1 out of 5 stars Proof that low price does not mean good value.......2003-04-15

An unfortunately case of stylish monitor is no better than its vanity looks. Seven dead pixels on arrival, unresponsive controls, washed out colors (and no black!), and an general feeling of cheapness. Definitely stay away if you make a living as a graphic artist.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewing 171v so be patient.......2003-01-07

I purchased a model that is very similar to this one....it's the 171v. I'm new to flat screen LCD monitors so I'm not into all of the techno-hype. I just know I love this monitor! The clarity is unreal. It replaced a "regular" 17" monitor and it's very nice how true the measurements are when you switch to this type of monitor. I can't tell you how easy it is to use while adjusting, but I can say it was easy to install. I just plugged it in.

One note...change the size of your display to make it clearer. When it's as large as it was during the "default" stage, it was blurry and I was concerned. That simple adjustment made my swimming fish a bit more clear.

5 out of 5 stars Samsung SyncMaster 171S 17" LCD Monitor.......2003-01-05

I work all day in front of my PC, mainly web surfing, XL and Word to write books and reports. It is especially important when I work that I can see two pages "side by side" and "read" as if using sheet paper. I am not a games player.

I noticed with my classic CRT monitor that
1/ my eyes were itching and watering
2/ I was "hunching forward" to read and getting a stiff neck
3/ I was getting frequent headaches.

The Samsung solved all these problems. I can now work all day without discomfort or itchy eyes. It is also helpful when manipulating several windows (XL and word, or word and a photo editor). Not to mention the reclaimed real estate on my desk. Pricewise, it's the best for my needs as I don't need bells and whistles.

If you are a home office worker, this is the monitor for you!

3 out of 5 stars nice monitor, but flickers and screen colors fade.......2002-10-18

I got this monitor and after a few days i noticed the colors fade sometimes, almost how my old 15 inch crt monitor used to flicker. is this normal?
other than that the monitor is very easy to use and sets up well and has a nice picture. I have never had a lcd monitor before so I am not sure if this fading of the colors is normal or not. I tried to return it on Amazon and it told me that their system is down right now for this service.
If all lcd's are like this I might just return this and get a 15 inch lcd since they are twice as inexpensive.

5 out of 5 stars good LCD choice........2002-10-03

The quality is pretty good, slim design. looks no difference with 171B, the contrast rate is a bit lower for a 17 LCD but the text and figure looks clear and sharp enough. The best thing is the price. At this price this one is really a good deal.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Monitor.......2002-08-03

This monitor worth every penny. The color is natual and clear. Samsung has included a natural color software to adjust it so it will be compatible with your printer. The text is crisp and clean. Setup is fairly easy. Plug in the power and the analoug cable and you are ready to go. It is a kind of hard to adjust this monitor manually. Thanks to the auto adjust button, it will do the work for you. The monitor also comes with a three year limited warranty. The only problem with this monitor is that its manual is too simple. So, if you have any problem with setup, you are out of luck.

Overall, this is a very good monitor and I recommand it to everyone. It will be many years before I buy another monitor.

      Product Description

Netgear WG511 802.11g Wireless PC Card - When using the Internet, you have the ability to freely roam websites with ease. However, accessing this vast network of information is still a wire-based affair. You must be at a fixed location, tethered to the wall, like a dog on a leash. Now with 802.11 wireless technology, that connection has been severed, allowing you to wirelessly access both the Internet, and other computers wherever you choose. This 802.11g PC Card fits into your laptop's PCMCIA slot, allowing it to connect to any 802.11g, or 802.11b wireless access point within range.

      Amazon.com Product Description

Netgear's 54 Mbps Wireless PC Card offers speeds up to nearly five times faster than widely deployed IEEE 802.11b wireless networks found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the globe. It works with devices that are compatible with both the 802.11b and 802.11g draft wireless standards to keep you connected today and tomorrow.

Put it in your notebook PC and no matter where you are, at home, at the office, at the airport or in other public access areas, this versatile adapter automatically selects the best connection available, giving you constant access to corporate resources, e-mail, and the Internet. Use it to quickly network employees, saving the time and expense of Ethernet cabling. Easy to set up and use with Netgear's Install Wizard, the PC Card auto-selects the best available connection and adapts the settings to match. And with up to 128-bit WEP encryption, you can rest assured that your wireless network communications are private.

Fully IEEE 802.11b (2.4 GHz) compliant for wireless network access from your notebook PC, this PC Card has both standards built in, so you can connect your notebook to existing 802.11b infrastructure, and also to the high-speed networks based on the 802.11g specification. Dynamic rate shifting according to environmental conditions achieves the fastest possible connections.

The Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless PC Card supports office roaming for notebook PC users for shared broadband Internet access and resources, and provides maximum mobility from home, the office, the airport, and other public access areas. And the Netgear Wireless LAN Manager lets you create profiles that reflect specific WLAN settings for each place you travel.

