Product Description

The world's first 2.11-megapixel digital camcorder is here, and it's from Sony. Sony's revolutionary DCR-IP220 Network Handycam camcorder IP uses MICROMV technology to deliver exceptional video and still image quality in an incredibly compact and ingeniously designed package. Not only does the DCR-IP220 record exceptional video at 530 lines of resolution, but the still image resolution is unprecedented for a Sony Handycam camcorder at 1600x1200 (2 megapixels)! This unit features an all-new design with the 2-1/2" SwivelScreen color LCD mounted on the back, making it even easier to see the action as it happens. And video and still images on Memory Stick media can be easily emailed or posted to the Internet, right from the camera, using Bluetooth networking technology!

Amazon.com Review

Early Adopters Pick: Oct ober 2002. The world's first digital camcorder that also takes 2.1-megapixe l digital still pictures; weighs only 24 ounces and has integrated Bluetooth te chnology to transfer images to a computer without wires or cables.

Sony's 2-megapixel DCR-IP220 is a serious recording tool for the digital videographer who wants all of Sony's advanced features in a single camcorder. The DCR-IP220 records on the miniscule MicroMV tapes, offers Super NightShot and Night Framing modes, hologram autofocusing, and Bluetooth connectivity. Unfortunately, all of these hefty features add up to a fairly hefty price.

Assuming that cost isn't an object, this camcorder does pretty much anything you'd want it to. The MicroMV tapes--70 percent smaller than MiniDV--each have a 64 KB memory chip so you can scan through different sections of the tape like a DVD, locating scenes by their thumbnails.

The high-detail 2.5-inch LCD swings up above the camcorder, and pivots 270-degrees so you can view it from almost any angle--including in front of the camera. The LCD also serves as a touchscreen interface, with a stylus for accessing menus, and it displays both approximate battery life and remaining storage space.

For storing short clips and still images (at 1,600 by 1,200 resolution), the DCR-IP220 features a Memory Stick slot and includes an 8 MB stick. Its night and low-light filming capabilities are quite impressive--we were able to read details from across a darkened room with the Super NightShot mode. And the Night Framing mode takes bright, full-color still images in limited light.

Connectivity options abound, with FireWire (either camera to camera or camera to PC), USB, and Bluetooth support built into the camcorder. It also includes a color viewfinder, intelligent pop-up flash, and an adequate (although not stellar) 10x optical zoom.

Sony's DCR-IP220 isn't for the faint of wallet, but if you're not satisfied with anything but the best, this camcorder was built for you. --J. Curtis

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's FireWire-equipped DCR-IP220 MicroMV Handycam camcorder features a 2.1-megapixel CCD sensor and offers 530 lines of horizontal video resolution and still image resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels.

The DCR-IP220 boasts Carl Zeiss optics with an advanced multilayer coating. It features a 10x optical and 120x precision digital zoom, SteadyShot picture stabilization, and a super NightShot infrared system for recording in total darkness--new to MicroMV Handycam camcorders.

In addition to video, the DCR-IP220 offers enhanced digital still photo features, including intelligent pop-up flash and hologram AF--an autofocus feature designed to achieve accurate subject focus with minimal contrast in dark conditions. Through an MPEG movie AD mode, the DCR-IP220 also allows you to capture MPEG1 compressed video and audio for up to 60 seconds directly to Memory Stick media in four different quality modes: light, standard, fine, and super fine.

The MicroMV tape is 70 percent smaller than a MiniDV tape and provides up to 60 minutes of digital video footage. It has a 64K memory chip that allows for a multisearch function to access different recorded sections of the tape as one would on a DVD, creating a thumbnail image of each recorded scene on the tape. Additionally, whenever a MicroMV cassette is inserted into the camcorder or the VCR mode is used, cassette information is automatically displayed on the LCD, showing the first and last date of use, how much recording space remains, and titling capability so the user can title the videotape.

Connect to your PC or Mac via a super-fast IEEE 1394 port (also called FireWire). You can also connect wirelessly to a Bluetooth-enabled PC.

2 out of 5 stars Long time user - not satisfied.......2007-01-01

I have had this camera for over two years. While the images are accpetable, I am have a terrible time capturing software. If your main goal is video editing, then this camera will be a nightmare.

