2 out of 5 stars If you use SanDisk SD memory cards beware!!!!.......2004-08-17

I bought the Viking Intelliflash 6-in-1 USB Flash Memory Reader with the hopes of being able to save battery life on a digital camera. However, on trying an SD memory card from a camcorder I have, it ruined the card and said "files corrupted" and I lost all the pics. I read some of the other reviews and realised the problem lied with the SanDisk memory card I used.

I later tried a Kingston Memory Card I had bought for the digital camera and it worked fine.

1 out of 5 stars Don't even think about buying this!.......2004-07-17

This is a piece of junk.

The first time I inserted a smart media card, the card went all the way into the unit. To get it out, I had to call customer support who told me how to disassemble the unit so that I could extract it. Great start!

It does not consistently read CF cards.

Bottom line-stay away.

1 out of 5 stars Corrupted first disk I tried.......2004-07-11

I tried this the first time with a brand new SD bought on vacation - could see pictures fine on camera but when used this Viking memory reader said disk and files corrupted. Was able to retrieve all but first five photos fortunately - unfortunately one of the five photos was a precious one that cannot be retrieved that was the main reason for the trip (daughter and father dancing).

1 out of 5 stars Thank God for Amazon's great return policy.......2004-06-13

I use several different types of cards for my camera and PDA, so I figured this would be a great thing to have. Installation is very easy, especially under Windows XP, where it it true Plug-and-Play. For other systems there is a CD with drivers included.

What is supposed to happen is that when it installs is that it will maps an addition four drives onto your computer; one for each slot. Unfortunatly it does not seem to be able to map the Smart Media drive. Even after installing the drivers off of the disc it was not able to read the SM drive.

I had two of these things; the first I exchanged for a new one after it failed to read anything. On the first one the slots weren't mounted to the face plate correctly, so when I put in the Smart Media card it fell into the back of the device and I had to spent five minuets shaking the thing out.

The second one I got was mounted correctly, but unable to read the SM cards. While it could read the Secure Digital card, it erased everything on it. Fortunatly I only had a couple of files on it, but a lot of people use SD cards for storing programs or pictures, and they would have lost everything if they used this. The Compact Flash card was the only one that worked reliably, but even that one I had problems with since it was difficult to jam the card all of the way into the slot.

I am very dissapointed with this device and with Viking, who usually makes good products. Most people don't use all six types of cards, so a lot of them would go to waste, so I would recomend just getting seperate readers for each card. It'll cost more, but probably worth it in the long run.

On a side note, I would just like to say that Amazon.com has an excellent No-questions-asked return policy. After I asked to replace my first one they paided the return postage and sent me a new one two days later.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with SD Cards.......2004-05-17

***This card reader is not compatible with newer SanDisk SD cards***

I got the following response from Viking Tech Support on May 17, 2004:

"We have had a few customers report seeing problems with some Sandisk cards. It appears to be a compatibility issue with Sandisk's new SD cards and the reader. The new Sandisk cards read/write speeds are faster than their older cards, and this difference may be the cause of the error.

Currently Engineering is looking at the problem. When we find a resolution I will send you an update."

Product Description

SanDisk ImageMate is the fastest way to transfer digital data to/from your PC. ImageMate sits on your desk and acts like a removable disk drive, treating the memory card like a diskette. Drag and drop files from the card to your hard disk drive and back. ImageMate simply connects to your printer port with a printer pass through connector to keep your printer online.Take the memory card from the camera, insert it into the ImageMate and copy your favorite pictures onto your PC in seconds. Data transfer speeds are at least 20 times faster than serial port connectivity - great for large and numerous images. Since the camera does not have to connect to the PC for downloads, it saves battery power. SanDisk ImageMate also allows to transfer data from your Handheld/Palm PC to your desktop PC and vice versa.

Amazon.com Product Description

This handy device lets you quickly and easily transfer images between CompactFlash cards and your PC. Devices that use CompactFlash cards (digital cameras, MP3 players, PDAs) nearly always include a transfer cable, but these often use the PC's serial port, which is much slower than the parallel port. To avoid tying up your parallel port, the drive uses a pass-through connector, which allows the drive to share the port with a parallel printer.

