And with a design that will have you up and running in about ten minutes, it doesn't get much simpler than this.

The Hollywood-at-Home is a sleek-looking, complete home-theater system that offers the full range of features that you'd expect, along with full-room sound, thanks to Dolby's Virtual Speaker technology. As long as you're not in the hunt for a system with wattage that will blow your windows out, then this home-theater set-up may be just what you're looking for.

Simplity in Style and Delivery
While full surround sound systems may offer the pinnacle of the home-theater experience, the costs in time, labor and frustration to set them up have sent many home-entertainment rookies packing. Running a gamut of speaker wires up and around the room to optimize a system's sound, in addition to playing the endless game of connect-the-countless-color-coded-wires, is not exactly an ideal way to spend a relaxing evening -- or two, or three -- at home. With this simple system, Sherwood is betting that there are enough of us who don't think tool belts are fine fashion accessories.

With the Hollywood-at-Home system, all you need to do is connect a few bare-wire-terminated speaker wires, along with a few other clearly marked wires and indoor antennas to their respective inputs on the receiver, plug in a couple of AC power cords into a wall socket, and you're essentially done. If you're an audio-video savant, this will take you all of seven minutes; if you're a newbie, you might need twelve, maybe fifteen minutes, to do the job.

Simplicity extends to the unit's design as well. The receiver is all of four inches high with a 17 x 11-inch (W x D) footprint and features a sleek, silver-plastic curved design that complements the two eight-inch tall silver satellite speakers. The largest component is the subwoofer at 8 x 12 x 12 inches (W x H x D). With a dark, wood-like grain exterior, it will barely be noticed when placed on the floor. When you power the system up, matching subtle accent lights beneath the receiver and on the front of the subwoofer come on. The fluorescent display on the receiver offers just enough light to get the job done in both full-light and darkened conditions. In short, there's nothing about the design that calls out for attention, which means you can focus on the "theater" component of the system, and not on the system's components.

A Full, but Tempered Sound
To cut to the chase, the technical details for the Hollywood-at-Home components are as follows: The 100-watt subwoofer offers phase control and a variable crossover from 50 to 150 hertz, while each of the speakers, featuring a three-inch woofer and one-inch soft dome tweeter, offers a frequency range of 140 hertz to 20 kilohertz and can handle up to 25 watts. The amplifier outputs all of 50 total watts of power over two channels. All told, the system has 150 total watts at its disposal.

In head-to-head spec comparisons with its competition, Hollywood-at-Home clearly suffers in the power department. When we threw in a few of our favorite action DVDs and musicals that screamed at us for more volume, the system was disappointing. Ideally, this unit is designed best for an apartment-like set-up in which excessively high-volumes will land you in the landlord's dog house, or in a small-room situation, such as a bedroom. The bottom line is that if you want to host an unforgettable Super Bowl party, you'll want to look elsewhere for your home-theater needs.

However, despite it's minor-league power output, the sound Hollywood-at-Home offers is surprisingly full, and its surround-sound-like audio gymnastics make it hard to believe that the system is relying on only two-channels. Within the Dolby Virtual Speaker options, the "wide" mode gave the illusion of sound coming at us from beyond the physical reach of the speakers. In fact, voices at times seemed to come from behind us. With the exception of the issue of overall power, we couldn't have been happier with the system's performance.

As for the visuals, with a flick of the remote, Hollywood-at-Home offers progressive scan playback. When compared side-by-side with our more expensive, but non-progressive-scan, DVD player, the colors were crisper and the pictures sharper. We could also zoom in and even change the angle on scenes, two features that added another surprising dimension to our review. Our playback of CD, CD-MP3, and DVD files was flawless. For true video-philes, the system also supports PAL playback.

As for the rest of the story, Hollywood-at-Home includes features we'd expect any home-theater system to have, such as AM/FM tuning (with 30 presets), repeat/random/programmed track playback, easy-to-set-up parental controls, and so on. Our only other complaint, a minor one, concerns the glow-in-the-dark controls on the otherwise excellent, universal, multi-brand remote control. In dark conditions, the touch pad is easy to read, but when a movie scene fills the otherwise dark room with bright light, the "glow" disappears and the controls become invisible. A back-lit touch pad would have been a nice addition.

Excellent Sound, great price!.......2007-08-29

I have had this unit for over a year and it has been an excellent purchase for me. The sound is very good, the unit is relatively compact. The DVD has proved to be very reliable as there are, on average, 1-2 movies per day that my family will watch.

The only issue we have had is with the remote. It did not work overly well from the start as the range was less than 6 feet. Eventually it stopped working completely. However, a replacement is relatively cheap.

I can't imagine a more compact, better sounding, lower cost system than this.

Okay while it worked..........2007-08-01

I bought this about 11 months ago, and everything worked okay for a while. I say okay because the sound was a bit weaker than I expected. Maybe my expectations were too high for a two speaker system. After about 4-6 months of use, the DVD player acted funny. It would freeze up or not detect DVDs. I blamed Netflix and would send movies back to them, thinking they were defective. It was random, so the excuse seemed to make sense. After months of thinking Netflix was retarded, I realized that it was actually my DVD player that was causing the problems. The sporadic problems became more and more common, and about a month ago, the DVD player just stopped working. I am sending it back to Amazon for a partial refund. Total waste of time and money.

I wish I had listened to the other reviewers. First, the sound is lousy. I realize that this isn't a powerful ear drum busting stereo, but I expected to at least be louder than the cheap speakers that were built in to my TV, but they weren't. Even with the volume full blast, the sound was just barely acceptable.