Pros: Small, relatively easy to operate.

CONS: expensive camera, expensive tapes, still images are not of good quality when considering a comparable still camera, proprietary format may go way of betamax. No microphone jack, makinig it hard to hear people in crowded area. While using pinnacle, when editing, I have to spend more time syncing the sound, rather than being creative with the editing process. (Granted, this may be a pinnacle software issue, but it highlights the lack of compability with the .mmv format).

If I knew then what I know now, I would not buy this camera.

3 out of 5 stars microMV is not for everyone.......2003-09-20

on paper, the IP220 looks like a winner. but after a close look and i'm not as sold...

pros:
- delivers vibrant colors when shooting in daylight.
- 10x carl zeiss vario-sonnar T* lens.
- 2MP still capability.
- great connectivity options: firewire, USB, S-video, headphone, bluetooth, mic input, etc.
- has a built in pop-up flash for taking stills.
- steady shot and night shot.
- ability to record mpeg videos directly to memory stick.
- top-loading cassette.
- boatloads of optional accessories.
- manual focus/zoom ring on lens.
- has NightFraming which allows you to focus and compose your scene in total darkness with the aid of the infrared emitter, then shoot a full-color still with the pop-up flash. very cool.

cons:
- microMV format is proprietary and may go the way of betamax.
- microMV video quality is noticeably worse than MiniDV.
- images emerge washed-out when shooting indoors.
- uses an mpeg version that may not be compatible with your current video editor.
- Super Night Shot, Color Night Shot very choppy in low/no light.
- not Mac compatible.
- very bad ergonomics - zoom and photo shutter controls are poorly positioned.
- LCD can't tilt backwards - if you've had it before, you'll miss the ability to show kids themselves as you videotape them.
- the advantage of microMV is size but that's not reflected in this camcorder. this is the biggest microMV camcorder out there: 3.9"W x 3.0"H x 5.3"D, weighing 1.5 lbs. you can get smaller camcorders like the panasonic's gs70 or sony's trv33 or the pc105. granted, those have less features, mainly still camera capability (2.0 megapixel vs 1.0 megapixel).
- as with most sony products, you pay a premium, pushing up the price.
- the included 8MB memory stick (for a 2 megapixel still camera!) is unacceptable. you'll need at least a 64MB memory stick with if you want to take full advantage of the higher resolution pics you'll be taking.
- although bundling the camcorder and still camera together means you only have to carry one piece of equipment, it also means that if one breaks, you have to replace both.
- as an alternate to this bundling strategy, you can get a gs70 or trv33 or pc105 and get a 3 megapixel still camera and still save money in the process!
- battery life could be better.
- only 2.5" LCD and it's not as crisp as others in the sony line-up.
- non-intuitive menu system.
- bottom loading battery so you can't replace this while mounted on a tripod.
- the accessory shoe is not a hot shoe.
- no built in video light but you can get one less than a hundred bucks.

in the end, the microMV format is a deal breaker for me. it is sony proprietary and not widely supported. and the main reason for even using microMV (size) is not really reflected in this camcorder. if you're looking for a camcorder/camera hybrid, i'd say wait a couple more years (hopefully). the still quality is just not there yet. your best bet is to get a decent camcorder and complement it with a stand-alone digital camera.

i hope this helps your buying decision. peace.

3 out of 5 stars Micromv:Not for the Serious Computer Video Editor.......2003-09-13

I bought the Sony DCR IP220 because of its 2.0 Megapixel capabilities and while I love the resolution that it displays on the TV, I am not impressed with the quality of footage after capturing to computer. Here are the pros and cons that I have found:

PROS:
1.Great resolution and great quality video produced (530 lines and 2.2 megapixels). (5 star quality)
2. Digital zoom (X700) works fine using a tripod and produces somewhat clear images. Any zoom magnification up to X120, produces very clear moving images.
3. The still pictures are compatible with any 2.0 megapixel camera.
4. Low light video never appeared grainy.
5. Touch screen menu-Many options are available & can be reached quickly. It has a similar feeling to a PDA Palm pilot.

