Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Attractive design and function, but wireless network interference--inconsistent and not especially durable.......2005-10-02

I was looking for a caller-ID, call-waiting capable phone for my new home. Nearly everything I looked at online was very ugly. I was drawn to this phone for its visual appeal, very sleek and European, with no antennas on either the handset or the base. I ordered a refurbished one at a very good price, and it arrived with the look and feel of a brand new product. Although several features are programmable, I was able to start using the phone as soon as the battery was fully charged without programming anything or even looking at the instructions. Programming a choice of ring tones and ring tone volume proved to be very simple; the range of tones and volumes is limited but sufficient for my needs. Sound quality is very good, in my opinion, although I do hear a modest echo of my voice when I call. I got used to this and forgot about it quickly. The handset is lightweight, and the design has the added advantage that the handset can be placed face (keyboard and display) up or down in the cradle, so it's possible to see what's on the caller ID display without taking the handset out of the cradle. The only problem I have discovered so far is that the phone does interfere with my wireless internet network, which is a problem that I believe is common to all 2.4GHz cordless phones in proximity to 802.11b networks. This is only a problem if I want to phone and surf the net at the same time, which is not often, and at those times I suppose I can just use the corded phone on my desk. Some might find this a sufficient reason not to buy the phone, but I am very pleased with my purchase despite this drawback, and I have not found another cordless phone that has appealing enough looks to find a place in my home. I expect I may buy a second unit and just live with the network interference problem as the price of getting almost everything I want in a cordless phone.
***Update several months later: I bought a number of these units (refurbished or used) to put all over my house. The failure rate of the units is quite high, and at times the WiFi interference is horrible, even when I'm not surfing the web. On second thought, looks great, but not recommended. Less than a year after purchase, I am looking to replace my entire system with a 5.8 GHz one that will not interfere with my wireless network.

1 out of 5 stars This phone eats batteries.......2003-08-15

Batteries die after a extremely short life. Customer service says that a Nickle Metal Hydride battery should be used instead. Well, if that was the case, why didn't they supply one with the phone? The handset gets very warm when charging unless placed face-down on the base. When the battery dies, the handset/base get very hot and might pose a fire hazard; they should all be recalled and replaced with a better design.

2 out of 5 stars Good feature set marred by unexpected inconveniences.......2002-07-12

While this phone basically does what it advertises to do, it fails to impress because of a certain amount of thoughtlessness in the details.

For example, it is, in fact, imbued with a reliable caller ID service, speed dialing, and a helpful caller log. But the LED screen isn?t backlit. As a result all those neat features aren?t usable at night, when you perhaps need them most. Likewise, its small size at first seems a convenience?until you remember that comfort is more important in a home phone than portability. Bigger phones are better around the house, where you tend to want a phone you can actually rest on your shoulder.

But its bigger offenses, I think, have to do with the way it performs its most basic functions: power and reception.

It requires much more recharge time on the base than much older phones, and that charge evaporates quite quickly?even when the phone is not in active use. Worse, my particular unit?and maybe all of them--doesn?t reliably snap into the base. It?s possible to put the phone in the cradle and yet not have the contacts touch. As a result, the phone could spend hours in the cradle without recharging at all.

Its reception, too, is baffling. While does have a fair range, it seems to pick up background noise more clearly than the sound of my voice--clearly the opposite of how you want a phone to work.

I don?t mean to sound too negative, here. Most of the time it works like it?s supposed to. But I can?t help feeling if it had been tweaked with a little more market research, Seimens might have come up with a more practical product.

3 out of 5 stars nice simple phone...but.......2002-04-07

The LCD or key pad does not have a light. Really inconvenient for low light use. Sound is OK, both sending and receiving.

Product Description

The Siemens 242 operates at the 2.4GHz frequency. The result is clear cordless transmission without static or interference from baby monitors and other cordless phones operating at crowded lower frequencies. ADPCM technology offers superior voice quality, and digital spread spectrum technology makes eavesdropping virtually impossible. Never before a cordless phone has done so many things so well.

Amazon.com Review

The Siemens 242 is a single-line, caller ID-equipped phone that operates on the 2.4 GHz band. Its 2.4 GHz technology ensures a clearer cordless transmission without static or interference from other cordless phones operating at crowded lower frequencies. Plus, digital spread spectrum technology provides optimum security from eavesdropping by "hopping" frequencies more than 100 times every second.

To set up the phone, we inserted the battery pack, plugged in the AC adapter, and charged the battery. After the initial 12-hour charge, the 240 normally recharges in four hours. The Siemens 242 has an unusual configuration in that the AC adapter plugs into an electrical outlet; from the AC adapter two cords emerge: a standard RJ-11 connector that plugs into the telephone wall jack and an RJ-45 connector that plugs into the 242 base station. The 240's controls were generally intuitive, but we did have to consult the manual to set the caller ID language (English, French, or Spanish), to manage the caller ID log, to change the ringer settings, and to program memory dialing. The phone is wall mountable, but the base's design causes it to protrude excessively from the wall.