The PC Card comes with a 3-year warranty and it compatible with Windows 98, Me, 2000, or XP.

4 out of 5 stars More Than What You Pay For!.......2007-07-06

Works great right out of the box for me. Set up done and the card was working in a couple of minutes. Range is so so but this is a very functional unit. If you need a wireless card for your laptop and don't have much cash then get one.

5 out of 5 stars Works better than most others.......2007-06-03

I've learned a while back that the wireless connection is more temperamental then wired and the signal a lot weaker and more prone to interruptions. This pretty much is a fact regardless of which adapter you put in and the difference between a B and G is almost unnoticeable. The netgear is one of a few that is backward compatible with older operating systems. I use it on an older Sony laptop running WIN 98 and the connection is good most of the times. Hard to beat it for the price.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Wireless.......2007-05-30

If you own the Netgear router for this card so that your network supports MIMO then you are going to love this card. I had some issues with the software until I realized that I needed to bypass the setup CD and get the drivers on the internet to resolve many issues. After I got it up and running then I've been gettin 108Mps through out the house on both floors and every corner. I was using a linksys before, but the MIMO seems to be the place to be until they get the "N" technology out in the market full force.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Service.......2007-05-07

I really like the fast, prompt, and couteous Service that I recieved.

1 out of 5 stars Superpen satisfaction review.......2007-09-08

The product seams good but instructions on user manual are incomplete and technical support in WizCom Technologies (supplier) has been terrible, now I know why are so many used products of this on sale. I do not recommend the product.

5 out of 5 stars Great dictionary tool on the run.......2007-08-28

After I got used to how the scanning works, I've found the dictionary pen to be very useful. More convenient than carrying a dictionary around when I know your reading material will require me to look up some of the words.

5 out of 5 stars Saves a lot of time from typing!.......2007-08-22

I really find this product very useful and time-saving. I read a lot and always highlight important passages in my books. The process of going back and typing all the highlighted passages was very tedious and time consuming.

With the Superpen, scanning the passages is now a breeze. However, one must get used to it first. For example, there is a certain way to hold the pen (a certain angle) and certain speed to scan your text. If you do it right, you might get a 100% correct output. However, if you do it wrong, you might get an output as low as 30% of the intended result. Take time and experiment and in no time you'll find yourself an expert at scanning text with this device.

One problem I found in the beginning was the synchronization process between this device and my computer. The pen just couldn't synchronize with my computer, and I spent hours going through the support web pages and installing and re-installing the software a couple of times. At the end, the problem turned out to be the USB cable not fully snapped inside the SuperPen. Make sure you hear the snap when you insert the front end of the USB cable into the SuperPen. This can easily be overlooked as the cable will seem to be snuggly inserted into the device.

If you need for any reason to change the properties of your USB driver to hardware flow, do the following in Windows XP:

Start / control panel / system / hardware / device manager

When you are at the device `manager screen' click on the `+' sign next to `Ports (COM & LPT)'. Make sure your USB cable is plugged into your computer. Then right-click on `Prolific USB-to-serial COMM port', and click on properties. Go to the `Port settings' tab, and in the `flow control' menu, select hardware.

If you often take notes and find it time consuming to type the passages you highlighted, this pen will be a required item that you won't be able to live without.

This pen also has other features such as reading a word aloud (it even comes with headphones), and giving you a definition of any word you scan. You can also scan passages in different languages, such as French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish.

I really recommend this product, but keep in mind that you have to be patient at first and be willing to spend time learning how to use this product. Once this is done, you won't believe how you ever lived without it!

This Wizcom SuperPen Professional is bogus. I tried to scan this sentence "Constant rededication is more important than the initial..." and this is the output:

"Constnnt rc~eelicntion Is -vore irnl)ortntlt tl) nn talc lnit~n"

I gave it another chance and scanned this sentence,"Thinking alone these lines, the student should become far more serious..." into the pen and the pen spit this out:

"'along tilde lincs, lh~ student siloalcl bcl~me inr ml1re"

Do not buy this pen. This pen is a failure and not to mention the clunky software.

          5 out of 5 stars What a great tool!.......2007-05-12

Can't imagine how i survived without this. Really saves time. So easy to use. Almost as fast as typing and a heck of a lot easier.

My son was cataloging his sheet music and trying to add entries into an access database from the sheet music. Small errors were noticed in almost every entry which made manual entry faster than editing the mistakes. I am sure it has its place but not for this application.

4 out of 5 stars Works Fine For My Needs.......2007-03-28

I was concerned about the mixed reviews of this product, but considering this scanner was so inexpensive I decided to try it myself. An instruction manual and quick start guide is included, but for more thorough instructions check the Documentation folder on the CD. After following the directions, I could not get the device to communicate with my computer. The documentation and website advise trying to change the Baud Rate on the device and on the PC, but that still didn't help. I finally got the connection to work after changing the COM Port number in the Advanced settings in Device Manager. For some reason the device is not a normal USB device, but can be found under Ports(Com&LPT) - Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port on Windows XP.
Anyway, I now use the device to highlight key passages in my everyday reading, which are typically only one or two sentences long at a time and from both magazines and books. I have good success with this device, but have not tried the optional image scanner or the infrared capability. I have no experience with any other pen scanner, but this is the most inexpensive one I found and includes USB connectivity and works great for casual highlighting. Once you get the connection working, and beyond the fact that this device is an ugly red, this is a good product to have. The only issue I have with it now is that I wish it was a little smaller, especially since I don't have the need for the big display to see what I just scanned.