CONS:
1.Video Editing or video email is only possible if your computer system is Windows ME, XP, 2000, and above. If you have Windows 98/98SE and below, then you need to upgrade.
2.If you are into serious computer editing, then this is not the camera for you. The Micromv format is supported only by Sony's Movie Shaker (included), Ulead's MediaStudio Pro 7, and Pinnacle's Studio Deluxe 8.1 . MovieShaker captures with the best quality, but it produces pixellated moving images and stores the files as .mmv. After capturing, the file must be exported to mpeg/avi/etc format. To render 1min 46secs of mmv footage, it took me about 30 mins for mpeg 2 and 8 mins for mpeg 1. MediaStudio 7 captures micromv footage very easily (after downloading the patch) and offers the quickest, most compatable options (direct output to avi/mpeg). Capture is instantaneous (as is cpaturing from most DV camcorders). However, the quality is also somewhat pixellated and the playback is jerky in moving areas. I have not tried Pinnacle.
2. No microphone input jack! It is hard to record a speaker's message if you are in crowds of people. If you have large hands, you may end up covering the bulit in mic and receive no sound at all.
3. Tiny Buttons! It is very difficult to zoom using the very tiny zoom button. Also, the record button is sticking out and you can accidently knock it.
4. Touch screen menu. If for any reason the touch screen is damaged, then it is dificult to command function of the camcorder.

If you are not into Computer editing or emailing video, then this camera deserves a "5 Star Rating". However, considering that I bought the camera with the intentions of editing, I have to say that I am a little upset with the finished quality.

4 out of 5 stars DCR-IP220 - Good ergonomics, but unproven tape format.......2003-04-14

Pros: Small size. Good ergonomics. Screen on back. Still photos. Compact tapes & batteries.

Cons: Expensive. MicroMV format may or may not equal MiniDV. Lens could be more wide-angle.

I found the camera easy to carry, though I kind of wish it had a neck strap. I think the size is about right - not too small to handle, but still very easy to carry. One complaint/frustration was that its lense doesn't seem to be as wide-angle as I'm used to - trying to tape inside buildings, etc. I found myself constantly backing into corners and still cutting people off at the waist, etc. - I may have to look into getting a wide-angle lense for this. Of course, I was trying to tape inside 150 year old houses with small rooms, so that didn't help. As for video and still quality, all I can say is that they look fine to me - I watched for pixelization or other artifacts reported as being problems with MicroMV, but haven't noticed any even in dark areas. I will say that experimenting with the night shot and super night shot, I don't see much use for them - I could hardly distinguish what I recorded in these modes. I was impressed by the ability of the still camera and flash to take decent photos of buildings from around 50 feet away in near total darkness. I didn't expect the flash to work at such a distance, but the photos came out quite well. One reason I selected this camera was that I thought it was better designend for use in underwater housings than the PC120BT I was also considering - primarily because the screen is on the back rather than flipping out to the side (which requires a much larger housing, or not using the screen). I didn't get a chance to try the camera in an underwater housing on this trip, but I still think the design will lend itself to this application. Ergonomically I prefer the IP220, but I have lingering questions about whether I sacrificed video quality by going with this model. But that's based on others's comments on previous MicroMV camcorders - not on any problems I've seen with my own camera or video. I haven't yet loaded video or stills onto my PC for editing, so I can't comment on that.

4 out of 5 stars Very good camcorder except..........2002-11-08

I bought my IP220 two weeks ago. The unit is fairly compact and light which I carry to places with ease.

The pros:
1. Video quality is excellent, same for the recorded sound qulity which is crystal clear
2. Swivel LCD panel is very easy to use and innovative
3. Touch screen feature works well and is pretty user-friendly
4. The set sits perfectly in the palm and the finger position also fits very nicely with the zoom lever, photo button and record button

The cons:
1. Even with 2.1 Mega pixels CCD, IP220 does not provide the kind of picture quality as other Sony digital cameras (like DSC-70), especially at 1600x1200 resolution
2. The MicroMV to MPEG2 conversion through movie shaker 3.1 (MPEG2-TS)is incompatible with the regular DVD standard (MPEG2-PS), therefore, it is impossible to burn DVD for regular DVD player use without converting it through a third-party software (e.g. pinnacle studio 8)

I would recomment this unit to those who care more about the video quality than photo quality.