5 out of 5 stars Great buy for the money.......2007-01-05

Great reader. I use it instead of pluging my camera to the computer. Fast and easy!

1 out of 5 stars Crash City!.......2001-10-27

This device causes my computer to display the dreaded azure tableau morte when I try to use it. I'm taking it back tomorrow.

5 out of 5 stars Are you stuck on Windows NT too?.......2001-09-07

As you may have learned the hard way, Windows NT does not support USB regardless of whether your computer has it or not. Not one single store in my local area (Orange County, CA) carries a parallel port compact flash card reader (they've all joined the 21st century with USB). I bought the Scan Disc model and love it. In fact, I just purchased two more for my coworkers that are constantly bugging me to use the compact flash card reader to retrieve their photos. From other reviews I can see that the Scan Disc is superior to the Kodak model. I have no complaints; it's easy to hook-up and it works just fine. If you're aware of what a compact flash card reader is then there's probably no need to tell you how much easier it is to use vs. the archaic software that comes with most cameras. Although, the software does give you thumbnail image views making digging up old photos much easier.

1 out of 5 stars Windows 95 Customers Beware!.......2001-08-12

If you have Windows 95, do NOT purchase this item. Despite what they say, this card reader is NOT compatible with Windows 95 and will cause the system to crash repeatedly. I spent hours installing, uninstalling and re-installing both the hardware and the software -- to no avail. Besides the Windows 95 problem, the parallel cable included with the card reader also caused my printer to malfunction -- the reason according to my printer: the cable "does not support bi-directional communication". This whole experience was one big nightmare....the only bright spot is that Amazon's return procedure is much less painless than I expected -- I am returning the SanDisk Imagemate Card Reader today!

4 out of 5 stars worked for me - NT 4.0 on Toshiba Tecra 8100 laptop.......2001-07-01

I recently received a wonderful gift of a Kodak DX3500 digital camera, with the Loading Dock that connects it to a PC. My initial elation evaporated as I discovered that the Dock-to-PC connection requires a USB connection. The Toshiba Tecra 8100 laptop I'm using has a USB port, but it's taped over because NT 4.0 doesn't support USB (Win2000 and 98 do). I turned to look for a device that would read the camera's CompactFlash card, but didn't need USB to connect. After some scouring of the web (including a comical dead end involving "tech" reps who couldn't provide answers to compatibility questions beyond reading from the company same web page I was already looking at, and a more technical rep who informed me that the item was no longer available from the mfr. and agreed that it probably should be removed from that e-tailer's web page), I found the SanDisk ImageMate External Parallel CF Card Reader. This device provided what I needed: a CompactFlash card reader with a non-USB connection to a machine running NT 4.0.

The setup was painless. The ImageMate plugs into the parallel port, with a passthrough connection for the printer. Power is drawn from a passthrough connection to the PS/2, into which the mouse cable connector fits.

The ImageMate software makes the device appear as a mapped drive. You can read, write, and delete picture files on this drive. A provided software utility swaps out the ImageMate (to let you safely removed the picture card).

We installed the Kodak Loading Dock on a Win98 USB machine, and it works just great. But transfer on the ImageMate is almost as fast and easy.

I've been verbose in this review for the sake of others running the web search I did. You've probably come to the only right place. (I didn't find any other easily acceptable connection devices.)

2 out of 5 stars Great while it worked..........2005-12-19

Same problem as some other people mentioned. While it worked for about a year, it was great. Then just stopped working about a week after warranty was finished. Very poorly built. Would not buy again.

5 out of 5 stars Everything is great.......2005-09-08

Got the product fast and in working order. I can now download a full gig of photos in 4 min rather than 18. Love it.

2 out of 5 stars Good at first but then died.......2004-05-16

This product worked fine for about a year and then died. It seems as this is a common problem. Be careful.

