacts, especially during fast-action sequences. 3:2 pulldown eliminates them and gives your DVDs a look and feel that's much closer to film. Cinema progressive scan with 3:2 pulldown is powered by Faroudja's patented DCDi video processing on Samsung DLP projection TVs.

          1280 x 720 progressive display quality
Samsung delivers flicker-free, static images, thanks to its all-format conversion system. Progressive scan is a must for rock-steady text, still images, and smooth action sequences.

          Wide viewing angle
Left side, right side, or upside-down--whatever your location, Samsung DLP projection TVs allow you to see any display clearly, thanks to its 160-degree-wide viewing angle. Unlike traditional projection TVs, the image doesn't get darker as you move away from the center.

          What's in the Box
TV, remote control, two AAA batteries, and user's manual.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE SAMSUNG DLP DESIGN FLAWS!!!.......2007-03-30

Consumers should be aware of serious design flaws which exist in Samsung DLP televisions. Cooling fans and color wheels are highly susceptible to failing. (As a non-techniocal person I should have no idea what these parts are, but alas, I bought a Samsung DLP) Expect these to fail within 1-2 years. Expect to pay approx $400 to replace the color wheel and $200 to replace the colling fan. That is, if your service technician can find them in stock anywhere. These parts are commonly in a national backorder because of the very high failure rates.

You should also expect the lamp to fail sooner than advertized. Many people need to purchase a new lamp between 1-2 years, and some more often than that. The lamp costs approx $150-$250 depending on your model, but you should be able to replace it yourself without too much difficulty. This cost will be in addition to replacement costs for the color wheel and colling fan. Please remember that these maintenance costs are recurring, and you will have to fix them again in another 1-2 years.

While I was very satisfied with the quality and performance of my DLP, my color wheel failed very early. I called tech support to report a grinding noise, and was told to "turn it off", wait 15 minutes, and turn it back on like this would fix the problem. After doing this for a while, the color wheel finally failed, actually shattered! Now I am out of warranty, and Samsung wants nothing to do with me. I have even tried ordering the part myself from two different online vendors, and they are both backordered indefinitely! It has been 6 weeks and they have no estimate for when this part will be available. Samsung cannot even give me an estimate when the supply of replacement parts is expected to meet demand. I have had my TV for 18 months, and apparently there is a national epidemic of them breaking at the same time!

I have a 42" Samsung Plasma which is a beautiful set along with a 26" CRT. Both are wonderful products, but Samsung is selling DLP LEMONS and will not stand behind them. DLP is a great bargain up front, but a maintenance NIGHTMARE! You will pay in the long run, and by the long run I mean every 2 years. If you still want to purchase a DLP television, PLEASE BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY! IT WILL SAVE YOU A TON, BUT YOU WILL STILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE CIRCUIT CITY TECH TO FIND PARTS WHICH MAY TAKE MONTHS!

I expect Samsung to abandon their design flaw riddled DLP sector, and focus on their beautiful plasma line. Expect DLP prices to drop even further, but please...LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP!

1 out of 5 stars color wheel problems.......2007-02-02

These tvs look great but are seriously defective. You can count on the TV breaking within 3-4 years. The color wheels will break and it's an expensive repair > $500. The lamp will also go in a couple of years for another repair.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality compared to other products.......2004-09-20

One of the first DLP-based RPTV's to hit the market this side of teh Pacific Ocean, this TV feels like a beta (or alpha) product. Picture quality is sub-par compared to DLP TVs from Sony and Panasonic, and those brands (surprise!) cost even less. Given the many better choices available, I don't see why anyone would buy this one.

1 out of 5 stars Not yet ready for Prime Time.......2004-09-15

I've owned this unit for 6 months, and already have 2 problems (which have yet to be resolved).
My unit developed a stripe on one edge of the picture area, when playing 3:4 aspect images, broadcast or video. It does not appear in wide-screen mode.
And then - after only 6 months - the unit started SQUEALING like a high-pitched CHAINSAW at boot-up, and later randomly during use.
Complaint aside, the image quality - from DVD, widescreen - is really great. And the sound from the set itself is far better than most. But it can't be enjoyed when the unit is trash otherwise.
          Other things to consider:
The construction of the unit is all plastic and feals flimsy.
The remote is slow to respond to channel changes.
The vertical viewing range is limited. (The horizontal is ok.)
My $300 normal TV worked for 10 years without a problem. Now, for $3000, I get only 6 months. Ridiculous!
And I've called the service department 3 times without any real person ever picking up the phone!
I believe the product was released before its time.
If you're considering purchase this, I would wait. There are other technologies that look better. Or get a DLP after the bugs are worked out. And you may want to select a company with actual service and support to back them up.