I saw, ordered, tried it, and returned it. I'd say more, but the product isn't worth it.

After two weeks and several conversations with tech support, I could not get the pen to write to my computer (Word), though the internal test showed communication. I returned it to the mfg. Got it back with no info as to what they discovered. Tested or no? Repaired or no?
So I tried it and it now does write to computer, though with little accuracy. The problem is, with no comunitcation from their Customer Support, I don't know if it works due to repair or because I upgraded from 1 gig to 2 gigs of ram. Oh well, one can't get it right every time.

As a branch office or mid-size host security gateway, the NetVanta 2300 provides several key security features such as IPSec VPN tunneling with DES or 3DES encryption, careful inspection firewall, and IKE for user authentication supporting public/private keys or digital certificates. In addition, it also offers a DMZ port for public server access, a hardware encryption accelerator for faster encryption throughput and up to 100 simultaneous VPN tunnels.

1 out of 5 stars Other products are cheaper & better.......2004-11-19

This is a similar product to the NetVanta 2050 so the same warnings about endless upgrades adding to price and problems with the claims of the sales lit. vs. reality also apply.

We chose the AdTran NetVanta 2050 because we were looking for a dedicated router/bridge that would act as a firewall and provide IPvSec VPN access to our Windows network from the Internet. First off, it can't work as a bridge, it's only a router.

Secondly, the information on the AdTran Web site is at best misleading, or completely lacking, in such a way as to be misleading. For example, nowhere did it state that the unit does NOT come with VPN support, but that you need to purchase that separately, at about $170. This gets you a serial number which lets you download the "enhanced" firmware from their confusing Web site. So while the $260 price looked attractive, we ended up spending $430 to get firewall & VPN capabilities, and there's a lot of products out there that will do both out of the box for 1/3 or less the price.

Even if you decide to get the VPN capabilities, you'll then need to buy a separate AdTran Windows VPN client at $125 per 5 users, because it won't work with the VPN facilities built into Windows. And that client will just get packets between your remote PC and internal network, it doesn't help you autheticate to a Windows domain, making it difficult for anyone but a Power User to access Windows-based resources.

If you're willing to spend that much to buy two units to create a IPvSec VPN tunnel from one office location to another, this product would be fine, but again, there's better/cheaper products which will do same. But be warned that it only provides routing, not bridging, so if you're in a Windows environment, all it will do is share packets between two separate sites; you're stuck figuring out how to authenticate against separate Windows domains to access resources.

As a firewall, it doesn't offer any features beyond what other, less-expensive routers offer. As a VPN remote-access unit, it's useless compared to a number of Linksys and Cisco products designed to do that. And after reading tech/sales claims as to what it can do, only to keep finding out you need to keep purchasing add-ons to get that functionality is insulting and unethical.

            Strengths:

Not many. The Web-based configuration support is good, but no better than competitors' products. Its price is not competitive nor does it offer the functionality that's really needed in most situations. 10 years ago this would have been a great product, today it's a dinosaur.

            (sarcasm on)
If you like wasting time, having to buy a lot of extras (and wait for them) and being really frustrated and unable to get anything working, then waiting around for hours for support call-backs, then this baby is for you. (sarcasm off)

            Weaknesses:

To get all the functionality claimed in their sales information, you'll end up spending 2-4x the base price.

If you upgrade the firmware, you'll have to reset it to Factory Defaults and reconfigure it to get it working.

The VPN support for remote clients is simply the ability to route packets once you pay extra for their VPN firmware *and* however many lincenses for their VPN client software, and it still leaves you without an easy way to authenticate to Windows domains.

Their support makes you jump through a lot of hoops to prove you own the product and whatever upgrades before they'll stick you on a list to wait around for a call-back Their Web site is practically useless and the documentation poor and misleading.

After all our problem and calls/email to support, which was difficult, their "follow-up" on the support was to try and sell us three different "upgrade" and "support" services at a yearly fee! For a product that others make, you buy, plug in, and forget about. Support for a firewall/VPN router? Why? It should work or shouldn't.

This is a 1990 product in a 2004 world run by a company whose sales/marketing department is 10x bigger than their engineering dept.

            Similar Products Used:

Look at anything by Linksys, Cisco or 3Com, and you'll find something that actually does what it claims without having to spend 2-4x the money on "upgrades" which still leave you with a product that doesn't solve today's products.

I'll avoid AdTran at all costs in the future. Stay away!