Then after about a week of use, it stopped playing my DVDs entirely. In fact, it would not even recognize them as a DVD.

On the bright side, Amazon is taking it back and giving me a refund.

poor customer service.......2007-05-04

We bought this system in January. Right out of the box, the buttons did not work. You could only control the unit with the remote, so heaven help you if you couldn't find the remote. By February, it was having trouble playing DVDs.

Sherwood will not refund your money, their policy is that you have to take the unit to a repair shop. So we did, in February. Now it is May, and the repair shop still has not received the parts they need to fix the unit.

Sherwood Home Theater.......2007-04-11

I had purchased the unit from Amazon and it arrived quickly. The instructions can be a little hard to understand for a novice as they do not show set up for cable boxes specifically. Since most homes nowdays have CATV, it would be beneficial to list CATV setup. The sound was of very good quality for the first couple days. While listening one evening, it sounded as if a speaker fell off the wall and the unit shutdown. When I powered it back up it would shut off after about 5 to 7 seconds. I called Sherwood and they were of no help and just told me to return to Amazon. I returned to Amazon and got a replacement and that has been working okay for the last week. (Fingers Crossed) I like the sound, just am not sure yet on the dependability or lack of Sherwood Support. Of course I can buy 5 of these for the price of the Bose 123 and I cannot tell the differece in sound quality.

Easy to set up and run modem.......2007-08-11

We bought the Netopia ADSL 2+ Modem after our older modem died (probably lightning related). It took us only 5 minutes to set up the modem to work with our AT&T DSL account and our Motorola router. The software interface is easy to use and quick. We now have a reliable and fast connection. We've doubled our transfer rates just by replacing our older modem with this modem.

It appears that you might be able to set up a new service provider account with the web interface if you don't have one already.

Great as Cordless Phone, Good Fax.......2007-05-16

My priority with this phone was to merge the cordless landline we had in the house, with a fax machine that we did not have room for. The cordless phone is great. Voicemail, all of it was easy to set up. The fax quality from an incoming fax is good. Can't say great, but it's not terrible. Don't rely on this machine to triple as your copy machine if you care about keeping crisp details. All in all, I am very happy with this product.

I joined VONAGE & needed a phone that would work wirelessly as VONAGE rendered the telephone wiring in my house useless. I bought one extension & it's been OK. The 5.8 gig size provides plenty of coverage throughout my tiny house. The one thing that doesn't work well for me is the Toll Saver feature when calling to check messages - it may be the phone or it may be related to VONAGE, but I had to set it to five rings for checking messages. It would be nicer to have Toll Saver work properly, but otherwise the thing works well. I don't fax a lot but the few occasions I do, it's fairly OK - again, any problems I have may be related more to the VONAGE/phone interface.

Almost Perfected!!.......2006-01-04

Sometimes manufacturer's get it right. This product is no exception. All of the features work as advertised. It is economical with it's use of the "printing film" (for copies and faxes). Of course, the more you fax and copy, the sooner it will run out.

I've purchased 4 additional "remote hand sets" (Quantity:2 of KXTGA520M and quantity:2 of KXTGA523M). I also purchased the Headset KXTCA92) as well for my office.

I've owned this system for 10 months and everything works flawlessly! Calls are crystal clear; Conference works great; it stores over 30 "missed" calls (I usually delete them when there is that many). I've only replaced the replaceable film once. I'd say that I fax and copy maybe twice a week. The battery life on all of the phones is excellent. I've had conference calls lasting up to 5 hours (thank god for the headset) and the battery still listed 3 full bars after I hung up.

There is a nice backlight to see who's calling. There is also a nice female digital voice that reads off who is calling when the phone rings. This feature may seem trivial, but it works at every handset throughout the house so you don't have to be near the "main terminal" to hear it. If the caller does not allow caller ID, but allow their call number to display, the female voice says "number available" but does not read the number. If their "name" comes up, it will read the name and gets it pronounced correctly about 85% of the time. For example, a phone call from "Dan & Angela Dickens" is pronounced correctly but a call from "UNICOM" is pronounced "u-ni-come" instead of U-NI-COM.

Here's the one drawback: When someone like a telemarketer calls and you see that it's from an "888" number, you can hit the "off" button which stops that particular phone from ringing any further. However, it does not stop ALL of the other phones from continuing to ring. As I said, I purchased 4 other handsets scattered throughout the house so you can hear the other phones ringing after you hit the "off" button. A minor annoyance I've found to be a small mark on the overall feature set.

The distance allowed from the "main terminal" is also excellent. I've been on conference calls and walked to my mailbox outside which is about 700 feet away with no loss or degredation of signal. I am not sure what the manufacturer specifications are but I believe that is plenty for just about any household or small office.

To summarize, I've owned 3 of these types of "all in one" phone systems over the past 10 years and this model (and it's accessories) are top notch! I recommend it highly to anyone!

This is my fourth fax-copier and telephone answering system. By far the easiest to use, smaller on the desktop, quality sound and printing. Highly recommended.

I did a lot of research before buying this product but decided on it because of its 5.8GHZ cordless telephone/fax capability. Once I had the machine, it intimidated me because of all the features it offered but I quickly found out that it is extremely user friendly. It offers easy to use menus and even contains help information which can easily be printed out from the fax. Receiption on the telephone is crystal clear, even when used near a PC. Faxes received are also very clear. The only negative aspect of this system is the fact that it only comes with one extender phone and additional phones are a little pricey. That said, I am very happy with my choice and would buy this system again in a heartbeat.