In our tests of the 242, we placed the base on the floor, and the handset performed flawlessly to a distance of only about 40 feet. Distortion gradually increased as we moved away from the base, and the handset stopped functioning at 195 feet. This is not good performance for a phone in this class. We moved the base station in front of a window and repeated the tests. This time, the handset performed well to a distance of 130 feet and stopped functioning at 270 feet. This performance is much better but still not as good as less expensive 900 MHz DSS phones. Within close proximity to the base, sound quality was very good; the handset sounded only slightly softer than our reference corded desk phone.

The Siemens 242 displays caller ID/call waiting information on a three-line LCD. This LCD displays up to 30 calls and provides both redial and the time of the call. The Siemens 242 also features 10 programmable speed-dial numbers, a choice of four ring tones, base-to-handset paging, ringer and receiver volume controls, two-way charging positions, out-of- range alert, and more. An internal antenna protects the phone against accidental damage. The Siemens 242 comes with a lightweight cordless handset, a base with a built-in charger, a battery pack, a user's manual, and a belt clip. Siemens offers a one-year warranty on this phone. --Mike Brown

    5 out of 5 stars A solid performer at a great price.......2005-07-21

I recently developed a rather urgent need for a PCI Ethernet Card. After upgrading my old computer from Windows 98 to Windows XP, I discovered that the PC's old SMC ISA network adapter would not work under Windows XP. (Should have listened to the XP Compatibility Wizard!)

Based on price and reputation, I took a chance on the Netgear FA311 TX 10/100 Ethernet Card. I was nervous about installing it, based on some of the reviews below. But it seemed most of the complaints related to online gaming. My networking needs are not quite as demanding - browsing, email, Web design, a little Internet chess. So, I crossed my fingers and installed the Netgear into one of the available PCI slots. Both the hardware and software installations were a breeze. The FA311 worked right away, getting an IP address via DHCP from my DSL router. It's kept working ever since - in fact, I can't say much about it, since it works so well. Shouldn't all Plug and Play devices be so invisible?

Users with special networking requirements might want to continue researching this and other cards. But for the average home user, the Netgear FA311 TX 10/100 Ethernet Card is a solid performer at a great price.

Stick w/ Epson ink. The Rinotek does not fit very reassuringly, and the first one did not even work, plus leaked all over the inside of the printer. Stuck a second one in...this one seems to work OK, but just does not fit into the slot with the same, I don't know how else to put it, reassuring way. How 'bout just a sloppy fit, feels like it might pop out.

              1 out of 5 stars Misleading discription.......2005-12-14

I intended to buy a cartridge of Stylus C80 compatable cyan
ink. Below the listing I checked out other items. This listing
showed a four cartridge set at significant discount. I checked
item discription and technical data . I ordered thinking I was getting a set of all four colors for my printer. When I opened the package, I found four cartridges of Magenta. First I thought
it was a shipping error. but the invoice was correct. IN NO PLACE DID THE LISTING SAY MAGENTA INK CARTRIDGES. NOT IN THE
ITEM DISCRIPTION OR TECHNICAL DATA. IT WAS ONLY BY UNDERSTANDING THE PRODUCT CODE THAT YOU WOULD KNOW THIS. I AM RETURNING THE ORDER AND CLOSING MY ACCOUNT!!

                  Amazon.com Product Description

Samsung has combined three of today's most popular electronic gadgets--digital cameras, MP3 players, and Webcams--into one compact device: the Digimax 35 MP3 digital camera. A true point-and-shoot camera, the Digimax uses a fixed-focus lens to provide simple operation, letting you worry about finding the perfect shot instead of finding the right camera settings. The 640 x 480 resolution of the Digimax makes great pictures to post on a Web site or send via e-mail.

The Digimax 35 MP3 really shines when used in conjunction with its included accessories. The software that comes with the camera helps you to create panoramic shots, as well as animations and simulated 3-D images, and a small tripod makes it easy to use the camera as a Webcam.

As mentioned above, two features set the Digimax 35 MP3 apart from other point-and-shoot digital cameras: an integrated MP3 player, and the ability to act as a Webcam. In MP3 mode, the camera plays files stored on CompactFlash cards. The camera's included 8 MB card will hold only about eight minutes of music--a couple of songs--so if you plan to use this feature, you'll want to invest in a larger-capacity memory card. As a Webcam, the camera can shoot footage at 5 frames per second (fps) at a resolution of 320 x 240, or 15 fps at a resolution of 160 x 120. A USB connection ensures speedy music and image transfers.

the camera is awesome and it is so worth the money and i hope other people think so too.