2 out of 5 stars 2 never worked properly.......2004-05-09

I went through two before I gave up, the first one never worked proeprly. It transferred very slowly at first and then not at all. I RMA'd the first one and the one that replaced it worked for two uses before dying. I've since picked up a $8 usb reader that is much slower but much more reliable. I've done lots of video editing with the firewire card so I don't know what kept killing the drives. It'll take some real convincing to get me to buy another lexar product. I hate being negative, but this experience really soured me. It sounds like many have had better success than I, but be ware.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it is supposed to do.......2004-03-09

1. Works when you plug it in (Im using a mac G4). No need to configure anything, just plug it in.
2. Downloads your photos fast. This is much faster than connecting the camera directly to the computer.

I like it. Buy it.

This is a great product. I use it at school and the volume levels are excellant. It is also so simple to operate that the children can use it. I would recommend it to anyone.

        5 out of 5 stars High Quality Radio/CD/Tape Player.......2005-08-24

This is a very nicely designed product with a remote control included. It has a fairly small footprint compared to some of the other similar products. Includes all of the features like bass boost, settings for various types of music, as well as being able to use it with batteries or ac. I like it a lot.

        5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!.......2005-08-10

For the price, this is an excellent boombox. The display is backlit and easy to read. Remote control is relatively simple to use. Plays CD-Rs without a problem. Overall it is nice looking and not as ridiculous as some other boomboxes on the market. It does what I need it to do.

4 out of 5 stars Good "Value" product.......2005-04-24

        OPENING NOTES:
I bought this boombox for use in my apartment bedroom at school. I already owned a shelf system, that produced notably better sound, but that also took up too much space for a small room.

What I was looking for in a boombox were compact size, high features for fairly low cost, and decent sound.

        PROS:
        - The remote is handy.
        - Attractive appearance.
        - Compact.
        - Digital AM/FM tuner.

        CONS:
        - Poor "Hyper Bass Sound" System.
        - Lacks manual bass/treble adjustment.

        REVIEW:
I was quite pleased with this product's compact size and aesthetically pleasing appearance. I will note, because it's hard to tell from the provided product image, that the inlay color is a faux carbon fiber look (which is approximately a checkered black and gray).

I will also note that contrary to the information under the product's "Technical data", it does NOT have a dual cassette deck - it is a SINGLE cassette deck. This wasn't a factor for me since I don't play cassette tapes, but it might be for some buyers.

The antenna seems to work quite well - I haven't had to even put it up, and still get great reception of the handful of stations I listen to.

The digital AM/FM tuning is great and is a MUST for anyone shopping for a boombox.

The remote control is full-featured and convenient. The only thing it doesn't seem it would work for is the cassette deck. But I haven't tested that and, again, it isn't a factor for me since I don't play cassette tapes.

If you do play or record cassette tapes, it does have a neat "Muting" function that would probably come in handy for you. (The Muting button works for the CD and radio also.)

What is a bit disappointing about this boombox is the sound - it could be more robust. The HBS ("Hyper Bass Sound" System) does almost nothing - there is virtually no difference between listening with or without it turned on. Further, it would be nice if there was a manual bass/treble adjustment, whether analog or digital. Basically, the system just needs more bass. However, the EQ Presets are at least a step in the right direction.

The display can also be toggled to show the time.

        SUMMARY:
This is a very respectable boombox for the price. It boasts quality and high features, including digital AM/FM tuning and a remote.

You can really only expect up to a certain level of sound quality from ANY boombox, because it is, after all, just a boombox and not a shelf or home entertainment system. That said, however, I still think that they could have gotten better, more robust sound from this system.

If I could do it over again, I would have purchased the Panasonic RX-D27 Boombox (ASIN: B0002KU76U)instead. I have not heard one play, but looking at the technical data shows that it has more powerful speakers (5 watts per channel vs. 2 watts on the JVC); 2-way speakers, which would probably give better sound articulation; and virtual surround sound. Sadly I did not discover the Panasonic unit until after I had already ordered the JVC.

Still, this is isn't a bad purchase - I think it's a pretty good deal for a boombox.