5 out of 5 stars More than sufficient for 4 and 5 mega pixel cameras........2005-09-28

Good write speed with this new card. I've found it holds ~ 200 pictures with a 5 mega pixel camera, so more than enough for a long weekend of shooting.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect fit - super fast!.......2005-02-24

I bought this SanDisk 256 MB card for my new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ3 camera. Using this 3 MP camera at highest resolution, I get approx 155 pictures on the card. Even though I take pictures in bunches, I was able to get all my shots from a recent long weekend in the mountains on one card. So for me, the card is plenty big enouggh for day-to-day use. If I go on an extended vacation, I'll need to by additional cards, or a bigger one. But if I have access to my computer to off-load the images every few days, this works just fine.

One great feature of my new camera is the ability to take rapid-fire pictures in "burst" mode. When shooting the kids playing sports, or sledding down a mountain, the camera can shoot as fast as four frames per second. Even at highest resolution, I have had no problems shooting in bursts using this card - there is just no noticeable delay in writing the multiple images to this card.

I am surprised by some of the negative reviews on this card. All I can say is that for me (so far), it has been the perfect blend of performance and price.

5 out of 5 stars How many pictures will it store?.......2004-11-06

How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about. Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The SanDisk SDSDH-256-901 Secure Ultra 256MB, like most 256MB cards, will store on average 284 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 213 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 128 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 102 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 80 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Bad Experience to lose valuable pictures on this SD card.......2004-07-28

I bought one of this card from this page. My consideration is the speed. SanDisk SD Ultra II 256MB is up to 10MB/s as advertised. My minolta xg camera can use this speed to take continuous movie. I took some pictures when I got the card. It seemed OK. At the end of my 3-week vacation, the card was dead at 194th picture. I tried several ways to recover the pictures. Although I could see the file list, I can only copy 5 pictures. If I try to access others, the reader will look up. SanDisk should stop sell such trash. I will learn from others to get refound from SanDisk.

1 out of 5 stars Corrupted before I even got the rebate.......2004-04-08

There have been many stories on the Internet about avoiding Sandisk Secure Digital cards because after using them for a short period of time, they became corrupted causing people to loose their pictures. I have a two month old 256MB Ultra II SD card that just bit the dust as well as causing me to loose everything on the card. I tried everything I could think of to revive the card, but it's stone cold dead. I've been shooting digital for nine years now and have several cameras, so I'm not a newbie. To Sandisk's credit, they are providing a prepaid FedEx label (though I still have to drive to the FedEx station), but I was told it would take 3-4 weeks before I received a new card. This is far too long to wait so I'll be looking at other brands before considering another Sandisk product.

Ignore the bashing of this camera for CCD problems (with a reference to CNET forums). This camera is NOT one of the models affected by CCD's manufactured between OCTOBER 2002 and MARCH 2004. There were MANY manufacturers affected by these faulty CCD's, NOT JUST SONY.
    * * * * * I M P O R T A N T * * * * *

Despite being a superseded model, my camera still takes nice video. The Digital8 format was great for me because I had a lot of 8mm tapes that would have been otherwise lost if I couldn't transfer them via firewire with this camera. I paid $1100 for this brand new a few years ago, but you can get budget models today that compare or outdo it for much less ($300).

The battery life is one of the big benefits (about 2 hours of shooting time), and with the NP-F550 battery I got over 3 hours of recording time easily.

    Pro's:
    1. Flexible Digital8 format allows digital recording on regular 8mm tapes
    2. Good video and 16-bit PCM audio
    3. 20X optical zoom
    4. Easy transfer of analog 8mm video to digital via firewire
    5. Excellent battery life

    Con's:
    1. A bit bulky (by today's standards)
    2. A/V inputs don't allow for direct pass-through to firewire (subsequent models allow this, but for the TRV103 you have to record input video/audio to tape then playback and capture over firewire).
    3. Low-light video is somewhat grainy (but average for the time period this model was produced).

1 out of 5 stars Another FORMER Sony customer...BLACK SCREEN of death.......2005-05-28

I bought Sony camcorder last year. It has stopped recording video. I can't see anything in the viewfinder or screen. Absolutely nothing.

On the flip side, it did work nicely for the year when it was working though.

Just in case, you think I am disgruntled, cynical and I am writing this out of spite, please follow this link. There are many like us.

    http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-7594-0.html?forumID=59&threadID=53316&messageID=635769

In fact, people there have filed a class action suit against Sony on this issue.

