A Very Nice Radio.......2006-04-04

I purchased this radio to replace a GE product that sounded very good. I needed an FM radio for the bedroom that would look nice and perform well. My favorite station is a low powered one that is difficult to receive and my priority was for a sensitive enough tuner to receive that station. The PR-D2 does an admirable job of receiving all the FM stations in this area that are possible to receive. The sound is quite good for a relatively small radio. Very clear and well balanced. A little more bass response would be nice but not required. The appearance is very nice. Kind of an Art Deco look that would fit in with a Poirot set very nicely. You can't go wrong with this radio for the price. Sangean is not an unknown brand and in fact makes the products for many better known brands.

Radio with an Identity Problem.......2006-03-29

This is a very nice radio! It pulls in the weak stations well, is easy to tune (including a knob and digital pointer, for those that like the retro effect). Clock and alarm functions are easy to set, and the Sangean humane wake up is less jarring than most alarms. It sounds good, runs for a long time on D cells, and has an attractive, and eye-catching design. I like it a lot, and even bought a second one to give as a gift!
But what did Sangean have in mind for this high performance portable? As some have pointed out the angle of the display is not optimum for use as a nightstand clock radio. I worry that the cloth grille cloth may be easily damaged by use while one is gardening, or working in the garage. Most customers would be more likely to buy a compact stereo system for use in a den.
My answer : PERFECT for deck/patio use!

UPDATE 7/15/06 :
The display on one of the two that I purchased just before Christmas is starting to fade/miss segments. BUMMER! Radio is now 1 star or less in my book.

Great Sounding Radio for the Money.......2006-02-04

Seperate woofer and tweeter give this retro looking radio a great sound even at loud volumes. Quality can be found in the wood case, LCD panel and smooth knobs.

Great radio for the kitchen, den, basement, etc.

Pulls in FM stations effortlessly.

Its not a Tivoli, but its a third the cost.

Interesting design, poor quality, mediocre sound.......2006-01-21

I had to get a replacement for my first one when the display ran into problems. In researching online I saw that Sangean had display issues on the first lot of these radios. The design is cool, but the audio is nothing to write about, and I would expect better from the 2-way speaker design.

Seemed nice at first then it went to heck..........2005-07-13

I was pleased with the style, performance and the initial perception of quality when I got my Sangean radio. However, I only had it about two weeks when I noticed the digital display starting to act a little wonky. At first it was some flickering. Then it became extraneous lines. Then it turned into complete gobbledygook. Rendering it virtually useless since I couldn't tell what station it was on while tuning it. Eventually the digital disply completely went blank.

I feel like I got burned. I guess I could've gotten a lemon out of a bunch of otherwise good products but when choosing an unknown brand like Sangean it leaves me skeptical of their quality and also leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I doubt I'll ever purchase another one of their products and I can't recommend them to you either.

I have had this readio for a couple of years and find it's sound mello and it's design cool...woken up to it...listened to sports...I don't view TV...enlighten your lives and turn the TV off and the Q on!

Sangean PR-D2 , Not bad, Not great.......2004-04-29

This radio looks great. I really liked the style. However, that's about all I really liked. Another reviewer compared the sound to the Bose Wave radio. Either they've never heard the Bose or they were just really happy with the price comparison. At high volumes the radio sounds ok but at lower volumes it sounds like it play from inside a cardboard box. I could live with that but my real disappointment was with the tuning. I live in the mountains where radio reception is difficult. Usually "PLL Synthesized Digital Tuning for rock stable reception of AM/FM" is exactly that. In this radio the tuning is stable but the reception was worse than other cheap dial tuning radios that I own. Often raising the antenna made the reception even worse. I really wanted to like this radio but it's just lacking in too many areas. The clock vs frequency display feature is another really bad idea.

Great Bedside Radio.......2004-01-25

My Sangean Q arrived via Fedex within 7 days of placing the order.

I was impressed immediately with the classic retro design
and the obvious assembly quality. The controls, large knobs and buttons, are very easy to see, feel, and manipulate. The backlighting glows a warm golden shade and can be turned off. The various buttons on top that control functions are designed to make their use intuitive - I set the radio up to my preferences, and then read the manual! Very simple and straight forward.