1 out of 5 stars WORST CAMERA I'VE EVER SEEN.......2002-11-02

In August 2001, I bought a Samsung Digimax 35 MP3, the first Samsung product I bought, and I feel very disappointed about it. It certainly possesses a number of features making it attractive, such as a fancy design, portability, easiness of operation, easy-to-use software etc. But when it comes to performance, it's very disappointing for the following reasons:
                  (1) EXTREMELY poor image quality, in what concerns range of colors. The images all look very much alike: brown-gray. No sharp colors, nor any vivid colors. It's hard to accept that a digital camera of these days performs so poorly in this respect. Right from the start, I was willing to accept a limited image size in exchange for the camera's price, but I never, ever could imagine that its color performance could be so bad.
                  (2) EXTREMELY limited luminosity range. Again, I can't accept that a digital camera could be so limited in this respect. It looks like I'm trying to use a ISO 25 film to take night shots, but I'm using a digital camera to photograph in a room with reasonable lighting, or even at open air at dawn or dusk. How can a digital camera have such a limited lux range?
                  (3) EXTREMELY poor image sharpness. All it takes is just a little less than full Sun light and we get fuzzy edges and, more frequently than not, blurred images. It's just unbelievable!
                  (4) The camera shuts itself down after a very short time, so whenever I'm about to take a snapshot, I almost always miss the opportunity. And it takes an incredibly long time to start-up again.
                  (5) Very high battery consumption, or, if one prefers to put it reversibly, very low energy storage capacity. I just can't fill-up the camera's memory chip before having to change the batteries. Such a strange (=poor) engineering design. For all the reasons above, I'm convinced that the Digimax 35 mp3 is not worth at all the US$ 200.00 I paid for it.
Digimax 35 MP3 is sold as a camera that also records MP3. Since I didn't buy the camera because of MP3, I have never used its MP3 features. So, giving you the benefit of doubt to say its a good MP3 device, this thing should be sold as an MP3 recorder that, by the way, can be used marginally to shoot some low resolution, blue-and-brown photos once in a while.
My wife keeps telling me to sell the camera to get the money back, but I don't feel comfortable charging anything to anyone just ofr getting rid of this such low-performance equipment. And what I do want to do is having a camera worth the price I paid for it.
I tried to send this review/complaint to Samsung many many many times through their "contact us" e-mail address, but all I get are error messages.

5 out of 5 stars all in one product!!!.......2002-01-02

this product is very nice for beginners to digital imaging. It has all capabilities of playing mp3,taking photos and sending videos. Compare to other products I would say that the photos are sharp enough but it is slow to make videos.By 16mb memory card you can take your favorite mp3s to listen. If you want to get sharp images with high quality this product is not for you but considering price it is the one of the best price/quality product.I have used this to send my photos to my family and they liked the images.

                  1 out of 5 stars Injures 3 birds with 1 stone.......2001-10-19

I recieved one of these things free from iwin.com. Although a cool idea, this thing is poor at everything it does. The pictures are blurry, the performance from the webcam is probably terrible, and the mp3 player is a joke. Here are my complaints:

                  1. Driver intstallation was a failure on the pc I intended to use this device on. It worked on a second PC no problem, but even downloading the latest drivers from samsung was no help on pc #1.

                  2. 8MB compact flash is way too little. You'll want to shell out $40-$100 for a much more storage. Unless you want to listen to the same song over and over again, or only have the ability to take a few pictures.

                  3. Earphone plug is tiny (I think 1/16" plug) so forget about using your own earphones or car adapter. The included earphones are low quality.

                  4. MP3 controls are terrible on the device. You have to press mode several times to do anything.

                  5. Flash offers 2 modes "auto" and off. Using auto, the camera decides if it's going to use the flash. If it's not using it, the picture is taken on the first press of the button. If it is, you have to press the button once to charge the flash, and a second time to take the picture. This means when you press the button, you have to be ready for the picture to be taken right then, but the possibility remains that it may have to charge for awhile. Very annoying!!

                  6. The video capture feature crashed my computer. Generally USB capture devices are low quality anyway, so don't expect anything special from this assuming you can get it to work.

So to sum up, this device attempts to perform 3 cool functions, but comes up short in all categories. Trust me.. I love gadgets, but not this one. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!! You have been warned.

1 out of 5 stars weird headphone connector.......2001-10-12

what is the point of making an mp3 player with some weird headphone connector that is unlike any connector on any other piece of equipment, and only fits the headphones that camne wiht the machine? manufacturers as stupid as this deserve to be boycotted for all time.