Overall, buy it if you want to. But see you on the forum above in 1 year.

    5 out of 5 stars 7 Good Years.......2005-05-11

I purchases the Sony DCR-TRV103 Handycam just after my first son was born, and just after my VHS camcorder died. I have used this camera extensively over the last 7 years, never have had a problem, until recently. I have filmed several hundred hours worth of videos with great results. Excellent pictures and quality sound. Recently I have been getting an error message, telling me to eject the tape. I am looking into to repair, but maybe after all this time it is ready to replace, but I would recommend a new one of these to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars Former Sony customer.......2002-03-20

My wife purchased a Sony camcorder model DCR-TRV-103 in the summer of 2000 and gave it to me as a gift for to take on our 25 day tour of Europe in September ,2000. After familiarizing myself it I never had a reason to use it until on our trip. About half way into the trip the unit failed in Rome , Italy with about two weeks left on our tour. After returning home I sent it to a Sony Service Center near St. Louis and received it back about a month later. I did not use it again until the following August for about 15 min. to record a Christening at our church and it Worked o.k. I didn't use it again until Christmas day to record our last holiday in our present home .All our family was present. After nearly an hour I checked to see if the cassette had finished and I was shocked to see it had failed with the same exact failure as the first .I believe it should have held up longer than two hours of recording time since the repair but not so. Now Sony refuses to make the repair good ...

5 out of 5 stars Hard to beat this one.......2000-07-20

I have had this camera for about 3 months, and I am very satisfied with the quality of the camera itself (not surprising from Sony), and the quality of the results. Considering the resolution (500 lines, compared to 240~260 for VHS & 400 for S-VHS, both of which are analog), I don't really see any great advantage to going with DV technology, except that a full digital camera is a bit lighter and the fact that you can record up to 2 hours on a DV tape, compared to 1 hour on either 8mm or Hi8 tape. I use both tapes, by the way, and there is no readily noticeable difference in quality. As far as the weight, since I do a lot of handheld recording, I find that I like this one better because a lighter camera is more difficult to keep steady. The recording sound quality is very good also, as well as being able to record in darkness! The ONLY, and I mean ONLY thing about this camera that bothers me is the fact that more of the on-camera controls are not duplicated on the remote control, such as fades, backlight, etc. I do a lot of active videography, and even though I have a very steady hand, it's very hard not to jiggle the camera when trying to turn on a fade or the backlight or one of the picture processing modes. Other than that, I would highly recommend this camera to anyone.

The Olympus P-RBW Replacement Ribbon for P-400 Series Phot Pinters, Gloss Finish, allows me to print pictures in 8 x 10 Glossy for framing. This is a digital printing item and the colors are very vivid and I get extremely clear, sharp photographs. I receive many compliments on photos printed with this ribbon.

5 out of 5 stars If you own the P400..........2005-07-25

...then you are sort of stuck with whatever ribbons fit into it. That said, Olympus offers ribbons with matte or glossy finish, so you do have some choice.

As a scrapbooker, I use the glossy ribbons because I think they create a better photographic image. I am not aware of whether dye-sub pigments are acid-free or archival quality, but the pictures from this ink on this printer with the high-end paper are considerably nicer than the ones I got from the local photo shop printing out digital images on whatever printer they use. I have accidentally left these photos out on a table in the direct Arizona sunshine for weeks at a time, and I have not seen any fading (just dust!)

I haven't priced out the cost of printing photos with this thing, but if you buy A4 paper in 100-page lots and save up your images so you can print full sheets of pictures, you maximize your economy. I do get 50 pages of A4 prints from each ribbon, plus or minus 1-2 pages, max. I just save up pix & print in bulk, 2 5x7s, 2-3 4x6es, 4 3x5s or 9 wallets on a page.

I also use this ribbon for printing titles/journaling on occasion, but the one problem with this printer/ribbon is that you are stuck with using the special Olympus dye-sub paper or the ink doesn't work, either absorbing down into the paper so it looks washed out, or staying on top of the paper and smearing off. This means the ink will NOT work on vellum or other "interesting" scrapbooking papers.

Well, you can't blame the ink for not being an elephant. It does what it does. A cheap inkjet will do fine journal printing; save this ink for photos.