          1 out of 5 stars NO SERVICE.......2004-09-10

Don't expect any service from a third rated company.
If you are buying a big ticket item or an expensive item, don't go with Samsung.
They will not help you when it breaks down even when it's under the warranty.
They will delay it until the warranty is over.

Color changing brick of light From Mathmos (the company that created the original Lava lamp back in 1967) comes the Color Tumbler. This is a very intriguing light that can illuminate in any one of 9 colors, which change depending on the orientation of the light. Since the Tumbler is in the shape of a brick, and correspondingly only has 6 sides, the 9 colors may seem illogical. However, it cycles through different colors for each side. The Tumbler is made with high-quality materials. The outer brick housing is made of thick glass that has been "frosted" on the inside to provide a nice glow. It also features a built-in rechargeable battery with AC plug adaptor (120V) and can be used indoor or outdoors. The battery will last 3-6 hours on a full charge. 5 out of 5 stars great product.......2005-12-20

This is a great product, easy installation, fast and stable. Performance certainly beats wireless. Netgear has a new powerline wall-plugged adaptor XE102 that is smaller, but is under recall because it could cause fire. XA601 is well designed for desktop placement, I used it for 2 years never see it got overheated.

2 out of 5 stars Beware the XA601!.......2005-03-04

I have tried Powerline products from various manufacturers, including the Belkin F5D4050 USB Adapter (don't bother, it's garbage), GigaFast PE902 Powerline Ethernet Bridge, the Netgear XE602 Ethernet bridge, the Netgear XA601 USB Adpater, and the Linksys PLUSB10 USB Adapter.

What can I say about the XA601? It is cheap (you can get one from eBay for $12 shipped) and when it works it works great.

The problem I have with the XA601 is when the unit is plugged into the electrical outlet for more than 24 hours the LAN connectivity stops. The only way to fix this is by unplugging the power cord, waiting a few minutes, and plugging it in again.

Maybe the XA601 has a problem with overheating - I don't know. I emailed their Tech Support over a week ago and so far, no response.

If you're looking for a Powerline USB Adpater I suggest the Linksys PLUSB10. The unit I have has been working flawlessly for over 2 months. But they are expensive and hard to find.

            5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2004-01-24

I have been using Netgear Powerline in my house for almost 10 months some of that time with 4 computers. Have "horse hair plaster walls" and many doors. No problem with using the product and not worried about security issues like with wireless

5 out of 5 stars Easy, reliable networking for the network novice.......2003-10-24

Both my wife and I work from home two days per week, and we both need high speed Internet access to be our most productive. We created a network in a previous house by purchasing a router and running a cable between two office areas. Now we were in a new home and needed to setup our network again, and running a cable would have been a major construction project. What to do?

We immediately thought of a wireless network. But, as we did our research, we saw repeated reports of the network "dropping off" unexpectedly. Neither of us liked the idea of being in the middle of a discussion with a co-worker, boss, or client while looking at information online and having that information disappear. We wanted reliability and simplicty.

The answer? Powerline networking. New technology had overcome some of the earlier electrical interference problems with powerline networking. We already had a Netgear router from our previous home network that had worked flawlessly for several years. So we purchased the Netgear powerline adapter.

The setup couldn't be much easier: connect the adapter to the router with a standard supplied network cable and plug it in; in the second work location plug in a second adapter, and connect it to your second computer, in our case, my work-supplied laptop.

We've been using this product for 18 months without any problems. On rare occasions my laptop won't "find" the connection. If I unplug the adapter for a minute or two and plug it in again, I'm re-connected. My connection has never dropped off once I'm connected.

The powerline solution isn't quite as "elegant" as a wireless network; you do have to be plugged in to a power outlet, so you don't have the same mobility that you get with wireless. But if you're a serious teleworker, you probably have a work space established, and papers spread out around you anyway. You need to be "at work" not roaming around the yard with your laptop. And if your going to be at work for 8 to 10 hours your laptop will also need to be plugged into an outlet.

If you're looking for a reliable, easy to setup home network system, I highly recommend this Netgear product.

This is very easy to setup. Install the included CD driver, plug the unit into your computer's USB port. The other end goes into your power plug. Get two XA601s and do the same for the other computer. And voila, you have a network connection. Its perfect if you use your main computer is the Internet gateway or you just want to play games or trade files between each computer. If your "other" device is a router, then get one XA601 and an XE602, which is the Ethernet port version of the XA601. Its vey clean, convenient, and no messy cables to deal with.