Station reception is excellent, very important in rural east Texas. This quality, and the 5 pre-sets on each band, remind me of a car radio. The sound is pleasant and well balanced, a little weak on bass presence and separation, but considering the price and size, very adequate, and better than most other radios in this price range.

The Sangean Q is a fine, general purpose radio with above average convience features and sound. Keep the batteries fresh and you'll have a great emergency radio to boot!

A lot of radio. Not so much clock........2003-04-05

This would appear to be a car radio circuit put in an attractive, rather retro looking package. You get your five preset buttons, and the display is in a panel that looks like it would be at home in a dashboard as well as in the radio you're given.

You get car radio performance out of the radio circuit as well. First night I got it, on the AM side on a spring night I got New Orleans, Toronto, and Cleveland. The FM circuit appears to be just as solid, giving good reception on stations that usually are not easy to hear on the radio it replaced.

There's even a terminal to attach an external AM antenna to this thing; unfortunately there's no provision for an external FM antenna. The FM sound quality is solid, even though stereo can only be had through headphones. As a radio, this would be useful for sports fans and other AM listeners who follow teams in distant cities at night.

The clock radio part is very basic, however, with only one clock or alarm setting. When the radio comes on, as noted below, the display shows the frequency instead of the time; you can't set up for a different display. There's no fancy stuff that allows you to fall asleep to one station and wake to another, or to adjust the sleep and wake volume to different settings. The only way you get a clock memory is to add the batteries that power the radio itself: four D cells. The whole package is rather heavy with the batteries in.

If your needs for a clock radio are very basic, this would work fine. If the performance of the radio is more important than the performance of the clock, again this is a good choice. If you need a multifeature clock radio, look elsewhere.

Sangean Q has serious faults as a clock radio........2003-02-06

I purchased the Sangean Q for use primarily as a clock radio. The problem is that when the radio comes on to wake me up, the time does not display, just the station frequency. To see the time, you must turn off the radio. I'm in the habit of listening to the radio for a while before getting out of bed, and I don't want to have to keep reaching over to turn the radio off and on to check on the time. Another problem is that the display is angled up so that it can only be read from above. Therefore, if the radio is located next to the bed on a nightstand, it cannot be read by someone lying in bed.

On the positive side, it has excellent tone and station holding properties and looks nice, although the wood panels on the sides of the gray version (comes in gold or gray)don't appear to have any finish, making me wonder if they will becomed soiled too easily.

Finally a wireless card that works with Linux!.......2007-09-15

After installing just about every linux distribution there is and trying 3 separate cards, I finally found a combination that works out of the box. SUSE Linux Enterprise Distribution for Workstations (SLED10) will automatically detect this card during installation. Even though the specs for this wireless card only say WEP 64 or 128, the SLED10 driver will also allow you to configure it for WPA Personal. Make sure your router is broadcasting the SSID name during the installation. Once you have the card configured and running, you can make the SSID name invisible again.

The Reviews I read all seemed to say one thing - Speed and Large Area of Reception. Well, it is true! It'll work anywhere in my home and even outside! I have gone as far away as I cared to walk outside and I still had reception and it has worked flawlessly from get go - My laptop is a Compaq 1200XL-118 running Windows 2000 Pro.
I found out newer is not better - sometimes older is tried and true. My Wireless Router is also a Netgear. I have 3 computers direct wired to it and now a laptop that works super! with no wires. My Router supports: 2 PC's XP Pro & W98se, 1 Debian 4.0, and now 1 Compaq laptop on Win2000Pro. Plus a PPC Mac OS 8.6.1

Workin Fine.......2007-09-04

I use this card with my Linksys super G router and it all seems to work very fast with OK range. I did have some problems with setting up the router, but once I set up the wireless router to be behind my old wired router (instead of replacing it) I have had no network problems with the wired PCs, wireless laptop, or Wii! Thank goodness for effective standards organizations!

Good, functional card.......2007-05-18

This is my only wireless adapter, so I don't have anything for comparison. The installation was straightforward, and the card immediately connected with my wireless router. My one complaint is that several times it has disconnected from the router, necessitating a reboot. For routine web-surfing it is not noticeably slower than an ethernet connection. It is doing its job.
